Suda Plays Waaaayyyy Too Much Burnout Paradise
You may know Goichi Suda as Suda51. Or the guy who came up with Killer 7, and No More Heroes. But you may not know that he’s also a complete Burnout Paradise fiend. An addict.
Alex Ward, head of Burnout developers Criterion, has said “Suda-51 came here for the day a few weeks ago. He’s a hardcore Burnout fan. I checked the servers – over 700hrs play.”
700 hours? Hey, Suda: get back to work!

@Hellicus: He probably gotz a tricked out Skyline. ^_^
@DariaHalonian: You play video games for over 7 hours a day while running your own business and maintaining "a happy life?" Does this life include anything but video gaming and business running? 0.o I just don't see it, sorry. You must be exaggerating.
Are you a vampire? Do you not need food or sleep? Ah, I think I've figured you out. :)
@xXOMLETTEBURNINGXx: Amen to that. A game developer who doesn't game is like a writer who doesn't read. Or a DJ who doesn't dance.
Cray-Z5200
@Nobuyuki: and Dave Matthews (get it).
mdo7
I just got the game yesterday at game stop for $16. so far I love it.
Lee Gonzales
if he's like me he leaves it running a lot with the car just idling, I love it have it on so you can just jump in for a few events without having to go through the laborious start-up
deathly
@xXOMLETTEBURNINGXx: If you make games and don't play games, you're doing it wrong. That said...I'm not that surprised.
ILikeToLevelUp
@GDW1017: Heck yes! It's so much fun to just cruise around, especially with Big Surf Island.
Speaking of podcasts, Criterion's Crash TV podcast is pretty sweet. They do a lot of really neat behind-the-scenes stuff in it, and their Surrey accents are fun to listen to. Check it out on iTunes.
...if you make someone a big enough fan, you can get them to sound like an advertisement.
Andrew Testerman
@MixMaster81: I still have to unlock lots of cars on mine...I wont pay for it either.
starwind-hawking
@Combichristoffersen: I did the same, then purchased the game on a whim. I assure you the demo doesn't do it justice. In fact, it was a terrible demo, one of the worst I've played.
@Strider Kojiro: Michael Forever!: Ryan Radiohead
how can someone play burnout for that long
hardcore fan huh
@mcrproductions: The online is practically half of the game. Online Marked Man FTW XD
MixMaster81
If there's one thing that I don't understand, then it's what has he been doing in this game? Just AFKing? I haven't played this game very efficiently when it comes to the online part & I've completed everything in single player, including every single DLC released & I haven't reached 150 hours yet (and I'm really sick of the game now). So either this is fake or he's REALLY bad at this game, tbh. Or perhaps his entire staff uses the same account.
@Brodka: All gamers are in school. Anyone with a job has no time for play. Go to work, come home, do chores, sleep, go to work. Stupid adults.
FunkyMunxy
@catsoup: 360, apparently
@Strider Kojiro: Michael Forever!: Kevin Koldplay. Gold.
I log 50+ hours every week on Steam alone and I have time to run my own business and live a happy life... 700 hours isn't extreme considering it was released January 2008. That's 12,5 hours played every week, on average. I know plenty of people who have played more than 12,5 hours of World of Warcraft each week, and they're all employed.
DariaHalonian
@Nobuyuki: Insane different personalities recklessly driving all over the place having badass names like Kevin Koldplay? Sign me up.
@Brodka: Yeah, WTF? Everyone needs to play.
mcrproductions
@Blah8: I could see it being possible...but I got sick of Paradise City after roughly twenty hours...but I never really did get into the online play.
mcrproductions
@ph15h: *evil laugh*:
Project S was done 13 years ago. Where have you been.
Danved
pretty awesome to see the constant suda love on kotaku. amazing games
Jad35
@xXOMLETTEBURNINGXx:
I don't see why every developer shouldn't also be a gamer. Hell, I was told by developers that if you're looking to get hired in the industry, you better be playing a lot of games - not having enough time to play due to school or work isn't an answer they want to hear; you need to make time.
That said, 700 hours is a bit ridiculous. I mean, I put 130 into FFX, and that's an RPG - this is just a racing game with a lot of extra content and online play.
Blah8
@Silentkiller2774: No doubt...
Now the question is: which system does he play it on?
catsoup
@orijimi: I really hate going down the "OMG IT'S BECAUSE OF THIS OBSCURE DETAIL" path, but.. there was a reason NMH's 'world' was so bland.
@Jeff Zhao: I recited those lyrics with the Grateful Dead in mind, it really worked out well.
afrosheen
This is one of the few games I've bought DLC for. If only I could get my damn BlueTooth to work correctly.
@orijimi: I thought the driving mechanics would've been fine if I wasn't driving down a featureless dead maze of boredom.
If they'd just put everything right next to the motel it would've been fine really.
@emwurst: I have 399 of 400 smashes and I even know the area where it is. On Crackdown I think I have all but 2 orbs I gave up that completely even though I've had turtle beaches for a while now.
Annie Are You OK? Are You OK Annie?
@Maxyboy13: I'm sure it's too late for that...he was probably in on the dev beta. ^_^
@JoBo: Are you telling us you cannot somehow find the time to play games and also keep a job?
I do.
You seem to be suggesting that all gamers are unemployed.
Brodka
@Maxyboy13: I've got nearly that much playtime on COD4. It's almost 26 days on that one. I was addicted hardcore at one point.
turbofreak
@JoBo: All work and no play would probably make Suda's games coherent.
