Yankees Pitcher Goes For Old-School Video Game Baseball

With a seven-year, $US161 million contact, New York Yankees pitcher C.C. Sabathia could afford to play any expensive modern game during a rain delay yesterday. But he didn’t.

The New York Times reports that Sabathia spent part of an almost three-hour rain delay at Yankee Stadium yesterday playing RBI Baseball. That would be the classic NES Game, though there was no word as to which platform he played it on.

Sabathia pitched as 1980s Minnesota Twins curveball specialist Bert Blyleven.

While it’s not rare to hear about an athlete playing a video game, it’s not as common to hear that the rich and famous are enjoying the classics. Another sign that a generation that grew up with games is sticking with them.

It’s also a sign that baseball players like playing baseball games while waiting out a delay to play more real baseball. Keeps them in the right mindset?

Awesome, thats actually the only baseball game I play as well.

I wonder if he's played The Show. He'd probably shit...greatest baseball game ever made.

As a yankee fan I can confirm it is the NES they are playing it on. In fact it is the game of choice for the younger Yankee players with tournaments being the norm between players. CC was quoted as saying "...I was playing NES, no one has beat me in RBI baseball in weeks."

I happen to prefer Baseball Simulator 1,000 for the NES. Each player has a special batting move and fielding move. Such as hitting the ball and making it have many shadows so it's hard to catch or being able to jump 50 feet in the air to catch a potential homerun ball.

@Superhacker75mil: yankee pride i love it.

i live about 30 mins from yankee stadium... i can smell another W from the 4 train... LETS GO YANKS!!!

@SeattleTed is proud to like Robert Zimmerman: haha. how much was ruth making when he was smacking the ball into the seats? or gherig? or dimaggio? seriously, if u had the money you would employ the best players available, thats not being evil, its called common sense. when NYY have generated the amount of victories and money over the years, its not that hard to see why they can spend the big bucks.

  • bangbangblah

@Commenting_Ninja: CC isn't that old. He probably was a kid when it first came out, and I'm guessing it just stuck with him. I know that I must've been about 5 or 6 when I remember playing it, and I still try to play RBI whenever I uncover the cartridge from the wreck that is my unorganization.

  • thaKingRocka

when exactly did the MLB make the move from stirrups to baggy trousers?

  • bangbangblah

@Hoytzilla: I'm sure you'd like to take credit for that, but they began their downward spiral way before that. Like after 2000.

I'm not even a Yankees fan (Cardinals, so yes, I remember 2004 vividly), but man, the joke really is that that's when the Red Sox began their first upward spiral in nearly a century. People tend to forget that they had about as bad of a track record as the Cubs. Especially ESPN.

  • Knoxximus ver. 5.66

Baseball Stars for the NES is the single greatest home baseball videogame of all time.

MLB Power Pros is the closest thing that we have gotten since...and as good as it is, it is STILL a close second.

If 3K gets their collective heads out of their asses and finally announce Power Pro 2009 (which is online enabled), there may finally be a new baseball game king....in my book.

  • SanwariDatsun

Great Baseball on Sega Master System was soo awesome... When you made a foul... instead of saying foul, it said "FOCK"

The San Fransisco Giants traveled to Cleveland last year and I covered the game. In the Giants' visiting locker room at Progressive Field, they had a top-loading NES hooked up to the gigantic HDTV in the middle of the room.

  • omfgh4x

@evilralphwiggum: Speaking of wacky pitches I remember playing a baseball game for the SNES I think by Jaleco forgot what it was called. I would get one of the sidearm pitchers and keep him in the entire game so he would get tired. Near the end of the game you could get him to throw the ball super high in the air and it would come falling down over the plate for the occasional strike. They were really hard to hit so it was great fun playing against friends like that. Ah the classics.

  • EVILSTUART

yea, about a yea or two ago on Jim Rome Is Burning he did a correspondence peace when he was saying that in the Indians club house they had bets and tournaments with RBI baseball. i thought it was cool that they played old school baseball. I cant find a video related to this, so my word will have to do.

  • hazelnut - RIP Michael Jackson

RBI baseball is great. I also loved to play NHL on the NES as well. Having a team of nothing but fat hockey players has it advantages.

Kudos on him to love a classic, even though I hate the Yankees a lot. GO DODGERS!!!!!!

Burt keeps getting snubbed for the hall of fame, maybe next year will be the year. WIN TWINS

@SeattleTed is proud to like Robert Zimmerman: So, what you're saying is that even the people who live in a certain area or grew up around that area (NY, NJ, CT) need to avoid liking their home-team just so they can avoid being insecure, high-budget-loving front-runners?

Dude, the Yanks are the home team for us here in NJ (for some it's the Mets, but eh), and furthermore, just 'cause we like them doesn't mean we appreciate Cashman's "superstar cobblestone" approach to team-building, nor the new stadium's blatant money-grubbing tactics, or anything of the sort. We like the Yankees even if they've been losing, even if we're mad at them and insulting them, because they're the home-team. Also, "purchasing of championships?" Man, I hope you're just a trolling Bosox boyo or something of that sort, because otherwise you need to get your facts straight: despite skyrocketing player deals, the Yanks haven't won a World Series in nine years, and only two League pennants in that time frame. You think that matters to us, though?

I won't lie and say I've been able to follow them as devoutly as I did in 2005 and 2006, but I'll also never say I'm not a Yankees fan even if I'm not hardcore anymore. The point is, I'm not insecure about my baseball fandom, and neither are the rest of us.

    LET'S GO, YAN-KEES!

    EDIT: I will admit though, that Onion article, old as it is, is hilarious. ^o^;

  • FreakyFavabean

@zanzibarlegend: Living in MA, it's kinda hilarious how seriously Red Sox fans take this competition. By kinda I mean incredibly. Personally, I prefer the Yankees, but I can see that the Red Sox are an excellent team too.

  • TheKennedy

    i prefer bases loaded myself.

  • ThickSkinned

To me, High Heat is still the best baseball game. Too bad Microsoft bought it in the 3DO fire sale and decided to shelve it in favor of their own game which isn't even made anymore.

  • The_Green_Ninja

@SeattleTed is proud to like Robert Zimmerman: Emotional Coping Skills? Seriously? First, what makes you think I'm a Yankee fan due to their money? From what I remember, the Yankees won 26 world series without a lot of money players. And why would us fans turn to Notre Dame when they can turn to the team from greatest team ever in Title Town, The Green Bay Packers?

    The_Green_Ninja

  • MaximusDM

I'm sure he needs it to keep himself motivated. Recycled sports games coming every year are not the epitome of innovation, but rather a cash in. And he doesn't want to support that. He wants to support the game for what it is. By playing RBI Baseball, he is in fact showing his true patriotism as an American.

Regardless of it being on a Japanese console.

@Hey_Blinkon: You see what you did there? Yankee fans are lacking the emotional coping skills most societal members are born with, so they foster their insecurity with a sport which enables the purchasing of championships. One day a salary cap will be introduced, and they will have to resort to their other team...Notre Dame, the greatest football team in the universe.

Nes Baseball games are my favorite. I grew up on Baseball Simulator 1.000. All those wacky pitches, hits, and jumping guys. Fun stuff. Would love to see a remake of it like Tecmo releasing that new Tecmo Bowl game for the DS. Baseball Simulator DS? I'm so there.

Sounds like a viral Wii ad.
