Resident Evil 5 PC Dated, Benchmarked

Capcom not only brings us the final September release date for Resident Evil 5 on the PC, but a benchmark program to see if we’re better off buying a console instead.

New costumes, an improved Mercenaries mode, and support for NVIDIA’s new GeForce 3D Vision tech will have PC gamers lording their superior versions of Resident Evil 5 over console players come September 15th, as long as their rigs are packing the juice needed to get the job done. To that end, NVIDIA is offering up a benchmark tool at its Resident Evil 5 downloads area, along with a 3D Vision technology demo for those interested in seeing the game’s cut scenes in full 3D.

Capcom will be showing off the PC version of the game to the public for the first time at the San Diego Comic-Con next week, so if you’re planning on attending, drop by the Capcom booth to check it out in the flesh.

@Neko_Tech: Retail version of SF4 only requires online activation (through GFWL) if you want to play online. If you play offline it only requires the DVD in the drive. I think it uses SecuRom but I'm not sure.

@Paradox me: KB+M for SFIV LOL. The controls there are so gimped. But I'm confident RE5 and BC will be good like LP and DMC4 with the KB and M.

@Kougeru Matsuoka: Awww, i kinda liked Lost Planet on the PC. Well for me at least the controls didn`t seem problematic, then again i never tried it with a gamepad.

  • Narishma

@stupid_mcgee: uber pyro > flaming hunter ([k]): It's not a new trend at all. I remember for example Square releasing a benchmark demo for FF11 a while ago, and even updating it every once in a while. Capcom has also done it for most of their games this generation (Lost Planet, DMC4, SF4 and now RE5, maybe Bionic Comando too but I'm not sure).

    Narishma

  • Narishma

@LisetteAcestes: I have a similar setup, except with only 2gb or ram and a 8800GT, which is basically the same thing more or less as the 9600GT. I get around 40-50fps at 1440x900 with every setting at high quality and 4x AA.

  • neojam

Why does the game looks so damn dark in the bright daylight? Its almost like some turned contrast to the max :/

Also i knew that capcom replaced few black guys with asian/mexican/caucasian models, but in the demo it looks like 90% of the populations is anything but black...

  • mcderek3000

From what I've seen in demos, Capcom gave run beautifully on the PC.

I haven't bought any of their games until now, as I'm not really into fighters or Devil May Cry. Res Evil 5 may change all that.

@homernoy: I didn't get screenshots, but the gist:

    E6600 Pentium Core 2 Quad 2.4 Ghz
    Geforce 8800 GTS 640
    2.75 GB RAM (PAE)

    2x AA was 35.8 FPS
    16x was 28.9

    Both scored a B.

Also these are the gameplay tests. I didn't run the cutscene tests because, meh. I'd assume higher FPS for both.

  • MACH1ne

Thank you CAPCOM for using GFWL and ruining it for me. I havent been able to log in to my profile for a week now and they dont even acknowledge there is a problem. Damn you Microsoft!

  • Kougeru Matsuoka

hope this doens't end up like their Lost Planet port...that was horrible without a 360 controller

Did anyone else experience an unexplainable drop during the 3rd scene? I dunno, maybe because I'm on ATI or something...

Capcom is rockin the PC lately, yet another of their games on my list to buy. I'm really liking these benchmarks they are releasing too, keep it up!

    Q6600 @ 3.2
    GTX 295
    4GB DDR2 @ 800Mhz 4-4-4-12 1T
    abit ip35-Pro
    Windows 7

    1920x1200
    DX10 default settings, no AA

    Variable Benchmark
    109FPS average.

    scored an "S" optimal ;)

The idea of releasing a benchmark to the public is AWESOME! Almost as good as releasing a demo, in fact.

  • jp182

@MrKlorox: well i just bought the mobo, memory and upgraded my power supply and got a new 23" monitor on sale so i'm looking at the $100 range. I'm thinking a radeon 4850 or whatever the equivalent Nvidia card is (whatever Newegg has on sale when i get the money).

