First ModNation Racers Trailer Played, Created, And Shared

Here’s the first official trailer for ModNation Racers, United Front Games’ urban vinyl meets kart racing take on Sony’s Play – Create – Share concept.

As I mentioned in my E3 impressions of ModNation Racers, you can see the game certainly doesn’t skimp on charm, and the amount of options for customising your racer, kart, and track is almost overwhelming. The frenetic action shown in the trailer does nothing, however, to assuage my fears that meat of the title will lie in the creation tools and the actual racing will fall flat. Of course, I say that with every intention of buying the game when it comes out just to spend countless hours making little tiny racing peoples.

Are they trying to convert the name PlayStation 3 to PS3 or something? I've been seeing that quite a bit in newer trailers. Plus the little PlayStation voice effect thing is back! I love that! :D

Really excited. I've never felt the need to buy a kart racer apart from Mario Kart, but this just may do it. However, I hope they aren't leaning too hard on the Play, Create, Share aspect. If (at its core) it's just another kart racer with bombs and speed boosts and rural scenery, then it'd probably get old fast. What made LittleBigPlanet stand out from its underlying philosophy was its incredible level design.

It looks a lot more Gripshift than LBP, but as I love both propeties, that's all to the good. I'm a sucker for a track editor too, especially one as slick as this.
  • BunnyForce
It looks great and I would go get it but, to me, it will be another game I will play for a month and then put it down. That's what happened to my LBP but since my summer vacation kinda sucks so I'm gonna be getting back to LBP. :)
  • bangbangblah
@Edairu wants a Phantom Dust 2!: Yeah, I really think this will be a great game.

@deanbmmv: Agreed. Both Buzz and Scene It for XBox are awesome with a lot of people. The DVD version just doesn't compare to having buzzers in your hand.

Only time will tell if this gets popular or not. I think it has potential. If the tracks are really as customizable as they seem, maybe... It's like LittleBigPlanet without the insane learning curve. I dropped that game because I was too dumb to learn it.
  • mangs
@shouryuuken: agreed. this is perfect for cross-promotion. How about being able to import LBP levels and race in them? That would be awesome!

@Dangeresque the Observer: I seem to recall Toad yelling "OOOWWWOOWWOWOWOWOW" whenever hitting him with something. I loved that noise :P

Except for when I was playing as Toad. Which was almost all the time. I love me some Toad in Mario kart 64 :)
  • Mit
I really hope this game includes a mode that allows you to continually play custom tracks from the internet without pausing. That mode is the reason why Trackmania is one of my favorite online games to kill time with on my laptop. While it's server-based in Trackmania, servers have so many tracks on them that I never see the same track twice, and it's great.

If LittleBigPlanet had a mode where I could just blindly play through random custom levels with friends or a group of random people, I'd play it a lot more. It really slows things down when you sit there and pick through levels based on ratings or their names, and a lot of potentially great levels probably never even get played because of those two things. I think a mode like that would work even better for ModNation Racers, and would add a lot of incentive for me to pick it up (even though I'll probably be picking this one up anyways).
  • ShadowOdin isn't american
I like it, and how it is basically an evolution of Little Big Planet. It's a good concept, which I am glad to see Sony embracing it (makes you think what genre they'll do next *crosses fingers for zelda-esque action adventure*)

So I'll definitely give this a try, in hopes that it is even half of what it aim to be (LBP lacked in some areas, but was still a very good game) and if it's even as remotely fun as to what Mario Kart 64 was back in the day, I'll be all over it.

Only thing that really disappoint me is the direction of weapons. Missiles, really? Because don't all racers with weapons have missiles? More cartoony weapons would be more enjoyable. I know I enjoy throwing a red shell alot more than I would enjoy firing a missile.
  • The Red Comet
@NexusSIX: Eats Gods for breakfast: You know what would be great? If they had sackboys, and supported your LBP DLC, so you could use the costumes in all the Play, Create, Share games. More money value in the DLC that way.
  • -MasterDex-
@Stoeck: The game is a 2D scrolling platformer with level-designing incorporated into it which is pretty niche these days, not to mention that the game was made by a small unknown studio. I'd say it did pretty well considering. @Edairu wants a Phantom Dust 2!: You have a point, if the core gameplay isn't good then the game isn't going to live for very long. Personally, I thought the gameplay in LBP was fine, granted there was a few annoyances bt none more so than other games. I'll hold my judgement on this till it comes out. It looks like it could be a great game if they treat it right.

I can't wait until someone recreates Wario's Stadium here.

Perhaps a day one purchase? My PS3 needed a silly racer and I've loved making extreme stages since V-rally 2 (PSX) fell into my lap.

I sure hope it's four players per console, that was a big plus for LBP.

modnation ladies sing this song. doo dah. doo dah. modnation racetrack five miles long. oh doo dah day.
  • shouryuuken
yeah, they should have called it "sack boy racers" and used sack boys.. i think sony should have whored those things to help their brand.. theyre adorable and cool at the same time.
  • MugenXS
lol cute... like Mario Kart on drugs... can't wait!
  • talks2wall
The editor looks pretty cool and fairly easy to use, but otherwise nothing really grabs be about this game. Looks nice and all, but seems to be a pretty standard kart racer. It could be some great fun, but that'll depend on the balance. The bad balance is what made me stop playing Wii Mario Kart.
  • Wolfers
@Kobun: I don't think you could make an enjoyable kart racer with Kodu.