KenogaBrave
I don't believe it, I call BS. 700 hours on one game is impossible unless it's an mmorpg.
mellowspaz
@AnonymousNoob: Toyota prius.. you know, 'cuz he's all indy and stuff...
Holy crap, Suda! That's more than the 500+hrs I logged in for FFXII.
Get back to work man, I want more Grasshopper games!
I love ya Suda51 but I don't care for Burnout.
No go finish up development of NMH 2!
Killer7
Downloaded the Burnout Paradise demo, played it, didn't like it at all :( It felt like playing NFS Most Wanted, only NFS MW was actually good.
Combichristoffersen
Wonder if he wants to play the Natal version? heheh
@CyOps: Yeah, I'd be really interested in seeing what car he drives.
AnonymousNoob
man, i wonder how many english-competent employees he tangles up in his addiction by asking them to dredge through gamefaqs forums and translate pertinent information?
@DefHamster: i never play it sober. it's the ultimate get drunk and yell obscenities at the tv with a friend game.
@cupajoe38: That'd be an interesting question for any developer ... I bet Sid Mier or Miyamoto would log the most - maybe Suda 51 for the least since he plays sooo much Burnout Paradise.
Gortexfogg
I played CSS over 3000 hours, does that count?
@leviathan.in.pieces: For a period of time, I had 2 gates and 2 billboards somewhere in the city. I didn't know what to do.
Then I went to burnount.ea.com, typed in my PSN name, and was presented with a map and list of everything I hadn't found.
I'm not normally one to cheat, but this was almost as bad as the last couple of agility orbs I've yet to find in Crackdown. And those... I'll never find them.
emwurst
OK uhh I think that is just ridiculous to spend THAT much of your time on a video game. Even after the game being out for a year. Thats just crazy. Altogether I have played Burnout Paradise for about 50 hours since I bought it in late April last year. I have never put anywhere near 100 hours into a game before. Even though I love gaming and play video games almost everyday. Well... I've put 65 hours into the KZ2 multiplayer... But I don't play that near as often anymore.
@Arkhaiz: I played it while I was drunk once, good stuff.
@JoBo: I find this really weird considering how poorly the open world driving mechanics were implemented in No More Heroes. Hopefully, they've taken a hint from Paradise. Although, Paradise isn't the greatest example. Midnight Club 3 is.
orijimi
@Pornosaur: Hit start and check your stats? :P
@Jeff Zhao: Kyuss. That's all this needs to be about.
orijimi
Indeed... I downloaded it months ago on PSN. It just sat there cause it didn't click with me for a while.
Then one day last week I started playing, some random cool shit happened, and I've been hooked ever since. 46% completion so far, all expans bought.
I'm a loadin', loadin' my war machine
I'm contributing to the system, the break down scheme
I'm a shuttin' down, I'm shuttin' down your greed for green
I am here to gun it down, I gotta do
Kyuss is awesome.
Also, Burnout Paradise.
Jeff Zhao
@leviathan.in.pieces: Laugh at that, I think I have 3 lone bastard gates left to find. One of my friends go the achievement a few months ago, he's never been right sense.
700 hours, does seem like a lot I suppose, I wonder where I'm at, seeing as doesn't it log you into the servers automatically when playing?
Pornosaur
Lol I just got Paradise yesterday. I must say, I can definitely see myself investing some time into the game, though perhaps not 700 hours worth...
Ah, a man by my own heart.
I love Burnout Paradise so much, best racer ever in my opinion!
I've already played through the game to technical completion (doing all the offline stuff), so I'll just get on the game and do nothing but joyride and either listen to the delicious choice of music for the in-game soundtrack or my podcasts. Heck, if ya want to concentrate on a podcast but not twiddle your thumbs doing nothing there isn't anything better to play than Burnout Paradise.
Ahhhhh... good times!
GDW1017
Hey Suda, could you please go work on that PS3 title instead of playing Burnout? You can play burnout as long as you want after you are finished.
Speaking of that PS3 project, is it multiplat or PS3 exclusive? Wiki says multiplat, but it's wiki.
@JoBo: when he's not working
@All the ladies love Mister Jack!: Damn penises ruining out kotaku.
Wonder what his driving rig looks like. Can you see if you can get a pic of it for us? Pretty Please!
That's about 29 days of playtime. 29 DAYS! They better not let him download big Surf Island.
Maxyboy13
Nolan said it best...
damn i thought i put alot of hours into zelda: twilight princess.
bableebooblah-new and improved.
I wonder how much time he logs into his own game?
They should get him to do the scenario for the next Burnout game. That would be fantastic.
Nobuyuki
burnout paradise is one of those games that i can see myself getting drunk to and sleeping at while playing. It's calming and satisfying to be able to just let go and drive through the city. Though i do wish you could stop at a drive through and have real food given to you through the tv. It's good.
Arkhaiz
I wonder if he plays it while wearing luchador masks...
@leviathan.in.pieces: With 700 hours of gameplay? I would never be able to sleep at night.
Liptons
i thought i had a lot with 200hrs... =(
700 hours? no wonder NMH2 and Project S isn't done yet.
That's a bit nuts.
And I bet somewhere in Suda's Paradise City there is part of a yellow gate left annoyingly standing.
Where does he have the time to log in 700 hours into a game when he should be...I dunno, MAKING GAMES?!?! You know, his JOB.
JoBo
I see no problem with this. Love that game!
Bwahaha I love Suda. He walks the line of being a developer and a gamer at the same time. The Mans brilliance.
That's a hell of a lot of penis snapshots. Google would probably be easier.
