Adult Films Push For Presence On Gaming Consoles

The head of the largest adult video production company in the world plans to start pushing for the inclusion of porn on the Playstation Network.

If Vivid Entertainment head Steve Hirsch succeeds, he will look into getting adult videos on the Xbox 360 and perhaps the Wii, the co-founder of Vivid told Kotaku.

“Our point is pretty simple,” Hirsch told Kotaku. “As long as age verification is in place that (Sony) feels comfortable with we see no reason why adults shouldn’t be allowed to access adult movies on the Playstation 3.”

Hirsch said his company, that has an extensive catalogue of films including Bad Wives, Seven Deadly Sins and Tristan Taramino’s Expert Guide to Oral Sex 2, is in the process of drafting a formal request to send to Sony Computer Entertainment, but that they have not yet discussed the idea with the company.

Sony official did not respond to requests for comment for this story.

Hirsch says they’ve decided to broach the subject now with Sony because of their decision last month to allow Japan’s DDM.TV to bring on-demand Blu-ray quality HD adult movies to the console. That service is only available in Japan.

“They had made it clear in the past they were not interested,” Hirsch said. “Now that they have agreed to in someway allow adult films on the Japanese platform we are going to move forward and make a formal request.”

Sony’s reluctance to allow adult films on their platform is not a new issue, Hirsch said they confronted the same issues when Blu-ray first came out.

“We do support Blu-ray now, but Sony did not want adult Blu-ray for a long time,” he said. “The way they stopped that from happened was that there was only a few places where you could get Blu-ray replicated and authored.

“For a long time it was only HD-DVD that would allow us to replicate in HD. Ultimately Sony came around.”

And Hirsch hopes the same will happen with the Playstation Network.

The idea is that there would be an Adults Only section on the Playstation 3’s online network, which already rents and sells more mainstream movies. There are a number of ways to verify that a person is 18 before they get access to that area, Hirsch said.

Hirsch understands it will be an uphill battle.

“It is certainly something that creates a lot of attention, when you talke about adult content being put on any new platform,” he said. “It isn’t that dissimilar to getting it on cell phones.

“Certainly we understand there is going to be some resistance on Sony’s part when it comes to adult content on their console. We all understand there are kids who use the Playstation every day and we want to keep content away from them but there are also adults who use it.”

Vivid Entertainment is currently drafting a letter that they plan to send to Sony by the end of the week, he said. And if things go well, Hirsch will look into getting adult content on Microsoft’s Xbox Live video service and other gaming platforms.

“It is something as an industry we would like to accomplish,” he said. “If we move forward here we would look at other potential gaming platforms like the Xbox 360. The Wii seems to skew a little young.”

How about we get some AO games before we start pushing for straight porn. I don't understand why R rated movies can have T@A but games like ME are 'edgy' for having a mild and tasteful sex scene.

@KillerBee: You hit the nail on the head with that. Could you imagine if porn officially made it onto the playstation 3...someone in middle America would leave their PS3 on, their kid would get ahold of the controller and order some Debby Does Dallas. Fox News would find out and everything would go downhill from there.

Letting porn on their systems would be a horrific mistake for any of Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo.

Make no mistake, I'm not a prude about porn, not at all. But that's not what this is about.

Unlike DVD-player manufacturers, console makers monitor the content allowed on their box. Many people honestly don't understand that Sony doesn't itself make or assist in making all the games that come out for the PS3. Honestly, ask the man on the street. So the idea that Sony controls its content and that it's cool to leave a kid with an PS3 is important. Kids are still a huge part of the console gaming market.

Now, add porn into the argument, and you scare the shit out of parents. It doesn't matter if there's parental controls, it doesn't matter if you need a credit card, all that matters is that you've put a reason for not buying your product into somebody's head when before there wasn't one. I wouldn't leave my little cousin on the internet without guidance, but I would allow him on the XBox. That can't change.

So what do you gain for having porn on your box? A small slice of the profits. But...
    a) Like all other digital products, sales of porn are falling off a cliff. People may feel bad stealing a game that 100s of people worked on. Stealing porn feels good, nobody cares.
    b) It's the porn companies who'd make the most bank. Why tarnish your brand just to facillitate them?

It would have to be on accounts with persons aged 18+ and would need to be able to be hidden unless the user wants it to be shown. But I'm all for it. Maybe when little kids download some porn on PS3 then the parents will finally pay attention to what they're doing.