    Wolfers

  • Wolfers
This has the potential to be incredible, just make sure the kart racing is sound, pretty please?

  • deanbmmv
@Windburn: Motorstorm:Pr has become one of our top Split Screen games. Up there with Halo 3. Though party game wise you can't beat Buzz. (or when I'm at home, n drunk a bit, Singstar)
  • shouryuuken
@Dangeresque the Observer: thats what i miss about sega. i think the dreamcast was the best console for this... so many of my memories with that thing include my friends. it also helped that it came out when i was 16.. so sitting around with my friends playing video games for hours and hours was perfect.
  • nightwheel
It's the and improved Mario Kart Wii!!

  • Skyline7284
Reminds me of how much i love Trackmania. Trackmania needs an option to tweak narrowness, and such though.
  • Edairu wants a Phantom Dust 2!
    @bangbangblah: For the record:

Yes, you can change the sun angle and height. Yes, you can change the water level, essentially drowning the course out if you like XD. The track texture, height, angle and all that good stuff is fully customizable.

They showed off a lot of the cool features in the Sony E3 Demo, I'm sure you can find it on Youtube if you're interested.

    Here you go

  • That mop mutant from NES.
This is Kart Rider with customizable maps. I am going to assume it will have DLC just like KR?, since that game only made $300 million dollars just on micro transactions.
  • Dangeresque the Observer
@darkos87: You need to play some more Mario Kart 64. Toad is no less annoying there- he's still a real prick. But you know what? Every time you hit him with an item, he goes flying and bouncing as you zoom past, and you hear him scream "NOOOOOOOOOO!" with full Doppler effect glory. It is extremely therapeutic.
  • Dangeresque the Observer
@Windburn: It's a niche that Nintendo has long dominating, you're right. Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Mario Party, and all the Mario Sports series, and plenty others- Nintendo does couch multiplayer right. Sony and Microsoft screwed this one up for a long time, and if you ask me, Microsoft still is.

Same-console isn't a priority to them anymore. Sure, most games still have it, but it's gimped. Call of Duty's split screen, you can't customize your classes, you have to go with the default list. Lame! Online is their focus now... and that's fine, but ignoring same-console to do that will kick them in the pants.

Sony, however, is starting to understand that. Starting to realize that people do enjoy hanging out and playing together... ESPECIALLY the casuals crowd they are neglecting. So out comes LBP, which is awesome same-console fun, and now this. And to be fair, Microsoft is moving in this direction too, but it seems to me that Sony has a head start.
  • darkos87
It looks just like Mario Kart... but with better graphics, and without Toad. Oh Toad... how I hate you.
  • SuperTongue
Loved this game since I saw it at the Sony press conference. Looks like it's Sony's answer to Mario Kart, and it looks to be a damn good one at that.

  • patapon
@liquid_kore: Didn't you know that *style* is a creation option? I think your covered.
  • Aekero
While the artwork is a little strange on the actual characters, this definitely has potential. I've been wanting a "fun" racer (versus ultra realistic or destruction derbyish) and I don't have a Wii, so no Mario Kart. I'll be keeping an eye out for this one.

    Aekero

  • deanbmmv
This game is looking pretty good. Always liked the arcade type racers (otherwise Crash CTR wouldn't of been my first PSN game) And the editor on this from E3 impressions seems much easier than LBP's, which is good, n powerful, but a tad too complex for console use. I look forward to hearing more on this game
  • NexusSIX: Eats Gods for breakfas
@liquid_kore: they may have Sackboys as a DLC later on. Don't count it out just yet. Hell, LBP has MGS, Streetfighters, Ghostbusters, God of War, Heavenly Sword, etc. etc. as DLC.
  • Dangeresque the Observer
@liquid_kore: Yeah, I third this sentiment. It seems like generic mini anime style, and it does not mesh well with either the style of the rest of the game or my soul. Sackboys would have been incredibly welcome, or just something that I was not loathe to gaze upon.

This comes from an otaku, as well, mind you. Definitely needs moar Sackboy, and failing that, perhaps just a change to something new altogether. Obviously, in a racing game, the drivers are not the most crucial and difficult part, so it shouldn't be too hard to change them.
  • Kobun
@Lee: It will be if you're willing to pay for it. Remember that Joy Ride is going to be a DLC machine, so any expansions and changes will be the result of what you spend on it as opposed to user creation.

Kodu is actually a more fitting comparison, even though it's a game creation tool. You can create race courses and set win conditions to varying degrees in it.
  • deanbmmv
@liquid_kore: It would obviosly be really rude(being as this isn't Mm) but I tink this game would do mcuh better if Sony had jumped in n told em to use sackboys or what not. They did want Sackboys as a mascot, and this game clearly fits in the Play.Create.Share brand.
  • Malfunktion v2
This game looks fantastic. LPB creation was quite daunting(for me), requiring several hours to create something that just worked, let alone was fun to play. I was really impressed watching the Sony PC and seeing an entire level made in minutes. Now I know the game isn't due out for some time but I hope the devs are investing in many different environments to create, not just racers and their cars.
  • bangbangblah
@luxfluxio:How do you know this already? Are you making that judgement purely on this trailer?

