@-MasterDex-: I see what you're saying -- I certainly don't have any hands in pots, but there are a fair few journos that seem like they do -- but is that any real justification for essentially stealing a game? This is the ultimate question you have to ask yourself the moment you defend piracy of any sort.

If you ask me, it's more to do with the simple matter of seeking out the good journos rather than simply thinking you're entitled to something you don't own.

Am i the only one here that remembers the early adoption prices for 360 and Ps3?

It used to be it was expensive to get into consoles. Sure its expensive to get into PC gaming, but you arent just buying a PC for games.

Admittedly, there are a lot of media options on the consoles, but until they offer a web browser ( Wii did thsi ), and Keyboard and mouse support for games ( RTS games in particular ), and the ability to upgrade your console to something more in line with current technology, short of early adoption with a new console... PC still has its perks. Especially with Digital Distribution, which the consoles have been lagging behind on.

Not to mention User Created Content. Im still playing mods for Jedi Academy... years later. User Created Content on the PC is perhaps THE major draw.

I wont say PC's are a better option. Especially for youth. But if you are an adult with a steady paycheck, and a love of First Person shooters that dont use auto aim, PC is the belle of the ball.

It's like piracy been widespread on the DS. There's so many out there that even if a game is pirated to high heavens, there's enough people that it masks the problem. I'm not saying this is the case with Prototype but it does happen. In the case of Prototype for PC, I have to put it down to lack of interest. There was no real buzz around the PC version, no one I know that games on PC was interested in it and it just snuck out onto the market beside the other versions.

Also, I'm talking about the UK; I'd be very surprised if a large majority of PC gamers over here did buy their games via download services

I'm not sure about the UK but here in Ireland, just about all the PC gamers I know use Steam regularly as there can be some great sales and games you wouldn't otherwise get in brick-and-mortar stores. Also, leaving DD aside, the charts are still skewed as they only track big retail stores or online retailers and not the smaller shops or sites that sell PC games. This isn't news to anyone who games on PC.

Just because a port of a particular game doesn't do well on PC doesnmean that piracy is to blame or that multiplatform releases should exclude the PC as a platform. Publishers and developers need to understand that people aren't going to buy their game if they don't market it or don't show that the game isn't some shoddy port.

Pc gamers get screwed over a lot and even if pirates play a role in that, publishers and developers play a significant role too. You know how the saying goes - Once burned, twice shy. I think that sums up the feelings of most PC gamers on the subject of ports.

Also, I'm talking about the UK; I'd be very surprised if a large majority of PC gamers over here did buy their games via download services, as a common complaint (seen plenty of times on RPS, for example; most recently when Blood Bowl was released at the ridiculous price of £40) is the fact that direct download prices compare unfavourably to retail prices; eg. Prototype is £35 on Steam but can be bought for £25 online.

(Incidentally, Empire: Total War is still riding high in the PC charts, despite the recent 50% off Steam offer which undercut even the best online retailer's price by a decent amount -- £15 vs £24. Even though it dipped a couple of chart places, I would've expected the drop-off in sales to be substantially greater if Steam really was accounting for such a large volume of sales. And it still sold more copies than Prototype that week.)

I would never get this game on my PC even though I newly built one. Console reigns supreme for these games. Now PC is getting the shaft on titles that it SHOULD have like Halo 3, Fable II and Gears of War 2. A sign of it's demise on the gaming front. I believe in the future PC gaming will be totally niche (which it's already becoming.) If Apple makes a console, its definitely over.

I own a PC and a Wii. What games I can't find on the Wii, are either made for the pc or will be eventually ported to the pc.
Bad ports aren't bad because the pc isn't good enough for them, most of the times it's just bad programming. Other times it's deliberate. It's never the pc's fault.

So next time you try to compare machines to people, do your homework.
Because the pc is the sexy educated girl which you never have a hope in hell to get, and so you badmouth her to cover up your own inadequacies. Now back to the runners up...

@-MasterDex-: a lot of this is based on the assumption that one will like mods. that can vary between games. I hate Fallout 3 mods, but like oblivion mods (maybe just because most of the FO3 ones involve women looking even more slutty).

Also, personally, they aren't the game changers you find them to be. I grew tired of oblivion quite quickly even with mods.

Also (this is a rant in general, no real targeted person), i'd like to know what happened to just playing a fucking game, instead of people grandstanding about how their chosen method is better, or less expensive. I pity those to stubborn to see the attraction of the other side, for they truly miss out on some great things.

Look at consoles. Look at how much you have to sink into a Wii in order to get it to a moderate level where you ave enough controllers and peripherals. Look at the 360 and the LIVE subscription, plus all the peripherals. This doesn't even begin to mention games, for which everyone knows consoles have a much higher and faster turnaround. That's why the used game market for consoles is profitable. Because, in all honesty, the console is the bitchy one that needs the latest games, uses them up, and then wants something new.