  • Laronvas

The fact most parents don't even know about parental controls and the ones who do are too lazy to set them, this could be an epic back fire on the consoles here in US.

I don't think there's a place for Porno on consoles. Anyway who doesn't have a PC, but have an internet connection near their PS3? Just download your porn on your PC. I don't want to be embarrassed when I'm looking at the PSN stores near my familly because there's porn on it.

  • ReT

Wouldnt really phase me either way. If you going to use the 'kids' argument, well they can and probably get all the porn they need on their (or their parents) PC's anyhow. If its done right and in a decent enough manner then sure - go for it. I'd assume that most people who own a PS3 are over 18 anyway. Those who are younger, if they REALLY wanted would find a way to get hold of porn, and FREE porn at that.

  • Northern Cat

We all know how clunky age verification is when it comes to online stuff...

It can't work. I'm not morally against it, though I myself wouldn't really feel comfortable having an XXX tab on the PS Store, but I don't think it can be done properly right now.

  • kobeashi

Why does the introductory paragraph of this say he's considering the Wii when his quote sounds pretty contrary...?

I don't really see this actually happening, but it would be pretty epic if it did. They may have a better shot on the PS3 then the 360, though, since MS won't even allow character names that contain a lot of words found in most porn titles :P

Sony didn't want porn on Blu-Ray? Didn't they have Vivid entertainment as one of the backers for the format?

  • Eville1 rocks out with his roost

To turn a phrase; "Porn is the yardstick of our digital civilization." Look at the format wars through the years. VHS and DVD were recognized as the dominate formats AFTER porn adopted them. And they usually adopted it first. And I believe the same thing happened with HD DVD vs BR when Pirates came out in BR HD. Coincidentally I believe that is a Vivid movie. Sony should certainly not come off as puritanical here. There's a shit ton of money to be made.

Sounds like a logical business step for Vivid, and ultimately a non-issue when you look at the relative availability (in the USA at least) of DVD-based pornography. The process for configuring pornographic content from an official online service will probably be MORE complicated on the PS3/Xbox than just acquiring a DVD from an "adult" friend/relative and popping it into either perfectly capable system.

  • Tuor_of_Gondolin

@KillerBee: Why not? Both Sony and Microsoft are trying to make their consoles into "entertainment centers", right? They want their consoles to do much more than just play games. Well, this is part of that process, IMO.

At some point, Sony and Microsoft are going to have to deal with this sort of thing. They already have several safeguards in place. This is an *image* issue for them, not a technological one.

I think if they want their consoles to grow up into full-blown entertainment centers that cater to people of all ages and multiple interests, then they need to treat their users accordingly, and not like we're all under 18 years old.

    Tuor_of_Gondolin

  • No cool name here... Move along

@Eville1 rocks out with his rooster out.: Actually, as mentioned in the article, the porn industry went for HD DVD over Blu-ray, until that format went the way of the dodo. Also, Pirates was released on both formats, so was by no means a crucial factor in Blu-ray's eventual victory.

I personally think, as a quasi-Libertarian, that if Sony shouldn't try to pretend that they don't already support the industry by allowing them to release on Blu-Ray. They shouldn't restrict them from putting that kind of content on the PSN, but I don't think they should be required to. They already allow for pr0n viewing via their Flash9-capable web browser, so why stop there? It's people's right to view it if they want, so it's really up to Sony on whether or not they see it as a viable income source.

Porn on console is available now for those who wants to do it...no different than any other video to get on the ps3. But to allow it on the PSN is another story. I don't think sony will do that. They have no mechanism for 18+ store right now. And even if they did they'll get angry letters from parents and sales will suffer. Forget it on the wii...there's no way in hell that's going to happen. 360?....maybe but I still think MS will not do it. If I want porn I can get it elsewhere. I don't need it to show on the psn and clutter up the screen.

They're allowing porn on their Japanese store already.

  • Hyperpower!

First and foremost... I don't understand the need to turn gaming consoles into masturbation machines. However, here is a more logical approach to bypass the whole "Click here if you are 18" nonsense. It's a long post, so grab an apple or a soda pop before you read!

Here's a better way of determining someone's age, because let's face it, clicking "Yes I am 18" isn't exactly a fool proof plan to prevent minors from viewing pornographic material, and punching in a credit card number is just as insufficient to judge someone's age.

Drivers License Number. Punch that in, the network communicates with the DMV to check the drivers license to check the birthdate, and sends a letter or an email to the driver requesting verification that the individual requested said service, and to seal the deal you need to give the DMV your SSN (social security number).

