Those were new IP's they were experimenting with targeted at western audiences. Monster Hunter is a MASSIVE franchise in Japan now though so they want to make sure they can get it into the hands of as many Japanese people as possible. Which means targeting the console with the highest install base.

Considering I just started playing Monster Hunter Freedom Unite and it's my first MH game I think I'm hooked already. So yeah definite purchase for me. Shame that it's going to take a while to get over here. I just hope there's still gunlances.

Anyone got an idea what's happening at 1:25? I think the guy's wielding a thunder-element Slash Axe in sword mode - is that some kind of chainsaw attack, or an element attack, or what? It looks like the monster's in a taunt animation, so I doubt it's a monster attack.
Could it be a new system to replace the "weapon bounce" when the monster's hide is too tough? Maybe you need to mash the button to cut through it... hmm.

Man, I wish this was still coming to PS3, because it really looks like something I'd want to play... I would save up for a Wii, but then I'd have to miss out on buying new PS3 games, and I gots ta have my Batman and Bioshock2 and God of War 3 and finally get Dead Space and all that other crap. Also, Wii online gaming is generally inferior to PC online gaming circa 1997, which is just sad, really. And those gorgeous graphics could have been even more gorgeous.

I'm not a Wii hater or an opposing fanboy, but am i the only one who see this and can't believe it's a wii title? I kinda feel like this is a ps3 version and we're being baited and awaiting the switch.

@Error_404: 360 never had a chance for this game. Capcom is based in Japan and thus would choose one of the consoles that are popular there.

I have to agree that I wish this was coming to PS3 instead so I can sell my wii and never look back. The only thing that bothers me are the friend codes. I don't want to have to deal with friend codes with this game and Wii speak is a joke. Why couldn't nintendo also give us the option to use usb headsets with the wii?

With MH3, NMH2, Crystal Bearers and Other M, looks like there just might be some hope for the wii, but why do we have to wait so damn long?!!

@phor11: An awful lot of that trailer is gameplay. Pretty much everything that isn't obvious CGI, as Nekojin said.

Considering that a lot of Wii games look no better than Gamecube games it's pretty obvious many developers aren't even trying. It's a system for casual gamers, who may not know any better, and people who declared that graphics didn't matter when it's power was compared to the 360/PS3. I think a lot of developers latched onto those facts and figured they could get away with doing half assed games on the system.

If parts of that are actual game play, then I have a newfound respect for Capcom, and a newfound disdain for a couple other developers that can't seem to even come close to that level of detail in a Wii title.

@Skitch: Motion controls may not be necessary, but using the analog stick to aim the gun weapon instead of IR was a bone-headed oversight on their part. IR lends itself extremely well to aiming.

@Zolbrod: If Monster Hunter 3 is taking elements from the Latest PSP game, then soloing won't be bad at all. It's not as interesting as playing with 4 people, but it's still fun, and scaled appropriately. 4-player co-op is where the game really shines, though.

@Kafeen: Instead of motion controls, they settled for multiple control schemes. From what I've heard and seen, there's Remote and Nunchuck, then there's 2 configurations for the classic control: PS2 configuration (using the right analog for attacks), and the PSP configuration (using the face buttons for attacks)
Which means that motion controls are worthless, because veteran players would clearly love using the classic control more than using waggle controls. This is especially true because Monster Hunter is pretty much making you use every button on the controller all the time. You don't want to be flailing your arms about while trying to dodge, adjust the camera, and flip through your items, now do you?

The fact this was originally planned for the PS3 and switched to the Wii is news from like 2 years ago. Franchise fans already either got over that or moved on to better things. This will be an amazing game since monster hunter was never about graphics but absolutely amazing gameplay. I am counting the days for this to hit North America.

Right, because EVERY game on the Wii NEEDS motion controls, even if the game doesn't make logical sense to have motion controls added. That's a great idea!

That's just like, say, forcing every PS3 game to have sixaxis controls, or forcing every DS game to have touch screen controls (and yes, there are games that don't use them), because what's the point of putting a game on a platform if you aren't exploiting every feature of the platform. :P

As for this one, I agree that having an easier to manage friend list would be nice for this sort of game, but otherwise so long as the online functionality is the same as previous MH franchises, 'proper' online is simply what is needed for the game to function in its own right online.

@Zolbrod: Fun enough that the PSP games have all been number 1 on the GameFAQs boards since they came out. Monster Hunter Freedom was there until Freedom 2 came out, and that only lost the spot for a couple months when Crisis Core and Dissidia came out, then took it back. Now Unite is there.

It's not uncommon for me to see people talk about their 500+ hour games.

@Zolbrod: Probably not that fun, since the game's difficulty can be very unforgiving. Some will find it fun for the challenge of trying to solo everything. I'm not sure how much you like losing repeatedly until you finally figure out a way to take down a big monster.

I can't wait for this. Slash axe is something I can't wait to try, and all the new attacks, definitely be great. I'm not too thrilled with the new monsters yet, they still look like the same old monsters with different skins.
Still playing Frontier though, and having fun trying to kill Akura Jebia...
