Hey Pirates, Beware Of Fake Dragon Quest IX Hentai Boobies!
The “leaked” version of Dragon Quest IX is malware. The ROM was dumped early on to Japanese bulletin board 2chan and is actually a hentai slideshow show called “DS Owata”.
Maybe download “Dragon Quest IX JPN DSi Enchanced NDS iND” if you’d like a hentai slideshow? Oh, this bricks your DS. Buying it legally does not.
Happy faces courtesy of website DS-Scene.

Piracy showed that people did not want to pay absurd amounts of money for a CD they might only want 1 or 2 songs on... -ShadowOdin
CD singles, cassette singles, and 45s illustrated that long before the MP3 was invented. Strangely, you're aware of them, yet you think that the MP3 was somehow groundbreaking in it's attempt to market individual songs to consumers.
As I argued, it was just the natural progression of the music industry. Once the capability to easily digitize music existed and internet speed and hard drive capacity increased, it was only a matter of time before someone sold digitally compressed music.
The second point I made, which you chose to ignore, is how piracy actually hindered the initial sales of digital downloadable music. Rampant piracy actually made recording companies hesitant to make their music downloadable and when they did finally agree, it was laden with DRM. Without copious piracy, we'd have been purchasing and downloading music years before it actually became available.
You wouldn't have those things without the piracty-debate. -ShadowOdin
Fair Use laws would exist without this so-called piracy-debate, as they are the basis of the protection of parody.
The the generosity you speak of regarding companies who voluntarily share their media on YouTube and other various sources has nothing to do with any piracy-debate. It has to do with ad revenue.
All of which exist without piracy, or some weak-minded, attempt to legitimize stealing which you call a 'debate.'
@reality.exe.torrent:
The MP3 was popular before Napster, but that is beside the point. My argument was the digital downloadable music available for retail had little to do with piracy and more to do with the natural progression of the music industry as had been illustrated many times over before.
When technology allowed, the music industry always moved to the smaller or more durable format, even when quality was sacrificed. To think that piracy had an effect on this is hubris in the extreme.
You know, this has convince me piratan is wrong. I'll keep using gamefly instead.
Oh wait, I'm not buying those games either. lol, guess I'm as bad as the pirates.
@doubtful: Of course it is the direct result of piracy. Piracy showed that people did not want to pay absurd amounts of money for a CD they might only want 1 or 2 songs on, and where most of the monetary gain did not even go to the artist to begin with.
And so the companies needed to rethink their businesstrategies, and one of the results is the ability to download single songs for a lot less than what you'd pay for a CD. A lot less than you'd pay for a single, even.
And of course YouTube does that. Or else they'll be charged. But there's a lot of content on there that shouldn't be available. Can you deny it when tv-shows, musicvideos and even movies are available on there? Yes, a lot will be taken down, but even more remain on the site.
And you know what? Instead of having the site closed down, a lot of companies understands the value of YouTube and put up materials themselves. Like you can see entire episodes of MacGyver.
You wouldn't have those things without the piracty-debate.
@doubtful: iTunes was created because of the advent of the mp3, this is fact. the mp3 was popularised by Napster, this is also fact.
Did you know the first mp3 players were criticized for being pirate machines?
And seriously, you people are hilarious. This is not a good thing to have a DS bricker floating around.
@Chaos_Bringer: is porn really your friend if its coming from 2chan or a chan site at all? what else did people expect when chan is the sause?