  • stupid_mcgee: uber pyro > flamin

@AncientUnknown1: Yeah, this seems like a new trend. Mostly just by Capcom. Personally, I really like the idea. It's like a live demo you get to watch and it will let you know how well your rige can run the game. I had a ton of fun watching the SF IV benchmark with all of the effects and such.

    stupid_mcgee: uber pyro > flaming hunter ([k])

  • stupid_mcgee: uber pyro > flamin

@Realmjumper: Agreed. I was somewhat skeptical about Capcom's recnt statement of supporting the PC, but it's awesome how well they're coming through on it. Hopefully the PC community will respond in kind and show Capcom enogh love to make continued PC development a worthwhile endeavor.

@Leanid: Good question. I would like to say it's just Bleszinski's fault, but Mark Rain runs the damn company. If he truly wanted Gears 2 to come to the PC, he could tell Cliffy to go pout and stomp elsewhere.

    stupid_mcgee: uber pyro > flaming hunter ([k])

  • Leanid

@Gitarooman: Yuck, motion blur. I never understood the appeal for motion blur. It just hides shoddy work like bloom does. I rather not take the performance hit.

    Leanid

  • Leanid

@LisetteAcestes: Run the benchmark and find out?

    Leanid

  • Leanid

@Realmjumper: Why is the console developer treating us so much better than the developer who made a name for themselves on PC?

    Leanid

  • MrKlorox

@jp182: Agreed. Your CPU and RAM are good but your card seems to be holding you back. How much are you looking to spend? 150 or so?

    MrKlorox

  • homernoy

@jp182: I have to say the frame rate being low is your video card. They are so cheap right now, get the best you can afford and you should be set with pretty much every PC game, and they will shame the console versions. Well, at least the PS3 versions, I don't have an xbox. Wii/PS3/PC for me.

    homernoy

  • MrKlorox

@homernoy: Yeah, but the fundamentalism of some PC gamers make themselves out to be just as bad. I say people should enjoy playing what they can afford to play. Sadly I should have saved the money I spent on the Wii out of NES nostalgia for a PS3 instead, and MS should have fixed my 360 (the disc drive failed, not RROD) instead of forcing me to buy another. Now I'm just waiting for the inevitable PS3 holiday price drop. I've got to catch up on the metal gear saga, kill a few zones, and rain heavily.

Might I recommend BF 1943. It's no PC Battlefield but it's by far the best value available on the console download services.

    MrKlorox

  • LisetteAcestes

im using a E8200 C2D processor, with 4gb DDR2 ram, XFX 9600GT 512mb. What framerate will i be expecting to get if i were to p lay on 1360*768 (Sony Bravia 32S400A) ?

    LisetteAcestes

  • homernoy

@MrKlorox: Dude, I am right there with you. I don't know how I got a star. I have really pushed the limit's unintentionally, but.......no worries. I am a person with a PS3 (two actually) that are used by my wife for Blu-ray playback, and I play exclusives, but that's about it.

I am a diehard PC gamer. I don't see that changing soon, even with the console only mouth breathers declaring PC gaming is dead. God! Every time a console is released, it's the same fucking thing.

    homernoy

  • MrKlorox

@homernoy: I don't recommend that, I'm generally quite an asshole. But thanks for the notion.

    MrKlorox

  • jp182

@jp182: here's how I did. if you can't see my screenshot for whatever reason this is my current setup:

    AMD X3 720
    4GB DDR3
    Nvidia 8600 GT

with the settings at High for everything except the shadows which were at Medium and the resolution at 1920 x 1080

    Windows XP
    Variable - 22.1
    Fixed - 20.2

I also ran it in Windows 7 for shits and giggles

    Variable - 21.9
    Fixed - 21.9

and that's using DX9. I tried DX10 but it was about 3 fps slower.

The funny thing is that while the variable (which is actual gameplay) was 22 fps on average it would spike into the 30's depending on what was going on. I already planned on getting a new videocard next month but maybe I'll wait until around the time this game comes out as it works fine for what I need it to do for now.

