London, Mapped In Warcraft Style
A programmer showcasing the capabilities of an open-source, dynamic mapping framework has rendered the entire world – in a Warcraft II motif.
You can head over to Cartagen, the mapping utility, and see for yourself. It runs in HTML5 and does not require Java or Flash. Punch in a landmark and off you go. (I did Big Ben, above).

@M*A*S*H: I picked up a few Purples and Blues from him. Overpriced clothes :)
@Snowbank: After searching Big Ben I got the pic above, but not the one in the original article(above my comment)
Funny that "Mapped" means very different things to video game designers than it does to Cartographers.
I was expecting to see actual buildings being rendered. oh well.

@deanbmmv:
When i started it I also got those black lines. But after is searched for something it worked perfectly.
LFG Harrods. Al Fayed drops phat loot.
@deanbmmv:
Yeah I thought I'd actually test it out to see if I was missing anything from just the picture and ... it didn't work. Oh well!

@deanbmmv: Test failed. FF3.5 (only current browser I know that does HTML 5 except betas) doesn't run it properly. i.e you just get loads of black squiggles which i guess are meant to be roads.
@drag: Just as well, look how long it took to complete Wembley!
You know, I've never actually been into London, only ever skirted around it. Unless you want to count Gatwick as London...
@drag: Yeah it just looks like a map to me.
I've played a bit of Wow and it doesn't really look like the mini-map in that.
On second thought, I've followed the article where they have a picture done up to look like it's in Warcraft. So dunno why they posted this boring pic. though I'm gonna do a quick test
Don't go to the bridge, the trolls are planning an ambush!
YourFreakingMom-Yeah that's right
@Chronixal:
Well, it's not like they're demolishing the square mile to make room for stadia.
drag
@CoatedTrout: That is almost definitely true.
I tell you what though, I do not envy the boys and girls at TfL come 2012.
@Chronixal: Well it's not a huge area.
Plus it'll probably look a lot better than the terraced houses that came before it.
A shame then that the face of London may well drastically change in the foreseeable future due to the Olympic Games.
That said, it's a fairly impressive piece of work, for what it's worth.
I suppose you'd have had to know at least something about Warcraft 2 for this to be cool and not just look like a bit of a mess.

They should keep on making Old-Timey maps like in Valkyria Chronicles. Those are the tits.
