God Eaters Reminds Us Of Monster Hunter
In Capcom’s Monster Hunter franchise, you hunt monsters. In the newly announced God Eaters from Namco Bandai, you hunt monsters.
Out this spring in Japan, God Eaters also offers goodies like character creation and the ability to customise and make weapons (sound familiar?), and like MH, this PSP titles has four player co-op. Just be glad they didn’t call it God Eater Hunters.
Or maybe, shame they didn’t!

@TheLAG: I'm so damn tired of my fucking cat bombing the shit outta me when the Wyvern is down and I'm trying to get my free hits in. GAWDDAMMIT!!
@Geist002: I too agree.
I'm a HR 1, fresh off a transfer from MHF2 to Unite. Been stuck on the level 3 urgent Quest (1st run in with Khezu) for AGES. Been doing quest, buffing my armor, etc., and no dice.
I had been using either the Long Sword or Great Sword. I finally attempted Khezu training and tried the short sword (which I had never tried yet). WOW. The stick and move tactics were night and day. So I checked out the base model fire sword (Red Steel or something?).
Luckily, the cat in the boat that I send out religiously after every quest had cobbled together (over time) the 4 Wyvern Firefliud I needed, and the lady at the gathering hall entrance was selling Wyvern fangs, which I hadn't even seen yet. So I got my sword, stocked up on Mega potions, Hot meat and whatnots, and finally GOT THAT BASTARD!
He KO'd me twice, but when that "Quest complete" came on the screen as he fell, there was no feeling like it. Bad part was I did this at WORK....fist pumping and all. I SO wanted to yell out my guttural victory call, but I did manage to restrain myself.
This is probably the 1st portable game I've played that truly feels like a console game. Incredible game.
@FarmboyinJapan: Metal Gear?!
But really, how the hell would Metal Gear Monster Hunter work? What would you hunt?
@ST19AG_WGreymon: So do I.
amarney
It looks like... MH x Phantasy Star Portable, with the whole modern deal...
@Striderhayasa - Can we get some damn m/kb support?!: No shit eh?
Goddamned kids these days expecting shit to be holding their hands the whole way. And if it doesnt then it suddenly sucks and is the games fault.
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: I gotta agree with Bubble on this one. The controls, the limitations and the timing have all been put there for good reason.
For instance, maybe you shouldn't be trying to spam pots like it was some sore of Korean MMO in the middle of a fight. Maybe you need to learn the time of a creatures attacks to get the opportune moment to sheath your weapon and move to a more advantageous position. And maybe you should stop blaming your short-comings as a player on a game that hundreds of thousands of people play religiously without having the same problems you do. But these are all just maybes so, who know what the problem could actually be?
ChrowX
@Knoxximus ver. 5.66: lol I suppose so. I'd probably do it too if I didn't only have the series 2000 psp..
And thanks for the info on ad-hoc party >:) dling now!
Superlocke
@Geist002: exactly, agreed 100percent...Monster hunter is all about skill and as it seems from these comments there's not too much of that going around.
@Marduk: agreed, the camera is not the problem. example, if fighting multiple monsters, say, two Khezus, you can attack one with a combo (think long sword) scroll through items AND rotate the camera so you can see behind you to watch the second khezu.
the camera isn't the problem. If anything MH does have a steep learning curve but lack of skill or understanding is usually the reason for MH hate.
@Can I Really Be the Hero?: shitty controls or gamers with no skills? you decide...
I laugh at those people too...
Because hunting monsters is such a fresh and original concept.
Rozzlit
@clumsypanda: Monster Hunter is about skill of the Player, not of the character. PSP is just a leveling and stat grindfest. You can get passed anything in PSP with enough EXP grinding. In monster hunter, you either have to adapt to new strategies and techniques, or quite and call the game shit.
Monster Hunter is on of my favorite games, period. The people who don't like it or dismiss it are the people who find it too hard to not have a lock on, too hard to not have levels to grind to beat something, too hard to micromanage different elements of your characters while in battle with a wyvern.
How many people beat Belmont-Style Castlevania games? How many people beat Metroid-Style Castlevania games? Metroidvania games have been beaten by just about anyone because if you have trouble with an area, you just backtrack and grind. Severe drop in actual player skill.
I hope I'm not the only one who thinks this way.
Geist002
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: All I want are more reasonable hit boxes.
I hate being whipped by a centimeter of tail and flying 10 feet forward.
Everything else I can deal with.
@hanulbada: Same here. I forget not everyone types in actual complete words.
@AngerII: Monster Hunter seems more along the lines of 17th century or so. Advanced Technology seems to show up from time to time.
