TurboGrafx-16 (PC Engine) On The Japanese PSN

As a long-time European PC Engine player, I pray the gods of Kaguya we won't be restricted to the pathetic TurboGrafx library.

I hope that for NA Sony can get some of those old arcade games on the PSN. For instance, The Simpsons (4 player beat em up) would be a great download for a couple of bucks.

It's also reported that these PCE games will be playable on the PSP as well....

@Tzion: Interesting insight. I wonder if it is just a simple licensing issue. Where as even though the PS2 games are obviously on a Sony platform, perhaps there is more involved with re-releasing them or porting them to the PS3/PSP.

Hudson seems to have said in this case, "We are willing to give you everything you need to release these old titles at your own discretion and your own pace, lets just agree on the price. Sign here!"

I really hope this hits North America. The TG16 was my first introduction into complex JRPGs beyond the North American iteration of Nintendo's "Popular sellers". I later moved onto the NEC Turbo Duo which was the PC-Engine "Super CD" based system that sported many Anime "Cinema" based RPGs. The Super CD Based RPGs were just a pleasure to play. I spent an entire summer, Japanese Dictionary in hand trying to beat Tenshi No Uta II, CAL 1-3 and The Macross SRPG. The basic NEC library had some fantastic games as well. Y's, Fantasy Land, Dragon Warrior, Bomberman, Gunhed (Blazing Lasers), Chase HQ, etc etc.

I would love to see this hit PSN. I can hear the background music of Keith Courage in Alpha Zone just thinking about it.

@Billkwando bought his tickets for Hyde's US tour: Yep. Good thing Hudson mapped the turbos set to the max setting to the x and y buttons (SNES config) for VC release. I'm sure they have done the same for the PSN releases.

@Vishus: I think the price point is simply to harmonize it with the price PCE games sell for on the Virtual Console. Yes, it's high relative to what many PSOne Classics sell for, but Nintendo already established the price.

My only hope is, if they make it over here, they don't put them up to the $8 price point PCE games sell on the US VC.

@Hardcore: I believe they have sold... on the Wii. On Virtual Console, last I checked, the number of games for the TurboGrafx-16 is second only to the NES. If they weren't selling, I doubt Hudson would have invested so much in putting them on the machine. I mean, I know it probably doesn't cost much to transfer them to the Wii's VC, but they do have to pay someone.

@Tzion: the problem with ps2 games on the psn is that not all ps3 support ps2 backward compatibility. and there is also the problem of the size. a 4gig download is alot of bandwith especialy if you give the ability to users to delete and download it as often as they want.
I would really love to see it happen if they make all ps3 able to emulate ps2 but then I look at how long its taking them to upload ps1 games and I think we would only have 10-15 biggest ps2 games up after 2yrs.

I'm glad Sony is making an effort of putting older games on PSN.Hope,they put up some Neo-Geo games and maybe some Neo-Geo color games for the PSP.

A friend sold me his copy of CS for $10. True story.

If they put Dragon Slayer:Legend of Heroes on there I would be very happy. That or Vasteel.

@Strider-No.9: I remember we used to swap sysems with friends sometimes. Trade the Genesis for some TG-16 action. I liked Keith's Courage in Alpha Zone, I still remember the sound effects when he swung the sword..

The TG-16 reminded me of the Master system with thse little cards the games were on.

That game was such a demented mix of cute & threatening.

The thing about Bonk is that its game mechanics were created with the assumption that you'd be playing with turbo controller, since the TG16 had turbo built in. Thumbs would get tired very quickly trying to "Bonk-fly" across the screen. People who've played Bonk will know what I mean.

@Vishus: Well, your statement seems misguided for two reasons. First, consumers view value more from what they are willing to pay than what they believe production costs were. Second, people already pay these prices on the Wii, so the price point is proven.

I too love that they are bringing more classic games. Competition may actually decrease some of the prices, or even induce some upgrades to the game (which I don't need, but I don't mind as long as the original version is playable). I probably won't buy any classic games on the PS3 unless they are exclusive and truly great, though, as I like to have my classic games in one place (isn't that half the point of the Wii's VC, anyway).

I think it's a really smart move and that the Japanese public will pay the price. The PC Engine was much more popular there than the TurboGrafx-16 was here. I would think there are a lot of people who owned PC Engines that now own PS3's and would like to play those old games again. And not just for nostalgia. Some of those games were really very good. I would say that they would buy them for the same reason they would buy new games: they're fun.

@RicoTheSaboteur: Crossed Sword, eh? Gonna look that up now. I don't remember it at all. I didn't really think that The Super Spy was what dansyndrome was looking for, but it was the only first person perspective game on the Neo-Geo that I could remember.

@rich8606: Well, the only reason I know of those games is that I've owned a TG-16 for years. They aren't the most popular games, though they are good. They're probably more popular in Japan.

If they release in the US, maybe they would include some Bonk games. Most people are at least familiar with those, and they are good enough to actually justify a $6.40 purchase.

I cant see these being too successful costing so much. Especially considering how easy they are to emulate on just about any system, like say for instance a CFW'd PSP or a PC.
No intelligent person is going to want to fork over excessive amounts of cash for games that they know cost damn near $0 to port and distribute; even less so when you consider that the main reason that they probably want to play it is simply out of nostalgia, meaning that they most likely already paid for a license of the game at some point and will have no qualms about pirating them.

I'm not familiar with those games.

Sega should take note and emulate games on the PS3 that aren't possible on the Wii, like Dreamcast titles.

I can't wait for these games to not come to the west because SCEJ's PSN-team consist of people who have no idea that there exists a place that is not Japan.

I wonder whether they'll put the Parodius games, as well as the TG16 version of Wonder Boy the Dragon's Trap.

OMG ! My first console ! Yes, bring on Tengai Makyou 2, my first RPG too ! I know that's on PS2 already but didn't get that version, got the GC version instead, and don't want the DS or PSP handheld version. Super Star Soldier would be nice too. Good news :)

Either way you should be grateful that the TG16 games are coming to the PSN at all I mean the TG had some great games. And PS3 fanboys should be happy that they are releasing the games on a "real" console instead of the Wii (god I've spent like 300$ on my virtual console for the Wii lol.)

Funny that they should add TurboGrafx-16 games before PS2 games. I mean, sure it's easier, but you'd think they might want to support Sony before Hudson.
