Ya' know, I've been noticing a good amount of people constantly talk about how sick they are of Jack Black in response to these promo videos, and while that's okay, and Jack Black CAN wear you out, I think he is absolutely perfect for this game. I truly feel after playing it that no one will be able to imagine anyone else doing the part.

@Ben Nadler: Funnier than the comedic genius of Schafer? Hehe...No I don't think so. As much as I love the D, I don't really think it lends itself to a game. A little known HBO series...yes. Several amazingly funny CDs...Yep! A Movie...eh...A game would be abyssmal.And since when can anyone judge a game by it's advertising. Last I checked, developers didn't actually write commercials. And when EA is publishing, expect the ads to be gaudy.If people aren't convinced that BL is gonna rawk by now, they aren't going to be convinced outside of playing it.

@NeVeRMoRe666: I would take Jack's spotlight-stealing with a grain of salt. It seems to be a running joke with the videos... like the one where he mistook Brutal Legend for a movie at first and Tim had to correct him.

@bwwardiii: I'm just gonna go out on a limb and say that the only way we would get a game THAT metal is if we let metal bands design the game themselves. Have you seen some of these track titles and album covers in the last couple of decades of metal? The covers are sweet, but in game format, they would be overwrought, pretentious, and with track titles about blood, light, unicorns, and ancient kingdoms of intestinedragonocide, I think the game would likely be so annoying as to be unplayable.

Metal's problem has been that it's taken itself too seriously over the years. Any truly "metal" game would damn near have to be painfully self-indulgent and repulsive to gamers (though some gamers love self-indulgent; look at late 90s Squaresoft). Thankfully, Tim Schafer is here to tone down the "metal" and keep the "game" aspect in perspective.

@jargy1: Oh no, you did NOT just go there! Tenacious D is pretty funny, imo. "Tribute to the Best Song in the World" is cleaver and that drive-thru bit gets me every time.

That being said, I'm with you in regards to Schafer games being missunderstood. Brutal Legend is going to be hilarious and no one, not even a fan of The D like myself, can say that something else would have made for a funnier game.

The quality of the writing is probably the last thing I'd worry about when it comes to a Schafer production. Now, let's see if he's found a way to avoid the weird difficulty curve for some of the platforming from Psychonauts...

Personally, as long as these videos continue to use "Pure Evil" as the theme music, I really couldn't care if they're funny or absolutely idiotic. There's Brutal Legend gameplay, and there's Iced Earth.

@Ben Nadler: You kind of blew your entire argument by classifying Tenacious D as funny.

Anyway, this game suffers from the same marketing screw ups that all Schafer games have (and I do mean ALL of them, dating all the way back to Monkey Island, which he worked on but wasn't lead on). They simply don't market it as a funny game in the right way. In Psychonauts they wanted to make it look like a whimsical adventure for kids...the same silly crap movies like Cars are about. And it was far from that. It was a truly hilarious mind-bending adventure. Full Throttle? Thrown out as a gritty biker game. Grim Fandango? Film noir serious detective type story. Not saying his games aren't what they advertise, but that's not the meat and potatoes of it either.

Anyone who doesn't like Schafer games miss out on easily the funniest man in gaming. I've even been a victim of the bad marketing. I avoided Psychonauts for a long time and then regretted not playing it sooner. This game is doing everything it can to make me not want to buy it. I don't want to control an army or a squad, just one character. I don't like metal or anything about it. I can't stand Jack Black or anything he does. These videos are terrible and make me think too much of SNL skits, which suck. But by God I'm not missing out on another Tim Schafer game. Because when I actually play it I know I'm going to be in tears laughing and telling everyone I know about scenes in it. All his games are like that and I can't imagine this won't follow the trend.

So pass it up, miss out on one of the last truly unique and creative forces in the industry. But for the love of all that is good and holy, don't say Tenacious D is funny.

While I understand where you're coming from and certainly Tim Schafer deserves more credit than he's given, it's not the worst atrocity for Black to call it his own game. When shilling for a new movie, actors tend to say "my new movie coming out" or something similar, despite the fact they had little or no activity in the creative process. It's pretty common practice in the film industry, and I can see why it might spill over in the game industry.

@D-K, owhoo... how unfortunate..: I love Psychonauts. It was kiddy and silly but truly amazing. I hope this will be just as funny, but these trailers aren't cutting it in terms of humor. I mean, fire breathing cat monsters are awesome. And blowing things up with a guitar. But it just seems poorly written. No way to tell until the final product comes out, though.

@Ben Nadler: You underestimate Schäfer.. Try psychonauts, some people told me it was kiddy and somewhat silly... i have yet to play a game that rivals it's humor. I have faith both in JB and Tim Schäfer, and i like zeh rock!!

I don't understand why they just didn't make a Tenacious D game. It would have been funnier. It would have been cooler. I'm sure the plot wouldn't have needed that much tweaking.

Either way, these videos are just plain annoying. I like Jack Black, and I was really excited. I thought maybe they would have a real cat, and tape it to a guitar or something. But no, it is a stuffed animal cat. And a fake guitar.

At least the game looks fun. But funny? Eh...maybe if you're 12.

God I didn't know that it was possible for this game to look better. The ONLY way it can get better now is if Guybrush appears and says "you fight like a cow!"