@RevengaSweet:
Absolutely. It's Mighty Putty. Fuckin' Green to White Technology.
I miss Billy Mays.
@ShadowOdin isn't american:
...it is thanks to the piracy-debate we have services such as iTunes, YouTube (which is a legal grey-area)... -ShadowOdin
It's absurd to claim the advent of downloadable music sales is the direct result of piracy. It was simply the natural progression of the business. If piracy did anything, it slowed the advent of music sales and crippled it with DRM in the beginning.
And YouTube exists, not because of piracy, but because of Fair Use; when challenged, YouTube errs on the side of caution and the copyright holder.
@2c-b:
As does the person who J-walks, they deserve to be hit by a truck! -2c-b
Ah, yes, because losing one's life is analogous to your game system failing because you ran unauthorized software on it.
It all comes down to this - many gamers consider themselves morally superior to everyone else. -2c-b
By not pirating, I am morally superior to those who do. It's not a matter of thought; it's a fact.
You make the childish assertion that perfection is a prerequisite for justice. It's not now, nor will it ever be. Though I'd prefer pirates to face fines and jail time through our court system, I cannot help but think it is justice that they suffer the mild consequences of having their systems destroyed by software they intended to steal.
@SacGamer: but that's not the case here. it's about context (as has been pointed out, repeatedly at this point). viruses against thieves = good, viruses against people checking their email = bad. it's not complicated.
jack m
@SacGamer: like game developers? or you mean the people that are trying to steal the game in the first place? yeah, i don't know why anyone would want to mess with them...
jack m
@Squirrelbot3000: And we're done.
@Everard: I think his avatar already did. More surprise than rage I suppose.
@Grinning Colossus: I think they're giving what every pirate deservees; a broken piece of hardware.
Aawwwweesommmee faaaace! :D
@Everyone: Good job at being self-righteous wankers.
Should I guess then that everyone think malware is justifiable has never pirated anything? I somehow doubt that.
Piracy has gone beyond being a simple theft-crime, and while it is not the optimal solution to just let them be, it is thanks to the piracy-debate we have services such as iTunes, YouTube (which is a legal grey-area) and Spotify.

only people who fall for this stuff are the ones that dont have any common sense. I mean like asking yourself "wow, is the game really out this early? maybe I should check" or, "this cant be real, lets run a virus scan".
Anyway, anyone who downloadewd it thinking it was real HA HA, its what you get for randomly downloading everything you see.

@SacGamer: It all comes down to this - many gamers consider themselves morally superior to everyone else. They would never dare pirate, so clearly anyone who does deserves to be raped, killed, and then have the rest of their family killed too.
Obviously these gamers are perfect in every manner and are totally right in lacking any empathy whatsoever for victims of "their own crime". I mean someone who goes a few miles over the speed limit totally deserves to die too. As does the person who J-walks, they deserve to be hit by a truck!
No wait, they don't and the people who "think" someone deserves to have their DS bricked for this ... well, that's just plain disgusting.

Sounds like it only breaks the DS you try to run it on. Should have just let the news slide. Let more amateur pirates get caught off guard. If I were Level 5 and Square Enix right now, I'd be laughing my ass off that pirates are getting what they deserve. Cheap porn and broken hardware.
Now, I'm not exactly innocent of all that... plundering business. But anyone who is out there trying to justify it is just spouting bull. This is a crappy thing we do. And if some saps get caught with 160 dollar brick because they wanted a game that didn't exist yet, maybe that's a good thing.
Psudonym
Thanks for the heads up Brian!! I buy a ton of games, but do dabble in the periodic dl's, stuff like is always a appreciated:)
GtheMVP99
its like a big FU you pirates, but at the same time its like heres some free hentai.. weird.

If I was Squeenix i'd package up an old bricker, stick it on the largest bulletin board in the world, then spread the word to games news sites that if you download illegal DQIX ROMs they'll ruin your hardware.
Off the record, of course.
silasthemariner
@SacGamer: No I completely see where you are coming from and understand. But your original question wasn't about the morality of the situation. Rather it was:
"Why do people program things that do things like brick people's expensive hardware on purpose?"
The answer to which is that they find it funny and know how to do it.
trunkenmath
@petrieslastword:
You missed the point.
A dick is a dick, no matter what size it is. From my point of view Batman has the worst dick, the pirates are just his viagra.

@Benguin: DarkFader eh? So this would be the taihen.zip bricker. LMFAO. Nice. Hopefully people who downloaded this ROM had FlashME installed otherwise I don't think it's possible to undo.

