Team Fortress 2 Recreated In Pen And Paper RPG
Back before there was computer and video gaming, there was table top gaming. You make use of what you have — pencil and paper. That’s exactly what one reader did when he couldn’t access TF2.
Both were stuck at their grandmother’s house all day long, both itching to play Team Fortress 2. But his grandmother’s house doesn’t have internet or television!
“So, we decided to use our imaginations for once, and along with my brother,” explains Steam user [TPG] Wade Wilson, “we decided to kinda go with the flow and create our own Team Fortress 2 RPG- Dungeons and Dragons style.”
Wilson acted as dungeon master, and the game they created must have been enjoyable enough to warrant play when they got back home — AKA the land of internet and television.
“We played for around 8 hours when we had to go back home,” he adds, “and I decided to stay over my cousins house and actually try to develop a full fledged game.”
It’s still in beta testing, and they’re working out the kinks, but so far, so good says Wilson.

@Amoveo: Spies are the new grues.
Sqeetschy
@tex1ntux:
Well, they obviously thought it was less fun as well, which is exactly why they spent 8 hours playing it instead of those more fun games...
>_>

@Coquiton: Ba dum tish.
This is awesome. Wondering if my local ST/DM/whatever he wants to call himself would run this.
@Deadshot is a spy!: Or a pen and paper RPG.
Ha, I played with [TGP]Wade Wilson a couple of times. We airblasted a uber Heavy and Medic into the water.
syrantking
@yhalothar: I know of at least one: Duke Nukem Forever.
:P
Coquiton
@Eulogy: I'm going to assume you've never played TF2.
Why do people think anything involving TF2 is universally awesome? I find this pretty daft.
DUDE DEADPOOL MADE A TF2 RPG? AWESOME!
BananaKid
@Giggers: You enter the second fort, there are 3 sentries, you die.
You enter the basin of bad water, a spy backstabs you, you die.
Amoveo
I just hope there are no griefers ...

@yhalothar: If I had come up with this idea while home, none of this would exist as I would be too busy playing TF2.
Meh, I'd rather play a modified version of the board game "FRAG" over this. Don't get me wrong, like the idea, but the way you can customize not only the board, weapons, and LoS rules, but also screw with things like "Internet Connections" and "Wall Hacks," I always had more of a blast playing this game than anything else.

@-MasterDex-:
I looked up the Lone Wolf ones and there was the exact same character sheet I remember. Now if I can only remember which one I had.
ElMuerte
@Ecks: I was thinking more along the lines of the Lone Wolf books. Loved those as a kid.
.....and now I realise that I've always been a nerd.
-MasterDex-
@tex1ntux: hey! D&D was always fun to play! until someone loses the character sheets and we have to spend 3 hours re-rolling.
burgerk1ng
This thing would not have been created if the actual computer game was available. Makes you wonder how many cool ideas never get realized because people say "meh, maybe later, for now let's just play some TF2/WoW/etc.", and never get around to it.
yhalothar
@Furious_Liver: Great example of where the kritz excels. It's practically made for soldiers and demomen. Nothing beats down a sentry camp faster than a demoman with kritz.
-MasterDex-
@Furious_Liver: damn! just seconds earlier.
@Furious_Liver: That does make sense, I'll switch them around. I'm totally open to advice as a ton of room for improvement remains.
Never thought something I did would end up on Kotaku.
By the way, Photoshop hates me.
@IntegralDarkness: No, it's a steam username. It's Deadpool's real name.
@+ Watch video
@tex1ntux: less fun? is that even in the form of a coherent sentence.
anyway i use too play table top all the time and still play tf2 so this look awesome to me.
FUCKING CASUALS hahahahhaahahha
Zombeek Dragmire
@Giggers: Agreed, damned combat medics, think they own the place. And that 33%+ Ubercharge makes the slower attack time definitely worth it. Now the Kritz does indeed suck. Temporary invincibility >>>>>> Temporary Critical Hits
SuperZombieMonkey
I think the design looks really good. The rules themselves may need a little work, a little simplification could go a long way. And the stat generation could use a less random distribution.
Jay Randall
@fnool: he has a split personality, obviously...
Ecks
@hot_heart: or there's the MacHall rage quit "RISK edition".
Yell "BLITZKRIEG!" and throw yourself on the table.
@ElMuerte: Those would be Fighting Fantasy books, by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone (at first), I remember buying them as they came out back then, I had the first 25 or so.

