Mecho Wars Adds More Challenges, A Second Campaign For Free

iPhone’s answer to Advance Wars, Mecho Wars, received a pretty substantial update to the game yesterday, free of charge.

The latest patch for fairly fun real-time strategy game seems to answer a lot of the issues brought up in my and other reviews of the game. Most significant is the addition of info tiles for each piece that can be brought up by tapping on a character. This tile tells you their movements, attack range and strengths and weaknesses against other classes of units.

The patch also includes two new maps to play through in the story-free challenge mode that you can only access after beating the original campaign. The biggest pleasant surprise is that the game’s update included a complete new single-player campaign, this time played from the point of view of the Landians.

New maps and a new campaign for free? All they need to do now is add online mulitplayer support and Mecho Wars is going to be a must have for the platform.

@AncientUnknown1: Song Summoner doesn't work on the iPod Touch or iPhone.

The next update will have online multiplayer according to the application description in the iTunes store. I just bought it now. You can't say no to the $.99 price tag.

holy shit! its mother nature! she gives me nightmares still. i hope this game gets a better reception than eternitys child.

the weird thing is im one of the few people that bought eternitys child and actually (kinda) enjoyed it. i just hope hes still going to release content for it like he promised (hint hint hint if youre reading).

@Nobuyuki: It doesn't, I'm still eagerly awaiting any iPhone/iTouch support for that game.

  • WizarDru

Uh, the iPhone answer to Advance Wars is Uniwar, actually. Granted, it steals some graphically from Starcraft, but that's hardly a BAD thing.

@(Zombie) Jolan: whoops. sorry about that.

Picked this up on sale the other day for .99 cents. It is pretty much an Advance Wars clone. Except of course for the fact that Advance Wars can cost, depending upon it's release time, $20-$30. For .99 cents I'll take a clone any day of the week.

If anyone, like myself, has yet to purchase this game, Mecho Wars is on "Mega Sale" for $.99 in the App Store.

@(Zombie) Jolan: Yep, nail on the head. 99% sure they were notes for a story.

  • Malfunktion v2

I deleted this game after only playing a couple of levels. The gameplay was wonderful in that it was almost an exact ripoff of Advance Wars. Where it failed me was the 5-year old art style of the characters. It felt like a bastardized Dr. Seuss book.

So, going to re-review now it has fixed some of the issues? Out of interest, (and assuming you're not going to re-review) how much do the changes better the game? Does it entirely eliminate the previous cons, somewhat ease your previous troubles, or not do anything really to solve your grievances? Damn, I'm going to have to get an iPhone (or Touch) some time at this rate, but I just can't afford it.... with all my buying of Gundam kits, Revoltech Figures and Figma Figures... And Transformers... And video games on other platforms.

@danw13335: probably part of an online conversation with a Midway rep if I had to guess.

  • danw13335

@(Zombie) Jolan: They fixed it now. I'd like an explanation though; that was pretty odd.

Looks like Crecente accidentaly paste part of conversation with a Warner Bros or Midway rep. It seems to be about Midway going under and being acquired no?

  • Outkastprince

@Twoje: I think it's a Subliminal message trying to get us to purchase Mecha Wars. That Crecente has a knack for these type of devious things.

  • Nobuyuki

    @AncientUnknown1: I don't think it does.

@IWNH - My Comments are Hidden Like Ninjas: or maybe its a subtle kotaku ARG

  • AncientUnknown1

I will definitely be getting this game. Also does the SE game released for the iPod work on the iPhone as well? I remember they released a game that used your music library to create characters.

  • DustbinCarbonara

This is actually pretty cool. As much as some people seem to bash iPhone games for being short cheap shite, you really wouldn't get that sort of support for a larger console game from a big publisher.

  • (Zombie) Jolan

@IWNH - My Comments are Hidden Like Ninjas: Keeping his hair so great has finally taken its toll on poor Crecente.

  • IWNH - My Comments are Hidden Li

@(Zombie) Jolan: Either that, or we're witnessing a blogger going crazy first-hand. Exciting times.

  • Twoje

@Outkastprince: It gets more and more confusing the more you read. What is going on!? :(

  • Gossy loves YOU

Oh, well as long as it was in accordance with UK law. Other than that... patching an iPhone game with a new campaign? I don't care what anyone says, it's a gaming platform I tells ya!

  • (Zombie) Jolan

I'm guessing everything after "New maps and a new campaign for free? All they need to do now is add online mulitplayer support and Mecho Wars is going to be a must have for the platform." is not supposed to be there.

  • Outkastprince

Free Mecho Wars and than something about Matt Booty. I'm confused, it's like an episode of the Twilight Zone.
