New Resident Evil Film By September 2010
Director Paul W.S. Anderson talked up (spoiler alert!) a new Resident Evil film last fall. Anderson has been busy working on drafts of the script, and the film is supposedly set in Tokyo and Alaska.
An insider has told ShockTillYouDrop.com that an internal studio memo is pegging Resident Evil: Afterlife for a theatrical release by September 17, 2010.
No word on whether star Milla Jovovich has officially signed on for this picture.

Oh god please his only good movie in the series was the first one....man the last two sucked so bad. Why can't he go back to making something else. I can't believe so many people bought and went to see the last to RE movies.
Oh for the love god do we have to have another movie in the crappy movie story. Just let Capcom make another CGI movie that was good
@Lincolnsbeard33: really, there is horror in resident evil? the only time I was ever "scared" in a game was when I was fighting with the shitty controls while three zombies took 5 hours crossing the room to attack me.
cwbys21
@Ghetto Cornetto: Here Here. I totally agree with you on this. As campy amd cheesy as the games are, with the ridiclous characters/storyline, i think the films have suffered somewhat.
If it didnt have Resident Evil in the title, it would just be another zombie film. It needs to have something to tie it to the game franchise.
@Black_Ops_19:
No doubt it wasn't that good. But, when I first saw it (yesterday... or two days ago) it was in HD, and I had just toked a little.
In that sense, it wasn't bad. ;)
Invisible-Echidna
@Pombar:
Clearly making things worse is the order of the day. I know the first one wasn't exactly truthful, but i really liked elements of it. Particularly when it ripped off cube and had the creepy digital girl.
At this stage, failing to explain why the characters travel a whole continent away seems stupid enough to maintain the standard.
oskarkeo
Sweet. They aren't the greatest movies in the world, but I've enjoyed them none the less. Very much looking forward to a fourth installment, hope they get Ali Larter back as Claire for this one.
I liked all the films though I wish they had more horror.I did not watch them with expectations of a Resident Evil game storyline.I think most Resident Evil fans expected a storyline from the games.I did like how they used some of the characters from the games for the movies like Jill,Claire,Carlos. My only gripe about the third film is where did Jill Valentine disappear too? They did not even make a reference to her.Probably because the girl who played her was filming the god awful Bloodrayne 2 movie LOL. I do think they should up the horror factor in the next one but then again Resident Evil 4 or 5 the games were not survival horror games they were just action games with horror themes.
ceooflhm
If they go back to a movie like the first I will see it. Alica became some super god character so why add any other cast?
@Mad-Hobo: Yeah, I was stunned by how shitty the character animations were. I mean aside from a couple action scenes they were very stiff and sluggish.
@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.:
I understand the logic behind setting it apart from the universe the games take place in, but I would have rather the movies occured as side stories to the game to expand the universe more.
Bricked
@KeroseneClimax: DavidMovie.com my friend best way to loose your sanity and not your money on crappy movies.
@erlik: LOL well played made me laugh
@SenileProfessorOak: More pausing and over acting please.
@Flying with jets of blood like an emo Peter Pan.: Only reason to watch UltraViolet at ALL. I loves 5th Element though.
@Mad-Hobo: Jill Sandwich means something else to me.
@Pombar: Army of Alices fighting Super Japanese Nemesisesssss (Nemisii?) and working their way down to the Super home base of Umbrella where she finds the cure and heals the world. La La La LAAAAAaaa
Happy ending , all is well
... Until the Mars colony Outbreak, RE5 (Slightly better than the game of the same name)
@Mad-Hobo: Did you watch the extras? They were hilairious however the film itself was hit and miss (I mean Leon and a fringe?)
New Resident Evil movie...no thanks.
HALO-32
No one who wants a 4th Resident Evil movie shold complain about Hitman 2.
@tommyscomics: Nice prediction. You win a internets.
@LtdEdLoser: I thought i was watching a long cut scene from 1998.
Mad-Hobo
@ThursdayNext: But quite honestly there should be some decaying plant life to be found. Not just, 'hey we made the T-virus!' *POOF* ... desert.
Mad-Hobo
@Pombar: For reals, I mean... wheres my Jill Sandwich?!
Mad-Hobo
@laencythe: What about Ripley from Aliens? She was badass!
Mad-Hobo
@Pombar: Eh, Never did watch anything past the first one.
