Hey Pirates, Beware Of Fake Dragon Quest IX Hentai Boobies!

The “leaked” version of Dragon Quest IX is malware. The ROM was dumped early on to Japanese bulletin board 2chan and is actually a hentai slideshow show called “DS Owata”.

Maybe download “Dragon Quest IX JPN DSi Enchanced NDS iND” if you’d like a hentai slideshow? Oh, this bricks your DS. Buying it legally does not.

Happy faces courtesy of website DS-Scene.

    @doubtful: And you think piracy was what caused DRM to be so draconian on music services? You think that a group like the RIAA would not have done it anyway? That is laughable. These companies live to control people. Legit music download services could have existed years before they did. They only didn't because the music industry refused to knock the cobwebs out of its collective brains and realize it was what consumers wanted. The only reason they ever finally conceded it was when they finally saw they really had no choice. It might have been the next natural leap for the industry, but they had to have their heads pulled out of their asses to realize it. Napster was who got shit on their hands doing so.
  • daizyujin
    @2c-b: I love you. Seriously, going through these comments, I was beginning to think nobody on here had a conscience or a brain. Thanks for reviving my faith in the "gamer race."
  • daizyujin
    @SacGamer: What people on here also don't seem to realize is that this piece of software is not as clear cut against piracy as it may seem. This could easily be renamed with a new icon and header, repacked, and distributed as legit homebrew as well. So to say the only people hurt by this is pirates is false. Don't forget, one good reason to have the R4 is to give the DS features of a multimedia device such as MP3 capability and the ability to run video. Collected with homebrew there are other reasons to own an R4 than just to pirate DS games.
  • daizyujin
    @PegasusActual: Agreed. Most the posters on here must be draconian assholes. Seriously people get over yourselves. Destroying somebody's property for "stealing" an item that is in infinite supply is not the same as stealing from a grocery store. The direct effect on the person being "stolen" from is not in any way the same if the person had no intention of buying the product to begin with. Does it make it right, no, but the analogy is bullshit. Just because somebody does something, illegal doesn't mean you should have your property trashed. I am sure at least a few of you have done a few drugs in your life. I don't like them at all, how about I come over and smash your big screen tv and piss on your Wii? Anybody that wishes this on anybody else is just a self serving jerk and needs to look in the mirror. I am sure you all have plenty of skeletons in your closets. The maturity of some of you is questionable. Besides, you do realize that what this person did in creating this bricker is a crime itself do you not? In the eyes of the law, you don't break one law to punish someone breaking another. Its not funny that most of you hold this opinion, it is just sad.

    @Monolith: Maybe, just maybe, there's some readers who don't usually pirate but would've liked to check out some hentai. I know there's plenty of this stuff elsewhere on the Internet, but surely getting one's DS bricked solely because he wanted to view some cartoon pr0n on it is a bit harsh, hence, the warning.

    I like the fact that it bricks the DS. Perhaps if companies like Nintendo and Sony made deals with various publishers etc etc to put out "early copies" and ROMs that brick consoles, it would be 1. a way to stop pirating and 2. a way for more revenue. Think about it - do you want to play a game that could destroy your system? Annnnd with all the destroyed DSs and PSPs, you gotta go buy new ones right?

    @ShadowOdin isn't american:

    Piracy showed that people did not want to pay absurd amounts of money for a CD they might only want 1 or 2 songs on... -ShadowOdin

    CD singles, cassette singles, and 45s illustrated that long before the MP3 was invented. Strangely, you're aware of them, yet you think that the MP3 was somehow groundbreaking in it's attempt to market individual songs to consumers.

    As I argued, it was just the natural progression of the music industry. Once the capability to easily digitize music existed and internet speed and hard drive capacity increased, it was only a matter of time before someone sold digitally compressed music.

    The second point I made, which you chose to ignore, is how piracy actually hindered the initial sales of digital downloadable music. Rampant piracy actually made recording companies hesitant to make their music downloadable and when they did finally agree, it was laden with DRM. Without copious piracy, we'd have been purchasing and downloading music years before it actually became available.

    You wouldn't have those things without the piracty-debate. -ShadowOdin

    Fair Use laws would exist without this so-called piracy-debate, as they are the basis of the protection of parody.

    The the generosity you speak of regarding companies who voluntarily share their media on YouTube and other various sources has nothing to do with any piracy-debate. It has to do with ad revenue.

