Master Photoshop The Legend Of Zelda Way
Despite more than a decade of futzing about with Adobe Photoshop, my digital painting skills are considerably amateur. Creating something like David Cousens’ The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask piece above is beyond my skills… or is it?!
The answer is still “Yes, it is”, but Cousens fantastic Photoshop tutorial, in which he walks us through the step-by-step creation of his “Broken Link” digital painting, is extremely helpful in touching on the finer points of advanced techniques. A bit of computer arts knowledge wrapped in a tasty Majora’s Mask coating might just spurn you too to up your Photoshop game.
Cousens’ tutorial warns that this tutorial is not for the beginner, but for those “comfortable with radial gradients, overlay layers and clipping mask layers and have a good foundation level of artistic skill.” Still, even for the Photoshop clumsy, it’s a gorgeous little walkthrough.
Thanks for sending it our way, David.

@SuperZombieMonkey:
I was gonna say the same thing. "What do you mean 'even CREEPIER?!'"
@Mokka: ...and of course the image is awesome and such...
Mokka
Link's hair looks like a fairy standing on his hand and leaning against his forehead.

Nintendo needs to hire this guy as a conceptual artist for the new Zelda Wii game.
Awesome!
@THEMISSING: YAY!!!! you pointed out all these things!!! thank GOD every time somebody on Kotaku posts anything sarcastic, there's always a troll that doesn't get it. YES!!!
;) im just messing

one photoshop suggestion, buy a tablet.
@MaxDragon7 - Zombie Kotaku Outbreak!!!:
Yeah.... that moon is creepy as hell :S
VVsound
@tidushuyin: Actually I think he was looking for the skullkid who became the semi-antagonist of Majoras mask.
VVsound
@Showmeyomoves!: It's Tinkerbell!

@jive238: "The goal of this image was to take an existing concept and push it further. ... The transformations in the game always looked quite painful and upsetting; Link would scream in pain every time. I always felt that the game could have gone even further with the transformation, so I thought why not do it myself?" - quoted from the original article.
So yeah, I don't think there's much point in nitpicking this, since the whole point of it is to NOT look like the original character.
@MaxDragon7 - Zombie Kotaku Outbreak!!!: It's not "Ah-kah-ree-nuh"? "Ok-ah-ree-nuh" makes me sound like a hick, something I've been trying to avoid my entire life.
Photoshop is great, but I prefer Painter X for digital drawing.
stupid_mcgee: uber pyro > flaming hunter ([k])
most of these tips apply to texture painting too!
Reminds me of how much I want to see Majora's Mask remade with current generation graphics.
@ex_nihilo: Just draw everyday and you will level up in no time
@vanillakokakola: I say it as "Deh-koo". Mostly phonetic, although it could be anything.
The longest time, I used to pronounce 'Ocarina' as "Ah-kah-ree-nuh" instead of "Ok-ah-ree-nuh". Has anyone else done this?
:P
@THEMISSING: Calm down, bro. Even he knows he was nit-picking.
@tehdorkz: Ah, yes, that's it! Nice! :D
Yeah I'll try this once
i'm done with my Hi-V gundam
papercraft project
Malform
@vanillakokakola: "Day-koo" to me

@jive238: YAY!!!! you pointed out all these things!!! thank GOD every time Kotaku posts anything artistic, there's always a troll to dog it. YES!!!

Hey Mike! Post some of your art! We want to see your skills, we'll behave, promise!
pandafresh
Yeah, I totally need to know how to draw this.

