WipEout HD Fury Add-on Drops Next Week

Three new race types, twelve new tracks, thirteen new ships, and six new music tracks are coming to WipEout HD next week, when the Fury add-on pack hits the PlayStation Store.

Thursday, June 23rd is when the WipEout HD Fury pack races onto the PlayStation Network, trailing along tons of new game play in its wake. Eliminator, Zone Battle, and Detonator game modes bring new ways to do battle in the PSN version of the futuristic racing series, while an all-new campaign, new trophies, and new online ranks will keep players driving, and striving, and hugging the turns.

Two days before the pack hits there will be a free update to the game, which will add a new statistics system while tweaking the menu system and adding some enhanced community features.

Basically, the face of WipEout HD changes next week, either a little for free, or a whole lot for $US9.99. Your choice!

    @nrXic:

I do think it's a good deal, however:

-The new ships will be re-made versions of the ones already available

-The tracks will be taken from a previous game, and there will probably only be six actual "new" ones with a reverse mode.

Like I said, I seriously think this is a good deal compared to what we often get for $10, but it isn't exactly all new.

Pure is still the best -

@a-xxv: I have been playing a bit online...

I am actually looking forward to this one.

    @Kaneda:
Sweet, I'll add you. Normal racing is a nice change

  • Kaneda

@destro78: You need to have VERY sharp reflexes to do well in Wipeout. If you're the kind of guy who sees strips of pavement flying by when you close your eyes, Wipeout is the game for you!

  • Kaneda

@Numanoid: I will, too! I'm Vertignasse on PSN. I like to race without weapons once in a while. Hope I'm not the only one!

PS: The list of new trophies is already added to the XMB!

  • Orionsaint

I think you mean July 23rd?

  • Orionsaint

This makes me want a PS3!!!

  • Numanoid

    @Duin:
I jizzed in my pants when I got the trophy for getting to supersonic. One of my best moments in gaming ^_^

  • Numanoid

@a-xxv: I will- I'm not very good at multiplayer but wipEout is one of my fave games this gen.
    My PSN is Game-Sammich_Dan
Goes to anyone else who wants to race too, I suppose

  • RicoTheSaboteur

@Ur-Lord-Crypy: WipEout XL aka WipEout 2097 is as far as I am concerned the best of the serie for a number of reasons (nostalgia being probably one of them). Darker tracks (Gare d'Europa!), touching the sides of the tracks was less punishing (you could make some sparkles without being slowed down), no retarded barrel rolls and side steps (I guess I forgot that one in my beefs earlier), better and more prestigious track list, etc. Some of the UI and designs done by Designers' Republic aged poorly, some stayed neat...

  • ibelli

    Game is too hard.

    ibelli

  • Ur-Lord-Crypy

@excel_excel: How about um.. The rest of the Wipeout games??

lol, Funny, does nooone remember Ps1 anymore?? lol I swear some of you seem to think that Ps2 and Xbox 1 were the start of consoles.

Definitely getting this. The game is basically getting doubled in size for half the price of the original purchase. Wipeout HD is one of my favorite racers this generation and such a huge expansion for such a small price is a steal.

  • romano.cule

I'm really sick of that politics.First they release game who got nothing.6 traks and 5 ships, and then they espect to buy additional content for ten bucks?!Get a life morons,il0 never buy anything from u thiefs!

June 23rd? So it came out almost a month ago? Might wanna fix that.

  • a-xxv

@a-xxv: So, does anyone wanna play? LOL

  • jeembomb

This is how much content the game should have had for $20 total.

  • njd09

@nrXic: Agreed. I'm gonna go play right now.

    njd09

  • Alibyebye Essmob

Oh eff yes!! The game is so damn good, and I've been waiting for what seems like ages for new content.
Sony - keep pumping out new WipeOut content, and I'll keep buying!
    Fellow Kotakuites, please support WipeOut.

  • MSUHitman

@destro78: You're in a good boat to get it as Wipeout is on sale for $15 right now so essentially htis pack will only cost you $5.

I won't be getting this pack as I haven't played it enough to justify getting a new DLC pack for it.

  • Hiroken

    @Duin:

Wipeout has great music, yeah, but HD is still nice enough to provide custom soundtracks-- a great feature when you're memorizing tracks.

  • Hiroken

    @fuchikoma:

Agreed. I'ved been waiting forever for a great Wipeout game, and although the ones between XL and Pulse were okay, HD finally feels just right.

Even though I'm nowhere close to finishing HD, I'll probably still get Fury.

  • Hiroken

    @a-xxv:

Same here! Loved WipeOut back in the day, and still love it today. I remember practicing Silverstream until my thumbs felt like they'd fall off, but getting that gold medal? Worth every second.