@boogiewithmoose: I think all the people who want the game to control like Devil May Cry and hate the long animations when you use items are just missing the point.
Being able to cancel out of any combo would make the game too easy and too safe. Being able to put your weapon back quickly mid-fight and having potions work instantly would erase all consequences of making a mistake. As much as those things "suck", they're there for a reason.
@Michael Sanchez: I would say more appalling myself. I prefer Monster Hunter to whatever that is up there.
@zach a mac rack alack:
I lol'd.
@haruna:
you have never played MH on PS2.
@Superlocke: Yeah, it's not pretty, but in this instance I prefer the function over fashion. After awhile you don't even notice it anymore...tis the power of Monster Hunter. ^_^
@Skyman747: Group J, Room 50 are usually where the english speakers are. ^_^
@AngerII: Prehistoric fantasy, medieval fantasy whatever. I can only take so much thatched cottages and swords.
On the other hand, I adore "modern day gone wrong" fantasy.
@Superlocke: Nope, NA doesn't have Ad-Hoc party. Although finding a Match in the Japanese shouldn't be too hard, since you just look for "2G". You just have no idea wtf everyone is telling you to do.
Skyman747
@Superlocke: If you have the JP version of Ad Hoc Party, it'll work with the US version of Unite.
@Geist002: I'd take PSP over MH anyday.
@Knoxximus ver. 5.66: Hmmm... doesn't Unite have the Ad-Hoc party app here in canada/NA yet?
Just bought it, havent really had a chance to play it... and wouldn't the resolution from blowing up your PSP to your TV's size be terrible? lol
Superlocke
@tehdorkz: You need to play more games.
Superlocke
@MellowJade:
Racist Hunter!
eh, couldn't resist.
Meeeh
@reality.exe -console: Monster hunter doesn't use typical medieval fantasy, it's more like prehistoric fantasy.
Honestly I would much prefer medieval fantasy over "modern japanese" fantasy. High school kinds running around with giant swords never did it for me.
@Archaotic: I never really liked the ranged weapons very much either, not really my style.
I think a lot of people who play Monster Hunter fist approach the game in an aggressive manor. I know it took me some time to learn all of the different weaknesses each monster has.
Can I Really Be the Hero?
@Michael Sanchez: I don't see felyne comrades... WHERE ARE MY CUTE, FUZZY, MOSTLY USELESS COMPANIONS?!?
@Curse_Lily: I plays it on mah TV...and my TV is 65", so I get what looks like about 40" veiwable after I set my TV to "Zoom" mode. Makes things a lot more tolerable.
You know what's pimp though? Creating a JPN account, setting up the Ad-Hoc Party app, learning your way around that, getting into a game, THEN switching your TV's input to the PSP's signal.
Pure awesome, you gotta believe me. ^_^
@hanulbada: But they are suffering from a widespread condition called "Abbrevitis". It usually affects youths, morons, and the spelling challenged.
Note that the last two are separate, but such is not always the case. :/
@Geist002: "But so did Phantasy Star Portable, and that sucked worse than shooting myself in the crotch...
I hope you aren't speaking from experience.
chaotictails
The concept art looks cooler than Monster Hunters...
@Archaotic: I wouldn't have it any other way. A good hunter knows how to keep the flow in the game so that battles become a breeze.
@ph15h: *evil laugh*: I agree that the camera is a turn down for many and really wish there was any other way to handle it. But using this system i'm able to: move around (sprint while i'm doing so), attack (also use an item or dodge) AND move the camera at the same time, so i guess its pretty functional (on a side note: it will not be so with the GO)
@haruna: You obviously have not played MH on ps2
Marduk
@Can I Really Be the Hero?: I guess it's the whole "enemies knock you down by breathing next to you, but you can't stun them with a freaking bazooka" thing that bothers me. I'm too aggressive in games like that to play strategically, and thus I suck, making it not fun.
@Archaotic:I wouldn't say Monster Hunter has shitty controls, but I would say it has a steep learning curve.*Laughs at people stuck on Yian Kut Ku*
Can I Really Be the Hero?
I wish one of these games would come out on 360.
Shugoi
@tehdorkz: Phantasy Star Online and Monster Hunter play entirely differently. All they really have in common are 4 person quests.
WarlordPayne
@sentroshi: Monster Hunter Freedom Unite has actually been getting very positive reviews. I attribute it to the fact that these reviewers seem to have played the game, unlike when the original came out.
WarlordPayne
The art style in this is a bit more appealing.
Michael Sanchez
@haruna: The right analog stick on the PS2 Monster Hunter was for attacks.
WarlordPayne
@Curse_Lily: Too bad the PS3 version was cancelled right? Maybe it'll come back?