Mad-Hobo
I love the RE movies. Honestly. If people want them to be exactly like the games, they better look somewhere else.
Also, if Milla doesn't sign back up for this... :(
resident Evi@Vixtro: resident Evil: Abomination
MikoKeZ
@DoktorSleepless: Actually, I think all three of them sucked. I don't care Alice, beings as I don't ever remember her being in the games. Ever.
You know what they need to do? Someone needs to punch Anderson in the head, remove him from the Resident Evil franchise, and find someone else who knows how to make a decent horror movie, and not some incredibly horrible action flick.
Like I said, I don't care about Alice; scrap everything that that idiot Anderson has done so far and make a decent movie based on Resident Evil 1. I want to see a new take on what happened in the Arklay Mountains that involves Jill, Chris, Albert, Barry, Joseph, and the other STARS Members.
General Chase King of the Woodchipper
@DoktorSleepless: I think they are all pretty horrible. He took a survival HORROR game and made it a cheesy ACTION movie series.
I mean how do you mess up what genre it is? It says it in the game.
Lincolnsbeard33
@KeroseneClimax: I am right there with you. The only thing is if they actually did it right and made it a Horror film instead of an action film and sticked to the story it might actually be pretty good.
Lincolnsbeard33
I've loved all these movies, so sign me up.
I couldn't get into Final Fantasy: Denegeneration though.
Krakn3Dfx
@Pombar: I don't remember that in Code Veronica anywhere. I do remember having sort of slow mo quicktime events in 3 though
Lincolnsbeard33
@DoktorSleepless: I wasn't that wow'd by Extinction, honestly, and I wanted there to be more action rather than super mutantzombies. But I DO give Milla much props for doing her stunts and action scenes while pregnant. Much love.
@Flying with jets of blood like an emo Peter Pan.: I love Milla. Milla being badass makes me swoon. 5th Element, The Messenger, the RE Series, Ultraviolet. I'm totally fine with just watching a movie and seeing her beat up /everyone/.
The Resident Evil Movie timeline:
Resident Evil: Good for its time, not by today's standards.
Resident Evil 2: Better but still lame now.
Resident Evil 3: Only hardcore fans cared.
Now for the games:
Resident Evil: Good for its time, not by today's standards.
Resident Evil 2: Better but still lame now.
Resident Evil 3: Only hardcore fans cared.
Rsident Evil 4: Fing amazing!
Well then 4 (the movie) is going to win best picture!
tommyscomics
@noesmano: I'll agree with that. It became a Leon Is Badass And Does Everything Awesome love fest. Claire shot a gun once. Pfft.
Yay! I love Alice.
@raz0r81ad3: extinction was pretty disapointing. i'm actually a pretty big fan of the first movie, and apocalypse was at least decent. "magical-girl alice" was just a bit much for me to swallow though, and felt really unnecesary.
jack m
didnt the last one bomb completely? i'm a huge fan of the franchise and i thought so.
RE:Apocalypse was the best film, by far.
i really hope they don't do another one. at the very least, consider chris redfield/sheva as roles featured in an adaptation of RE5 based in south africa. that would be interesting.
@Rirath: I didn't think Resi 1 was that great. I mean I've watched it 3/4 times, own the soundtrack and watched all the dvd features but... I guess I do like it. o_0 I'm conflicted! 6/10 I'd give it.
Starship Troopers is a classic though, I love the "hidden" meanings and stuff throughout as well. It's the perfect film for whatever mood you're in, lowbrow, highbrow, all will enjoy the Troopers!
NunianVonFuch
@NunianVonFuch: You're right there, but look up the ratings on the RE movies. They're terrible, the original is setting at 34% for Pete's sake. Deserves far better.
And while I love RE & Fifth Element, let me add my favorite popcorn movie to this mix: Starship Troopers.
@[www.rottentomatoes.com] but not the 2nd (20%).
I'd agree with this.
NunianVonFuch
Im glad this is keeping him busy, hopefully means that Castlevania film he was gonna do stays dead. Ruining one of my favourite franchises is better than going in the backdoor of both of them.
No thanks.
@Invisible-Echidna: Degeneration wasn't bad compared to the live actions. It wasn't good... but I'd rather Degeneration before I watch the last two live action films. Extinction was horrid. lol

Black_Ops_19
Can someone just fucking kill Anderson or am I gonna have to do it myself?