  • homernoy

@MrKlorox: You are now followed ;/)

    homernoy

  • MrKlorox

@homernoy: Mine finally downloaded and installed and it turns out the SSAA doesn't work right now. I'll bet it's because the game/demo is new and a real profile hasn't been created for it yet. At the moment we don't know what SLI or AA compatibility flags to set.

    Only tried DX10.

It doesn't really seem necessary though. There's not a lot of small thin lines or textures with transparency (like last-gen PC tree foliage). Example here: http://www.nhancer.com/help/AASamples.htm

    MrKlorox

  • homernoy

    @Realmjumper: I agree 100%.

    homernoy

  • Realmjumper

Thank you Capcom for continuing to provide us with great PC games. If only Epic Games were to do the same.

    Realmjumper

  • homernoy

@MrKlorox: This is not Crysis or GTAIV here. We are talking headroom of 10-20fps, not 1 or 2. I can't see how nHancer enabling one setting would set you back to where the game would be unplayable. It runs like a racehorse. Fantastic.

    homernoy

  • jp182

@homernoy: and i would considered your specs to be the latest and greatest. i'll have a screenshot of my own in a minute.

  • MrKlorox

@homernoy: That's a pretty big jump. You sure you used 2x2 SSAA (cannot be enabled in nvidia's tools and therefore requires an advanced third party tool such as nHancer) and not regular old 2x MSAA? I'm not talking about the AA transparency.

    MrKlorox

  • develin

@GrantyD: Ubisoft is the worst company to outsource any game port to. They already messed up any FF game in Europe (yeah they localized it into German just that the texts would have been more understandable if they just kept them in English - even if you don't speak a word of English).

Nothing beats DMC3 though - Gamepad support but they switch the stick for moving to be the right one. How on earth shall I move and press the face buttons with just one thumb?

    develin

  • develin

@Roc-Thul: Any mods you can suggest? I'd be curious as it seems that I got the short end of the stick by buying the european version (which is supposed to have the better detail but not work well with the mouse mods).

  • develin

@HobbaHobba: Well the PS1 and PS2 were on par with the PC. Nowadays people are afraid that they get kicked out of PSN/Live...

@MrKlorox:I couldn't add the screenshot when I edited my above comment. Here is what I got with 2x supersampling Anti-Aliasing. Sorry I forgot to change my settings in my Nvidia control panel to multi-sampling. Still, gives you an idea. Many points went to 130+fps.

    homernoy

  • MrKlorox

@lestat730: Agreed. Getting this kind of 3d tech from a 60 hz monitor leaves you with 30 fps, max. No thanks until 120hz is more common.

    MrKlorox

  • lestat730

Man, I wish Nvidia's 3D glasses + the cost of a compatible monitor wasn't so damn high...

  • Gitarooman

my old E6600 and 8800 GT score a 47 fps average at 1080p 2X AA in DX10. DX10 performance is better than DX9 btw. Motion blur and AA also looks better.

    MrKlorox

  • homernoy

@jp182:You can see my system specs in the screen. By looking at the benchmark results, you could easily run this thing with 2x AA or non at all, with all/most settings maxed with an 8800gt. Only a guess of course, but I have it completely, absolutely maxed, and there was not one frame drop noticable to the human eye the entire benchmark.

    homernoy

  • jp182

    @homernoy: what's considered modern?

  • MrKlorox

@homernoy: How does it run with 2x2 SSAA (enabled via nhancer or similar program) compared to 16x MSAA? Even low SSAA can look better than high MSAA and often run smoother.

    MrKlorox

  • homernoy

    @homernoy: I guess I should post a screenshot. It looks like it's a bit better than 46fps.

    homernoy

  • Meteoric

Getting 55.1 FPS with a Phenom II X3 720 @ 3.2Ghz, and a highly overclocked GTX 260 with all settings maxed and AA (except motion blur, I turned that off).
It looks great. And what I found interesting is that the game play benchmark is dynamic which was a nice surprise if you just want to watch 2 bots kill things randomly. :P

    Meteoric

  • homernoy

I am running the benchmark at around 46fps on all tests. Runs great and I have the benchmark maxed @ 1920 x 1200, 16 times supersample AntiAliasing. Looks and plays great on a modern PC.

