First Look At Dragon Quest IX’s Co-Op Game Play
We’ve heard about Dragon Quest IX’s local only co-op play. Now, let’s finally watch famous Japanese celebrities play it.
For those who want to get right to the action, gameplay starts at about 3 minutes in.
According to this episode of Tsuruno Takeshi’s new show Joudeki!! Geinoujin Kodawari Ou Kouza Iketaku, this is also the first time actual game play has been shown on television.
At the end of the program, DQ creator Yuji Horii comes out and talks about the pressure of making Dragon Quest games. Even though the credits are rolling why he’s talking, still neat to see Horii on Japanese network television.

The thing I would not like about Dragon Quest IX's co-op mode online would be that people could (and would) tend to be more of an ass to you than if you were face to face or in the same room. But at the same time, I really don't know any friends that are RPG freaks like me other than in Pokémon. >_> So Wi-Fi could be useful in that sense.
And speaking about SMAP, Nintendo actually hired them for promoting MOTHER 2 in Japan, as I recall.
But really, as a 20 year old band, are they really STILL that popular!? They must be like Japan's Beatles or something like that.

On DQIX, I seem to find myself more and more unhappy as of late with their decision on making it co-op. It sounds like fun, and I'm sure it is, but I can't actually think of 3 IRL friends who are big enough RPG nerds and patient enough to sit and play this game with me in extended sessions until we beat the game.
What are your alternatives to co-op? Playing through the entire game alone, with just yourself? Sounds like a pretty lonely RPG without a party (especially since your characters are all custom, and therefore probably have no deep story or character interaction involved with them). No doubt more difficult as well (although I seem to recall there being difficulty scaling depending on amount of characters).
If they had decided to include online (even FC only) I'd be okay, because there are plenty of places to go on the internet to find people just as interested as I am and devoted to the game to play it with. They haven't, however (thanks Japan), and I'm going to be stuck with another game that I'm not going to get to experience to its fullest due to not having three friends who buy all the same games as me and are willing to spend the time playing them co-op.
