Want To Peak Inside Smash Bros. Creator’s New Office?

Earlier this year, Nintendo announced it was joining forces with Smash Bros. designer Masahiro Sakurai’s Sora Ltd. to found a new company, Project Sora.

Nintendo is the principal investor, owning up to 72 percent of the company.

The company is hard at work at a game, but it’s not another Smash Bros. title. Sakurai added, “I can promise an experience that’s different from anything [you've played] up until now.”

Project Sora’s website gives a straightforward tour of its new office in a brand new building, located in Tokyo’s Iidabashi. The purpose of the site is primarily to attract new talent, but it does give a peak behind the curtain: there are game consoles, desks, a video conferencing to communicate with Nintendo, computers running 3D Maya software and a cactus.

About that new game, the site says, “It’s a secret! It’s totally a secret!!”

    @Anemone:
thankyou for showing me that. you just brought tears to my eyes.

  • RaviC

If Nintendo owns 72% of the company then why do they have that white PS3 and an Xbox 360 there?

    RaviC

  • Paul Soth

    @Boom-Chicka-Ah:

You should of seen what Ion Storm did with all that Edios money.

  • CosmosGoddess

    I see a XBOX360..

    CosmosGoddess

  • Danved

HRAP? Am I expected to believe Sakurai actually plays fighting games? That either makes Brawl much more confusing, or explains it perfectly.

  • hazelnut - RIP Michael Jackson

Arcade sticks. Brand new fighting game experience?

  • hazelnut - RIP Michael Jackson

@Malfunktion v2: Probably a Dev Kit thing. But still, very awesome looking white.

  • kagebutsu

That's a pretty impressive setup they have.

  • Solidusian Fury

By the look of the gaming setup there, which includes quite a few arcade sticks, I wouldn't at all be surprised if this game is competitive.

I was a competitive Melee player and have won countless tournaments. Hundreds of dollars while I was in college. I tried to get into brawl and couldn't. I love it as a party game and it is in my wii almost constantly non the less, it is well crafted and if you look at the other games Sora has worked on you know the talent is there.

Let us remember that the softening of Brawl may very well have been heavily pushed by Nintendo, rather than the majority of the development team. Anyway, I switched over to BlazBlue as my competitive game of choice....but I have alot to learn, that game is not smash brothers.

  • Anemone

@Boom-Chicka-Ah: If you're impressed by that, you should check out Level 5's offices. They have more geek-cred than gencon. http://www.level5.co.jp/creator/navigator.html

  • culic

Didn't expect to see Xboxs and PS3s honestly. Nintendo is so weird about that stuff sometimes.

    culic

  • IanC

Oh my word... its like a history of gaming under that TV!

  • brainboy77

@Boom-Chicka-Ah: I'm assuming they just moved in. Just wait another 6 months.

    brainboy77

  • brainboy77

@Timothy Saskiewicz: And a 360, for all you fanboys out there!

    brainboy77

  • DarkFestim

@Superhacker75mil: Well either way this is just bad news for me. When brawl came out I redefined Insomniac. Now this. I hope to dear God that it isn't a competitive game otherwise I may die...
Who the hell am I kidding. BRING IT!

  • gencid

It's nice to see that they are playing on competing consoles as well, and that they're not afraid to show it. Sometimes you get the feeling that Nintendo is completely oblivious to anything that its competitors are doing, hardware or software wise. Plus that HDTV gives me hopes that Wii's successor would support HD resolutions (yes, you never know with Nintendo).

  • Clave

@Boom-Chicka-Ah: Wow, good thing i'm not the only one who though it

  • Clave

@Showmeyomoves!: I'd kill for a "Now and then" photo series of how the office looked like when it was new and after the release of their first game using this offices

  • Clave

Ok, this new commment system is getting on my nerves

  • Mii

Wow, that's the tamest game developer office I've ever seen.

    Mii

  • SinisterUrge13

    Hey look, an office.

    SinisterUrge13

  • Realmjumper

Small office due to the region it's located in. If it where somewhere like Montreal the desks would be seperated. Check out Eidosmontreal.com to see what having nice big office space looks like :P. Also looking at the projector room /sad panda face.

    Realmjumper

  • kenshin643

cool lots of consoles for them to play. i have faith they can make a good game.

    kenshin643

  • xblacknightxz

wow they have a lot more space then the square enix guys

    xblacknightxz

  • paradox

Well, I hope whatever he's working on it's not another fighting game. Brawl was a huge disappointment, and such a step down from Melee.

The Kirby games are always great though.

    paradox

  • Mr. F

yeah.... but is this all for the wii? then it doesnt matter, unless they come with an console add on

  • Superhacker75mil

As much flak as Brawl gets from the competitive community (including me) for how it was purposely undermined as a competitive possibility, it was still a tremendously fun, pretty, and well-made game.

Assuming they aren't working on a competitive genre of gaming, I can't wait to see what these guys have in store for us.

  • laencythe

@Naraht: well, I don't see how anyone could come to that conclusion, how about the studio being owned by Nintendo?

    laencythe

  • Malfunktion v2

@Timothy Saskiewicz: That's the exact thing my eyes were first drawn to. Oh Sony, how you mock me so... You'll give a white PS3 to even Nintendo before you offer one to me!

  • FearfulInsomniac

Do I see a PS3 and an XBOX360 in the office? That's slightly humorous. *Might be something Sega in the top left of that TV stand?*

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm REALLY looking forward to this. Not because its the Smash Bros. guy, or because its a new Nintendo company, but BECAUSE THEY PROMISE SOMETHING NEW! Yeah... oddly enough... I'm not being sarcastic about that. Totally looking forward to whatever they shell out, here's to hoping it's a new RPG franchise for Nintendo! Or not.

