Conan O’Brien Tests His Sobriety With The Beatles: Rock Band
Tonight Show host Conan O’Brien took The Beatles: Rock Band for a spin during last night’s episode, showing just what a gifted fake musician he is. Of course, he had a little help from his friends.
Dhani Harrison, son of The Beatles’ George Harrison and The Beatles: Rock Band consultant, was a guest on last night’s show, a rare Tonight Show video game promotional appearance, but one that may offer some insight into how well Harmonix’s new game will fare with the public. It seemed to fare alright with Conan and the boys, as shown in the clip below.

Look it's RIchard Lewis! He's so old and Jewey! Can't wait to see him on Curb Your Enthusiasm this season.
Wait, he's the focus of this video right?
ctorrans
@khainegow: SERVES Y'ALL FURRINERS RIGHT, NOT LIVIN' IN U.S. AMERICA
@Kanji08: Thats Conan for you.
wait didnt kotaku say a few days ago that Paul and Ringo hadnt played this yet and Dhani just said the opposite???
@khainegow: Hahah, Luke promoted this.
I feel you, though. It's alone out here in the country of Not-USA
i remember an episode of Late Night he had the guys in the office were playing Rock Band and Conan would come in with a real guitar and asmall amp and start playing the song and getting in front of the scree. fuckin hilarious
Yikes. Did anyone else feel awkward watching this? He kept talking about Easy and Hard Modes and playing Guitar Hero alone in his basement.
Kanji08
Man, he looks just like his father.
I didn't realize he was so involved in video games. I'm impressed. Glad to see so many people associated with the Beatles, both personally and professionally, helped make this game.
I wouldn't mind picking this up some day, but man--what I really want is that box set. Anyone get any of the newly remastered CD's yet?
@khainegow: :(
@khainegow: Plox
EA's gotta love the constant Guitar Hero plugging during its new Rock Band release. :^)
Kobun
@khainegow:

@khainegow: this
@khainegow: Here here!
Masonvrocks
He played drums in the first two Guitar Hero games?
Kotaku should be obliged to add a tag such as AMERICA ONLY to anything with a Hulu vid.
khainegow
@Foppemoa: The NBC linked worked fine for me.
"We're sorry, currently our video library can only be streamed within the united states. For more information on Hulu's international availability bla bla bladibla"
/shakes fist
Foppemoa
My sobriety was tested with Beatles: Rock Band today. It failed gloriously. Excuse me while I watch Yellow Submarine with rhe children.
Longaway
@That mop mutant from NES.: I don't know if I'd call him a shredder, but he plays some mean ass rockabilly. I love it and I wish he would play more on his show.
liquidnumb
The irony being that Conan is one of the meanest shredders on a real guitar. He ALWAYS has a guitar with him wherever he goes.
UUUUUghhhhh Canada + Hulu = Frustration, so much frustration!
Greg Rassam
That picture is hilarious.
Luckily I PVR'd it so I'll have to make sure I watch this particular episode... stupid Canada and it's lack of Hulu.
@Archaotic: I remember it well, strike beard and singing "sabotage" like edith bunker...
monkeysaresilly
@D0RC: 360. They show a 360 copy before Dhani comes out, and the 'saving' message right as they restart the song shows it's for 360.
craigbezzle
@TriplEEE13: I'm sure you're aware that the first two GHs were sans drums, right?
@liquidnumb: Yeah, maybe not a shredder, but Conan's actually a pretty good musician. :)
@Anarchist_Gamer: No, he knew what he was talking about.
TriplEEE13
@Oscar_Explosion: Nah, I think mostly no one cared.
@ctorrans: Curb is the greatest show of all time...ever.
Are they playing it on the Wii or 360? I know it can't be on the PS3, they never show anyone playing games on the PS3 in shows like these.
D0RC
@ctorrans: The episode was pretty bad except for Richard Lewis' interview where he mostly talked about his penis, and then Dhani was pretty cool too. Everything before was boring, even kate beckinsale's hotness couldn't save it.
