@Svend Joscelyne: While tastes do differ, in what reality does a game with 1 game-play element that lasts for less than 90 minutes (According to the reviewer) get a 9.0 when a game like FIFA which is regarded as the best football game in the world get an 8.9? It invalidates the score.

Let's look a little closer at that. IGN did a grudge match between Gears 2 and Resistance 2 and gave the nod to Resistance 2 as the superior shooter. So it's fair to say they hold it in high regards. Not surprising considering it has a 10hour story mode, a completely separate online co-op campaign and a 60 man online competitive mode, good graphics, fun gameplay etc.

FIFA09 - one of the most played games of the year, full manager mode, weekly free DLC, Be a Pro season mode, load screens are game-play sessions which are fun enough that you forget its loading, 1000's of players across 100's of teams, some of the best commentary in gaming history, many online game modes ranging from normal team play to clan style team development not to mention a tournament where the winner gets a $20k car, sports news feeds, physics systems, fun celebration system, replay, etc. All of this with some of the best football game play ever made - still not better than Flower?

Uncharted - OMG, this is regarded as one of the best games of this generation, the review's closing statement was "Say what you will about the PS3, but Uncharted isn't just a standout for Sony -- it's a standout for gaming as a whole.". Amazing graphics, great story, fun as hell to play, decent voice acting, 6 times longer than flower to complete yet still can't beat it in the score department.

Fallout 3 - Forget me going into detail here, IGN's 2008 Award for Overall Game of The Year went to Fallout 3, yet Flower and Noby Noby Boy get a better rating. Are you kidding me?

If I were to give you the choice between "Noby Noby Boy & Flower" or a combination of the above games for the only games you will play this year, you would be crazy to take the first option.

This one comes with the two best games on the ps3. and from what i hear, backwards compatibility might come through firmware, so if its true then it doesnt matter which ps3 you get. the only way the slim could beat this is if the slim comes with a great game or two at the 299 price. that and unless you really want a "greener" console which doesnt matter to me at all. all i want is to play games.

This is as good as the Halo3/Fable2 deal the 360 had. The only way this would have been better would be if it was Uncharted and Killzone2. I thought MGS was sorta... sucky. But Uncharted, the best PS3 game to date, with Killzone 2 (graphic whore combo) would be insanely good for newbies.

@Salen: You aren't alone on the desire for BC. I haven't ever played any of the original RE games, and if I spend 400+ on a PS3, I at least want to be able to go back to those games.

I just wish the PS3 had come out the same time as the 360. I would have picked one up then, but I really didn't want to wait for it. My lack of patience when it comes to buying things will plague me my whole life.

@Senten: In a way, it's almost a problem, like with the Elite 360 bundle that had Fable II and Halo 3. I would kind of like to upgrade from my measly 20GB 360, but since they chose such good games to pack in, it turns out I already have both of them, making the bundle less attractive.

Of course, this PS3 bundle is even less enticing, because I already have Killzone 2, MGS4, and an 80GB PS3 (with partial BC and the memory card slots, even :), so there's no reason whatsoever for me to consider upgrading.

Man, did I even have a point? These games are too good? I dunno, it's been a long day...

I see what you're saying, but I think my stance is "I want one, I can live without one". If the price dropped to the level where it was just irresistible, then that'd be different. I imagine most people who own a PS3 and not a 360 are in a similar position, you're not missing out on tons owning one or the other, just a modest selection of great exclusives either way.

Those that are on the fence could go either way, jumping on the bundle or opting to wait (either way it's money in Sony's pocket). And those that previously weren't interested may have a piqued interest and pick up the new model when it's released.

People are talking about Sony in a more positive light and people seem genuinely interested in what the new model may bring to the table. I don't see how that's bad for Sony.

I'm sure a sale like this will only spark thousands of gamers to cry out, "I'll get this when the price drops".

I have all 3 consoles, and I bought my PS3 when it was $600. And it's backwards compatible. And should I have waited until now to buy one?...ideally. But you know what? Even with my modest salary, $200 bucks extra spent for having a system 2 years earlier...in my book, not really that big of a deal. That's less than 10 bucks a month.

I think my point is (what's my point?) that people don't really want the PS3, but for some reason talk about wanting it, if only it cost less than...less than what? My Xbox 360 Elite cost me $350.00 bucks. The PS3 is no longer expensive for what it does. Then again, I love games.

I'm going away for July 4th tomorrow, to a casino resort with my girl. It's going to cost about $400...the same amount could be spent on a machine that will give and give for years. The PS3 is NOT too expensive at all. Unless you just don't want one. Which is fine. I personally must have God of War 3.

