Brutal Legend Trophies And Achievements Deliver Heavy Metal Flu
Brutal Legend is a metal game. So it’s achievements and trophies? Also metal.
Take for instance the game’s version of Heavy Metal Flu: Six Degrees of Schafer.
“The “Six Degrees of Schafer” Achievement/Trophy is rewarded when you play with or against Tim Schafer in Brutal Legend’s epic multiplayer mode. The achievement is also viral, meaning that once you play Tim (or someone who has played Tim), you then have the achievement, and then when you play someone else, they get it, and then when that person plays someone else, they get it, etc etc, rinse, repeat…. Think of it like the flu, a heavy metal flu if you will… ”
Note that the Playstation 3 version has one more trophy than the 360 version has achievements. It’s called Rock God, earned for collecting all PS3 trophies.

@grantanamo: Ok, Jack Black is enormously popular with the same demographic this game is targeted for. He's going to boost sales, not hurt them. As for the metal thing, do you really need to be a metal fan to play this game? I think not. Shafer despite his genius hasn't gotten the mega popularity he deserves, but this game should do fine.
If it's Pyschonauts that's worrying you then just remember who published the game. Majesco that's fucking who. BL on the other hand has a big bad publisher with a huge marketing department.

@grantanamo: Yeah, heavy metal and video games have proven to have, like, zero overlap.
Look at how the Guilty Gear property died right after the first PSX entry. A shame, really, because I feel like they could have milked that property into about a 10-game series. If only they used rap music instead of metal.

I'm never really able to complete my achievements, there are some I know I'm going to be picking up, like the vistas trophy/achievement. When I demoed the game at E3 the world looked great and I wanted to explore as much as possible.

Usually these viral things can be gotten insanely easily.....never underestimate how fast things spread in p vs p games. I got the Magic the Gathering and Small Arms and Guitar Hero 3 virals literally in my first match of each game, and I got my GTA 4 viral within the first day or two of owning the game (bought that one at launch, so the viral took a couple days to spread I guess). Seems like these days it would almost be an achievement to find somebody who DOESN'T have the viral.

@Fallible.: Couldn't agree more, it just seems like the over the top singer/over the top actor is at it again. To me it is really corny like all of the songs hes ever done and probably every movie hes done with the exception of "Orange County"; the movie that made me like him for a while, at least until I saw any of his other movies
"School of Rock" "Nacho Libre" need I go on? Basically any roles more demanding than that of a supporting actor (not even a co-star) is too much Jack Black for me.

@Jawmuncher: What else can there be for achievements? I can't recall any achievements where it wasn't "complete X chapter" or "do X things X times." That's pretty much all you can do for achievements, unless it's discovering a place or thing.
@grantanamo: Yes but its niche + niche + niche, mind you there is more than 3 niches in this game, but when you add them up, you got an Oceans Eleven type deal(star power), where each element brings its own base collectively creating a quite sizable base to speak to.
In that case the movie in my opinion sucked but the actors provided a worst case scenario amount of fans to see it regardless of whether it was good or not. Believe me I'm not by any means promoting this game, Rocktobers not happening for me, I'll be too busy with Uncharted 2 and Ratchet and Clank Future. I'm just saying this game has quite a broad appeal collectively from Rockstar power and the Niches you spoke of
that its success is definitely a possibility.

I've been saying it from the start, Jack Black saving the world by rocking out to the rocking powers of metal is, essentially, the same tired formula that's been used in everything he's ever been associated with.
I fail to see how the powers of Schafer can change the inevitable, I'm personally not picking it up - and I am a Kotaku reader.

I wouldn't call Jack Black as much of a niche actor as I would call him someone that people either really love or really don't like at all with only a little gray in between. Basically, his presence in the game could hurt it as much as help it.
Heavy metal, oh if this game were released back in the 70s it would have made a killing with all the metal heads. Yeah, heavy metal still has a decent following, but again, its something that as likely to hurt the game as help it.
Shafer, he's awesome. If only really good ideas translated easily into commercial success.
This game is going to Kick Ass like a movie based on a Mark Millar comic.

And Metal as a niche genre? What world do you live in? Yeah, it's not a pop genre, but calling it niche is just wrong. A niche genre would be techno, or some metal subgenres, like Black Metal or Noisecore. Metal has as much public notoriety as rock or country, and it helps that the gamer demographic seems to have a lot of overlap with metal fans.
@cjlopez: Realism isn't being a troll. I never said this game was going to be bad. It will probably be an excellent game. But it is what I said, a niche game. Niche's are inherently small, beloved but small. And this game does not have any features that will pull general sales beyond the hardcore, ie Kotaku reader.

Anybody know if there is console-exclusive DLC planned for this game? I want to get it for PS3, but I'm not sure if DLC is planned just for Xbox like Fallout 3.
While the name and descriptions are original, the actual trophies/achievements don't really seem to be. Do X thing X times is all the achievements seem to be.
Still can't wait to play the game though
