Eve Online: Dominion Coming This Winter
Developer CCP sets its sights on redefining EVE Online’s end game in EVE Online: Dominion, the 11th free expansion for the massively-multiplayer space sim, due out in winter 2009.
While work continues on the eagerly anticipated Walking in Stations update for EVE Online that will introduce avatars to the mix (recently renamed Incarna), EVE’s 11th free update will be the newly announced Dominion. Dominion is all about the end game, or as CCP puts it, “Dominion is all about ownership-how you conquer and hold space, how you hold sway over fellow capsuleers and how you wage war against any who stand in your way. How do you make a name for yourself in a universe of 300,000 other players?”
The update will feature a more dynamic alliance combat system, allowing for more tactical strategy to be utilised in combat, a direct result of player feedback on the current state of the game.
Dominion will also bring enhanced social networking features to EVE Online to help foster social interaction, epic pirate mission arcs (arrrrr!), and more updates to the graphics engine, doing for planets what Apocrypha did for asteroids.
CCP promises to reveal much more about the expansion in the coming months. For now, keep your eyes on the official EVE Online: Dominion website.

@RevProtocol: Because in my opinion, a good game is one which throws you into the action from the word go. I can't think of another MMO that doesn't do this.
Its not that I've only played for a bit I've done like 3 of the free trials because I would love to play a good space MMO. I met a guy on IRC, got the free trial and he sent me an absolute ton of ISK to get me started. But despite that I still wasn't really doing anything for an age. It takes far, far too long to get set up in EVE and it's so, so easy (from what I hear) to lose it all.
I dislike that when I die I lose my entire ship and everything that was in it. I dislike that combat essentially boils down to auto-attack. That the vast majority of the game, be it learning skills, mining, travelling, fighting etc. requires virtually no human input whatsoever.
@dormin: Unfortunately, I don't think our Icelandic pals at CCP will ever team up with cellphone companies, in the way that WoW has with the recent armory app, which is sad considering how much a mobile skill updater would help bring to the game.
I like how they are bringing up endgame a lot... we've always had lvl 5 missions which are a lot like raids, but the changes to how alliances/corps control space and themselves (hopefully they'll fix the one-button end-corp nonsense that destroyed BoB).
What'd make me happy is if they implemented a super-space-highway where there'd be a set of super stargates (only in hi-sec of course) that would take you, let's say, 30 jumps from Caldari space to middle of nowhere space and then you get off the highway and just use the normal stargates from there. Kind of like how we use normal interstates and highways irl. Just my brainstorming.

@Erignamatic:
First rule of EVE: don't trust anyone

@Mancomb Seepgood: I certainly understand where you're coming from. There is an aspect to EVE that seems somewhat... boring, when looked upon from the surface. You said that haven't played in a long while, and you didn't play for very long, though, so I wonder why it is you feel like you can state confidently that the game is unsatisfactory?
It appears from your admission of having little experience with the game, and your adherent dislike for it, that you crave a more instant and immersive experience from a game, and that's fine. Some people are more patient with their games, some people just like action.
Don't worry, a short attention span is nothing for which you should be ashamed. Probably.
@Mephistopheles: for many players, you really can't get a great experience with EVE unless you join a corp and do group stuff together
So, in other words, they're giving over-agressive people the chance to treat fellow "capsuleers" in a way they would never have the spine to do in real life?
Played this game for over 4 years, don't miss it even one iota. These recent announcements actually make me MORE glad I don't play anymore.

Sounds like Dust 514 is the perfect game for all the "it's too boooooring" whiners in this thread.
Honestly, don't play it if you don't like it. There are 18,000 more sets of rainbow armor in WoW, if that's more your style.
Maybe you should have tried pvp...
@Jon: I haven't played it since about November. I'm sure it's still craptastic though.
@aZn sensaZn: Yeah but thats the thing... you don't so much as play Eve as you do sit there while it plays itself.
@Shaun Keogh: Except none of those are legitimate concerns. While the overuse of text windows and general lack of gameplay in Eve are legitimate ones.
And it's not at all diverse. The only goal in the game is to make as much money as possible which can quite easily be achieved by mining and legitimately scamming people.
Halo is rubbish but at least you're involved when you play it.
@Jon: I played a little bit way back and am considering getting back into it. I could definitely use some advice :)
After the news of the console tie-in...I'm getting back into Eve.