I'm guessing you own a PS2 already and truth is that PS2 games don't look that much better on a PS3 (I have a 60Gb and a 20GB PS3 and have played PS2 games on both). This deal is pretty sweet regardless of the lack of backwards compatibility.

Cool, this looks like it could indeed signal a 100 dollar price drop. I have had a ps3 since 07 so it doesn't really affect me, but now all the other gamers can start their new cries for the ps3 to be $199, instead of the $299 like we have been hearing for a while now.

Sony can talk all they want about not cutting prices, but they're going to have to move units one way or another... and packing in two sweet games (even if they aren't selling that quickly) isn't a bad start!

Still, this screams "clearing out overstocked hardware and software" to me. MGS4 sales are not moving (the game has been discounted several times, after being bought long ago by anyone who cared) and KillZone 2 sold well below expectation. PS3 systems still aren't moving either - especially with rumors of a cheaper slim model coming soon. If Sony wants any room in the supply chain, they need to offer a good package.

I found a guy who's selling MGS PS3 80 gig bundles for $250.

I thought they were extinct, but apparently he has some. So I just buy Killzone for $40...and I've still saved over $110 from this bundle.

@bakagaijin: No, it's not a great bundle and as a PS3 fanboy (you're damn right it's the best console on the market) I can honestly say - give Killzone 2 a miss. Yes it's amazing graphics but the gameplay is subpar and games like Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 will give you more pleasure.

I wanted to love Killzone, I preordered it, I bought it day release, I loved the first cutscene to the point where I would play that scene over most games but the gameplay itself is just not great. What more, Sony the fucking idiots they are, neglected their own advantage and didn't force an install which means half way through a level you think the game has bodged because it freezes for a minute when in reality it's just loading. Bad Times.

If all you want from a shooter is amazing graphics, pick up Killzone 2, else - avoid like the plague and don't fall for the Little Big Planet or Flower bundles either. I don't know who is rating these games but whoever thinks they are top quality is a fucking dickhead. Sure they are weird/cool concepts but they are not executed in a good way. Look for Modnation Racers to destroy LBP in fun/features and N+ is already better than it just not as much hype/

The PS3 has some quality games but it also has some critically acclaimed greatness that is well over rated and some fucking awesome games like Super Rocket Powered Battle Cars that is mint (though flawed) and gets a 50.

I fucking hate critic's who review games like Flower/Noby Noby Boy as a 9.0 - it just makes no sense. There are far superior games. Both got like a 9.0 on IGN and fucking suck.

Then, they make lawyers email the sites, but not Sony lawyers, so it looks like a rumor, which builds up more hype, because EVERYONE LOVES RUMORS. Now they have this bundle to get rid of the old PS3, get more attention to PS3, and making the rumor look more real. More hype. Then, they will announce the SLIM, making the rumor real, and everyone goes batshit insane saying how awesome this is. Hype train plot.

I find it odd how similar this is to the Halo3/FableII 360 bundle last month. It's been all but confirmed now that the 360 is planning a whole new SKU strategy in September, so it looks like this is Sony's way of cashing in before the August price cut.

@D-K, owhoo... how unfortunate..: That should be the PS3 slim (PSthree?) launch bundle. You put that at $299 and it would sell like hotcakes.

They should release a few different bundles like this.
Games thats sales are dying down that could potentially sell consoles. The reason they are doing it is because the sales for the games are probably so high that they don't think they can get anymore sales out of the current install base, So they are using them to increase the size of it.
What I wonder is if they think Kill Zone 2 can't sell systems on its own merits, so they think it should only be used to make Metal Gear Solid 4 look all that much more appealing Metal Gear Solid 4 & another game, more so than Metal Gear Solid 4 & Kill Zone 2.
I hope thats not the case because Kill Zone 2 is an outstanding game, but I can't help but wonder.

I disagree...if you bought it "too early" as in picked up a BC console, because imo, the tons of PS2 games that I own and play are better than those two combined. Of course, some may disagree.

This is one of the best deals I've seen in awhile. The closest would be the Xbox 360 Elite bundle with Halo 3 and Fable 2. This is so tempting for me to grab one.

@Firelance: Yeah, you don't just do an official bundle like that. It doesn't happen in the real world unless something mysterious is afoot.

Also, if the new slim is better and/or has a pricedrop it won't make the people buying the last phat ones feel so bad due to the good game.

Over here that bundle is like buying a 299$ (not american, but it makes the example easier to understand) console + the two games.

