CCP Boss: Dust 514 For Those Who ‘Blow Sh— Up’
DUST 514 takes the prize for most intriguing hybrid—console FPS/RTS/MMO that performs in the persistent EVE Online universe. Here, the CCP Games CEO explains the concept more, including the fundamental difference in EVE and Dust characters.
Hilmar Pétursson drew a familiar analogy—EVE Online players are the air force; DUST 514 players are the (wait for it) marines. Space marines! Pétursson went on to say that while EVE inhabitants are “different people”, focused on operating spacecraft. A character in DUST “would rather run around, blow shit up. That is his skill.”
You see, EVE players talk like this and DUST 514 players talk like this.
Pétursson says the game have persistency elements of its own, as well as ones from the EVE universe. He made no announcement or hint of when this will be available, other than CCP’s been working on it for three years.

@cerebus201: Eeeehhh...
Going from EVE to a shooter would be a bit like going from Mozart to Eminem. I seriously doubt EVE players would dump EVE for a shooter, regardless of universe.

well, i have faith on it even though it is console based, but being console based also has upsides, one being the linear console requirements, have one set of req's makes a whole lot less programming on spec collection.
and all it has to do really is connect with the eve server to see which planets are under what control, and which ones are going to be contested and such other than that(which is basically connecting online) its just an fps with persistant tracking(like recent god games, halo, battlefield and many others now heading into stat heavy territory)
@skaven: I should have made it clear I was going off info from a Teacher. He said that because Eve online used real-world skills, the skills you use if you're successful on it can be used in a resume. This would require the company be familiar with the game, but this differs greatly from other online games due to how it mirrors the real world, and a game you play by yourself (such as many sims that could have the same requirements) would offer no means of proof (unless they saw you playing them)
An online game like Eve, however, could have your success on display for your potential employers to see. Being a good player on Eve means you may have skills that can transfer into the real world. At the very least, it's not any worse than those UNICRU forms.
@Anunnaki: thye are making a huge stand in the gaming world by making the console version interact 100% with the pc version. once the game comes out it will certainly recieve awards
if it was on the pc it would be sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much better.
Is this going to be for the 360 or PS3?
With all the trouble and heartache that M$ has been giving developers of console based MMO's, I'm hoping we'll see it on the PS3.
@bobtheduck: Eve is not the only game, in fact it's not even legal to sell ISK for real money, besides ISK sellers on Eve are no different than Gold sellers on WoW exept that Eve's gold sellers are all macro bots. You certainly won't make enough money by actually playing the game but you could get money by strip mining or some such on several different accounts (probably not enough to live in America above the poverty line though)
If you want to talk about making money on a video game without breaking that game's terms and conditions, thus a real job, Entropia or whatever has the biggest jackpots but it's hard to get started in that game without putting money down.