  • Rob_Nomad

    POLL:
you play Wipeout with analog stick or digital?

    Rob_Nomad

  • Rob_Nomad

@destro78: it was my first ps3 game (i bought ps3 mainly for blurays). its really good (also considering the price) !

    Rob_Nomad

  • def PD

I was never really a fan of the wipEout series, but HD was fantastic from what I've played of it.

The game is challenging as all hell, and despite my lack of time and dedication playing it, I found it to be worth the $20 I dropped on it, and the expansion/add-on will be no different.

  • aggrostack

  • RicoTheSaboteur

@squidboy007: Every now and then I try to do Airbreaker... I think I reached zone 46 once or twice :/

  • RicoTheSaboteur

@Firemane: I really like the game and recommend it for all PS3 owners with a pulse. That said, I think the game is not flawless and I hope they will tweak it some along with the new UI.

My main beef is the fact the game breaks in phantom mode. At that speed, the geometry of most tracks transform the slightest error or accident into a dive outside the track or a buggy collision that transform all your horizontal speed in vertical speed, leaving you flying in the air for ages.

Racing against the AI set to hard in phantom is also a lottery at best and an exercise in futility at worst. If for some reason, the leader of the race manages to get out of weapon range of those behind him, you will have a pack of ships (yours included) shooting each other, while the first guy escapes untroubled and finishes the race 10 seconds before everyone else...

BUT there is plenty of entertainment and content and awe to have before you hit that wall (and obviously some manage to go past it) and I will, even without fixes for these issues, buy Fury on day 1.

  • nrXic

I haven't given the game the attention and love it deserves, I think this is a good excuse to get back into the game. 12 tracks and 13 ships for $10 is a steal of a deal.

  • Wahrheit

Finally! I have waited so long for new tracks.

I'm gonna squeeze out some additional 30 hours at least from this.

    Wahrheit

  • DeeBG

@Dr. Tobias Funke (analrapist): It's actually on a limited sale right now. 5$ off normal price, that's why I am going to pick it up tonight.

  • DeeBG

@destro78: It's definitely an arcade racer, so don't expect anything along the lines of a GT game, but it's fun and looks great.

  • Fabrice

    @destro78:

AI can be infuriating at times, past that it looks gorgeous, there are tons of things to do, also motion sensing works rather well, Imo best racer on PSN and definitely worth the price point but it's not a simulation.

I'm kinda interested in the new tracks. Does this mean more locations or variations from previous ones?

  • ( shake cows, win a ) Milkshake

    @bornonce:
    I can dig that.

  • Curse_Lily

@Firemane: You will need to know when to airbrakes and sideshift just before a corner, this is were a good knowledge of the tracks comes in handy ^_^

  • Firemane

    @destro78:
Wipeout HD is hard later on in the game. I beleieve there are 5 speeds, and the last one is hard, I can't even finish a race because I blow up all the time.

    Firemane

  • zanzibarlegend

@fuchikoma: getting trophies are definitely not for the faint of heart, thats for sure. i'm happy i got the few that i have lol.

  • domhnall

@destro78: I keep coming back to it. More than any other game I have for PS3. Of all the games I have owned, it is the only one that I can go several weeks without playing and then come back to it again and again.

  • zanzibarlegend

@destro78: catch me on as well. im aero7. :)

    WIIIIIIIPPPPPPEEEEEEEOOOOOOUUUUTTT... HD.

  • domhnall

@PlaidNinja: I did not get into F-Zero at all, but I am WipeOut junkie and have been since the original. I think about WipeOut at work and dream about it when I sleep. I have been in several accidents because I forgot I can't shoot down drivers that are in my way. Seriously though WipeOut HD is the best WipeOut game to come along since XL. And the original price was $19.99. Best 20 bucks I ever spent on a game.

  • squidboy007

Anyone else get the Zone Zeus trophy yet? I can't even look at Anulpha Pass anymore!!

  • destro78

@Curse_Lily: Good luck with the physical. You've been [hearted]. I've jotted down a bunch of the PSN IDs for the people responding to me.
I am so chuffed for the racing games coming Q4 2009! Blur, Dirt 2, GT5 - yes please!

  • haran_elessar

@destro78: It's really an amazing game. I always wondered how they were able to offer the game for just 19.99 to begin with. The whole experience feels so complete you would think you just bought the game for 60 at the store.

But Wipeout has always really been a love or hate thing. I really love the game and is one of my most played games on the PS3 but if you never get used to the way ships handle you'll end up hating the game.

