The 46-Foot Tall Paper Gundam Float
We’ve all seen the giant Gundam statue erected in Odaiba. It’s impressive! We’re impressed. Know what else is impressive? This paper Gundam float at the Tachi Neputa Festival.
It’s nearly 46-feet tall and illuminated. To put things in perspective the 1/1 scale Gundam statue is 59-feet tall. See? Impressive!
YouTuber RoninDave provides a nice introduction as well as talking about his experiences playing Gundam arcade games.

@Kingbob387:
everyone get inside, it has the power of steam (and head turning, eye sparking action)
@pandafresh:
actually Seed was a sort of retelling of the original Gundam series... just with more Scifi elements. But I do agree, UC Mobile Suits have more realistic features, so there isn't an episode with some new Godly Model which ruins the series. (although sometimes I wish they'd release a Wing/X/G/Seed/00 game like all the one year war/target in sight games) We only get to play in those mobile suits in Gundam Musou and Gundam Vs. Gundam. (or Battle Assault, if you go that far back)
@XDarkzeroX:
psst... they're nerds, they get their japanese culture from anime. don't tell them to go to japan, they already give the US a bad name (although, the US already has a bad name internationally). (like the guy in the video)
@Kingbob387: I was literally just about to post this. I agree it's Japan's secret weapon.
Rutty
Hm, I think it actually works!!! It's japan's secret ultimate weapon of doom!
Kingbob387
@pandafresh: G was a love letter to the Super Robot Genre. Seed was just to get girls interested. Same with 00 going by the character designers and writers.
Black-Dog-Howls
that's pretty fukin cool that they have so much passion for something animated.

@ADM86: I want 2 of them. Give me Deathscythe and Wing Zero
@Riktor: in my sexy opinion, the UC gundams are the only ones worth watching, besides Turn-A Gundam, which is kinda UC. Gundam Wing/X/G/Seed/00 just seem like standard generic animes with gundams to me.
pandafresh
@online.chaos: There was no crash in Hawaii in 1999 though...
Black-Dog-Howls
@Black-Dog-Howls: I'm still waiting for 2015 (I think that the correct year) for the Valkyries.
Go Macross!!!!

@PedroTsuba: If that's what you think about Japanese culture then you obviously don't know Japanese culture. Try going to Japan and visit famous landmarks and temples before you start sprouting non-sense.
XDarkzeroX
@NitrousO: No, the Japanese military restriction clause in the surrender after WW2 goes kaput in 2010. Meaning in 2010 Japan could technically build up a military.
Black-Dog-Howls
@NitrousO:
Nearly all Gundams use projectile or high energy weapons. Melee is generally backup.
Also, we'd all die of old by the time the Mechwarrior actually got anywhere. They're all invariably slow and clunky.
cowondinosaur
@NitrousO:
MechWarriors are a more logical approach to mobile combat weapons.
we have so many types of anti tank piercing weapons, I don't think "Gundanian" armor or some kind of "Gundam" OS would save you from getting easily destroyed.
@PedroTsuba:
You're thinking of the Japanese culture we get imported into the States. (the same Japanese culture that made that guy go to Japan to be a "Samurai")
@Curse_Lily:
HAHAHAHAHAHA, actually, there is a mini statue of liberty, maybe 1km away from that Gundam. NO JOKE... damn, who has the picture of the Statue of Liberty with the Gundam in the background.
@Arisato-kun:
not to go all...ummm... nerdy on you, but the Seed suits are way more Scifi than the original Gundam suits (sure it's all SciFi) but I think you'd have to stick with a Gouf, which needs to be respected (it's pretty bad ass in any Gundam game if used properly). damn that sounded nerdy.
sure Gundam is awesome, but I don't need to hear some guy narrate his experience/lack of experience with Gundam.
especially a guy who thinks he's a Samurai. (and most likely has a backpack with a poster inside to go with his Glasses, hat and "stylish" goatee)
@PedroTsuba: Jealous? I am.
Nani kore?