DMV checks their records, confirms validity of the SSN with what they have on record, and the service is authorized. Yes, it would take more than a week to do. Yes, if you want to download dirty porn you'll have to embarrassingly let the DMV know you're a pervert.

But what this does do is prevent minors from using a parent's driver's license number, or an older friend's driver's license number to access Vivid Entertainment's admittedly superior quality pornographic films.

Of course, one can always steal or 'borrow' another's SSN, but not very many young adults actually know their SSN I'm willing to bet. Either way, this process forces direct contact with the person whose identification is being used, and could potentially weed out a lot of kids lying about their age to see what a vagina looks like.

@Lux Alptraum: But the platform, a video game console, isn't right. It's not ripe for porn - not yet, not even close.

As much as Microsoft and Sony like to market their systems as multimedia hubs, not toys, they're still perceived mostly as video game consoles, i.e. something that children use a lot.
Any kind of association between "children" and "porn", no matter how remote, would be incredibly damaging to any company. Kiss-of-death damaging.

Sony and MS could tout parental controls all they wanted, they'd be crucified by the media, parent advocacy groups and religious organisations. Just look at how big box stores refuse to carry AO-rated games - and the few games that came close to being "adult only" were usually no more than the video game equivalent of your average torture-porn flick: forget about actual porn.

In the US - and probably in my dearly depraved Europe, too - porn would do far more damage than good to either console.

@Lux Alptraum: You know me, and as much as I'd like to see this happen, it won't. There's no way that Sony would allow true adult content (even the relatively tame stuff that Vivid produces) on it's console, primarily for the backlash it would recieve from conservatives. You'd have bunches of people protesting and not buying the console just out of moral outrage. And they just don't need that kind of publicity right now, or anytime soon.

  • Areinu

@Hyperpower!: Unless you do that on global scale and make it so EVERY porn service on the globe goes with that system it's totally pointless.

It's much easier for children to get to porn on PCs and it's easier for parents to limit content access on consoles. There's just totally no point in your system. The kids won't be trying to bypass PS3's age verification. They'll just play their games on PS3 and watch their porn on PCs where they can safely alt+tab or alt+f4.

Add to that that many consoles are setup in cental place in home, where biggest TV is, while kids have their PCs at their rooms. Rooms they can just lock if needed...

There's always be some small porn site living off ads that will have yes/no question to answer to get entrance. Kids will find it.

Parents might try to use some software limiting access to porn, kids will either find walkaround or... they will just ask older friends to buy them a magazine or 2 to keep under bed.

I don't remember how young I was when I saw my first porn, I remember it was german, I saw it with older friend and we talked about how they never take their shoes off. Somehow it didn't break my brain, I'm normal 23 old person and get into normal relationship, go to normal college, have normal job. Wait, come to think of it they aren't normal. @Hyperpower!: Very good point, and a good idea. It would prevent every youngster below 16 first of all and every false ID and/or Driveslicence would become invalid aswell i presume.

What if a youngster "borrows" his big brothers DL and his SSN then? Wouldn't he be able to access the content? Isn't the SSN printed on the DL aswell (in sweden your SSN is printed on the DL, but the minimum age is 18 for a DL)?

What if you verified your age when registering a new account on PSN/XBL/wii instead. The same problematics still occur with the chance of youngsters "borrowing" but on the other hand your account allready has the verification of you date of birth from the start and the hassle of going through several verifications later could be gone (when trying to acces any and all adult material, including games and movies).

This would ofcourse need a more thoughtful approach in locking and unlocking your account to others than youself i.e more that the password "x+square+triangle". however there may be a smarter loginsystem in place already since atm I am the only user on my xbox. Correct me if I may be wrong.

    My 2 cents anywho.

  • jomama22

    @Hyperpower!:

I think its a great idea but i think there are a few problems that could arrise.

First and foremost, to assume everyone over 18 has a license doesn't make sense. Not only that, but it is a difficult for of identification to acquire. Unlike a credit card, it can take months to years for some people to get a license.

Second, why would i ever wait a full week if not longer (we all know how the dmv works) to get approval from ps or the dmv about my age. The process is way to long and elaborate. Not only that but i dont want that kind of information going through that many hands before it gets to me.

Third, if i want to watch porn, its now. Im not anxious or planning on watching porn. To take the time to go through all of that makes no sense. Ill just hop on my computer and get it for free, lol.