Getting to be a good pilot takes practice but once you do, it's completely worth it. Races are tough but once you finish first, the feeling of reward is unmatched. You'll certainly have a great time playing the game if you get used to the controls.

I also think Burnout is a great game but I'll be buying this first instead of the island. The thing is Burnout is way too easy and while it's fun, I get bored after a while. In that sense you'll get more gamplay with Wipeout since it'll harder to beat it. If you like challenging games you'll enjoy Wipeout a lot.

also I think there is a demo for the game at the store...I recall seeing one while browsing through old demos the other day. Why don't you try that out and then make a choice? If you do, have in mind that as you go up the ranks the game gets way much faster and more enjoyable/challenging.

  • Curse_Lily

@destro78: I'm about to go to the doctor for physical but let just say this ^_^

I love racing games heck i even bought a g25 racing wheel just because of that love but Wipeout HD is unbelievable fun sure i've been playing Wipeout since 98 but there's only a couple of game i love as much as this game

Sure the gameplay is now way near as complicated as GT or Forza(for the fans)but it is challenging is not just go straight and get there first, there's some strategy on when to use your weapons (especially online) you will need to learn the ins and outs of the tracks for you to be able to take advantage of every track(sebenco climb and sol 2 are the best example of this)and don't get me started on the online play ANYTIME you want to play there are people to play with(it seems everyone in the EU is there all the time)

So to end this long speech the game is awesome even more now since $5 cheaper(until the july 23 tho)if you love F-Zero heck if you love racing game you NEED to play this i guaranteed it you'll love it.
    ^_^

    PS. \(^O^)/ WOHOO I CAN'T WAIT!!

  • excel_excel

@PlaidNinja: Well I completely disagree. The music in F-Zero GX was fantastic. And I'm talking about going from F-zero to HD. I didn't care for the other wipeouts at al

  • fuchikoma

    @starwave:
Yep. I've loved the Wipeout series from the beginning. I was disappointed with everything between XL and Pulse, but I really feel like they've got it right again. Wipeout HD is great, and I'm glad I went against my principles paying that much for a download game...

...but I'm not getting Fury, because I am never going to finish HD, it's just impossible. I'm not the high school kid I once was, with dozens of hours a week to practice, and that's clearly what it's made for. It's a great game, but truly impenetrable.

  • destro78

@Duin: Thank you for this. I am sold. Will buy before the sale is over. Many thanks to all for the great feedback. I checked out some videos, and I can't wait to get home. Find me before I find you on PSN: beryllium

  • destro78

@darkos87: I actually saw Motorstorm: Pacific Rift at Wal-Mart (Toronto) for $29.83 CDN. Value pricing!

  • killingdrew

Wipeout HD: Awesome. Cake reference in a Kotaku post: Epic!

    killingdrew

  • darkos87

So for about 20 pounds I got a game with more tracks that motorstorm pacific rift? You gotta be kidding me.

  • adgeman

    Brothers gonna work it out

    adgeman

  • Duin

@destro78: Wipeout is a fantastic series and HD is a wonderful entry in it. It's akin to the speed of F-Zero with some of the combat stylings of Mario Kart. That said, items aren't that frequent, are more straight forward and also require more skill to typically use, and often the best line through a course gravitates to speed strips instead of picking up an item.

For $15, right now, and even at the original price point I felt Wipeout HD was more than worth the money. It's challenging with a great breadth of content, which is only going to improve with Fury, and is some of the most pure unadulterated racing fun you can have.

And honestly nothing matches the through of getting up and past super phantom speed in Zone and seeing how far you can go.

It has a thriving online community with a plethora of stuff to do even offline. Add in split screen and it's an awesome deal.

  • bornonce

@( shake cows, win a ) Milkshake!: Probably EVERYBODY sucks at it. It i probably the most difficult driving game (zone mode) that I have ever played, because it is so unforgiving. But it is worth every minute of it, just for the 2001 Space-Odyssey color changes. Spectacular in every way. And it supports customizable motion-control to boot. Simply a must-have for any PS3 owner.

    bornonce

  • arcadmix

To those who don't have it, what are you waiting for? It's one of most impressive games I've played on the Playstation 3, whether your a fan of the series or not. Though admittedly it may be a little difficult for the average newcomer. But it's price tag is justified entirely, in fact, its a bargain.

  • Nulls

@destro78: Yes, the gameplay is great. Not only do you havet to pilot a hovercraft at high speeds, but also hit speed boosts on the track and use/avoid weapons from other racers.

There are a many different modes too which keeps gameplay pretty fresh.

My advice to new players is to turn off the driver assist, it makes you too slow. Other than that you just have to get use to air braking which is not that hard.

  • FeatherNET

"Argyle, I think I've fallen in love!"