  • MAConcep00

Arcade sticks at Nintendo, Maya 3D software.....good GOD, are they making another Killer Instinct?!

I'm sure a lot of people would be excited to hear that, but I sure as hell ain't.

  • kakx

Brawl sucks dick. ): let down, BETTER NOT LET ME DOWN SAKURAI!

  • Piccoroz

@MonsterKingRen: You cant be serius? they have a N64 and Snes runin in the office, you cant label that as boredom.

  • Showmeyomoves!

@Showmeyomoves!: Wow, same comment, only I was 2 minutes late apparently. Boy, now I look like a copy-cat douche.

    Showmeyomoves!

  • CaptainMurphy

@N●Gage Croal: That's what counts buddy.

  • CaptainMurphy

Nice to see a 360 in there.

  • RRRansom

It look like they took the pictures just before everyone's first day at work. It is not a developer's desk without at least three miniatures.

  • Showmeyomoves!

@Boom-Chicka-Ah: That's cause it's brand new. Wait till they've worked there for a few months and the deadlines start drawing near.

    Showmeyomoves!

  • MonsterKingRen

@N●Gage Croal: At first I was all "welcomed not to talk about it" and then I saw your username

White and blue and light grey are also the colors I associate with boredom, these offices need more yellow and orange.

    MonsterKingRen

  • fearing

@Boom-Chicka-Ah: That's cause it's new. Give it a few years of guys sweating over thier computers and eating junk food and see how it looks.

Does look quite nice now though.

  • Timothy Saskiewicz

do i see a white ps3 in that picture?????

    Timothy Saskiewicz

  • Save me

@N●Gage Croal: Both black and white are HRAP3s.

  • RevengaSweet

    Gotta say... nice cactus!

  • Nathangelion013

It looks like brain surgery could be performed anywhere in this office. Well, save the cactus of course. But Jeezum Crow that is an immaculate set of rooms.

    Nathangelion013

  • superberg

Is it... a secret to everybody?

  • cyberrat101

Clean and sterile, while having arcade sticks with all possible gaming platforms. Talk about an oxymoron.

  • Boom-Chicka-Ah

wow this is the nicest, cleanest development office i have ever seen.

  • Jogfrog

I'd love to see a feature like this of different studios, sort of like the one from a while back of different peoples offices.

    Jogfrog

  • Horrid DCD

Nice, it's everything I expect a game developer's office to be.

  • Whiternoise

Awesome offices, certainly looks like a bright place to work. Though on balance, i prefer Bethesda Softworks' offices, it looked a lot more, well, fun. The above looks a bit clinical.

    PS: peek, not peak :)

    Whiternoise

  • fnool

That you said "peak" twice, completely without irony, would imply it's not a typo. Oh dear.

  • stalin23

@N●Gage Croal: The black one, IIRC, is HORI Real Arcade Pro Stick 3.

Now, does this mean Project Sora employees get to play Blazblue and SF IV?

    stalin23

  • jayteemo

    did you perhaps mean "peek"?

  • Naraht

Before people get bent out of shape over the PS3 & XBox 360, most game studios keep all the consoles on hand, both for recreation & research, and it shouldn't be taken to mean that we're getting a smash clone on 360/PS3 etc.

  • N●Gage Croal

    @stalin23:
Yes, I believe so. At least I know the one with the black top is. The ones with the silver top have a bit of a different layout than Hori's sticks... So, I dunno.

  • Austin Kruckmeyer

It's so tidy. But casual is the way to go.

    Austin Kruckmeyer

  • N●Gage Croal

    @Evdor:
I can say the American company I work for really makes me feel welcomed there. :)
    (can't say where, though...)

  • yoshinatsu

Heh, they have all consoles :)

  • Lozmaster

    @Lozmaster:
Eww link broke thanks to the comment system and it won't let me edit it.

  • KingSeafoam

Reminds me of a certain level in Perfect Dark. If I were them, I'd model the security cameras to look like Laptop Guns. ^.^

  • MellowJade

You know I think this new game will just have something to do with the sky. Since Sora in Japanese means "Sky". Maybe a game about flying?

  • Evdor

@Ichidou: That doesn't strike me as unusual so much as very Japanese. To say 'positive work environments are a lot more important there' might be a bit of a misnomer (no two companies are alike, after all), but the feel of the environment--and the image you present to potential customers and partners, is an important part of it, and what little experience I had back in the days I was an office jockey saw a similar attitude, so it sort of matches my anecdotal observations, at least.

I'm not saying it's strictly a Japanese thing, but sufficed to say, the difference in an office environment in Japan and your average American corporate office is pretty well documented. (God, I remember the training videos we had to suffer through that ended with an expectant middle-manager being like 'See! Be positive and work can be fun!' Like saying it loudly was all it took. NOT THAT I'M BITTER).

    Evdor

  • stalin23

Ohhh.. arcade sticks. Those are Horis right?

    stalin23

  • Ichidou

I've always got this sort of arrogant "Hey kids! we're a super happy corporation!" vibe from Sakurai and everything he represents in written form. These photos add to that particular image.

That being said, GOD I wish I worked there :(

    Ichidou

  • gn2007

woah one of the pictures has a white ps3 thats pretty sweet to see :) haha and im jealous i wish i had an office liek that :D

  • Perfec7

"I can promise an experience that's different from anything [you've played] up until now."

    Finally, a masturbation simulator!

  • Jogfrog

@RaviC: They have these things called games on then, apparently people enjoy playing them.