Fourth, you interested in protecting those under 18. well if lets say your a dad and you have 1 ps3 in the whole house and you want to watch porn on it. You go through your process and now your ps3 is unlocked...well your kid could get on it to then and just do what you did without wait a week lol. Which then in turn makes us think "Well why not lock it out on the system?" well that would defeat your whole dmv system wouldnt it? lol

sry, im not trying to rain on your parade, the idea was just very perplexing.

@Hyperpower!: That doesn't sound like a bad idea. I think there are tons of security issues with getting this setup and who knows if the DMV would be down for allowing this. Plus the Porn industry would have to foot the bill to set it up because you know Sony's not going to.

In either case, I think it's a good idea.

My only qualm with this is the fact that kids hitting puberty need to go this far to see what a vagina or a penis looks like. They shouldn't be mysterious items considering everyone has one or the other...or both.

  • DNinja

@Hyperpower!: You make a good point, and that would work, but do you really want the DMV to know you rented porn? I'm not sure it's a good idea to get the government involved in this. Credit card verification should work just as well, and it is already used to purchase/rent porn online. Also, the big 3 consoles have parental controls, which could be expanded further to protect against access to this new content.

See on one hand (ahoho) consoles are for gaming, and on the other, the manufacturers seem very keen on turning their machines into all encompassing media-hubs. So it seems like a slightly skewed if logical step.

I'm also enjoying the "lol porn is free" posts. Well yes it is. As free as music and games and films are. And as legal to acquire free as well.

  • Bubbleman!

@MPSai: the fact that porn is like some giant skeleton in the closet when it comes to children only helps to increase the rate of teenage pregnancies and underage sex.

when is this country going to realize that by keeping things taboo and off limits to children, they just become that much more sought after? the same thing applies to the drinking age and drug use. if the thrill of doing something "bad" is taken away, then the overall usage and abuse should decrease dramatically.

  • Gazuk50

@Hyperpower!: Its certainly an interesting concept and sounds quite tight in principle. Didnt even have internet when i was teenager so the only way to ever see porn was from mags. A mate would get hold of one and pass it on once he had a good *ahem* read of its many articles. Even then you needed a bloody good stash, vigilant parenting was more than enough to keep my young and innocent eyes from seeing anything more than a few centrefold type shots. I wouldnt say id totally oppose it on the PSN, i mean all the UK's pay per view TV packages carry the option for adult channels, there at the end of a channel list that includes kids tv and toons etc so i dont see a moral problem with it. On the security front, surely you would have to pay for it, how many under 18s have a credit card? It could be setup so that a card number needs entered each time along with a SecurID token number something like that. The SecurID token could be sent out once you have subscribed to the service, then its just down to the parents to keep it safe from their kids.

    Gazuk50

  • Hunter-Killer-47

    This probably won't work.

Most people still live in the mindset that video-games are for children. That's why so many people still get their knickers in a twist over there being violent video-games. How mad do you think these people would be if consoles started having porn as well?

I dunno, I just think that it would be a lot less of a legal hassle if you'd just watch your copy of Anal Sluts 9 with the DVD function on your 360 or PS3. Or use the internet. That's pretty easy too.

    Hunter-Killer-47

  • mrclam

@Bubbleman!: I agreee.. And with that logic - We should also make violence off limits to children too.

You're TOTALLY correct - we should ban violent video games.

    mrclam

  • tenaciousmonkey

@Golgari: I don't know about porn movies, more along the lines of porn distributors being console exclusive (of course, that would encompass the movies being exclusive too). Time for MS and Sony to start buying or teaming up with adult production studios!

  • ggodo, the man from R.O.A.C.H.

@Lux Alptraum: See, and that's the key thing. In America video games are for small children so their parents don't have to talk to them. In japan, video games are for creepy shut-ins who play one handed anyway.

these public perceptions have a lot to do with how people perceive what they can and can't get away with. I really have no preference on porn on the PS3 because I don't have one, and I probably wouldn't use it for that anyway because, well, I got roommates and any sort of game console would be in a public position. The media, however will flip out. remember the kid who used his PSP and his school's wifi connection to look at porn? the news ran it like every PSP ships with porn and can magically create more. No one wants that again.

  • widowhams

    AWWWW YEAH 1080p TITTYS!

  • mrclam

    @Kapwan: Why?

If games consoles were wholesome and pure i'd get your point.