Um.... awesome?
Come on guys,
Let's stop kidding ourselves. Punishing pirates? please.. these guys did it for the lulz not a sense of righteous vigilantism.
If they had the opportunity (and know-how), they'd do the same thing to legitimate cartridges.
@Nobuyuki: Perhaps it should be taken as "Hey guys, don't pirate software because sometimes you'll get one of these and you'll be screwed."
ThursdayNext
This is awesome I hope it happens more often. I have no remorse for someone who pirates ds games and gets there system bricked.
@Red Teliko Needs Food Badly!: I can imagine masses of songs and videos replaced by a certain rolling of a person named Rick...

It isn't any kind of "justice". It's called being a ****ing dick.
No vigilante has the right to to serve justice... except Batman, but he's much cooler then this guy. Hentai, really?
I'm not really surprised that this is happening.
@petrieslastword:
I don't feel bad at all. I remember on the old Nintendo forums someone complained that a downloaded rom bricked his DS and was pissing and moaning that Nintendo told him he wasn't covered under warranty after he told them how it happened.
My response to him?
Ha Ha.
I don't feel bad for pirates at all. You want to run the risk in order to essentially "steal" content, then it serves you right if/when you pay the price. In the wise words of Ike, "you'll get no sympathy from me."
Avrum
@bobtheduck: I think the guys that made it are trying to ruin the life of some little kid that wants to play Dragon Quest.
@Monolith:
GoNintendo did the same thing a couple of days ago. It's funny, because the editor of that site in particular tends to talk up preventing piracy, cheering on Nintendo and third parties for getting R4 out the way (to some extent in Japan) along with other indsutry measures to prevent piracy of software.
Yet he has no problem posting similar stories that essentially warns the crowd he hopes will legitimately obtain those games versus getting them illegally. It makes no sense to me really.
Avrum
You guys need to work on your smiley placement or at least tag this as Maximum Risky.
@Red Teliko Needs Food Badly!: Whoa now, let's not start talking crazy here.
@RedStar - Workers of The World Unite: Now see, it's those griefers I hate. They're not worth the air they breathe =/.
SacGamer
@SacGamer:
They do it for the lulz.
RedStar - Workers of The World Unite
@Nobuyuki: Why shouldn't they post it? It'll help some people not screw up their NDSes. I mean, if Totilo is going to post a saga about how he doesn't understand how an achievement works in a game nobody cares about then something that saves an NDS or two from death is more than welcome.
@octalass: It looks a lot like seamen to me...
StarFox9000
@Benguin: Hmm. I'm surprised we don't see this type of thing more often. I can only imagine the frustration of trying to run a "legit" homebrew service only to be overrun with pirates. Maybe some day user made games won't need these types of tools.
SacGamer
@undefined: Rather than attacking someone who dares question the morality in creating a virus to brick a console and releasing it for download, why is nobody questioning Kotaku's decision to post this? It's not news, the only purpose this story could serve is to say "Hey guys, when you're trying to download DQ9 don't download this one!" Not to mention that a good amount of cock is still visible in that image.
Nobuyuki
@SacGamer: There's actually a somewhat interesting backstory to this particular piece of malware. It's actually an old bricker that was first released a couple of years ago by DarkFader. DF was (still is? I dunno, I've been out of the game for awhile) one of the central figures in the DS hacking scene in the early days. Anyway, if I remember the story correctly he was pissed off at the scene or something and wanted to punish pirates (as opposed to legitimate homebrewers) so he wrote the first DS Bricker. There were two variations though, and this particular one didn't spread around as much (the other being disguised as a r0mloader). He eventually apologized and released tools to try to help people with broken handhelds.
Yeah, because malware is the solution to piracy. Cheer 'em on! The collective level of stupid around here is astonishing.
@oosiegewolfoo: Understood. No hard feelings. I haven't had the best of days myself either.
If someone is a hardcore pirate, you're probably right. They probably don't deserve to keep the platform they're pirating for.
Though, as someone who doesn't pirate, I do admit I wish there was more in the way of demos for handheld titles...Guess there's always gamefly for that though.
SacGamer
LOL you didn't even block out the top of the dick in the first pic