Seriously, I know these goddamn movies make money but any self respecting horror/Resident Evil fan should be ashamed of themselves for supporting this garbage.
Why Capcom decided to go with this dildo instead of George Fucking Romero, I'll never understand.
(Read Romeros script here: [www.dailyscript.com])
These films (live action) were so disconnected from the Resident Evil Universe that true fans of the games lost interest.
The first film was actually a pretty good film. Good direction, good writing, and even payed homage to the games with random weapon drawers and even a typewriter in one of the corners. Some of the scenes from the second film were okay. The third film... unwatchable.

Black_Ops_19
Bring it!
Qu33f_Machine
@Sniper_Zegai: Silent Hill 3 was pretty g... point taken.
NunianVonFuch
@Alessar: I knew things were looking up when "Directed by Russell Mulcahy" came up onscreen. A man with some talent finally attached to the series!
NunianVonFuch
People...
There were 1000000 Mila clones at the end of extinction....
Many many people have already discussed this on the fact that after mila had her baby they had already started filming part of the movie.
I thought the movie was already in production.
Hell, it was even said before regeneration came out that they were already working on the movie.
So, Why all of a sudden is it a maybe?
Ur-Lord-Crypy
Of course Milla Jovovich will sign I mean what other work is there for her besides Revlon commercials?
The movies have always been fun for me. I can't wait for another.
Setting it in Tokyo would be great as long as there is no zombie karate.
Of course it should be called Biohazad if it's set there.
@Alessar: I found it to be one of those "popcorn" movies. Basically just disengage your brain, and watch things explode and get shot. In this way, it did spectacularly. Otherwise, you're right. Apocalypse felt like it actually fit in with the game storyline, even loosely. It felt great to see some familiar locales. The third felt like sensory overload, and Wesker wasn't badass enough.
@ThursdayNext: Yeah... Every critic in the world panned Fifth element and I freaking loved it, same with resident evil.
Also the same with transformers, I'm seeing a trend how Critics don't seem to like sci-fi... o well the movies are all banking enough to get sequels
@DoktorSleepless: I'm the opposite. I thought Apocalypse was terrible - dumb plot, bad characterization, bad cinematography, Alice's super powers were way too much. But, I though Extinction was much better. They skipped far enough ahead that they were able to just discard for the most part the misstep of how the second movie ended and the plotline it suggested (for the most part). The characters were a lot more likeable, the action was dramatic, and there was good internal consistency. Alice still had super powers but she had limits.
@LightAce: I'd agree with you on that, I was almost laughing at the third one. Wish they would just stop creating these films entirely.
@LtdEdLoser: I agree, I found it very stupid that Leon was using stealth tactics to fight zombies, the slow kind.
@laencythe: Desertification and deforestation, the two are actually closely linked. Plant life in the soil aids water retention, removing the plant life causes the soil to become dry very quickly, thus preventing/hindering the reintroduction of plant life, this coupled with the increase in concentration of "greenhouse gasses" given that plants are responsible for removing theses gasses could very well cause widespread desertification.
More information on the topic can be found here: [www.unccd.int]
The example in RE:Extinction is, of course, extreme, but the science is relatively sound.
ThursdayNext
@Vixtro: Degeneration was garbage too. I'd rather have watched every cutscene from RE1.
Goddammit Hollywood stop paying Paul W.S Anderson!
He's one notch above Uwe Boll, if you stop paying him, he'll wither and die, and everyone will be happy.
@Pombar: I agree, if you want to see any the first RE1 is all you need. It's just a popcorn flick, but in the realm of video-game-to-movie conversions it is one of the most enjoyable, IMO.
Zonrith
@Pombar: it will be send in the clones
LEELOO DALLAS MULTIPASS.
iceicemaybe
I thought Apocalypse was rock bottom. I personally gave it 3/10, but then Extinction came out and "topped it" (2/10 in my books), so I think this tendency is going to last.
@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: Indeed. They're not great cinema (but the first one is the best), but enjoyable fluff, nonetheless... and all of them better than the relentlessly expository Degeneration.
There is a heavy dose of irony involved in anyone lambasting the RE films for their plot and claiming they aren't as good as the games...