The game looks a lot like LBP . . . on wheels! If you can actually customize the sun position and details like that, it's level editor is going to be very on par with LBP.

As a person who's always been a fan of Mario Kart, I'm really excited to see this game happen. It's nice to see some other consoles take a shot at the "kart" genre and (hopefully) get it right. The last decent kart game I remember was the original Crash Team Racing for PS1, but even that wasn't that good mainly due to the fact that I couldn't care less about any of the characters.

The concept of creating all your own players and racing against your friends creations -- I see that having a really, really fun future.

(didn't realize the new kotaku commenting makes you use html for skipping lines)

  • Save me
Im thinking of the possibilities. If LBP had a MGS level pack, this game could get a taste of the license as well.

Hopefully we can get a stage resembling the Shagohod chase (complete with logs) or the getaway with Big mama.

Excuse me, I wet my pants.
  • Go Team Venture
Little Big Planet meets Mario Kart. How can anyone go Wrong?
  • SanctusFides
@Đipic: I think it may be smart not to use sackboys. With sackboys, there comes a certain art style to maintain. I like how they keep sackboys in their littlebig world. Dont want them over used either

    SanctusFides

  • Edairu wants a Phantom Dust 2!
@Stoeck: As Fahey said, I think racing mechanic itself could be the downfall of the whole title. That's mostly why I stopped playing LBP day in and day out. Creativity is always a good thing, but when the core gameplay is lacking there really isn't much point in making those super fantastic race tracks.
  • TheAngryHeretic
What I see in that clip...I like. I like it a lot. I'll be picking this one up when it comes out.

    TheAngryHeretic

  • Đipic
@liquid_kore: Can't say I care for it all that much either to be honest and I really think they dropped the ball by not somehow working it out so they could use Sackboy instead.
  • Demonbird
@luxfluxio: I thought this looked amazing. I was impressed with how fluid their editor worked, and how quickly they can create a nice product with it. I am looking forward to seeing what you can do by investing time into it.
  • Save me
@sereal: I think you mean Crash team racing, good sir.
  • Stoeck
I have my concerns about how well this game will do (mostly due to the lower than expected LBP sales and sales in general on the PS3 platform), but I am pumped for this game. The limiting factors I predict will be the number of available weapons and the originality of the people creating maps. Will we see heavy moderation against tracks that resemble Mario Kart tracks? These factors could be important in determining the game's success.

    Stoeck

  • FloodZone
@liquid_kore: Seriously, they have the perfect mascot with sackboy and then don't use him. It look like a good game, but the mass appeal would be far larger if it had been LBP kart racing.

    FloodZone

  • Gambit09
    Cheese kart!
  • Karuto
This is a pretty amazing concept. I like how Sony is trying to expand on this. Maybe we'll see more when it comes to other genres, such as RPGs, Fighters, and Shooters.
  • Đipic
@luxfluxio: "they kind of didn't do so well as compared to LBP."

In what respects? Care to elaborate?
  • Blore07
@luxfluxio: Because a lot of people found MK:Wii to be a little shalow, I hated the fact no matter how good I preformed i'd be bombarded with 100000 blue shells and lose first place. Also, I love me a bit of customisation.

    Blore07

  • King of Fun UK
I think we all know which game series is going to be re-created very, very quickly by the people who buy this game. ... and promptly removed.
  • Blore07
@direxnipe: I demand that theres 4 player split screen! I'll buy it either way but it wont get half the playtime it could if it doesnt have it.

    Blore07

  • Windburn
If you think about it though, the PS3 doesn't really have anything that's easy to pick up and play when mates are over like Mario Kart. It may well be that there's a niche there for ModNations as an arcade racing-shooting game with a wider appeal than normal racing fans, as well as being an awesome creative outlet too.

I mean, the only comparison I can think to make (gameplay wise) is Wipeout, and whilst it was great, for some reason it never got much air time as a party game, it was too frantic and the levels were all same-ish. So long as the powerups are interesting (and many!) in ModNations, and the attributes of the racers customizable too, this should produce its own fun in spades.
  • Monsignor
@luxfluxio: Do as well? It's not even out and you've already decided their fate? Classy.

If it's anything like jakx combat racing i'm sold.

I cannot wait for this game! I picked up LBP but wasnt too impressed with it, but I love kart type games and mario kart wii didnt really satisfy me, lets hope this can deliver!

Not saying the game is bad but they kind of didn't do so well as compared to LBP.What's the point of a moding version of MK?
  • direxnipe
looks fantastic. i see a lot of fun parties ahead. i hope there is 4 player split-screen
  • liquid_kore
I'm not digging the style. Kinda wish they had Sackboys instead.

That looks awesome. Hope the Xbox's answer to it is as customizable..

My guess is that this title will fade into obscurity if only because it doesn't have the MarioKart label.