@mitch_93: Could've fooled me. I thought it was sunblock.
Because they look kinda hot.
@SacGamer: sorry kidna came off like an ass. I rudely suggested you getting linux.(yeah my bad...kinda tired and get crotchety when im tired) But in all honesty..you don't think this is the punishment piraters deserve?
@SacGamer: If you get caught, you'd probably be sued for much more than $170. Although it's vigilante justice, it's probably still better than if you were punished legally.
spannu
@You Are My Friend!: I just noticed that... They censor the boobs but leave the juice AND EVEN THE FSKING PENIS...
Does not compute...
Wait, so why are you warning the pirates then?
I would have liked this post more if it didnt warn folks.
@Liptons: They make that?
meow-mixer
@oosiegewolfoo: Did you miss the part where I said I don't necessarily disagree or that I'm against pirating? Dude, it seems like you guys are just looking for reasons to attack me.
SacGamer
@SacGamer: Linux. Problem solved.
So you support pirating? You don't think people should be punished? I'm sorry but you're logic is flawed.
@petrieslastword: Hell, even malware that dosn't serve such noble causes usually just exploits security holes in an OS that should have been covered anyway.
@Sir-Lucius has a level 93 Ubersaw: So, you want to see little Mr. Schwing-Schwong?
@trunkenmath: I don't necessarily disagree with this I don't think. I just also hate the person programming the virus...because I've had to deal with nasty PC viruses before when I was doing nothing wrong (other than being too cheap to subscribe to good anti-virus software).
Do you see where I'm coming from?
SacGamer
@SacGamer:
No. We can't. People who program virusus with the sole intention of punishing those engaging in illegal and immoral activity do not suck. If your virus only targets users who attempt to download child porn, then I support your virus. If it only targets those attempting to steal passwords to bank accounts, then I support your virus. If like this, it only targets those attempting to boot illegal pirated software on their system, again, I support your virus.
"WHOOOOOOO!! BOOOO-aww.."
@SacGamer: Simple reason, it is really really funny.
Picture some smug entitled fanboy spending months posting on forums and spamming chatrooms about how DQ is the best and we should all buy it. Now imagine this fanboy has an r4 and never bought a DS game in his life. He sees his new treat come early and grins with self satisfaction and dreams of being the first to write "spoiler" posts on gamefaqs as he fakes his way through the import. Fanboy powers up, but oh no where is DQ, wait lol this is a joke release but hey at least there is some hentai. Man this is pretty hot... (1 short fap later) Man that was great, wait why is DS not working? WTF Bricked. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
Or something like that. If you steal from a convenience store you are prepared to take a baseball bat to the skull, if you steal a game online you should be prepared for the internet to take a baseball bat to your hardware.
trunkenmath
is it sad that i've seen the doujin on the right for he is my master?
@petrieslastword: I suppose I can see where you're coming from. That's cool. Can we agree though that people who program viruses suck and leave it at that?
SacGamer
@Trygle12 is FREE!... and waiting for Disgaea 2: Hell, I saw Ishikei on Kotaku's front page and thought that this would be the happiest day of my life. His older stuff doesn't compare to his newer work, though...
@AnalysisDialysis (and a MudkipNDS): No yaoi from Ishikei. Just wimminz.
do a search for "nise midi doronokai" or "ishikei" (preferably the second) to find some artwork.
mintycrys is HOT for Bayonetta
@BasBalManic: Is that who it's from? I just heard it from someone years ago. I never knew the original source.
@SacGamer: Pirates need to be punished more often. I personally think this way is funny.
@coolbho3000:
Interesting, never knew this kind of stuff went around in the PSP and DS homebrew scene
@SacGamer: It's a bit much, but do you think said pirate downloaded just one piece of software? Most pirates notoriously download multiple pieces of illicit software.
Smash them into the dust I say
@SacGamer:
You're running under the assumption that for most people this is the first pirating they're doing. Most of them have probably pirated, hundreds, or thousands of dollars worth of DS software. Them getting their $130 system bricked I don't feel the slightest bit of guilt over.