@Black-Dog-Howls: 2012. wake up.
THEMISSING
Gotta finish that 1/60 RX-78-2 plamo...
@Black-Dog-Howls: I for one welcome our new Japanese overlords. If I'm piloting any suit at least give me a Gouf Ignited please.
Arisato-kun
Someone needs to build a Mechwarrior float that blows that one up with its rail gun. They could even have the gundam float swing its sword at the projectile as its destroyed for comedic value :D
NitrousO
I hate the fact that japanese culture is made of cartoon characters
@Black-Dog-Howls: You mean 2012 right? :P
NitrousO
@Curse_Lily: Statue of Liberty aint afraid of no ghosts.
Black-Dog-Howls
@ADM86: THIS HAND OF MINE...!
I want to see it tapdance like he says!
Wolfgang Wozniak
@stalin23: aaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnddddd... it's working now.
stalin23
@Firelance: I used to be functional but after a horrific accident involving riding a unicorn into an elevator I have become completely paralysed from the neck down.
Riding the unicorn was surprisingly deadly. Most think of unicorns as friendly and peaceful when really they are mighty warfaring steeds, especially with that deadly razor sharp horn.
The main problem I had getting it into the elevator was being knocked off upon entering the open elevator at full gallop as I was far too high when placed on its back.
After falling backwards it kicked and I was sent flying straight into the wall.
I know type to everyone on Kotaku of my various experiences in hope to aid them in avoiding such fates as mine, while also prompting deep philosophical thoughts in them with my stunning yet simplistic questions.
The method in which I type is a highly classified military experiment involving electrodes and the such attached to my mind. I think you would find I look eerily similar to that borg lady in one of the star trek movies with Patrick Stewart.
Minus the exposed robotic breasts of course.
I think any wish for full sized deadly mechs would be like riding a unicorn at full gallop into an elevator.
Do you find jumpsuits to be eerily striking?
pardon me for what is coming.
I CAN'T PLAY ANY OF THE YOUTUBE VIDS ON THIS SITE ARGH!!!!!! IT WAS WORKING YESTERDAY!!
stalin23
@ADM86: Make one yourself! In fact, I think that should be a Kotaku contest. Make your own Gundam contest. I don't even want any swag, it'd just be neat to see all the entries.
@Black-Dog-Howls: if they build a real gundam i and totally signing up as a pilot cause i am a new type! i mean wait what.
i seen ghost busters, statue of liberty is a gundam inside -.-
chickdigger802
@Curse_Lily: Pfft, all she needs is a beam saber and she's good to go!
@Black-Dog-Howls: I'll join them if they let me pilot an Ez8 instead of a RX-79[G]
OR NO DEAL >:[
@Firelance: If thats what you mean by functional, I'm confident gravity can make your wish come true!
MDevonB
@Black-Dog-Howls: As long as I don't have to fight a Zaku in a Ball, I'm prepared for that.
MDevonB
Before i head to work i'll say this
RX-78-2 > statue of liberty
AWESOME \(^O^)ï¼
Wow. Impressive. The man-hours used just to skin that thing.
I want one.
Esper mind tricks
Crossbone Gundam. All black. Misfits skulls. Cranking Wu-Tang. In Space.
A Gundam unit made from paper and 46 feet tall... Amazing! Such craftsmanship.
RONIN013
Now make a functional one.
Functional as in deadly.
Firelance
I knew it! They're Mass Producing these things in preparation for 2010. God, Japan must be working with the US ready to roll these things out.
Amuro?
Amuro?
Are you Amuro?
Gah, we'll have newtype examinations at the doctor now and be drafted to pilot. 08th MS Team is a reality.
Nuclear Missiles North Korea? You'll have hundreds of mobile suits dropping in from the sky with high energy laser rifles and missile pods on you.
Black-Dog-Howls
wow...I want it.
