Tron Legacy Lightcycle Teaser Still Amazing

Disney teased its Tron sequel at last year’s Comic-Con, but the blurry cam footage that sneaked out didn’t show just how well the video game world’s graphics had improved over the past 27 years.

Fortunately for Tron geeks and Jeff Bridges fans, Disney has released the Tron Legacy (nee TR2N) test footage, making us hungry for the eventual video game adaptation. Of course, given the nature of video games based on movies, previous Tron game attempts and the rumoured developer of Tron Legacy, we’ll keep those expectations throttled behind lightcycle speeds.

Downloadable high definition trailers at the movie’s teaser site.

    @GoonerVance: No I'd say one was blue and the other was yellow. Green is a no show.

  • Skunky

    @GoonerVance: I'm waiting for a puce cycle.

  • Skunky

    @PeytonFeargal: you're forgetting, it's been twenty something years since the first Tron, computers can do way more complex calculations so it makes sense than light cycles can now curve and not simply go in 90 degree angles.

    @Knoxximus ver. 5.66: As a child, I was always afraide of powerlines because they reminded me of those crazy hovering robot things from the Tron movie.

    The graphics have not "improved". There are just more polygons and effects. The original Tron visual style was cool because it was playful about the gulf between 8 bit graphics and real life. When the lightcycles turned 90 degrees in an instant and exploded in a geometricaly perfect starburst we were impressed because it was a really fun and original riff on computer logic.

    In a world where video games are approaching photo-realism the whole premise that made Tron great just isn't there any more. Why are the physics of the bikes fluid but the colours still flat and neon? The original Tron made much more sense and had the edge of being something we'd never seen before. Although this new style looks cool it also looks very familiar (like the Matrix mixed with that Shania Twain video) and won't linger long in the public's mind.

  • CrimzinD

    @CrimzinD: Maybe people are referring to the other character, the one in yellow. I hadn't considered that, because while I think the blue rider is very near the line between blue/green, the other one is clearly yellow.

  • Kuren

    @Wavewash:
    Have you even WATCHED Tron? That music video you posted was obviously borrowing elements from Tron.

  • Kuren

    @Xelioth:
    Well, it's interesting. In the original movie, when the Light Cycles were on the game grid, only then did they extrude the light trail walls. When they left the game grid, they no longer left the trails behind. After the destruction of the Master Control program, the network systems were assumed freed and you assume that there were no longer the "games" that conscripted programs to filter out the best code so that Master Control could assimilate. However, in the Tron Legacy trailer, there is an implication that there are games still, but they're no longer on rails.

    @Knoxximus ver. 5.66: I cant really say I was only on set for 2 days. The set i was on had like I said 2 different versions of flynns one was an old borded up version of it and then the other was on a street corner inside tron. They had to build the set in the middle of a field because no studios could fit a whole block of inside Tron. They also were doing filming of the 3 main actors in either a car or a ship. I saw a bunch of the raw footage of the same sceene for llike 45 minuites. Got kinda repeditive hearing Jeff bridges say "where did you learn that move" over and over and over. There were a bunch of people running around that were dressed like obiwon konobi. And also a bunch of people dressed all in black with some black helmets.

  • mariospants

    @Mlong128ir: agreed!

  • mariospants

    Color me old fashioned, but the video (hi res version now available at flynnlives.com or something like that) didn't really all that impress me. I liked the slightly elongated faces in the masks, which was different, but the rest looked pretty much par for the course nowadays. There was something about the original that was so... unique. That uniqueness seems lost in this one. Maybe it was the combination of efficiency in design: low # of vertices but extremely high resolution curves and lines... anyway, they could have toned down some of the wastefullness of the design. After all, creating vistas in 3D is difficult, translating them isn't.

    @Chris Memering: ...saying the "HD era" like that makes you sound incredibly dumb, it would look better due to the insane leaps and bounds by which computers, and thus computer graphics, have taken in the past almost 30 years. "HD" has jack crap to do with anything.

    Loved Tron2.0 the PC game and really excited to see this movie. This trailer reminds me of the video for Verbal by Amon Tobin who incidentally made the music for Spinter Cell: Chaos Theory.

  • Xelioth

    @Fernando Jorge: agreed. a little too dark, and I gotta say: I much prefer the on-rails version of the light cycles rather than the free-flowing one. would make the game much harder. this curvy nonsense is just boring to watch.

  • Nexus6

    @Shiryu: Nice video editing and wicked tune. Much props.

  • MCWHAMMER

    Anyone know which came first... Tron or Snake Game?

  • Fernando Jorge

    @Mlong128ir: Yeah, in my head Tron doesn't look that dark and edgy. This dark and edgy thing is getting so generic.

    Fernando Jorge

  • Mikolai

    This is my first time watching a high quality video of this trailer. Upon watching it, I noticed something... The green guy, did he look and sound like Kevin Flynn (possibly his program, Clu) or was that just me?

    Maybe that's why he knew Kevin Flynn was up there, because he's connected to his user, after all?

    I also wonder if it has any connections to the Tron 2.0 game, maybe mentioning Alan and Jetthro Bradley?