@khainegow: I'll just leave this right here.
@InsidiousTuna: WE DON'T TAKE KINDLY TO YER KIND 'ROUND 'ERE!
Ouch; Harmonix can't be happy how many times the fucker dropped the "Guitar Hero" name.
craigbezzle
@bakagaijin: I really want the mono versions of the albums through Sgt Pepper, but apparently you can only get them in a ridiculously priced $300 box set and not separately. Very lame, but I really want those.
Wow, was the kid in the Shrek themed get out and get execise advertisement before the video runs playing a Sega Nomad? It looked like the largest handheld system I've seen in years.
so nobody else noticed that there are 3 guitarist on screen but only 2 tracks playing?
@tralfaz23: Yep. During the writers' strike.
@Kobun: EA makes the peripherals for Rock Band. MTV Games publishes Rock Band. Harmonix develops Rock Band.
EA has jack all to care about, really. Activision's publishing competitor/equivalent is MTV Games.
@Greg Rassam: UUUU!
dibbitydan
@Kanji08: I think Harrison mixed up Guitar Hero and Rock Band a few times, because he mentioned playing the first two GHs in his basement but made the motion of playing drums. A strange interview, considering all we know of the company and people and deals he mentions.
I hope this does well. Yes, I'm a Harmonix fanboy - since Frequency.
@InsidiousTuna: is that a new kind of furry? Furriners?
@shredmanifesto: Hates LA perhaps... doubtful the whole state.
MrKlorox
@artofwar420: Hear hear!
MrKlorox
@Keeb13r: Because there were 3 guitarists in the Beetles.
AkumaX
@Keeb13r: Iron Maiden cover band?
So glad he went to Conan instead of Fallon.
Why are there 3 guitarists?
Keeb13r
Gotta love Conan.
You can tell the guy hates California though.
Now @Kenny: Mmmmm, I love colons! ... He ain't hurtin' nobody..
@thesircuddles:
Pender is what does it for me.
LaneWinree
F*** Hulu
stalin23
@Keeb13r: i think one is just signing and the guitar is just there.
maybe
@Kobun: I noticed this, too. I kept wondering if he forgot it was Rock Band. The way Press works nowadays, I can't believe that no one was there prepping him before-hand, asking him to say Rock Band as many times as he could. Someone had to be there to yell at him back stage. (Although does anyone yell at Dhani Harrison?)
Maybe he secretly wishes it was a Guitar Hero game instead and couldn't control himself. :P
Either way, very, very odd.
@supakame: This I know; but to the layman, Guitar Hero vs. Rock Band means just that--nearly every one of my friends who plays either game has no idea that Rock Band and GH1/2 were made by the same company. No idea.
craigbezzle
@khainegow: Yes, because it is too much trouble to see the gigantic HULU logo on the embed, pretty much telling you not to click it.
MrKlorox
@fearing: I don't understand why they can't remix the stereo versions from the masters to sound like a dual-channel form of the mono version?
MrKlorox
@Kanji08: Oh well. Nobody cared because Harmonix made the name famous.
MrKlorox
@Go Go Gadget: Gizmo: This song is so appropriate and awesome. This song while making fun of America in some ways, pumps me up about being one.
Bannana Stand CEO
@monkeysaresilly: so, a perfect cover then, eh?
MrKlorox
@khainegow: Not like you missed much this time.
Bannana Stand CEO
@ctorrans: Oh man, he's on this episode? I'll have to check it out.
I bet he's wearing black!
MrKlorox
@Anarchist_Gamer: I'm pretty sure TriplEEE13 was being sarcastic
Bannana Stand CEO
@craigbezzle: Guitar was originally made by the people from Harmonix, so while it might be confusing (since it's Rock Band, not Guitar Hero) his comments were still reasonable.
supakame
@Oscar_Explosion: A stupid limitation of the game itself. Perhaps in the next full RB game. I wanna use two drum kits at once for a full 8 pad, two kick set.