@jive238: His hair always looked to be made out of hair to me...
@jive238: It's the artist's interpretation.
So no matter what you nitpick, he gets away with it by saying it's his interpretation of deku link.
This is why I love Photoshop. There are just so many ways to do everything. I wouldn't have done that picture the same way he did. I prefer less clutter so I wouldn't have done tons of clipping masks.
All I can say for the Photoshop novices out there is to take these tutorials with a grain of salt. They are not the definitive way to do digital art. Photoshop is a giant program, and these methods are great, but might not work for you.
I'm not a huge Zelda fan myself, but that's a great picture.
@mechakisc:
1. To reject disdainfully or contemptuously; scorn.
2. To kick at or tread on disdainfully.
@jive238: My friend said the same thing when i showed it to him.
I love it. But it doesn't look like Deku link, looks like the long lost son of Herbert from Oasis.
Rompehamster
That is amazing
@NukaCola: No, I'd recognize that tight ass anywhere. That's definitely Nav-- OMFG it's Tingle! O_o
Showmeyomoves!
Anybody can be an artist with photoshop, see, that's so EASY!
lol, now seriously,
In Mother Russia, photoshop paints YOU!
Nah j/k. After an entire day dealing with photoshop drawings today, I think that while tutorials and the basics that mena s alot are being teached to everyone now and then and almost every single tutorial show up the same procedure, and each artist can create their own, I find it amusing that people look at it and thing "wow, so that's how it's done, meh". Knowing how to do it and actually doing it are 2 different things, no matter how easy or difficult it is. So, each work of art is nice no matter the effort on it.
Man in the mirror
@JaztheSpaz: I always thought Deku Link was adorable and cute, he looked so sad and sweet... but here HOLY CRAP!! It's like they American McGee-ified him! It's pretty cool though.

Picture looks like it belongs on a Magic The Gathering card.

@CujoEtner:
no kidding, I think this is some of the best far art that I've ever seen.
A rather excellent tutorial. I understood most of the technical stuff, but I do not posses quite enough artistic talent to pull off a lot of it that he seemingly blows off, especially regarding the setting ("draw some clouds", "put some detail into the mountain"). I'm not very good at scenery...
I did learn some new stuff though, like locking pixels (I didn't know it had that effect D: too useful) and selecting the luminosity of your entire picture.
That looks like it would be a horrific transformation.
This reminds me, in your head, how do you say Deku?
To me, it's "dee-koo"
This makes me really want a revamped Majora's Mask. Too awesome
CujoEtner
Sweet, this is really helpful. Also, badass. The moon could've used more kick though, but great!
I always chuckle when seeing tutorials of this kind because I find that there are many points before the finished product where I would be totally satisfied and call it complete.
Even the rough colored sketches of some of these artists would make me immensely proud.
I definitely want the brushes he provided though! :D
FishstickAvenger
Now I'm sad that we will never see a game featuring a "corrupted" Link...
Rod_Z
I try to comment most of the time with something that will add to the discussion at hand but I just have one thing to say.
I absolutely love Link.
@ex_nihilo: me too..I can't pull stuff like this off with MSpaint
Mighty impressive...I need to step up my game...
@MaxDragon7 - Zombie Kotaku Outbreak!!!: Monkey Island ^.^
Hmm, if you look at Step 20..
Quote: "You look more like a flooring inspector" (+10 points if you get the quote!)
Where does this quote come from? I'm pretty sure I've heard it somewhere.
Also, a I'm little late with this but, it's an awesome picture! Every little detail is awe inspiring. So much from the game is in this picture.
Please tell me this guy has more Majora's Mask art.
If this isnt for beginners what is lol.
Twinbee
this really shows off the dark tone of the game.
Wow, it kind of takes all the pain Link suffered while being turned into a Deku and shows it in interesting details. Nice.
@jive238: Then use your photoshop skills to fix it. :p
The Gossip Stone is staring at me...
O_o'
Also, I've still got to play Majora's Mask. I'm about too, just as soon as I'm finished with Banjo-Tooie...
..Evil MOON! *runs in fear*
Deku link's hands aren't that big, and his hair is made of leaves not wood. Also his mouth protrudes from his face.
/nit picking
Spurn?
mechakisc
@Showmeyomoves!: That's not Navi, that's Tatl :P
NukaCola
I think you mean that Tatl looks kind of...sexy. Link was looking for Navi which is what led to the events of Majora's Mask.
tidushuyin
@LegendofMyth: HD shows many things you couldn't see at first.
I remember him being much...cuter?
Navi looks kind of... sexy.
Showmeyomoves!
Holy crap, Deku Link looks even CREEPIER there.
JaztheSpaz
That's awesome.
amazing
