Why Golf Is In Wii Sports Resort

Originally, Wii Sports Resort did not include a golf game. But it ended up in Wii Sports Resort only after Miyamoto mistakenly said it would be in the game.

Doh!

Nintendo staffer Takayuki Shimamura recounts the story with a laugh: “Right after getting back to Japan, he suddenly said: “You know we’re including golf now.” Apparently he’d stated in an interview that this time round golf shots would be determined by the backswing, even though at that time a golf game didn’t exist in any shape or form!”

So there you go! Wii Sports Resort golf, courtesy of an interview flub.

To be fair, Golf in the first Wii Sports game played terribly thanks to spotty motion sensors.
I cannot wait to try it again with some 1:1 motion sensing.

Well why not? It does include Wii motion plus ...

  • bduddy

@Airion: I was about to say that. Considering that (I believe, having watched Youtube videos) club and frisbee golf use the same holes, it can't have been that much work to just grab the swinging code from the original. Even frisbee golf would have been pretty easy to make-there have been frisbees in the game for as long as we've been seeing it...

@AChirino: On my part, I love the idea. As good as the Tiger Woods game is, I actually play the golf game in Sports Pak I more than I do the other game. I like the fact that the course is entirely dreamed up and that it's less complicated and flashy. In lieu of them making a game that entirely made up of Nintendo's "own" golf courses, I suppose I'll have to be happy with just one new course.

Also, it goes with the game's "resort area" theme. I mean, how many really good resorts out there do you know of that DON'T have some kind of golf course?

  • headcase

@expansionsss - the jaded gamer: To be fair, your standard Mario Golf is 6 courses, and in the first two games, the average hole was well designed, so much so that IMO it worth having less courses than say, Tiger Woods.

So one can hope they don't piss away that IP with a substandard game.

The question is: if they don't get Camelot on board for a 3rd Mario Golf, what other group of people at Nintendo's disposal could make a good one?

    headcase

  • Dreamwriter

Funny, I read that, and I didn't get that he made a mistake at all. The article says he did that on purpose because he didn't really like Golf in Wii Sports because you have to swing the remote hard rather than taking your entire backswing into account. He announced it to pretty much force the development team to add a fixed golf to the game.

Miyamoto also lied to the dev team a couple times, telling them that Iwata demanded features that Iwata never did. It was no mistake, it's just one of the ways Miyamoto gets what he wants without arguing.

@GriefTroll: Yep, I've played the Japanese version extensively. As well as a dogfighting mode, there's one where you fly over finding points of interest, flagged up by a green 'i' icon. There are eighty to find, and some of them are quite tricky. For every ten you spot, you get something new - firstly balloons start appearing which you can shoot as you're flying, then you get the option to fly around at sundown etc. etc.

It's a shame you can't explore the island on foot in a way, though I imagine from Miyamoto's comments that's possibly going to happen in a future game.

  • themaninthebox

@Foggynotion: sadly George W Bush had the same impression on the government, when he screwed up in a speech saying that the estate tax (aka the "death" tax) would be repealed. That led to Congress creating the law which basically reduced the tax each year until in 2010 when it didn't exist (but would go right back into existence in 2011). So Miyamoto, and W - the unlikeliest of buddies

Funny that these games that are "such high production value" and "take time to make" can be whipped up so quickly by developers.

I imagine it took a few guys a long weekend to fill Miyamoto's promise, hell they probably prepped work for Mario Wii Golf Plus too, just plug and play in the characters and add some goofy stuff to the courses and walah ! Another $50 game that is strangely familiar to the last.

  • Airion

The inclusion of golf is nice, but I've done it before and I don't think it adds much to Wii Sports Resort. The question I have is if the game's frisbee golf is also to thank for this. It would have been a shame not to have frisbee golf.

On the other hand, if frisbee golf was planned anyway, how much work could it have been to import Wii Sports golf with a few little changes, especially if the courses were going to be there for frisbee anyway?

  • InTheGrassAllWineColored

Interesting to note that Miyamoto says Resort was originally planned as a mix of winter sports and marine sports. Wii Winter Sports next, anyone? (Mind you, I guess Mario+Sonic sequel has that covered.)

Also, more talk about the island being used again - perhaps for an adventure game of some sort. Seems like Miyamoto has something in the planning stages at least.

It'd be great if they set Pikmin 3 on WuHu Island. Or made it a secret galaxy in Mario Galaxy 2.

  • wonderboy13

I say good on Nintendo. When game makers make a promise of a game feature, that ought to be delivered in the final product. Far too many games (especially with MMORPGs) don't deliver on promises and advertised features (even game features advertised right on the retail box).