But a lot of games have been shooting peoples heads off, and all manner of other pornographic violent acts.

Sex is something EVERY person will (hopefully) do in their lives - blowing someones head off with a shotgun (hopefully) not so much.

Why should sexual pornography be treated any different by gaming manufacturers than violent pornography?

Why SHOULDNT there be as many games featuring graphic sex as feature graphic violence? In fact, i'd argue that graphic sex is a lot MORE wholesome for of entertainment than graphic violence.

But it seems a lot of people think shooting someone in the face with a shotgun is okay, but shooting your load on someones face is wrong...

its no wonder the world is screwed up.

    mrclam

  • ex_nihilo

@KillerBee: I agree, but I see this as a symptom of a larger problem. I'm not a consumer of porn ( too busy to sit around fapping ), but I find it disturbing that we are all perfectly fine with dismembering things with chainsaws yet we freak out about seeing two ( or more ) consenting adults fucking. It's just sad: brutal violence = ok, sex = big no-no.

I'm not advocating for the placement of porn on consoles, especially considering how easy it is to obtain through other channels, but I am lamenting the public perception of sexual activity and material that celebrates it. Why are exploding heads ok but not money shots?

Apparently they haven't seen some of the Premium PS3 desktops available for download - yowza!

I personally don't want porn anywhere on my PS3, but I'm not going to speak for all other PS3 owners.

It does open an opportunity to approach the discussion in an adult manner (no pun intended). I think if advanced parental controls were developed specifically to track PS3 usage, this discussion would take a more interesting course. Having features like tracking web-site visits, video file usage, automated email updates to parents from PSN I think would be great assets to parents.

This is an opportunity for Sony to enable parents to take a bigger stake in how their kids use these systems and not pass the parental responsibility to manufacturers. PC manufacturers (Sony included) have been dealing with this for years. As these systems become more PC-oriented, it's inevitable.

Eventually these young users do become legal, self governing parents. This seems a great opportunity to bring them into the discussion rather than talking down to them.

An electronic is an electronic, most of the people who bought a PS3 did so because it was a media center focused around gaming. Not only that but look at the number of people that already have some porn on their PS3s.

It isn't abnormal, in the least bit. You and others are just prudes.

It is nothing but a bunch of horny guys with a couple of video cameras paying girls to allow them to screw them fourteen different ways in the guise of "adult entertainment". I wish California had the guts to shut down Vivid and company for noting more than soliciting prostitution. I love beautiful and sexy women, but have no desire to see some tattooed freak of nature blocking the view of the girl while he slobbers all over her for twenty minutes. Besides, high-def porn can be quite unappetizing to look at.

  • piggythewonderdog

@Antiterra: It's not an issue of platform; Cable TV, DVD, VHS, PC, Mac, iPhone... these are all platforms and you can watch porn with any of these technologies. The adult industry has always been a driver for new technologies, so expanding to video-gaming technologies is a natural progression.

What matters is whether or not there's a "market" for the expansion to a certain platform. Is there a market for adult media on gaming consoles? If a certain console's market demographic targets kids & elderly (Nintendo Wii?) then most likely the adult industry won't go there. However, if there is a console that sells well to single men, then there may be a market.

She explained and the man looked at her like she was crazy. Frankly, I'm ambivalent to the issue of having filth on the PS3 or 360. Let's face it, I could be watching folk go at it hammer-and-tongs within 60 seconds of sitting down in front of a PC. It's not like it's not already widely available. Having it available through a console barely makes it any *more* available than it already is.

That said, I'll be *amazed* if Sony allows it. The family-friendly market is worth too much to them, even more so now the new price tag on a PS3 puts it within reach of the family consumer. And a few storm-in-a-teacup stories on Fox as we go into the holiday season could hurt them to the tune of millions of dollars.

It would be a sensible move to the porn industry. Easy availability, easy purchase, consoles with working parental control (and if they aren't, it means it should be updated to make it more resilient to children.)

Like there isn't any illegal porn on PSPs and PS3s already, like there isn't any porn on PC, over the Internet (remember in the early days where everyone on the Internet was a pervert-pedophile-or-worst), and like there isn't already a freaking crapload of wallpapers showing scantily clad young girls (or drawings) already available for a purchasing fee (and don't tell me they don't sell, if they didn't, they wouldn't be there). It's so mainstream it even went as far as children finding stashes inside their used consoles purchased in some big chains. So why not capitalize on the system and allow full-fledged legal porn over our consoles.

