DMC does have blocking but not in all of the games, DMC3 had royal guard and DMC4, when playing as Dante, you do have the option. It works optimally as a parrying system more than a block though, so it does add a lot more flavor to it.

DMC relies on you to use your reflexes more on dodging out of harm's way rather than blocking it.

Can't say I like that they have Skate (tony hawk), RockBand(guitar hero), Dead Space (RE4), Dante's Inferno (GoWar), and they're all rips of other games, but since all of these rips are actually better than the games that they rip, maybe I shouldn't complain. I'm currently enjoying Dead Space, which I ashamedly overlooked last year.

I think studying the Divine Comedy has made me very cynical towards any action game made in its image. Dante just walked around looking at the scenery; albeit stunning imagery and social critique, but wtf would possess a developer to say to him/herself "ok so we need action, lets pick one of the most prominent pieces of literature where the main character is ushered through hell, but instead of him being a pansy and accepting it, lets give the dude a big weapon and big muscles and have him kill everything"... makes my penis sad.

I have played God of War, I thoroughly enjoyed it.. well except that moment where I went to hell (da ja vu?) an had to climb out. That sucked ass.

Anyways, the hacking and slashing is the same as far as.. gameplay elements but it doesn't look as fun as it did in god of war.

The art direction looks gorgeous, but I fear that the game's graphics are not quite doing it justice. Still, it looks like a fun game, and the trailer music was outstanding.

@ithyphallus of his own will recommends Kotaco!...: I wouldnt really call the fights in GOW QTE. The finishers used QTEs, but overall you never had to use them ever unless you wanted a more cinematic way to finish an enemy. Except finishing off bosses that is.

@UsernameOfTheDead: GOW's market saturation is probably stale much like Halo, but the story is far from stale. Everyone who's played the first two are looking forward to the epic battle between the Gods and Titans.

Dante's Inferno may have the same gameplay mechanics and feel of God of War, but I think that's where the similarities end. Personally, I prefer games based Greek Mythology than ones based on medieval times set in Purgatory and Hell. But I'd still like to play Dante's Inferno. It kind of looks fun. It's like a cross between GOW, Devil May Cry, and Diablo.

On a side note, the scythe makes it feel more like Devil May Cry meets Ninja Gaiden.

Man i loved Dead Space, and now this. Wow, has EA turned over a new leaf?! I used to love EA back in the day when they first came out, then when they murdered the GoldenEye name i lost all hope. This is what we call a come back. Good work EA.

@Hey_Blinkon: Even though I played through GoW and GoW2 long ago, I hate when people post spoilers. It's just a plain dick move and it's not funny. There's still tons of people who haven't played them and you pretty much ruined the best twist in the story for GoW. Good job asshole.

@yargh: As yargh implied above, turning Dante's Inferno into an action game is dismissive of the source material's plot and tone. Dante isn't Kratos; he's a poet, not a warrior. Having him run around hell slaughtering demons left and right not only isn't true to the source material, it's disconcerting.

Imagine taking The Tale of Genji, a romance originally written by a lady of the court in Heian era Japan, and turning it into a pornographic dating sim where Genji wanders around Kyoto, summoning ghosts and tentacle beasts to rape the female figures of the story. Such a game would bear absolutely no resemblance to the original work and would be more than a little insulting to a variety of people for a variety of reasons.

i hate to sound like an ass, but i hate EA, all they do is release sports games, and games based off movies, which are always rushed, and always money-spinners for 5 year old kids to drag their parents into wasting money on. i like the sims, but usually they just ripoff other ppls games, that lord of the rings rpg they made that had final fantasy X's battle system, right down to the turn based little scroller thing on the side, even the attacks were the same, where in the help bar they replaced the original final fantasy monsters name with "orc" - seeing this preview, it looks ok, but im BETTING - gameplaywise - it was ripped off some other game... and at the moment... they seem to be ripping off god of war, and i saw a few flat surfaces in there that were like OMG early ps2 game stuff! forgive my totally biassed hatred towards EA but it's not without reason i assure...

I doubt there's any reference to the book in this game besides cashing off the name. Because Dante's Inferno is not a book that'd make a very good game, unless you do what it seems they did, and just ignore everything about it except vague descriptions of hell to use on level designs.

They could have used any generic person and title and it'd have been hurt no less for it. I think they must want the controversy, judging by how they protested their own game.

Pretty lame... This is gonna be a pretty shallow take on Hell, and a bastardsization of the novel. I mean, let's pretend it's not even based on anything, and it still won't be a great game.

All their demons were unoriginal, and it looks generic as hell. Plus that dialogue was crap. The voice actor put a lot into it, but I mean come on? Metal burning hotter than neccessary for any craft? Seriously?

I don't think Satan fell from heaven just so he could climb back up again in a childish bid for land and the detruction of all things good. The possiblities are ifnintely deeper than what was presented here.

And GoW's story was crap. If you put Kratos next to Leonidas, there's absolutely no comparison to be made. You didn't see a single Spartan in 300 praying like a whimp for victory, they met their deaths like warriors.