I just hope it comes to the US.
Omatic
@FarmboyinJapan: Wouldnt they technically be Pha-Sta style games? Phantasy Star was technically the first. Kinda like when people talk about God of War button mashing sequences, Shenmue was the first that I know of that had that.
tehdorkz
@ph15h: *evil laugh*: Agreed, Monster Hunter on PSP's greatest weakness is easily the camera. You can swing the camera to chase cam with a trigger a-la PSO whereas the PS2 version of Monster Hunter let you use the other analog stick to control the camera.
MH3 on 360/PS3/PC would make me a very super happy camper...
haruna
@Geist002: That's a shame PSP was so bad. The original Phantasy Star Online was an absolute brilliant game. Still my favorite game of all time
tehdorkz
@wazzzup16: Geez for a second I thought you were devoweled.
hanulbada
That top screen reminds me of Zack vrs. Behemoth (was it Behemoth?) from Crisis Core, the first battle..anyone agree? :D
NekuSakuraba
@Jourdal: No kidding! If it was a mating of that...:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
haruna
Wow looks like they even copied the HUD
can we please get some of these types of games on the 360 or ps3. i would def drop coin on a ps3 version of this
Chris Farmer
I hope this will be more interesting than Monster Hunter. I dunno, I play Monster Hunter but..... I can't find myself liking that game. :\
EVERY major Japanese franchise is going to have a Mon-Han game within the next couple of years, we have already seen Phantasy Star, Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear (allegedly) and Dynasty Warriors come up with their own version of MonHan. And if MonHan 3 hits on consoles as well, we can expect MonHan styled games to be available from every publisher imaginable, on every console imaginable.
One more thing, playing MonHan "correctly" (IE, putting your thumb on the analog stick, and your index finger on the D-pad) causes intense pain...and while I haven't poured that much time into MonHan yet, my Japanese friends who do often complain of "MonHand."
FarmboyinJapan
Well, looks a lot more interesting than Monster Hunter due to the more modern setting as opposed to typical medieval fantasy vomit.
Hmm, looks interesting. Hopefully it's alot easier to pick up and play than Monster Hunter is.
Looks like monster hunter, but with black monsters.
@Kamen Rider Gatack: Looks like a modern-day Monster Hunter, which could be better.
Who cares if its roughly the same idea if its fun?
@HooDNerD88:
This game looks like a cute love child between MH and SMT
Jourdal
@Archaotic: It's been mostly the camera holding me back.
Hope I can get into this one. Never could figure out why MH didn't click for me, a Pokemon and action game fan. We'll see.
This seems much more modern. If this gets better reviews than MH I'll pick this up.
That Monster Hunter Unite demo was so confusing. :'(
@Curse_Lily: I still feel like I could have gone blind during this one multi-hour session of N+ had I not finally given up...
I'm only saying what everyone's already thinking... [Censored]
how bout they switch roles and make us the monster hunting the humans eh? depending on the kinds of humans the monsters get stronger and work their way to some place like olympus to eat gods.
\
maybe that's the game? I know it's not but i can hope.
Arkhaiz
@Archaotic: I got no problem with the controls, but gazing at the PSP screen for a long period of time now that is a bitch >_<
But i give this game a try nevertheless.
Obviously you're not hunting monsters, you're eating gods.
@boogiewithmoose: THIS.
Monster Hunter could do with a little less "harsh reality" and a little more "over-the-top".
That game has an unattractive wall around it when u first begin to play and try to learn the system. With this promising formula already there, they trade Guns4Swords and Dinosaurs4Demons and it looks great.
@Blitzgrilo: Someday, we will have mutant dinosaurs like those in Jurassic Park, and then release them in Japan since they want to kill monsters so badly. Just some day...
As an enormous fan of Monster Hunter, this of course piques my interest...
But so did Phantasy Star Portable, and that sucked worse than shooting myself in the crotch...
...I'll stick to my Monster Hunter until I see footage, read articles, and check out reviews.
Now to go back to my White Monoblos farming...want to get my KKK-like Monodevil Armor... :D
Geist002
@boogiewithmoose: i c wut u did tharr hahaha
wazzzup16
Well, since Godzilla, Ultraman, Spectroman and National Kid, japanese people like those games, they all build huge weapons to hunt these monsters we all see on TV and make fun of that, but there these monsters kill and destroy Japan, so they're training for the day when this could happen.
Blitzgrilo
As long as the controls are decent, I'll give it a try. The shitty controls have always been the reason I don't play Monster Hunter.
Wow, no shame NamBan
I've always wondered what it would feel like to control an actual human being instead of a dump truck while hunting monsters. Officially keeping an eye out for this.