Let's be honest here. Consoles like DSi start up asking for a parental control code. Consoles have all the parental control information available handily. Actually purchasing something would require a credit card, that's supposed to be made available to responsible adults only. And games are supposed to be under adult supervision, as everyone tells us, TV is not a nanny. Finally, if they allow that, there would be a freaking lot of red tape to make sure you are actually legal to download that stuff. So if a kid is getting his thrills over PS3 with some parent letting it happen, it's bound to revert to some bad parenting.

Nice thought. Never going to happen!

The negative publicity would make "Sexbox" and Hot Coffee look like an exercise in holding hands and pitching woo.

But more importantly, the legal implications. Full blow, honest to god pornography is a legally restricted category of material in almost every country, with distribution heavily regulated. Sony as a online distributor, would have to navigate an international legal minefield.

Even assuming they bypass that insurmountable hurdle, there's the issue of child protection. Parental locks on the PS3 are inadequate. But then, they could never be adequate because there's no age restriction on the console itself! Something tells me Sony don't want to rebrand their console as an exclusively adult affair.

    Jonathan Davies

  • Sarcasmancer

I'd be pretty shocked if Sony agreed to this; Fox would have a field day with it and I can't even imagine what kind of shit storm they'd be facing when kids inevitably figure out how to bypass the age verification systems. I'm also kind of surprised Vivid is pushing so hard for this deal. Gamers tend to be the internet savvy types and I imagine most of them would just browse through the adult catalog and then go torrent anything that catches their fancy. Then again, I've always found it baffling that the porn industry has blossomed in our internet era instead of going bankrupt. I guess people will pay for pretty much anything as long as big boobs are involved.

The funny thing about this is that all kids are aware that XBL limits you pretty severely if you admit to being under 18, so everyone lies. 1. I never said sex was a bad thing, I said porn is a bad thing.

    2. You really think this well help sales on the Playstation 3? No it won't something like this would actually kill the Playstation 3 because parents will no longer buy the console for their kids and more kids play games nowadays than adults do.

    3. I agree that some things can be tasteful but next to everybody thinks that the only way to do it is to have a man or a woman begging for mercy from it.

  • QuantaStarfire

Did anyone else chuckle at the idea of Nintendo allowing porn on their system?

  • Rajolae

I have an insatiable lust for redheads, but Jesus Christ in a chicken basket Faye Reagan is ugly as hell. I also hate her since she uses the name Faye Valentine, I get really disappointed when people make threads about porn and use that name when I get in there and see they meant her and not the real one from Cowboy Bebop.

  • Desanvium

You know what...I'm with Sony on this one...leave porn the hell off the ps3. Keep it on the PC where it belongs.

    Desanvium

  • bobafett356

@spinning_piledriver: If they're smart enough to get past parental controls on ps3, something tells me they would be able to do it on pc too.

  • Phil.Collins

oh shit Faye Reagan, she's my favorite pornstar... how did you know, kotaku?

  • threaddew

@MacroPlanet: I don't think most legitimate arguments against porn are against the idea of sexuality, but instead are against the way that 95% of porn is very degrading to women.

  • Comban will Ban you.

@Crash McCloud: Sell your PC while your at it, and if you have a cable TV subscription, sell it.
Some channels show nudity actually, TV? sell it.
Have you ever had sex with your girlfriend in your bed?
    Sell it.
    In the house??
    Sell that shit too.

Now, for things that allow shti on it, sorry, but you are going to have to stop using Toilet Paper, and that Toilet, you know what you are going to be doing with that? Oh yeah, thats right, your selling it.

  • string_theory

    @spinning_piledriver:
    Exactly.

I mean seriously, is it not good enough for them that you cant go 5 clicks on the net w/o having some porn ad shoved in your face?

Is nothing sacred anymore? Stay off my consoles smut peddlers. If i want smut i'll find it myself.

  • Bouncer biggz: nobody's getting

    please NO!

  • Tuor_of_Gondolin

@KillerBee: I understand what you're saying, but I guess I'm not making my point very well.

If companies like Sony and Microsoft want their consoles to be more general purpose and used for all forms of home entertainment, then they need to change the way people think about these devices. Right now, you're absolutely right in that they think of games, and then of kids, and thus things like porn is inappropriate.