@highprioritymale: I'm not sure what you mean. PC games aren't exactly lacking in terms of variety.
I'm sure that there are plenty of console gamers who do know what EVE is, but to the vast majority of console gamers, the only MMO they know of is WoW, so this is just going to be another generic shooter to them.
Also, I am a PC gamer that doesn't have $300 + $600-800 to buy a decent HDTV. And if I did, I would spend it on something else. I'm sure Dust will be fun, but there's not a chance in hell I'm paying $1000+ for it. Not to mention, FUCK playing FPSs with a controller.
I really like the idea of this, but it seems a bit too ambitious for a console game.
Ubersoldat19
he lost me at console fps.
hellhound
@Anunnaki: If you like different gameplay styles why would you only want to play PC games? EVE's been out for over 6 years now. I quit playing EVE about 4 years ago, but I'm still interested in the universe even though I don't play it. Getting the most out of EVE can be a huge time commitment, while a shooter typically isn't.
I'm sure there are plenty of people all over the world who play both PCs and consoles who know about EVE. It's one of the only MMOGs I know of where people of many nations come together in one community to play.
Dust 514 is not exclusive to any specific platform yet, it just won't be on PC. And in all reality, do you really think that a PC gamer who knows about EVE and wants to play Dust won't have $300 to buy a console?
highprioritymale
@ReconToaster.: OMG he didn't say no PC version HE DID NOT SAY NO PC VERSION!!! Jeez, if he said no then you can really start to yammer on..
Dirame
I think they want to keep it console-only so they don't lose EVE players to Dust overnight. EVE players who don't get Dust for their consoles will have to keep playing EVE, which is what CCP wants. Not what I want, but that doesn't matter to CCP.
cerebus201
i really doubt this will ever come out, for many reasons. 1) its a console mmo. 2) it sounds to awesome to be true 3) its a console mmo, and some other reasons that i forgot (but they are there dammit!)
I wonder if this is going to be downloadable or disc based. I hope the former.
This sounds interesting. I wonder how it will tie in to Eve-O.
I don't understand. If they're making this game for the people who want to play EVE, but don't like its gameplay style, then why are they making this for console only? I am one of the people they're talking about, and I don't even own a console.
Most console gamers don't even know what the hell EVE Online is. They're making this game exclusive on a platform for which there is no market at all. All those players they're talking about who just want to blow shit up are the PC gamers that tried EVE Online and got bored.
@Pikachu Mariachi: A hispanic videogame character.: You forget how big a bastard France was in the decades after WWII.
They didnt mind blowing up civilians then, so its been downgraded to virtual explosions now.
@Murauder: you wont need one, its consoles, just get one when the game comes out
When will this wet dream become a reality?
Because....I.....reallly want it.
hippo24
This is pure genius. Such a great idea I am sooo getting an Eve account.
Murauder
@Imin2Nuggets: Maybe they just want to give consoles a taste of the EVE universe, eh?
@Pikachu Mariachi: A hispanic videogame character.: This guy isn't French at all, he's from Iceland.
slimky
@mintycrys is HOT for Bayonetta: how would he be able to, and intell about what kind of air to ground?
to me this seems like you asked a potato how the carrot grew.
the game will basically be battlefield with pc player suppport.
@bobtheduck:
I always thought playing EVE was getting a job. Except you're paying for it monthly.
Yeah, that was negative. Tell us more of this job. And tell me how other games don't do the same. (My boss is a Diablo 2 freak. And guess who helped him beat Mephisto.)
@skaven: it cant, you can get jobs in it,but unless you were selling isk, then you cant get an actual job as far as im aware
@ReconToaster.: because they don't want to.
that was pretty simple.
Ryan Meehan
@ReconToaster.: They'll make a lot more money on console sales, providing it sells that's.
@eatsleepdie: EL OH EL
yes crappy pc hardware, thats it.....
@ReconToaster.: BAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWW
it would be nice if they made it for pc, but i dont mind how its for consoles, and i think their focus is to bring the xbox, ps3, and pc together.
although making a pc version would be nice.
from what i understand,
when a corp wants to claim a planet instead of their ships attacking the towers on the planet systems, they issue an order to attackl the system,and when they do that, they hire clans(which are on the consoles) to war for them,
the clan accepts or denies(obviously most corps will just make their own clan with their own people so they always have a reliable army) and then the game goes into an fps mmo.
and for pc players, the game is an rts, spacefighter mmo.
the corps can issue air support, such as satalite strikes or ion cannon like strikes, and the corps also supply the clan with money to buy weapons and assets.
so while the |"grunts" are on the ground fighting, the pc players are trying to take out the corps air assets.
thing is, alot of the uber hard core players are complaining because now whether they get a system isnt up to them 100% anymore, while others, like my corp, are dancing with their shoes on their hands, because we have enough money, that and the idea is a good idea, it helps alittle bit with the balance of it all.
@eatsleepdie: I have a feeling this is gonna ignite something...
@ReconToaster.:
cause pc is dead because of crappy pc hardware.
eatsleepdie
always wanted to see a homeworld mmo that had pilots soliders and what not... would have been fun to board an enemy ship and wipe out the crew.
eatsleepdie
@bobtheduck: How could it get you a job again?
Something's wrong when you've got Frenchmen boasting the ability to "blow shit up".
@Psychopathic Assassin: I've only met one EVE Online player, and I don't recall him being able to provide me with stellar air & ground intel.
mintycrys is HOT for Bayonetta
It'll be interesting to see how this unfolds. Kudos for CCP for trying something newly absorbing.
I don't get it....
Why don't they just MAKE IT FOR PC!
Seeing as their fanbase consists entirely of PC gamers...
ReconToaster.
Funny how they make it console only...I think CCP is saying something bout console players here...
@bobtheduck: ignoring your anti wow comment, how could EVE onlinee get you a real job? Seriously? I'm starting to get interested in Eve online all of a sudden. But I hate learning curves....such a n00b I am.
EVE online was the only game that simply playing (and not making mods for, like Doom or Quake or UT) could get you a job.
I doubt the new game will be able to claim that, but having a shooter take place in the MIDDLE of something like that seems pretty interesting. I'd love to have a game take place in the middle of WOW, so I could kill some WOW players without having to actually play it.
Eve online players are like the chair force...um..what?!? I mean air force......