    All of which exist without piracy, or some weak-minded, attempt to legitimize stealing which you call a 'debate.'

    @reality.exe.torrent:

    The MP3 was popular before Napster, but that is beside the point. My argument was the digital downloadable music available for retail had little to do with piracy and more to do with the natural progression of the music industry as had been illustrated many times over before.

    When technology allowed, the music industry always moved to the smaller or more durable format, even when quality was sacrificed. To think that piracy had an effect on this is hubris in the extreme.

  • jessica73

    You know, this has convince me piratan is wrong. I'll keep using gamefly instead.

    Oh wait, I'm not buying those games either. lol, guess I'm as bad as the pirates.

  • ShadowOdin isn't american

    @doubtful: Of course it is the direct result of piracy. Piracy showed that people did not want to pay absurd amounts of money for a CD they might only want 1 or 2 songs on, and where most of the monetary gain did not even go to the artist to begin with.
    And so the companies needed to rethink their businesstrategies, and one of the results is the ability to download single songs for a lot less than what you'd pay for a CD. A lot less than you'd pay for a single, even.

    And of course YouTube does that. Or else they'll be charged. But there's a lot of content on there that shouldn't be available. Can you deny it when tv-shows, musicvideos and even movies are available on there? Yes, a lot will be taken down, but even more remain on the site.
    And you know what? Instead of having the site closed down, a lot of companies understands the value of YouTube and put up materials themselves. Like you can see entire episodes of MacGyver.

    You wouldn't have those things without the piracty-debate.

  • reality.exe.torrent

    @doubtful: iTunes was created because of the advent of the mp3, this is fact. the mp3 was popularised by Napster, this is also fact.

    Did you know the first mp3 players were criticized for being pirate machines?

    And seriously, you people are hilarious. This is not a good thing to have a DS bricker floating around.

    @ShadowOdin isn't american:

    ...it is thanks to the piracy-debate we have services such as iTunes, YouTube (which is a legal grey-area)... -ShadowOdin

    It's absurd to claim the advent of downloadable music sales is the direct result of piracy. It was simply the natural progression of the business. If piracy did anything, it slowed the advent of music sales and crippled it with DRM in the beginning.

    And YouTube exists, not because of piracy, but because of Fair Use; when challenged, YouTube errs on the side of caution and the copyright holder.

    @2c-b:

    As does the person who J-walks, they deserve to be hit by a truck! -2c-b

    Ah, yes, because losing one's life is analogous to your game system failing because you ran unauthorized software on it.

    It all comes down to this - many gamers consider themselves morally superior to everyone else. -2c-b

    By not pirating, I am morally superior to those who do. It's not a matter of thought; it's a fact.

    You make the childish assertion that perfection is a prerequisite for justice. It's not now, nor will it ever be. Though I'd prefer pirates to face fines and jail time through our court system, I cannot help but think it is justice that they suffer the mild consequences of having their systems destroyed by software they intended to steal.

  • jack m

    Piracy has gone beyond being a simple theft-crime, and while it is not the optimal solution to just let them be, it is thanks to the piracy-debate we have services such as iTunes, YouTube (which is a legal grey-area) and Spotify.

    @SacGamer: It all comes down to this - many gamers consider themselves morally superior to everyone else. They would never dare pirate, so clearly anyone who does deserves to be raped, killed, and then have the rest of their family killed too.

    Obviously these gamers are perfect in every manner and are totally right in lacking any empathy whatsoever for victims of "their own crime". I mean someone who goes a few miles over the speed limit totally deserves to die too. As does the person who J-walks, they deserve to be hit by a truck!

    Now, I'm not exactly innocent of all that... plundering business. But anyone who is out there trying to justify it is just spouting bull. This is a crappy thing we do. And if some saps get caught with 160 dollar brick because they wanted a game that didn't exist yet, maybe that's a good thing.

    Ha Ha.

    I don't feel bad for pirates at all. You want to run the risk in order to essentially "steal" content, then it serves you right if/when you pay the price. In the wise words of Ike, "you'll get no sympathy from me."

    GoNintendo did the same thing a couple of days ago. It's funny, because the editor of that site in particular tends to talk up preventing piracy, cheering on Nintendo and third parties for getting R4 out the way (to some extent in Japan) along with other indsutry measures to prevent piracy of software.

