Bobby Kotick Wanted To Take The Fun Out Of Making Video Games

10:30PM September 15, 2009 | Luke Plunkett

You’d be forgiven for thinking that the above headline is taking a liberty or two with a comment from Activision boss Bobby Kotick. Nope. Those words are straight out of the man’s mouth.

Speaking at the Deutsche Bank Securities Technology Conference in San Francisco yesterday, Kotick said, “The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games.”

Think he knows people outside the room will be reading this kind of stuff? Course he does. He just doesn’t care.

It’s funny, it looks like an Onion article or some sort of parody of the man. But considering how much of a douche the man can be, and how much ho loves whoring and bleeding franchises dry, it doesn’t surprise me.

Still, there’s good to come of it. At last Guitar Hero gets released in my country. Unlike Rock Band.

“At last Guitar Hero gets released in my country.”

You say that like it’s a good thing…

Story telling and emotional resonance is much more that facial expressions. I suppose he also subscribes to the train of thought that “better graphics mean the game will be more fun.”

His idiocy isn’t any move evident than in his attempt to remove the fun from making video games. The more fun you’re having doing something, the more passion you have for it. You think a game developer is going to be working their hardest if they don’t want to come to work for fear of the economic downturn or if they can’t wait to get out of bed, express their ideas and work on something they’re passionate about?

The more I hear from him, the stupider he sounds.

I struggle to find reasons not to hate this man I have never met.

Hey! Making games is meant to be fun

Lots of hours, bad job security, but fun and passionate. Sad devs = boring game