  • destro78

@MASOCHIST187: I guess that's my concern - will it hold me. Something tells me I might enjoy the Island Expansion in Burnout Paradise a bit more, but then again, I like to try new things. $15 could go toward Flower and some KZ2 DLC. Decisions, decisions. I'm totally on the fence for this one still.

  • Chrysalis

  • CarlMarssilas

Looks like a reason to plug my PS3 to he interwebs!!

  • a-xxv

I love how much detail they're putting into this game. I've been starting to see a lot of turn-around in terms of people playing online recently. An excellent game!!! Fury is gonna make me love it even more!

  • MASOCHIST187

    @destro78:
I bought it based stirctly on all the praise it was getting, but it didn't hold my interest for long. There isn't really anything "wrong" with it, but it just didn't do much for me...

  • PlaidNinja

@excel_excel: I don't agree. Being a big Wipeout fan I thought I would love the F-Zero games, but I really don't. Not at all. I might need to give it another chance, though it just doesn't have the same feel, and the music - which really adds quite a lot when its good - is atrocious.

  • XerxesAnkeet

bought, day one. I love Wipeout and HD's one of the best ones yet.

    XerxesAnkeet

  • destro78

@excel_excel: With the PSN sale this week, I am strongly considering the purchase. Do the different modes offer that much variety? Does it justify it's $20 (original) price? Many thanks.

  • Fadecy: Rival Schools for PSN/XB

@destro78: Just image a cross between mario kart and f1 racing set in the future, and you get the idea.

  • PlaidNinja

Yay!!! The only little tweak I would like is the ability to use my own music along with the included music (like I do on the PSP) rather than either my playlist OR the original playlist

@WhatTheFrag: I agree, this expansion has a ton of new content about as much as the original game has. All for 10 bucks is a pretty good deal.

If they keep producing expansions like this then I wouldn't mind seeing a yearly update.

  • a-xxv

@starwave: It just takes practice. I've been into the WipEout franchise since the first PS1 version, which used to send me up the wall when I got to the SilverStream track. The art style by The Designer's Republic is what got me into wanting to pursue a career in graphic design.

  • Chrystolis

Been waiting for this excitedly! Glad it's finally here :P

  • excel_excel

@destro78: If you like the F-Zero series HD should be right up your alley. The turning takes getting used to, but the sheer amount of content you get for its price is great

  • destro78

@Dr. Tobias Funke (analrapist): Dude, it is on sale this week - $15 ($5 off). Check it! http://blog.us.playstation.com/2009/07/16/playstation-store-update-94/

  • a-xxv

@Dr. Tobias Funke (analrapist): It's about $14-$15 now.

  • a-xxv

@destro78: Let's just say that it's a refreshing change from the bevy of driving sims you just mentioned.

  • destro78

Kotaku-ites: is this game as good as you make it out to be? I love me some driving sims, (Dirt, GRID, GT1-4, Burnout series, etc.) but haven't been drawn to Wipeout HD. I admit the graphics look amazing, but am not convinced the gameplay will keep me interested.
I am interested to hear your thoughts. Thanks!

  • ( shake cows, win a ) Milkshake

@SuperSonik: I love zone mode aswell...but I suck so much at it , its not even funny...

  • Dr. Tobias Funke (analrapist)

I wish that the original game was cheaper than $20. I had $20 from my birthday to spend on the PSN and instead of one game I got Flower and Burn, Zombie, Burn. Maybe when there's a sale...I do like racing games

  • SuperSonik

This might be enough to get me back into this game. Zone battle sounds sickening! I love zone play. I think this demands my 10 bucks...

    SuperSonik

  • legacy5k

Oh god, this is awesome. That's a lot of tracks!!

If it weren't for Wipeout HD, I'd have sold my ps3 by now. This is great news!

  • JudgeNutmeg is running from his

I think even with this expansion included in what the original download cost me, in UKP I'll have paid less than £20 for a full-price quality title. Tip-top!

  • starwave

this game is nice but too difficult for me. i dont know how people have many trophies on it. maybe i just suck at it but some seem too impossible to do.i still haven unlocked all the tracks in campaign mode.then again i stopped playing a long while ago.

    starwave

  • WhatTheFrag

I think this expansion's quite worth the price really for once. 9.99 in $ and Euros and 7.99 in £.

I think I'll probably be getting back to the game now. Also do wonder if this is one of those titles that's going to see a yearly update.

  • FiveSpeed

For the money, WipEout HD is a highly polished game. The Fury pack sounds great, and will push the total cost of this game to $30 (For the $19.99 buyers). If this level of craftsmanship and content is what can be brought to the consumer for $30, then other developers should take note.