It's the risk you take when you choose to download pirated software. I wish this would happen more often.
@Monolith:
Hey there's going to cops at the corner store at 7and 8 Pm so do whatever you need after that time
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: It does appear that someone beat you to it.
Alternate
@SacGamer: Because they're apart of the same flock of idiots.
K1NG EV1L
I like how Kotaku is warning pirates. Guess they know who their readers are. It's a nice gesture, but isn't this like warning burglars about cops staking out a certain building? Helping us not get screwed when we attempt illegal activity?
Monolith
@Jawmuncher: There was, actually. The DS bricker was actually inspired by a version for the PSP, I believe. This kind of stuff is possible on just about anything that can run homebrew software.
The "DS Taihen" bricker has been on antivirus sites forever. There was another one that just displayed a brick wall. The hentai one is supposedly really rare, so I don't even know how it got out again.
Antivirus programs should actually pick it up, I think. Info on this "trojan": [vil.nai.com]
coolbho3000
@petrieslastword: Umm yeah? The system bricking is much worse than the act of piracy. Breaking someone's 170 dollar hardware over a 20-30 dollar piece of software is a bit much, don't you think?
SacGamer
@Trygle12 is FREE!... and waiting for Disgaea 2: I'll tell you that! Those kind of events make me really awkward, with my tallness and (Indochina Viet) skin.
But wow. His stuff must be famous.
So, does he also do yaoi? Or just stick to the "female spectrum?" ;P
@SacGamer: Outside of spannu's particular brand of tough love, I don't think anyone is attacking you. However, you have to realize this isn't some trojan fucker or anything that is attached to some random jpeg you loud up. In order for this to cause you any harm, you have to be engaging in morally questionable activity in the first place. It's karma, really.
@SacGamer:
You're being attacked because this is malware directly targeting a segment who is pirating their games. This isn't going to effect honest consumers in any way, shape or form, so what is the problem?
It's the same reason that I feel if someone tries to rob my house and my dog attacks them, I shouldn't be punished. If they weren't trying to rob my house, it never would have happened.
ROFL - the best part is, they probably got off to it and kept it. Good old pirates.
@phinehas: Well, according to the majority of the posters here, most people seem to think it's harmless or even beneficial. I'm against pirating because it hurts small publishers, but I'm against people who program malware and viruses even more.
Seriously, why am I being attacked here?
SacGamer
@AnalysisDialysis (and a MudkipNDS): Nope.
I wasn't introduced to his works at Comiket. His stuff sells out fast. Not to mention I haven't gone in over two years' ;P
Plus I stick out like a sore thumb at those events cause I'm a tad bit darker than everyone. >_>
He occasionally puts his efforts into non-risque works, and they turn out just as great.
@spannu: In the USSR? Communist!
I'll make you suffer through Ringo's drumming? Paul's vocals? John's bass? George's guitar?
Damn!
It's very difficult to feel bad for anyone who falls victim to this. You're pirating software, and as such know the risks involved.
@landonkun: The heat must be terrible for them!
@coolbho3000:
Thats a nice bit of history there.
Wonder why we haven't seen this on PSP
@SacGamer:
Do you really think anyone is going to feel bad some pirate go their system bricked? That's the risk you take when you pirate.
How could someone take something as wonderful as pornography and use it for an evil purpose like crashing hardware? Such a thing is unprecedented on the internet!
@SacGamer: The internet doesn't change human nature, all it does is reveal it.
Crescendo
@SacGamer: Pirating games = harmless fun on the internet?

Seriously though, why am I in the wrong to hate on Malware/Virus programmers that ruin expensive hardware?
SacGamer
This was first released by Darkfader a very long time ago to protest commercial piracy and bricked several DS systems. He later apologized.
If you run this on your DS or DS Lite, it is likely very bricked (there are hardware flashing solutions but they're complex and you'll have to look them up), unless you have Flashme installed (very few people do since the advent of slot-1 flashcarts).
This will not affect DSi, though.