Now, I'm not advocating porn per se, but all sorts of things that are associated with mature people seeking home entertainment. If these companies are to achieve their goals, then they have to evolve the perception of what their devices are capable of doing. Providing a safe place for adults to purchase/view porn is a *part* of that. Maybe they should include it as part of some sort of suite of expanded capabilities.

But, again, my main point is that they need to cause the mainstream public's perception to change if they really are serious having their products evolve into a fuller home entertainment experience.

Hope I was more clear this time.

  • Crash McCloud

@Mit: That's not porn by the way, that's just a nude art.

  • Dark_Emerald

@Sarcasmancer: Not everyone torrents everything. And a lot of porn that you torrent probably came from someone who paid for it first. There is absolutely nothing wrong with paying for porn. Especially if it is some high quality stuff.

@OmegaVader: "Porn consistently outsells box office and even video game sales, so they have a significant amount of influence."

The amount of porn released every year would suggest that their development cycle is a lot shorter. That might have something to do with the sales figures. ;)

  • d4rlp3nc1l

First of all, how are they going to determine who is of age or not, there is not a single way that enforces age restrictions, unless that person is in person trying to buy something.

On the internet its as simple as 1 click to look at porn, and to watch m rated videos its retarded too, I always select my age as the oldest, sometime I'm 100 years old, although I'm 21.

When I created my gamertag on live when I was 17, I created it as saying I'm 18. And say your on xbox, every video has a short preview, and lets not forget if you have a younger sibling, as once an item is purchased, all accounts on that xbox can view it.

I have no problem with porn on the xbox or playstation, but that media should only be allowed on a dvd fromat, not digital, end of story.

btw... You really want porn go into the bathroom and film yourself, then watch it, or look at the sunday ads, in the underwear section, your looking at softcore pron. ha ha ha.....

  • Dr Drew In The Hizzaaaay

When I saw Faye Reagan/Valentine I thought somehow Kotaku was cross-promoting with Fleshbot. That would make me happy.

    Not happening. period.

  • lostinseganet

@Sarcasmancer: Porn stars are celebrities. People show their support to see the porn they like with their dollars. Pirates have less say than the people who fork over the moola.

  • Mit

Speaking of porn, just came across this Gawker Artists ad on Kotaku. Seems like some fish need to be deployed, even if it is art _

  • QuantaStarfire

@threaddew: You forgot to mention that the vast majority of porn plots are even thinner than game plots, if they even exist at all.

  • PS3Woolery

    @Jonathan Davies: Excellent reference.

  • OmegaVader

Sony's refusal to allow porn on Betamax was part of the reason if failed. Porn consistently outsells box office and even video game sales, so they have a significant amount of influence.

That said, though, I doubt any of the console manufacturers would be willing to do it when video games still get so much flak from parents and family-value organizations.

@tobybologna: He is, undoubtedly, a virgin whom has never had a girlfriend, I would not doubt his age. He also probably has a porn addiction. He is trying way too hard to be anti-porn in an attempt to make one think he has a girlfriend and has sex with said girllfriend.

  • eviladrian

Yeah, because your wife doesn't hate your xbox enough already, now it shows porn ads when you turn it on.

  • Mike Newlad

@NeVeRMoRe666: PS3 has had free porn for years, so I doubt having the option yo buy it will go down too well. Oh and can you imagine your gamertag status "Watching Midgets Suck Clowns 6"

  • Togala

  • DrunkAus

@Showmeyomoves!: Well yes that is a useful feature.

@Coollead: Yea but that was a game and a shit one at that tbh, can you really see Nintendo officially supporting porn (The Adult Channel for example) on their 'family console'? I think not, homebrew is Vivids only hope for some form of integration on the Wii, in fact wasn't there a Wiibrator homebrew app? That shit was hilarious.

Openly supporting porn even with all the right parental controls isn't something that any current game console wants to do really, while some money could be made off of it, the amount of negativity wouldn't be worth it in the long run imo.

  • NeVeRMoRe666

Uh-oh, I smell an arms race akin to betamax. Whoever scoops up this deal first, be it xbox or Sony or...um, the wii? is going to win the console war pants down.

  • worsethannormal

@d4rlp3nc1l: that's where parents come in. They can set parental controls and lock the system with a password, kinda like your cable box.

    worsethannormal

  • InvaderPhlegm

@Crash McCloud: Well I'm 38, and I prefer my fiance, who does not mind watching a TV screen with people screwing their girlfriends while I'm screwing her. She also doesn't mind blindfolds, handcuffs, video cameras and full-sized mirrors while we do it.