Ecks
@tex1ntux: Well, I once found myself playing Advance Wars 2 on a GBA emulator and having a lot of fun, even though I had fine games such as L4D, TF2, Bioshock and GTAIV installed...
It happens. If it's fun, good graphics aren't really the priority.
@Furious_Liver: I could've sworn the spy was faster than sniper, then again I have a crappy internet connection and can only play the PS3 version (Laptop too underpowered but I have bought the orange box).
@IntegralDarkness: I see what you're getting at. I raised an eyebrow, too.
@ElMuerte: You just reminded me of the Choose-Your-Own Adventure books starring the Mario Bros. Oh, how I wish I took better care of those books during the great move of '97. :(
@VenomIreland: Nah, Spy and Sniper both have the same running speed (100%, normal). Although the Sniper has a few things he can do to slow himself down. But yes, they definitely should not get speed reductions. Defense reduction for the Spy would make sense, as he's quite fragile once he's spotted. Perhaps a Luck reduction for the Sniper, as his Primary weapons aren't known to crit by luck but rather by skill (although thats debatable for some Huntsman users...).
"Both were stuck at their grandmother's house all day long" - Both? Both what? Sometimes I suspect you guys think proofreading is for women and babies.
@Cimmerian76: I thought this was a clever interpretation of the Sniper's Jarate. Sadly it was not.
@Exor: I know, Spy is actually slightly faster IIRC than sniper and sniper is average.
@Giggers: Kritz doesn't suck, get it on a heavy, soldier or maybe demo when enemies are really concentrated, for instance when they are capping, and its epic.
JellyDoodle91
I remember this old book I had as a kid, basically it was a choose your own adventure but it had a whole RPG thing going. They had the established character and you could choose a weapon or 2 and random roll some stats. Anyone else remember books like these? I'd love to find some again.
ElMuerte
@Giggers: I would assume you roll up an opposing team to play against, or similar.
Sniper, Spy AND Soldier are all SPD -5?
Soldier is nearly as slow as heavy! geez.
Exor
@Giggers: Yeah the ubersaw is awesome. A medic/medic combo armed with the ubersaw is unstoppable....until they're stopped.
-MasterDex-
@IntegralDarkness: The [TPG] thing before his name suggests that it's just his Steam username or however those things work.
My kind of activity: to invent pen-and-paper when you cannot access your favorite game. I like these fellows who invented this! :D
elmorepow
@hot_heart: Magic the Scattering?
@spannu: That is brilliant. I also see a tie in with Bawls. + 100 to "Twitch".
@Cimmerian76: Do you also have the ability to play music over your mic at 8kbps compression and full volume in order to reduce your opponent's concentration by 50?
spannu
It's probably a lot more fun to rage quit in this version. SLAM! And little cards go flying everywhere.
@stikkbomber: That game is GOLD.
First, paint the miniatures extremely well. Then, every player is given a penlight to look around, and the DM has night-vision goggles.
Zezibesh
@Cimmerian76: Alas, my friends list for these sorts of things is relatively anemic. My gaming mentality hasn't really aged well with the times. The only multiplayer I've ever really enjoyed was with my friends right there next to me, or physically alone with something relaxing, like Endless Ocean.
I guess I look at video games as a purely single player experience, with tabletop RPGs and boardgames as my multiplayer experiences. :)
@Cimmerian76: It should be noted that as an oldskool D&D nerd, I do totally love the concept.
@Strangelove: You just confused the shit out of me, you're being sarcastic right?
Comban
@Strangelove: Apparently you've never seen a medic team armed with ubersaws. When done right they are near unstoppable.
Kritz still sucks, though
Giggers
@eclipsegryph: I actually have pretty good luck finding respectful people online. In most games I can mute the morons, and I can always invite from my friends list.
Heh, now this would be the only way that I could play a multiplayer game. Hell, I vastly prefer the pen and paper World of Warcraft game over the video game.
I guess I just really need other people to be with me when I play, in order to have fun. I've never been a big fan of hooking up with random people and hoping I meet with polite or respectful ones.
I'm still pissed my big unlocks as a medic are the Kritzkreig and the Ubersaw.
Curious what the "enemies" would end up being. The Heavy would be fun to roleplay, at least.
KEEP CRYING, BABY!
Giggers
I shall now recreate my typical online experience. "I deploy a spray of my penis" Temporary +10 to the "Dick Moves" skill. "I shoot your spray in the peehole" Bonus removed.
@tex1ntux: That's always how things have worked.
@tex1ntux: God people can be bitter can't they...
Wade Wilson? Real name?
@tex1ntux: ^%$# word fail. This is what I get for staying up until 7am.
tex1ntux
Hey if it worked for the Doom Board Game...
Quite Intuitive.
I wish them the best of luck.
So instead of playing TF2, I can now play a less fun game instead?