  • Nobuyuki

    @undefined: Rather than attacking someone who dares question the morality in creating a virus to brick a console and releasing it for download, why is nobody questioning Kotaku's decision to post this? Not to mention that a good amount of cock is still visible in that image.

    Nobuyuki

  • Benguin

    @SacGamer: There's actually a somewhat interesting backstory to this particular piece of malware. It's actually an old bricker that was first released a couple of years ago by DarkFader. DF was (still is? I dunno, I've been out of the game for awhile) one of the central figures in the DS hacking scene in the early days. Anyway, if I remember the story correctly he was pissed off at the scene or something and wanted to punish pirates (as opposed to legitimate homebrewers) so he wrote the first DS Bricker. There were two variations though, and this particular one didn't spread around as much (the other being disguised as a r0mloader). He eventually apologized and released tools to try to help people with broken handhelds.

  • PegasusActual

    Yeah, because malware is the solution to piracy. Cheer 'em on! The collective level of stupid around here is astonishing.

  • SacGamer

    I like how Kotaku is warning pirates. Guess they know who their readers are. It's a nice gesture, but isn't this like warning burglars about cops staking out a certain building? Helping us not get screwed when we attempt illegal activity?

    Monolith

  • coolbho3000

    @Jawmuncher: There was, actually. The DS bricker was actually inspired by a version for the PSP, I believe. This kind of stuff is possible on just about anything that can run homebrew software.

    The "DS Taihen" bricker has been on antivirus sites forever. There was another one that just displayed a brick wall. The hentai one is supposedly really rare, so I don't even know how it got out again.

    Antivirus programs should actually pick it up, I think. Info on this "trojan": [vil.nai.com]

    coolbho3000

  • SacGamer

    @petrieslastword: Umm yeah? The system bricking is much worse than the act of piracy. Breaking someone's 170 dollar hardware over a 20-30 dollar piece of software is a bit much, don't you think?

    SacGamer

  • AnalysisDialysis (and a MudkipND

    @Trygle12 is FREE!... and waiting for Disgaea 2: I'll tell you that! Those kind of events make me really awkward, with my tallness and (Indochina Viet) skin.

    But wow. His stuff must be famous.

    So, does he also do yaoi? Or just stick to the "female spectrum?" ;P

  • [ZTF]NSF Operative

    @SacGamer: Outside of spannu's particular brand of tough love, I don't think anyone is attacking you. However, you have to realize this isn't some trojan fucker or anything that is attached to some random jpeg you loud up. In order for this to cause you any harm, you have to be engaging in morally questionable activity in the first place. It's karma, really.

  • petrieslastword

    @SacGamer:

    You're being attacked because this is malware directly targeting a segment who is pirating their games. This isn't going to effect honest consumers in any way, shape or form, so what is the problem?

    It's the same reason that I feel if someone tries to rob my house and my dog attacks them, I shouldn't be punished. If they weren't trying to rob my house, it never would have happened.

  • SanjiX

    ROFL - the best part is, they probably got off to it and kept it. Good old pirates.

  • SacGamer

    @phinehas: Well, according to the majority of the posters here, most people seem to think it's harmless or even beneficial. I'm against pirating because it hurts small publishers, but I'm against people who program malware and viruses even more.

    Seriously, why am I being attacked here?

    SacGamer

  • Trygle12 is depressed, confused

    @AnalysisDialysis (and a MudkipNDS): Nope.
    I wasn't introduced to his works at Comiket. His stuff sells out fast. Not to mention I haven't gone in over two years' ;P

    Plus I stick out like a sore thumb at those events cause I'm a tad bit darker than everyone. >_>

    He occasionally puts his efforts into non-risque works, and they turn out just as great.

  • petrieslastword

    It's very difficult to feel bad for anyone who falls victim to this. You're pirating software, and as such know the risks involved.

    Do you really think anyone is going to feel bad some pirate go their system bricked? That's the risk you take when you pirate.

  • coolbho3000

    This was first released by Darkfader a very long time ago to protest commercial piracy and bricked several DS systems. He later apologized.

    If you run this on your DS or DS Lite, it is likely very bricked (there are hardware flashing solutions but they're complex and you'll have to look them up), unless you have Flashme installed (very few people do since the advent of slot-1 flashcarts).

    This will not affect DSi, though.
