People would rather buy the cheaper PSP, DS, Wii or even one of the cheaper XBox 360 packs than pay the current PS3 price tag -- especially when the stores stock considerably less games for the PS3 than any other system.

If a newspaper only put "editorial" in a small font -- smaller than the rest of the fonts on the page, in fact -- at the top-left of the editorials page, yes, it would be an issue. As it stands, they put "Editorial" in large text somewhere on the page or particular article.

(On speaking for most people: You might be surprised, but the topic of reading tags on Kotaku actually came up in discussions at work in the past. My very non-scientific finding is that people don't read them. Your mileage may vary.)

Don't reprimand your readers because you made the title unclear.

Do not rely on tags. Tags are a very small part of an article, and most people never bother with them. Tags are for when you search the article. Not when you see it on the frontpage. I've looked at tags at most a handful times when reading Kotaku.

Images are quite often not directly involved with the article on Kotaku.

And even if we knew for certain that the image belonged to the article, it could've been a japanese list over worldwide sales. It's not impossible for people to believe that.

It took me until I started to read the list until I was sure that it was only counting Japanese sales, due to the lack of mention of that in the article itself, and my first thought was just like the original poster and Babelfish that it should've been made clearer what it was about.

Ugh, the taste level of Japan is absolutely horrible.

@umiman: No worries -- the tag should be in your RSS. That's why for NSFW posts, we always put Maximum Risky or NSFW as the lead tag, because it shows up in an RSS and is physically part of the post title.

It does show the tag, but it's after the title, and if it's a longer title (like the one to this article), then the tag is going to be cut off (along with part of the article's title). Maybe it would be better if the tag preceded the article title in the RSS feed title? I don't know.

@Brian Ashcraft: I read the post. I know Famitsu is a Japanese magazine. I know the list of specific to Japan, even -- and knew it before reading the comments.

It doesn't take much to say "in Japan." It's two words. Hell, it's not like this is a newspaper; you're not worried about taking up too much space on the page, and words are not at a premium, here.

If I'd written a news blurb like this for my college paper, and I'd left out "in Japan," my editor would have reamed me in the ass for it. (Okay, that's way exaggerated; but it wouldn't have made it to publication without having those two words added.)

And, yeah, the tag is there -- but, honestly, most people don't read the tags. Perhaps they should... but they don't. And, remember, you're writing for your audience, not for yourself, which means you ought to do whatever you can to make your writing clearer; ambiguity is always a failing, even if a bit more thought on the part of the reader brings clarity.

(To wit: This is no different from the overuse of pronouns in academic papers. Certainly, a few moments of thought on the part of the reader will reveal the true subject, but it's still bad writing to make your reader think about your syntax rather than your content.)

@All the ladies love Mister Jack!: As Westerners, I assume this is one of those games we are never going to experience like the Japanese, due to cultural differences. Just like they have arcades and we definitely don't, I think Japanese people pretty much all take public transit a lot, so they have some free time to bust out some PSP with other commuters, and the PSP is doing better there (I think?) so you're more likely to run into people playing a MH game there than you would here.

@Foxstar is in love with Kotaku's two Brians.: I dunno, Lllusion might come off as trollish with that comment, but I think it's pretty accurate. The number of Nintendo-exclusive titles in that top 15 seems far greater than you would expect to see in the equivalent North American sales chart.

Let's recap the non-Nintendo games:
-Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G (PSP the Best)
-Ryu Ga Gotoku 3
-Resident Evil 5
-Tales of the World Radiant Mythology 2

The other ELEVEN games are all Nintendo games. So honestly, I think calling Lllusion a troll for that post is totally unwarranted. Not that I know his commenting history, so maybe he is a fanboy, but this time he was right.

@Paradox me: It is a misleading title. Immediately after looking below the title, it's apparent that this is Japan-only. Which makes you look back at the title to see which one is wrong. One of them is, because the title is pretty clearly implying worldwide. The problem isn't in the content, it's clear to me it's about Japan. The problem is - let's say it again - the title is wrong. Read posts before you reply to them.

@SolidOni: Because despite its Japanese success, neither Yakuza 1 or 2 had any success in the US at all, even with limited print runs and great reviews (mostly on 2 there). Simply put, at this point, the US gamers would see a very Japanese game, a 3 in the title and would just walk away because they wouldn't bother to play the other 2 and they're actually kind of important since it's all one big story.

I think there's a few bullet points that, if there, will usually guarantee relatively strong initial sales for a game. Combine that with splitting the games into two distinct categories, hardcore and casual, and then realize that a lot of people buy a lot of games from both categories.
Game sales appear, to me, to be determined by a few factors paramount to anything else:
1. Franchises - Zelda, Biohazard, Monster Hunter, Mario, Pokemon, Ryu Ga Gotoku, etc. All of these have sequels that are selling well.
2. Company Branding - Nintento, Sega, Square, etc. - Popular Japanese game companies with relatively reliable product lines.
3. Conventional Gameplay Mechanics/catchy, addictive, unique casual gameplay - If it's hardcore, then established gameplay conventions reign supreme. If it's casual, then the gameplay tends to be some form of progressive challenge that can hold attention spans (obviously, the goal of pretty much all casual games)
4. Celebrity developers - Miyamoto, Kojima, Matsuura, etc.
A lot of the popular RPG franchises seems to have gameplay that focuses on grinding, while the casual games look to be very still-based.

But still, this is just random, generalized observation - I'm sure someone who actually lives in Japan could provide a better perspective.

@All the ladies love Mister Jack!: C'mon, the game is fun. It just takes some time to both master the weapons and learn the different monster's attack patterns. Its a niche game that captivated a country...which reminds me of another particular game like that (...starcr-).

And you probably can't understand how much better ad-hoc is than infrastructure in a country smaller than most of our states (geographically). I'm sure getting together with other people is much easier there than it is here (this would probably also explain why arcades are still big there...somehow...).

I'd take their top-selling over ours any day, if only because maybe I'd be playing Yakuza 3 and Mario & Luigi 3 right now. Just take out Radiant Mythology 2. Sweet Zombie Jesus that game is really bad compared to literally any other Tales game.

That isn't horrible, but given the immense popularity of the DS in Japan, I'm not surprised that Sony's stuck in second place. The DS outperforms everything in Japan, including the Wii.

@All the ladies love Mister Jack!: The ad-hoc is why it's popular in Japan, where they're into that sort of thing. In America, it's a cult classic for its skill-based gameplay, lack of leveling stats, and intense difficulty (especially solo).

As for the controls, yeah, I can see why you wouldn't like it on the PS2 (the right analog was the attack - one slip of the finger and you just did the wrong one, ouch); but on the PSP it's much better. Even if you don't like the camera (which is a moot point after you learn to control the analog with the middle of your thumb and use the top to hit the camera buttons), it's still an amazing game with hundreds of hours of play.

@RedStar - Workers of The World Unite: Those are some pretty good titles... it is not near as bad as america where wii fit is selling like 1000000000000000000000000000 copies a day and gets like 5 minutes of average gameplay a day.
