Why Is There A Tanned Fairy In Dragon Quest IX?
With golden skin and bleached blonde hair, fairy Sandy doesn’t look like your typical Dragon Quest character. She talks and dresses like the Japanese equivalent of a Valley Girl.
Dragon Quest IX producer Ryutaro Ichimura describes a meeting regarding what kind of character would be best for the pivotal role of guide for the adventure. During these discussions, DQ creator Yuji Hori said “I think a ‘gal’ is good.” Hori then chuckled.
“This time around,” explains Hori, “I wanted to see us go with cute. Because of Koakuma Ageha or the ‘gal’-style or whatever, we tried it.” More chuckling.
And viola, we get a tanned fairy girl with bleached blonde hair.

@Zolbrod: Actually no! I was thinking of eating anything orange, like cheetos and such. The Monkey Island similarity is just cake.
@Masterpain22: "I wonder how much different the game will feel when it comes to gameplay and all that."
Dragon Quest hasn't really changed much at all throughout its 20+ year history - that, supposedly, is part of its allure.

@Captain Pretty Good: "We'll surely avoid scurvy if we all eat....an orange"
Please tell me you had this line in the back of your head when you wrote that ;)
I approve greatly of her and always have.
The ganguro style was emulated from a pronstar right?
She's supposed to "guide" casual DQ players to "satisfaction" and hardcore ones to "ejaculation".
I think they are going for Namie Amuro in 2000 rather then Ganguro fashion slave
@Zolbrod: Thanks. Now I'll never look at my avatar the same way again.
Lol, looks like Nicole Nicole Riche.
she actually doesnt have a bad dye job. if you EVER gotten you loser hair done even once in your life, im sure you would know that.
i read egg all the time, so im BEYOND excited to see more girly girls in video games.
@stalin23: GANGURO! GANGURO!
@FarmboyinJapan: Oh... dear jesus. Do they not have mirrors? These poor clowns.
Ganguro right...like Jynx :d
@amake: Oh, you're quite right:
[en.wikipedia.org]
@☆スãƒãƒ¼ã‚¯ ☆: *type, not time, lol.
@amake: Ah, so sort of like "Ko-gal (gyaru)"?
That's a time of gyaru, I believe...
The joke here, which seems to have gone right over Ashcraft's head, is that ageha also refers to a kind of butterfly. This gal-fairy is a visual pun.
lol, if you're gonna make her that tanned SE , why not just make her black.
@FarmboyinJapan: Slightly wrong. The tanned/orange skin with blonde/orange hair is Ganguro. The pictures you linked to are of Yamanba and Manba, EXTREME forms of Ganguro.
Ganguro is a part of the Gyaru culture/fad.
@☆スãƒãƒ¼ã‚¯ ☆:
Gyaru is not the same as Ganguro. Ganguro is a specific subset of gyarus.
So, not that this is mentioned anywhere on the site itself, but apparently in order to be able to comment, I first have to make a bunch of comments that no one will see but the people who enable commenting for people.
So time to spam. (seriously, this is a messed up way to allow people to comment)
@NitroAML: Yes... So much so.
Ganguro in real life are very very scary...
@simply_androoo: Hardly. With all that tanning they do you'll probably die of radiation yourself. Besides, they're burnt to a crisp.

YAY for fake tanner! ha

@ShadowOdin isn't american: Dang! MEGAScurvy's the worst! D:>
@Dragooncancer: that's hot...
@bakagaijin:
Well, from what I understand, a lot of these girls are runaways.
There was a documentary done about them a while back, and while its not 100% accurate, it certainly is entertaining.