Honestly, I'd rather see the Asteroids movie.
twinturbo2
As long as I can keep seeing Milla naked...make as many terrible movies as you want.
Mike Daly
Let's hope they include a cumbersome inventory system and tank controls into the movie this time.
@Sniper_Zegai: Hey, I'm not saying the games aren't much, much better. Just, the first film is a decent brainless action flick.
@Can I Really Be the Hero?: It's because I hate freedom
@Pombar: Indeed if only there was some kind of horror based video game where you could be the lead female character who is a strong and intelligent person who does'nt degrade into eye candy or a simple romantic attachment but instead becomes a character all gamers will come to know and love.
If only we could have a movie based on that, but luckily we have Resident Evil! YEAH WOO ZOMBIES 'N' CHICKS, GOLD DESERT EAGLE, QUEEN LATIFA?!
@Hardcore:
and leon :D
chup88
@laencythe: Yeah, but she wasn't so much a 'badass action girl' until the end of the first film. So for a while, it was just neat to have a non-victim, non-badass female lead in an action film.
Then they threw it away and it became annoying, as you say. The second film was only worth it for the side characters, and even then messed up towards the end. The third film was barely watchable, even for the cheesiness.
Booooooooooooooooooo
@chup88: The right to respond to this comment...
...that right. Is now. MINE.
SenileProfessorOak
@Vixtro: Indeed. Degeneration beats all the live-action flicks pants-down.
Please, for the love of God... NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...!!!
Bernhard Binder
@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: Agreed. these movies are a happy addition to my popcorn films library, enjoying a coveted space next to Boondock Saints and Army of Darkness.
This article fails to address the most important question all REAL Resident Evil fans have:
Will this movie contain the line "You were almost a Jill Sandwich?"
That's all I need to know before buying my ticket.
Needs moar parasites.
@ThursdayNext: but come on, a virus causing the world to dry up? even the G-virus is more likely than that.
laencythe
@Pombar: bad ass action girls ain't refreshing. just annoying.
laencythe
@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: Yup, my wife and I both enjoyed them alot.
We have Degeneration now so there is no need for Paul Anderson to continue making these abominations.
@Invisible-Echidna: Wasn't really good either.
@DoktorSleepless: Were we watching the same movies, cause I thought it pretty much sucked.
LightAce
@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: Same for me. If you don't take them too seriously and not critical analyze it as if it were trying to win an Oscar then they are really enjoyable films.
F**k these movies. I'll play the games, thanks...
Degeneration wasn't bad.
Invisible-Echidna
@ThursdayNext: The More you know

@VladDracul: They should have not should of.
ThursdayNext
Because we all know, everyone wanted ANOTHER game-based movie.
Misanthropic Gamer
The only thing I have against these movies is that they have "Resident Evil" in the title.
I wish they'd just stop dicking about, film an adaptation of the first game and have done with it.
@Mancomb Seepgood: Agreed. I actually watch the first one from time to time. The last two...not so much.
And yes...I actually watched the third one on Blu-ray first, hoping for the best, but...no dice.
Like Yahtzee says: you can shovel diamonds into crap, but it's still crap. Only slightly more painful to produce.
raz0r81ad3
@ShadowOdin isn't american: You're a self-hating zombie, aren't you?
I see no other possible explanation.
erlik
Anderson can keep producing glorified fan-fiction, and I'll just continue to not waste money watching them. That's the beauty of choices. Seriously, one bad video game adaptation is bad enough, but a tetralogy of bad video game adaptations? Paul is probably the greatest troll in existence.
@SPECIALciaNAPKIN: Super-green.
@ShadowOdin isn't american: Not even fond of exploding their heads with a SHOTGUN! I pity you, sir.
Can I Really Be the Hero?
I think the 3 Resident Evil films are quite O.K., entertaining, and come with Mila!!
But the Transformers 2 the abomination, I keep wanting to bang my head on the chair in front when Shia keep 'escaping' from explosion after explosion after explosion.....
WAT THE FXXX is WRONG with Michael Bay to killed off my childhood heroes like this??!!
tingyu
@ThursdayNext: Tucker did that for me too... but the word was "K-K-K-Korben".