See, that's the cool thing about living in a free society, there is room for all types of POV.

I say if Vivid wants to bring adult entertainment to PSN, then Sony should let them - it's not like anyone is actually buying many games on PS3 anyway.

In a day an age when the vast majority of gamers are adults in the first place (the mean age for gamers being between 24 and 36), Sony stands to make far more money on PSN by having adult films there, than by not.

Meanwhile, the idiots at Microsoft have proven themselves to be as prudish as The Inquisition. Vivid could pay Microsoft millions to put adult entertainment on LIVE, and Microsoft would still turn them down. And just like with blu-ray, adult entertainment would become a major selling point for the system. Matter of fact, because of the universal nature of pornography and humanity's natural propensity to gravitate to anything relating to sexuality, I'd go so far as to say, that adult entertainment on PS3 would be a much larger selling point than bluray ever was.

If Sony wants to turn away the extra revenue, especially after spending years putting their company in a fiscal sinkhole, I guess they can. After all, after already throwing away billions on PS3, it is not like Sony does not need the money anyway.

    InvaderPhlegm

  • nathanst

Will we get a game where we fight Faye Reagan's genital warts?

They should call it "Cryosurgeon MD: Vegas Nights" Edition.

  • zeroknight

@Desanvium: I have three words for you...integrated web browser.

It can already be accessed via a network connection on the console.

  • doughboyx

    Wow. Just wow.

    doughboyx

  • zeroknight

@Crash McCloud: your 2nd point is a little flawed. Parents by PC's and/or let them use it as much if not more than consoles. The same precautions would need to be put in place to place to access the material.

Besides, you can go on your PS3 web browser and visit any porn site you want if the settings aren't in place.

This whole argument is about the sale of porn digitally and not the more easy methods of sticking in a dvd or blu-ray or even using the console's web browser.

In short, they can get it if they wanted regardless of this outcome.

  • Rususeruru

@pandafresh: I'm from the future. Tragically no one will pay attention to actual porn being available. It's a catch 22, they'd have to admit to actually having used it to prove it.

    j/j

In all seriousness I don't think this will happen... in America.

  • Grooveraider

    @sirspankalot:
    Ditto, Ditto.

  • SuprShin

Oddly enough I have to say no here! Besides I can look at enough free porn on my PC, so why should I pay for it on consoles? .

  • C_MaN15

@NeVeRMoRe666: That comment made me lol, good job.

  • lineypi

@zeroknight: Mm, but in none of the present ways of getting porn are Sony seen to be supporting the industry. If however Sony does make adult videos available through its store then it WILL be seen as supporting it. I think that would be what changes parents' opinions of the console.

However it will just end up coming down to communication and marketing. If Sony is able to communicate how well they will block youths from seeing the porn and are select enough in their marketing to only target adults then they should be able to pull this off.

*How* they will stop children from being able to access the porn is kinda beyond me, but I'm pretty confident that they wouldn't go ahead with this deal if they couldn't think of a good way to make it work.

  • C_MaN15

I don't really know much about the general way most people go about getting porn, but does anyone really ever pay for porn anymore?

  • wanion

@Mit: I don't like the tone of those quotation marks, young man. When I was 13, my mom never bought the "it's not porn, it's art" line, either. Me and Larry Flynt took her to court. We lost.

@Crash McCloud: I had to log on after I noticed you were on my friend's list for some reason.

  • SacGamer

@DSveno: This. Free stuff always pales in comparison.

  • Mit

Yes, it's not "porn". Yes, it's "art".

However, if I was 13 years old, my mother damn well wouldn't approve of me viewing that. There's also been less-risque stuff that's been fished before.

  • wanion

@Crash McCloud: Yeah, just because a woman is naked, and apparently spattered with the Miami Vice color scheme, doesn't make it fish-worthy. Unless you're into that.

  • Turambar: B> Selvaria Body Pillo

I've always found it kind of interesting the kind of reputation porn and sex seems to have developed, particularly in relations to our "pure" children.

The idea of privacy within a home, that is having your own space, your own room, is a fairly recent one. Relative to the length of history, it wasn't that long ago that the average family still slept together in a common room, children with their parents. And I'm fairly sure people back then still had sex as well.

I don't mean that they were exhibitionists back then, but the children must have been aware from a fairly young age of the concept of sex, as vague as their knowledge of it is. So how did we arrive at where we are today.