Is nobody going to mention three mics? The answer is no because it was mentioned a while back.
MrKlorox
@ctorrans: Wonder if he was thinking "This is the interview from hell."
I don't think it could've gotten any easier for Conan! No crazy simultaneous notes, just 3 buttons 1 after the other. The guy on the right must have been playing on Medium, and then Dhani was probably playing Hard. Don't know why they gave Conan a mic when he was already so thrown off with the guitar!
I hate that I can't escape the promotion for this game! It's pretty good from what I've played of it, but it's another RB game at its core. I'd love to see this kind of promotion for a brand new original game, like Brutal Legend, for instance! Will I get this new Beatles game? If my parents let me, or I find an apartment or somewhere with space. Or I get a lot more money! I probably need a lot more friends to play this with! Most games I only play by myself (I still play online with people, but rarely with people in the same room).
@artofwar420: Why? Have you even watched Fallon? His show isnt that bad.
I love Conan but I don't get the problems people have with Fallon, his skits kinda suck but he's good at interviewing and is obviously finding his niche.
@MasterNinja: Maybe he just played drums in his mind! Or he came up with the prototype for the drums, and sent it to Harmonix! And they used that as the first RB drums!!
@stalin23: once again hulu screwed us over EH...
@PSWii2008:
Dhani's definitely playing on expert, not hard.
Quazifuji
@bakagaijin: Got them in the same trip to the mall to get Beatles Rock Band- listening to them right now, actually (very Beatle-y day for yours truly). I haven't had the chance to really sit down and listen to them all yet, but I like what I've heard thus far. I opted for the stereo set, but I may download the mono at some point for the sake of comparison.
FaustianSlip
@RoFFL3s: Mexico too :(
@stalin23: As a USA citizen, I will not watch Hulu videos out of principle. It goes against everything the Internet is about to region ban like that, in my opinion.
Zunnoab
DOESN'T WORK OUTSIDE OF USA!
@Kyosuke_Nanbu: he just isnt funny to most people. may be a generational gap issue like with conan and leno. i wouldnt be surprised if fallon keeps a decently strong younger audience.
i dont think fallon will ever grow on me considering ive never found leno funny and have pretty much always stuck to conan.
GODDAMIT HULU.
I NEED SOMETHING TO WATCH, THE MOOSE OUTSIDE MY WINDOW ARE GOING TO FLORIDA FOR FALL VACATION.
InHumanGamer
@MrKlorox: Well, except for him randomly inserting "Archie!" into the lyrics.
Suzaku
@Zunnoab: It's not Hulu's fault. It's all because of international copyright laws.
Suzaku
@ahasler10092: Yeah, Pender is just singing and miming the guitar. I guess they wanted the "full band" effect. :\
@orijimi: Carson Daily's new format is actually pretty decent. Takes away the horrible monologues and bits he did and just replaces it with on site interviews and music shows. Not great, but way better.
Fallon still sucks, though.
@Kyosuke_Nanbu:
You ssaid it yourself. Why even argue
CHEEZCOLA
@kingsfall: He really should have gone to Carson Daly. /sarcasm
orijimi
@craigbezzle: Dhani actually mentions each GH game specifically (as GH 1 and 2); doesn't say anything about 3 and onward. His short explanation of rights and whatnot what pretty easy to understand. :\
@RoFFL3s: Not as much Hulu screwing people as a bunch of regulatory laws and stuff.
Shadowmist
Oh man i missed Dhani Harrison!
@Kyosuke_Nanbu: I think its because conan is sooo much better than fallon. I like Fallon in his own way, but going from Conan to Fallon..is like going from Best Buy to a garage sale.
khuntilla
Cant access from Japan here.
ye0073
Conan's rendition of Edith Bunker singing Beastie Boys Sabotage still wins the internet.
