You can buy it way cheaper than that now, for the PS1 or 360 anywhere in Japan...

@Trumpet: That is actually quite common - as far as I can see a lot of Rockstar games are published by Capcom. One of the reasons why you don't see any of them on Steam in Japan. Which sucks by the way.

It is also the reason why there are more PS1 games on the PSN in Japan. Less publishers = less negotioations = easy additions. That said - if Nintendo can do it with virtual console, Sony should be able to do it as well.

@LordChris915: Actually that is not entirely true. Especially for games, as they can be manufactured in the region ( you need a special cover anyways), they are usually priced to market. E.g. even in Japan gamers won't pay 12000 Yen for a game and even if the rate is good publishers won't mark it down.

Additionally it is usually $=Euro, not $=pound, e.g. the PSP Go won't be 250 Pound and the new Tony Hawks won't be 120 Pounds but 250 Euro and 120 Euro respectively.
The reason is simply that the markup would be a bit too extreme.

Capcom has done a lot for both Western and Japan. I wish they could release Call of Duty: World at War in Japan, along with some other western games. They seem to know how to get Japanese gamers to play Western game.

Nice to see a GTA title getting the PS3 the best title (Japan's version of Greatest Hits). I wonder how the 360 version did in Japan I remember the 360 version was on #3 top selling software. I wonder if it got Platinum Collection (Japanese version of Platinum hits).

I don't think it's a really good price. A large electronics shop had it on discount for €25last week (all versions). The suggested retail price is (apparently) €44.99 (which is, granted, about 300 us$ ;) ).

While it might not be "greatest hits" stateside, you can get it on amazon for $36.99 shipped, or you can get a used copy from amazon or half.com for well under $20. I got mine back when blockbuster had BOGO on used games, and ended up selling the second copy online for more than what I paid for the two together. Ended up getting paid a couple bucks to keep a copy of the game.

I've yet to finish GTA4. Got it a year ago, completed about 30% of it, stopped playing for some reason (probably boredom) and never got back into it again.

Holy crap. That means if its on the budget line, that means it sold well in Japan. Well no surprise after seeing that 39/40 score on Famitsu.

Still weird to see the Capcom logo there. I know they published it for Japan -_-

its all about the e@DukeColossus: Its all to do with the exchange rate, Japan's is very high and USA/Europe is very low, therefore if you spend $100 in Japan, your actually spending the equivalent of 9665 yen.
After that its all about how businesses decide to trade, alot of American Exporters charge the same number of Pounds for an item in the UK as they would dollars in the USA despite the difference in value, that means that the Item is cheaper in the USA than in Britain and the company makes a bigger profit.

How come Japan gets all special treatment for imports, but their imports only get jacked up.

...I don't think it's gone discount HERE (in the States) yet, has it?
