Music Charts Looking To Include Game Downloads

Further blurring the lines between just where music games sit in the video gaming industry, the British Official Charts Company have said that they’re looking to include downloads for music games in the actual music sales charts.

So every time a Briton downloaded a single in Rock Band, Guitar Hero, SingStar or the like, that sale would count towards the song’s performance on the charts.

These figures would be included in the “Download” charts, lumped in with music picked up from iTunes, Amazon, etc.

Omar Maskatiya, chart director at the Official Chart Company, says:

We have been in discussion with record labels and the various games companies that host games which allow users to download master recording versions of artist tracks. In theory they could be eligible to be combined with downloads of the same tracks that take place from the wide range of digital retailing services that currently make up our chart panel.

All that’s left is to nut out a deal with publishers and platform holders as to how the figures would be tallied.

I would say no, its not the same media, I can't make the song I downloaded to a gema available to any other place, I can't hear it wenever I want, I must play to be able to enjoy it. If they some how make it so we can put those song in a portable media, then be my guest.

@Stealth_chill: They do. Of course, since owning guns is (mostly) illegal in the UK, the police will be knocking at your door shortly.

@exion: But that's the exact line of thinking that may get more artists interested in putting their music into these games. Which would be awesome. I think the action of including music game downloads would be great for the genre.

Hm, this doesn't make much sense. I can see the correlation the Charts Company seems to want to highlight between the sales of music in music-based videogames and those of traditional music downloads, but I just don't think that's enough of a reason to combine the two onto one chart.

One type of purchase, the traditional music download, is made by someone who wants to simply listen to music they enjoy; someone who will be hearing this music while they drive, while they work, or just at their leisure.
The other kind of purchase, however, could have various incentives, some of which being how challenging the music is to play, or which songs are more fun in multiplayer. You also can't simply listen to the music by itself - you have to be interacting with the game to hear it.

Perhaps some sort of dual chart system, or even one where each track holds two rankings - one in the games and one in music only - could work well to fix this problem. I could see some hardcore musicians getting a bit annoyed if the charts were simply merged.

@exion: You're wall of text scared me, but I decided to read and reply anyway. While you do have a point, it could just be seen the same since it's the publisher who paid to license the song because of it's popularity. I think publishers choice is just as widespread as the masses. What I'm saying is the they're not likely restrict their choices anymore than anyone else, and the songs that they distribute will already have a place in the charts. But who knows. (Sorry for not being clear, need to take English again)

I remember playing a Final Fantasy 10 song (Zanarkand) long ago and the customers really liked it. Unfortunately it didn't end up well for me because when I told a lady it was from a game, she suddenly didn't like it and started telling me shut that garbage off. I was pissed throughout the whole day.

I really hope this leads to me hearing Portals "Still Alive" on the local radio station's chart toppers segment. That would be sweet.

@PeteyCoco: I gotta learn how to post with the new method :( . Inlining links to youtube, urls, etc doesn't work; Adding just a youtube video doesn't work...
  • exion
@Mit: exactly. Now if you could export the songs you download for rockband/GHWT/etc onto an MP3 player then I'd be all for this idea, plus I'd likely buy a lot more DLC!

I'm not sure I agree with this practice seeing as the songs purchased from video games come from a far more restrictive list than those of the regular chart; Feasibly any song could make it into the charts in it's current state (for example, if I released a song that caught the imagination of the masses and thus became a commercial success then I'd likely place within the chart), though by including an entire market where the only songs people can buy are decided by the publishers of certain franchises then we offset that possibility. I've never paid much attention to the charts as the kind of music that usually features in it often isn't my cup of tea, but my personal taste doesn't really factor in on this... Now if they had a separate chart for games downloads, that'd be more acceptable (so we get an album chart, singles chart, downloads chart and music-game chart)... Thoughts?

@Gortexfogg: Yeah, but how many people own a legal copy of their music? Hell, even my 60 year old parents use Bitorrent
  • Gortexfogg
This could lead to: NOW This is What I Call Guitar Hero XVX! An interesting idea, but people download music for a different reason than people download Guitar Hero/Rockband songs. And chances are, many people will download Rockband songs they already like, i.e. own in a music format.

@Michael Dukakis - Mets fan: If I remember correctly I believe its sales for the chart while radio plays have there own separate list.

A Britain citizen is a Briton? From watching Code Geass I assumed they were Britiannians. Maybe it would be better to give video game music separate charts or something. It wouldn't be fair to the artists without video game versions of their music.

I can't wait to see "The Touch" as the #1 single of 2009!

@zach a mac rack alack: well when you think about they are still technically purchasing a copy of the song, It's just interactive.I can see why the would come up with this.

I think downloading songs for use in games is slightly different though, as it's enhancing your gaming experience, not just for listening to a song. Then again, a download is a download.

@zach a mac rack alack: I didn't even think of that, this seems like quite a bad idea now that I actually think about it.
  • porkster
I actually like this idea. I mean, a download is a download right?

  • Stealth_chill
Do they also count every gun i download off X-box live as a real life weapons purchase?

  • Michael Dukakis - Mets fan
I'm not a music fan (yeah I know I know), but how do they measure the charts? Is it sales and radio play or something else?
  • Mit
IIRC, we don't own the rights to just 'listen' to any songs we buy on rhythm games (hence Rock Band 2's lack of its planned jukebox mode). Until we can do that I don't think this should happen.
  • zach a mac rack alack
So what, people who play video games don't also listen to music? Why would they want to count their vote twice if they got the song and the video game DLC for it?