Sony is absolutely tanking with the bundles first an Uncharted bundle then Little Big Planet/Wall-E bundle,
and now this!!! I think there was a Metal Gear Solid 4 bundle before so this is just icing on that really.
It could be the Metal Gear bundles started to drop so then, they decided to spice it up and make it new to restimulate sales for the MGS 4 bundles.

Stores really are bumping out the bundles now.
Bundles have been pretty decent in UK, the PS3 seem's to have slowly dropped £20-30 off depending on the store, so I think a price drop is on the way (if it hasn't kinda slowly happened)
I'm still sceptical on the Slim though, it seems far too early, it's like 3 years old, the Slim's usually didn't kick in till like 5-6 years into the PS n PS2's life span. But it does seem obvious that guys are clearing out 80GB for something, even if it ain't the slim.

Sony your finally seem to be on the right road, no don't steer off and take that detour, just keep going until you see Exit Price Cut.

@Svend Joscelyne: My point is that FIFA is a game which millions of people will play all year round, the single player options alone are extremely lengthily and well crafted. There has been free DLC on a weekly basis with the Live Season, it's the best looking football game ever made and some would argue that it's also the best game play of all time in a football game. Factor in the multiplayer which has clan/MMO elements and lets face it the presentation on EA's games are always quality. Mix that with an alright sound track and some of the best sports commentary heard in a game and it's a beast of a game.

Flower lasts 90 minutes and has 1 game play element, not only should FIFA have been rated higher but it should have destroyed it.

If FIFA is an 8.9, Flower would be a 2 or something.

Let me put it this way - if the games I listed above were the nominations for best game of the year and you had 1 million people voting, less than 1% would vote for Flower yet it beat it in the ratings. (Disclaimer, not an actual fact, though I would love Kotaku to post a poll based on it to see)

@TearsandScreams: Fair enough. I just think people talk a bunch of shit, that's all. I understand the PS3 has had a reputation of being overpriced, but people don't let that go, and at this point, it's silly. But when money is tight, 1 or 2 consoles is enough. Except for my money, I'd rather splurge of the consoles and not on other things. That casino trip I mentioned is a rare thing for me to do. But entertainment goes a long way. And luckily, my girl loves video games, and loves that they make me happy.

Killzone 2 for example, what game play aspects were particularly fantastic? The aiming? - No, it had to be patched a couple of times and still feels off. The motion use? Awkward, unneeded and not desired by the main user base. Maybe it was all the loading that takes place while you are playing. -

The reason Killzone 2, didn't get the Haze treatment is because the graphics and sound were phenomenal mixed with a crazy amount of hype. As a shooting game though, there was nothing special gameplay-wise that hasn't been seen 100 times. It was a step back in a lot of respects.

Little Big Planet vs N+. Hype vs Fun. Yes I love Sackboy, Stephen Fry is god and the Play Create & Share concept should be in every game ever made but the actual game play was no where near as fun as N+ which also had the Play, Create and Share a good 6 months before LBP released. So what tipped the scales - Stephan Fry? LBP is rated as the 4th best game of this generation (360/PS3) according to Metacritic, where as N+ doesn't even make the top 50.

Hype and sheer pompousness often lead to scores that are a lot higher than they should be and I hate it when that happens.

@Mike Newlad: IGN isn't a hive mind, and it's extremely unlikely that the same person reviewed all those games. It seems games like Noby Noby or Flower always tend to score higher since there is nothing remotely comparable on the market. They offer unique experiences (not to everyones taste) at low prices. Now take for instance a game like Dark Sector, in my opinion an average game by all accounts and it's review scores tended to reflect this. Now imagine that when Dark Sector was released there was no Gears of War, no Resi 4, no Uncharted. The game would have been met with unanimous praise and would likely have recieved top honours from websites and magazines alike. Hence the reason that shooters like Uncharted and Resistance, and games in other croweded genres sometimes tend to score lower because their scores are relative to other titles in the genre. It has nothing to do with Flower or Noby being better games.

As for my earlier response I guess it boils down to whether or not you present your opinion as opinion or opinion as fact. The latter will almost always illicit a negative response whilst the other will usually encourage constructive debate.

To bad the current model lacks CF/SD card slots, SACD, and PS2. The defunct 80GB Motorstorm bundle paired with a post purchase 500GB was arguably still a better console, albeit lacking the all important Emotion Engine. If digital photos, super CD, and PS2 aren't important to you, then for sure pick this up, but consider using the left over funds for at least a 320GB drive.