@cupajoe38: Ha, I googled Jynx and clicked on the first link. On the page it gave me a description of this, "Jynx's original design, considered to be a racist stereotype of African-Americans."
I had no idea, I seem to remember Jynx with black skin.
@FarmboyinJapan: Gah! That last one looks like a cannibal in a corner feasting on a body! Except, it's holding a shopping bag. Eeeck! Thanks for the great distinction. O.O
@Comatose Turtle: Are you thinking what I'm thinking?? *CLUE: FLASH*
stalin23
@FarmboyinJapan: Thanks, now I"m going to have nightmares tonight.
I bet their parents are so proud.
Damn it, why did you steal the Bratz doll style?
The Swearing Gramps
This is the same fad that Jynx was based off of. But of course that was taken out of context as racism, and now her skin is as purple as Grimace's.
@Captain Pretty Good: They'll make it worse. You'll actually get MEGAScurvy
@FarmboyinJapan: And they both look like freaks of nature. So what's the point?
@simply_androoo: So, if they're orange, will they cure my scurvy?
@LarryFabulous: I wonder if anybody else has Frank Zappa's "Valley Girl" running through their head like i do right now.
@Captain Pretty Good: Check out SuperGALS! on DVD. Funny stuff in there and calling them the Japanese valley girls is a PERFECT description.
LarryFabulous
I think some distinction needs to be made here between "Gals" and "Ganguro"
The links that Bashcraft provided at the beginning of the article are a good example of "Gal" style....
But THIS is "Ganguro"...Which comes from the word "Kao" (face) and "Kuro" (black).

And while "Gal" style has evolved, and is still around today, "Ganguro" style is on its last legs as a fad, and whenever I see one of those poor souls, they look like they are still stuck in 2004.
FarmboyinJapan
@spannu: That's sad. Well, not really, but it's a good reason to legalize cannibalism.
One of many.
The best part of Ganguro-girls is the small part of normal-colored skin around their eyes that just makes them that teeny bit more awkward to look at.
@simply_androoo: Yeah, but in typical Japanese fashion, they go above and beyond the requirements for their newly discovered "culture". They've gone from merely being orange and talking with a speech impediment to looking like some kind of mole people. I love the condescending way Hori refers to them being thrown in the game as an afterthought.
spannu
@simply_androoo: I'm thinking you're right.
@Captain Pretty Good:
I think it might be the Japanese take on America's "stupid spoiled whore" look. That's what I got from that link, at least.
@☆スãƒãƒ¼ã‚¯ ☆: Ah, so they're like Bizarro goth kids.
@Zolbrod: Haha, oh my god, Tidus in drag... That's an awesome image.
I guess this is his version of a Gullwing.
And a girl.
Ganguro FTL...
@NitroAML: That's why I love them so much. The animated versions are adorable, and the real-life versions are hilariously awful. They're the epitome of the difference between fantasy and reality, and it defies all laws of nature.
@☆スãƒãƒ¼ã‚¯ ☆: *believe, not belive.
Curse you, lack of an Edit button.
@Zolbrod: :/
I LOL'd. Good job.
@Zolbrod: I lol'd out loud because my friends display picture on msn is Tidus, right now.
Dope boy hero - on a sabbatical.
@Brian: If you're going to use French, use it well. >.>
It's "Voilà ". All is forgiven though.
Those people are made of chuckles and sunshine. I like `em.
A fairy with golden skin and bleached blond hair?
Nice to see Tidus still has a job ;)
It's staring at me with those big, sparkly eyes...
...and those penciled-in eyebrows.
@Captain Pretty Good: It's short for "Ganguro-gal (or gyaru)", I belive.
They're kind of like Japan's version of "Valley Girls".
God I hate Ganguros.
Dope boy hero - on a sabbatical.
@Comatose Turtle: Animated/Drawn Ganguro girls look way better than those real life atrocities.
@Captain Pretty Good:
It's a slang for "tanned emo" in japan.
Man in the mirror
Did someone say ganguro?!
Hey what's wrong with tanned fairies?
Looks like me on Halloween last year.
Viola?
Well, at least the tanned fairy adds variety to the whole look of the game. I wonder how much different the game will feel when it comes to gameplay and all that.
Masterpain22
@Captain Pretty Good:
Click the links. It's a specific...lifestyle, I guess for Japanese girls.
@Dragooncancer: It's more likely then you think.

GANGURO FAIRY'S... IN MY DRAGON QUEST?!?!
'gal' style? I'm not entirely sure what they mean. Are other girls not also 'gals'? :/
Extending welcoming arms to "The Hills" crowd. That's gotta be it.