  • simplyPARTICLE

@mfwahwah: My opinion might not be to popular in this case but I think that the series started going downhill with re4. Re4 was amazing, but as an action adventure title and not as a survival horror as the previous games were. re4 wasn't bad, not at all, but it was the begining of the resident evil games being tailed to a western action oriented audience with many of the fear inducing techniques, such as awkward controls, being lost. Re 5 was just a step to far and even though as an action title and coop experience it was alright, especialy for those who didn't know the series well, for previous fans it wad disappointing.

  • Poul Wrist

@WittyUserName: if you look at prices you'd see a new computer capable of running all games on max settings and do so for quite a while is available at about the launchprice of the PS3...

    Poul Wrist

  • Neko_Tech

@Paradox me: DMC4 wasn't bad, the controller support was iffy (unless you use XB360 controller-urgg) it either didn't work or worked but no vibration. I really hate the GFWL because usually it only handles xinput (XB360 controller) instead of dinput (logitec & most other USB type that has been standard for years), which I don't see why they can't have both instead of porting the API from XB360.

Lost Planet I have it on Steam but hey guess what it isn't supported anymore since they re-released it as LP- Colony Edition.

Sure Capcom has gotten better with PC but you know, shouldn't they have the done that in the first place? Also look how long it takes them to even bring it to the PC which IMO have no excuse to take that long. I've ended up renting RE5 3 months after it came out and beat it.

Other smaller games like Age of Booty and Bionic Commando Rearmed I've would've got it for the PC but I didn't like how its required to have limited installs so I got it for the PS3. I have no problem with limited installs if it was easy to manage my activation like the PS3 does, (although you either activate it all or not at all kinda bugs me) but on the PC they don't offer a deactivation program until either too many people bitch about it or they release it way after when nobody cares to play it (for the people who've been waiting gets fed up and ends up playing something else). Sure they sometimes deactivate the activation limit but unless your really paying attention to it you wouldn't know.

So I got to know for the people who bought the retail PC version of SF IV (not steam/Direct Download/Impulse/Gamers Gate) is it using SecuRom 7.x where it use online activation or is it like Fallout 3 where it does a simple dvd check (I know the recent patch no longer uses DVD anymore, I was using that as a example when it was first released).

Bastards, when did they announce they were getting costumes and an improved Mercenaries mode? D:

Ah well, neither are that big of a deal. I'll oogle the costumes over the internet, and I can't see how much you could improve on Mercenaries, unless they add more levels (which I would rage about). Mercenaries was already great on PS3/360.

@WittyUserName: A new gaming computer isn't much, and they have more options for long term upgrading than consoles do.

Last week I built a computer for $400 that runs everything on the market at 60 frames per second or more. With this RE5 benchmark I averaged 90.

Prowl around newegg and look for deals and you'll have all the parts you need cheap and quick.

@omgwtflolbbqbye: I sure think capcom has turned a new leaf. In fact their ports lately seem to run smoother then console counterparts(please refer to DMC4 and Streetfighter 4). I wouldn't even call them ports either because they are definately finely tuned for the pc. I would say the same about lost planet and the upcoming lost planet 2(not out yet) but I haven't played the first.

  • Paradox me

@omgwtflolbbqbye: Capcom has done a great job lately, Devil May Cry 4, Lost Planet, Street Fighter IV and Resident Evil 5 all run great on mid-range PCs
Also, RE4's PC port wasn't handled by Capcom themselves, you can thank outsourcing for that monstrosity.

@Narishma: It doesn't matter if it's retail or not. The fact is that the publisher can't tell MS to not put limited activation to play online or any services that uses (update, ect) GFWL. I believe Relic (Dawn of War - Warhammer series) was surprised about the activation and they were told it's the policy of GFWL.

The only thing that piss me off with SecuRom (and other that is close to it) is their crappy online activation (if the game has it). Standard CD/DVD checks I don't care really, as long it no longer messes up with the computer outside of gaming.

The newer SecuRom (only the disk check, I don't buy online activation anymore so I wouldn't know) so far I haven't seen or experienced degrade of performance in my computer outside of gaming.