She [Alice] tells us that although Umbrella thought Raccoon City was an isolated incident, it soon spread. Within weeks, the T-Virus had spread to the entire North American continent, and within months, the world. It affected everything, killing nearly all plant life and turning the world into a desert. Oceans receded, and lakes and rivers dried up. Humanity was forced to evacuate the cities and stay constantly on the move in order to survive...
That's why most of the world is a desert.
Japan is a (relatively) small island and would therefore be more likely to have rainfall.
Japan, and many other Asian countries are stereotyped as having clean streets, also given that people are no longer around in large numbers to mess up the place the lack of empty mcdonalds wrappers is understandable.
ThursdayNext
don't care! because it will probably suck
LCampoy8
@ThursdayNext: I bought that on bluray -just- for her >_>
bandage-scene ftw =X
As the only person on the planet who is not at all very fond of zombies in any form or zombie-movies, I feel a bit alone.
@Flying with jets of blood like an emo Peter Pan.: You are not alone... love that woman. Have you seen her in .45? GOOD LORD.
Without giving too much away, you'd never be short of somewhere to hang your coat.
Ungruntled
I liked these movies hope it comes out soon.
ZOMG....!
They still continue making this HAXOR-Alice film...?
Why don't they just die and leave the RE franchise alone...? I had enough, no more please.............!
@#$%^&*%%$^#%@$%$#@
@VladDracul: It was Code Veronica that added it, which was some time before 4.
FAIL!
First film was good as a film, crap as resident evil. Other 2 films were both craptastic.
Even Blu-Ray couldn't save the last one for me.
I wonder if in this one they fully tap into the Matrix and have to fight off all of the agents with all of her clones, then maybe the Terminator will make a guest appearance and beat up Tyrant and Nemesis and Matrix Wesker all at the same time!
Seriously...worst game to movie thing I have ever seen. Resident Evil really should of just stopped after 4. This whole lets add the Matrix into everything has seriously ruined the franchise for me. Go play RE1-3 and tell me how much Matrix is in there, RE is about suspense and horror not doing backflips and slow motion bullet dodging crap.
VladDracul
they ruined wesker in the last movie :/
hopefully they'll make him less retarded in this one and maybe even throw in "complete.... global...saturation..."
chup88
Am i the only one who watch these movies purely because of Milla?.. I mean the 2nd movie was imo utterly awful but i still watched it for the hawt femme-fatale badassery.
@MellowJade: The first Resi film takes liberties with the games' plot, but it's a decent action zombie shooter with a few familiar resident evil trappings. Fans were mostly annoyed at the cast being replaced by new characters and the merest semblances of those they knew.
As shtty as they were i loved the movies. I cant wait until this comes out. Glad to hear a new one is on its way.
Jellopnik
As long as Mike Epps isn't on this one anymore. Oh wait he died in Extinction. But it still might suck.
Also in extinction, why the hell was the planet all in dessert and ruin when Japan still had nice city streets and it was raining? That bugged the crap out of me. And don't counter my statement because we got a full clear look at the planet in the beggining.
@The Swearing Gramps: While he doesn't do anything interesting, liberating or feminist with his use of strong females (instead just using them as eye candy), it is a tiny bit refreshing to see women in the lead in these films, compared with basically every other film in the genre, where they're support characters or romantic interests at best.
But yeah, the director's real reason on using female leads is just to show off sexy woman bits, so it's not that refreshing.
oh dear
lfcjake
@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: I like 'em too. Entertaining, enough references that I feel that they are staying true to the source and good production values (barring the cartoony licker in Resi 1). Also Mila Yo-ho-ho(and a bottle of rum)vich is smokin' hot.
Ever since she said "Pleaayes halp." in the Fifth Element I've been totally hooked.
ThursdayNext
I've never seen a Resident Evil movie, but video game movies always seem to fail either way.
The only good one I ever saw was Silent Hill, but the Mario movie kind of scared me with the non cute Yoshi.
Sweet, works for me.
Alot of people seem to despise these films but I honestly think they're pretty fun.
That and fictional science facilities tickle my fancy, as if that wasn't obvious enough already. <3
Life just keeps on getting better and better. Is it going to be another girl power all emasculating piece of crap like the previous Resident Evil movies?
The Swearing Gramps
I'd wonder how he'd follow the third one, but I think it lost the plot partway through the second film and ceased to even be enjoyable on that level as a dumb zombie film.
Hmm. If it's more like Apocalypse and less like Extinction, count me in.