Anyone know if the Divine Comedy is available in modern English/Swedish? I couldn't get past the first 5 pages of Homer's Illiad/Odyssey because of the old language & poem like structure...

@yargh: That's my point. This could be a fine game on it's own. It doesn't need to be Dante's Inferno, and the fact that it is cheapens the IP (I feel weird even calling it an IP).

In the actual story, Dante doesn't fight anybody. He doesn't even have a weapon. He's pretty much being taken on a guided tour of Hell, writing about what he sees.

Again, I'm not saying this will be a bad game, nor am I mortally offended by it. It just seems unnecessary and a little disrespectful to what many consider one of the finest literary works in history. I have no doubt that the right dev team could make a very, very good Dante's Inferno game. I also have no doubt that that game would be nothing like God of War.

I loved Dead Space when it came out, and honestly at first I thought the notion of a game based on The Divine Comedy seemed a bit ridiculous, but yeah, if they can so skillfully emulate Resident Evil, then I'm pretty sure they can do God of War as well.

Also that gameplay video was kind of sweet.
This is officially on my radar.

I can't get over how ridiculous that huge scythe is. It's well, comical. I really wish they had gone with a different weapon, or made it smaller cause seriously, it's ridiculous, and not in a good way. Other than the main character, though, the art direction looks pretty interesting.

It's not actually made by the same team as Dead Space, It's made by a different team within the group of developers that used to be called EA Redwood Shores, but is now called Visceral Games. There might be some overlap between the teams, but don't expect the same level of quality as Dead Space.

@prototype beta: Doubt it. I don't remember that little evil speech at the end. It wasn't about an epic quest to stop the evil, it was just a man journeying about trying to find his life again (or something it's been a while).

Still not buying. It's enough that EA has the audacity to make a hack-n-slash out of one of the greatest epics of all time. To add insult to injury, EA is simply copying other devs. Dead Space was Resident Evil in space, and nowhere near as good as Resident Evil. This is God of War in Hell, and it will likely be nowhere near as good as God of War. I can't wait to see EA's versions of Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy.

Have EA been making better games as of late? Why yes, they have. It's no coincidence that they're other people's games.

This looks better than it has any right to be, but...is it just me, or do the enemies just not look like they're from hell enough? I feel like most of those could be creatures from God of War or Devil May Cry and they wouldn't feel out of place. I want things that look like bonafied demons and lost souls, trapped in Satan's domain.

It looks decent, but I'm still not a fan of the premise.

I just don't think that an action hack-n-slash version of a literary classic (Complete with cheesy "Go to Hell" tagline) is the best idea if we want people to see gaming as anything more than a juvenile, mindless diversion, incapable of any depth or real storytelling.

I'm not saying every game should be Braid, I love me a good action game. This game looks great, I'm sure I'll play and enjoy it. It's just that the games-as-art douchebag in the back of my mind can't help feeling a little worried that maybe it's too early for gaming to be tackling something as influential as Dante's Inferno.

Sorry, but I'm not impressed. If they're going to copy GoW so closely they'll have to be able to one up it for me to be able to care. It's either that or change it enough that it doesn't make me wish I was playing GoW while playing it.

@lihimsidhe: I would've loved the logo a lot more without the redundant skull. For a developer, your logo is something people should remember, and a skull in a game like this is not something you'd even note.

I will try not to judge this book by its cover, which is a xerox of another book's cover that was written in the 14th century. Good think I'll have Walden Pond to lower my pulse after this one. Better yet, someone will have adapted Kafka and Joyce into shooters and MMOs, respectively. Can't wait to smash imperialism in Conrad's Heart of Darkness later this year. Really, it's bad enough when movies exploit the classics.

GoW clone or not, the game looks decent and the soundtrack also pretty cool.

However, Visceral Studios? One of the most generic studio names I can think of AND the lamest logo I've ever seen.

The locales are wonderful, and the enemies look thrilling, but I'd rather run there with DMC Dante than the abomination you play with in this game.

I dunno about anyone else but i think it looks and sounds great.
I know EA used to be the target for a bunch of hate which i never really got cuz i don`t give two shits about "gaming politics" but i can safely say i like EA at this point.
They can count on me grabbing the PS3 and PSP versions of this game.

Im glad this turned out looking as good as it does. Ive read the divine comedy (look EA, easy excuse for a trilogy) and i was so excited what i heard this was being made. i really hope this is all footage of one of the rings of hell, and that each ring looks and plays a little differently.

i have always been a fan of dante's inferno, i think its a really visual story, but this just reminds me of god of war, not the content, but the gameplay. Dont get me wrong, ill probably still be playing it :D

I loved Dead Space primarily because I'm one of those stubborn crusty old RE fans who loves the classic RE style and thought that Dead Space was arguably much closer to the original RE games than RE4 or RE5 were. I thought it was the best game of 2008. But I can't really get excited about "Dead Space team makes GoW rip off" because I was never much of a GoW fan. I played them and they were fun, but to in my eyes they were a rip off of Devil May Cry + Soul Reaver, both of which I love. Regardless, I'll play Dante's Inferno, and maybe it will surprise me.