    Also, I noticed that system programs tend to be red and regular programs to be blue. Green programs, however, were corrupted programs in Tron 2.0. So either the green program in the trailer is Flynn's corrupted program, or the movie has it's own direction and made green programs as users or some such.

    @That mop mutant from NES.: I have never played Tron 2.0 but seeing a walkthrough I really want to know. I stuck to GLtron, that game was awesome especially at max speed and max map size, that was some crazy stuff boxing in my opponents.

  • Kalapusa

    @ahasler10092: Shut the fuck up, Donny!

  • UlvaBarlow

    @MonaAdmetus: I believe he was referring to the act of driving lightcycles around in an attempt to make the other guy smash into your trail.

  • Jmontilla2786

    @MonaAdmetus: The lightspeed race thing was a game remember.....that reminds me I need to go see Tron again....

  • ahasler10092

    Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not "Mr. Lebowski". You're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing.

    @NitrousO: 1920 X 1080

  • Jmontilla2786

    @Blizniak: U need to get your eyes checked....

    @That mop mutant from NES.: Oh yes please. I loved Tron 2.0 and still go back and play it every year or two. Hopefully the new game will be at least as good as that.

    Alvarez

  • MonaAdmetus

    The only real issue I'm having here is the fact that they say, "This is just a game!", "...Not anymore."

    The world in which Tron was set was never actually inside a video game: it was inside a computer. Did the things they did inside the computer resemble video games? Yes, but they weren't inside a game.

    MonaAdmetus

  • Mentuss

    @NitrousO: The video isn't 16:9, so you get little borders at the top and bottom.

  • Showmeyomoves!

    @rogue32: I don't know what kind of sense that makes in this context, but any Iron Man reference gets a thumbs-up from me.

    Tron is definitely something that could benefit from the HD era. You could do a really cool style with it these days, like the video just showed...

    @Joghobs: Keep them guessing, I always say. ;)

  • That mop mutant from NES.

    Just make a proper upgrade to Tron 2.0 and we are all fucking set.

    Yes, I am cautiously optimistic about this movie since remakes have been so great the past few years.

  • Knoxximus ver. 5.66

    @whitecarrot: Are there a lot of homages is the film? Older set pieces other than Flynn's Arcade? Like maybe the laser that broke Flynn up in the first place? Is Boxlietner gonna have a cameo?

  • MasterOmega

    yeah right, "unnamed Studios" is developing the new game...which means it's going to completely fucking suck nuts

    (could comment on which studio it is...but they would throw a fit because they're on their last leg anyways)

  • Joghobs

    @a-xxv: Well which is it?
    The best you've ever seen? Or the best you've seen in years

    You can't have your cake and eat it too.

  • Mlong128ir

    I don't really care for the new look, I prefer the old. The art direction in this one looks like it could be from a commercial for Windows 7 with a variation of the Windows Aero glass theme.

  • Knoxximus ver. 5.66

    O. M. G. O_O

    Took 'em long enough. I absolutely ADORE Tron. I can NOT wait for THIS!

    I especially love how they got Bridges on board for it...makes it all worthwhile. Hopefully Bruce Boxlietner (sp?) isn't too busy either...GOTTA have the title character in there somewhere...

    But yeah...those light cycles....wow...it's like night and day. Like, 64-bit and 128-bit.

  • Grahamunculus

    There is a heaven and it is bountiful!

    @Orionsaint: 1080p is 1920x1200. Not 1920x800. Or at least I thats what I recall.

    I was working on set for this movie in Vancouver. Some of the sets were amazing the floors and walls all lit up in neon. Im curiouse to know what Flynns is because they had 2 sets with it one was an old run down building the other was an exact replica but on a street corner of tron. I also got to see some of the fotage of the movie in 3d. The whole film is being done in 3d so it will be very worth while to see in the theater. Olivia Wilde looked hot in her black wig and letherish light up costume.

  • Shiryu

    This makes me want to go make more TRON tribute trakcs, like this old classic of mine, "TRONic". Waiting for this and the new "Dune" movie is gonna drive me crazy...

  • Orionsaint

    You haven't lived until you watched in 1920x800 on HDTV in 1080p. It looks sick!

  • RRRansom

    You have to screw up pretty badly to make a bad Tron game. Just make the games that the writers already designed for you. Not too difficult.

  • fearing

    @Sweetz: Yeah, that's what I thought when I read this article. I never actually got to play Tron 2.0, but I heard nothing but good things about it. Hmm, go fig.

    "previous Tron game attempts"

    I'm not sure about the 80s arcade games, but Tron 2.0 by Monolith was and still is effing brilliant. Anyone who says otherwise is a tasteless git ;)

    I'm hyped for this beyond belief. Despite it's cheesiness, Tron (the movie) is still one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time. Every time I watch it I feel the same sense of wonder I got when I saw it as a child.

    I know of tron, I don't think I have seen the movie. However that footage looked very interesting! those are some pretty ways to use colors! So is this a game or a movie? ( I know its kotaku but..)