The PC is a hard working machine. It does EVERYTHING the console does plus a slew of things the consoles couldn't possibly fathom to do. It plays games better plus there's countless other wonderful nuances to explore. Yes, you need to buy a new GPU or CPU every 3 or so years, but you know what? You gotta buy your girl a nice anniversary gift every now and then, too. With all of the mods available for PC games, you can play the same game for years and years on end without it ever getting stale. It's like spicing up your relationship. @TheHeeyyy: COD4 isn't a port. Firstly, the series began on PC, it's the consoles that got the ports of Call of Duty. Secondly, the engine was built from the ground up on PC and IW originally being PC developers developed the game on PC.

A thing called the media? No offense to good jouralists but the majority of the gaming media who offer their opinions on games are have their hands in the bribe pot. Also, even if on the PS3, you barely get any demos, you still have the opportunity to pay a small fee to rent a game and try it out. PC gamers don't have that luxury nor do we have the luxury to trade in a game we find we don't like. There's certainly justification to the "try before you buy" philosophy that many PC gamers adhere to. It's not our fault that the industry is unwilling to change their business model to mesh with the times.

Also, saying a PC gamer who doesn't pirate is the exception to the rule rather than the rule shows how little you know. Sure, piracy is prevalent but that doesn't mean 9/10 PC gamers are pirates.

@curly haired boy: Don't look at the amount of piracy, look at the sales. In the UK at least, the 360 version of Prototype sold very well (it went into the individual formats top 40 at 2 and is still in the top 5) whereas the PC version limped into the chart at 12 and sank without trace a couple of weeks later. Whether the reason is piracy or just lack of interest, the fact is that multiplatform games (without a strong online multiplayer component, anyway) tend to sell like crap on the PC at the moment. So while piracy on the 360 may be an issue, the fact is that sales are still good.

@QualityJeverage: I was surprised how well it ran on my computer. I have a 7900gs for my graphics card and the game ran extremely smooth, looking just as good as the console version.

i didn't do it.

today, i purchased the game off of steam. for quality titles, piracy isn't a problem - but for PC gamers, you can't rent a title like you can with console games. and while i've never done it (and never will), the "i'm pirating to test it out" argument has a smidgen of justification when there are games like Damnation on the market.

give PC gamers the ability to rent games (or more regular demos) and i guarantee less piracy and more sales.

@curly haired boy: well the other side of things is that so many PC owners seem to expect everything for free. free movies, free music, free games. Because it's so easy to do, it's become a right. I think until they create some way to feasibly combat that, you'll see alot of games released on consoles first to bring in the day one crowd. Of course, console games get pirated too, but there is more involved with pirating consoles than just downloading a torrent. usually.

As for the above analogies. I like to think of consoles as a casual sex relationship. You ring them up when you want a good time, it's an in the moment kind of thing. PCs are like a marriage, or long term relationship. You have to put in constant effort to maintain it. Things will go wrong, and they often wont tell you why, you have to figure it out. For a while, everything it works well, and it's fantastic, but there is just so much maintenance involved.

Now I'm eagerly awaiting Resident Evil 5. It looked beautiful on consoles, PC will look stunning I'm sure.

I just hope the heady mix of Jack Black, voice work by rock legends and the headbanging' aesthetic give Brutal Legend wide enough appeal to make it a bonafide hit.

I know that we'll buy it, but hardcore niche game sales usually amount to about 400,000 copies, and that's hardly a commercial coup.

@BobTable4Four: I think a lot of people need to stop using piracy as a crutch. If you take a look at any torrent site you'll see thousands of people downloading Xbox 360 games, yet no one is hesitant to release titles on Xbox.

A quick look will also show Nintendo DS, PSP, Wii and basically every other platform besides PlayStation 3 with a rather healthy community of pirates.

It's a poor scapegoat that needs to be put to rest and yet the PC gaming community as a whole is being treated like a bunch of criminals when in reality, if developers would stop giving us poor ports, chopping features out of PC versions and perhaps treat us like they do console owners, people might be inclined to purchase a few games.

@Trygle12 is FREE!... and waiting for Disgaea 2: Yeah, I remember downloading the DMC4 PC demo. Not only was it bug-free, it ran perfectly. No graphical glitches, perfect framerate, no missing resolutions or poor video options.

Granted, my PC is rather high-end, but if you do any PC gaming you know that no amount of kickass hardware can make your average terrible console port any better.

and PC has too much piracy, i think they did an amazing job making 360 and ps3 versions look awesome, real gamers have a console, not just a pc, and the publicity they did so far was perfect to sell a lot even if it's only on consoles

no need for PC, they shouldn't announce the PC version in 2009, just to make sure the game sells for christmas and that gamers don't wait for it on PC to download it for free