@Mancomb Seepgood: Halo: just a stupid game in which i shoot things with silly gun
wow, a silly game where i press a button and hit an elf with an axe
Forza, a stupid game where i crash a lot because its hard
look, we can all make derogatory comments about a game, dosen't mean we care what you think when you clearly know so little about such a diverse game.
Shaun Keogh
Wake me when they make it fun.

Anyone who fancies giving EVE a go, hit me up. I play under the name Theo Samaritan a lot of the time, and will happily help anyone set up.
@Mancomb Seepgood:
You need to actually play Eve.
@Mancomb Seepgood: "First 5 minutes? It takes at least 20 to get through the stupidly long character creation."
Try it now, it hasnt taken that long to make a charatcer since they did the complete overhaul in may.
Now, you may continue your trolling. Most people dont give a shit =3
@Mephistopheles: Fans would say this is a feature, not a limitation. It weeds out those with short attention spans or slow reactions. Complex reaction, not twitch/click.
When I try a game that is beyond me, I either suck it up and get better or hold my hands up and admit it got me beat. I don't fling it down and condemn it for being too complicated. Well I might, but I'll admit the truth in half an hour when I'm not so annoyed.
I say this as someone who's been repeatedly dropped from organisations within the game for not paying enough attention. A 50+ mil skillpoint loner. But at least I try and I don't claim it's ludicrously complex. And the interface is anything but spartan. I thought you just said it was complex. Unhelpful is accurate though.

@Ghostradomus: Yes, I do enjoy life. Probably because life is less tedious than Eve.
@Driadon, the little mutant that could: First 5 minutes? It takes at least 20 to get through the stupidly long character creation. The game is dump and even more of a "lifer" game than WoW. End of.
@Vecha: Tired of America's Solution to Health Care.: Amen.
Also I forgot hitting the mining laser button and sitting there for 30 minutes while I orbit a rock, occaisionaly shooting at it with a laser (that somehow extracts the ore perfectly from said rock and transports it into my hold in about half a second).
Oh and I also forgot clicking on the weapon laser button and sitting there for 30 minutes while I auto-attack. Certainly sounds like fun to me!
@Kougeru: Twitter on phones is basically that, but for Twitter. Facebook does the same.

@Mancomb Seepgood:

@Stix1313:
I've been in your shoes. Perhaps you've forgotten since last time -- since you were jobless, your girlfriend left you and your account only had a few days left, your parents are begging you to go to open the door, but you're unable to leave. Your refrigerator doesn't have anything but Chef Boyardee ravioli and Powerade. You haven't slept for days and you can't hear yourself think. You're crying but you wont step away from your computer for anything but further nourishment.
Yes. I've been in your shoes.
@dormin: that most people don't use their phones or want to use their PHONES for stuff like that

@Mephistopheles:
Of all the criticisms I've heard of EVE, this one is the most accurate. Mind you I'm a three-year veteran corporate CEO, but I agree that its interface needs work.

@Stix1313: If you value your life, I'd stay away.

@dormin: That's definitly something that would make it a lot easier to deal with the tough progression system in Eve, but AFAIK CCP doesn't allow anything other than the game client to do such tasks. I've always wondered why they haven't just come up with something secure themselves, but I'm pretty sure somebody has asked them before.
They probably answered too.
i really wanna test drive this game on my macbook pro but fear I will become addicted. Any thoughts on whether I should try it out?
Stix1313
@Driadon, the little mutant that could:
If the first 5 mins feels like 30...I don't think i'd want to go any further...
A friend and I were discussing recently how tragic it is that eve, the MMO we hold the most respect and admiration for, is also the MMO that we have the smallest desire to pay 15 bucks to play. Then we realized what would make us play:
Mobile notifications/remote control. Obviously I don't want the whole game to be playable from an iPhone, but I would flip if you could receive corporation/alliance notifications, send and receive eve mail, manage what skills you are training, and buy/sell on the station you left your pod in.
I'm sure we aren't the first to think this..am I missing something or is this a perfect idea?
Hmm....I wonder how much this is going to change Wormhole Space. My corp is going to be setting up a POS come winter and I don't want the logistics we have so far to be thrown out the window.
Driadon, the little mutant that could
@Mancomb Seepgood: Oh, cool, someone who played 5 minutes of the game. Lets all listen to him, guys! He knows everything!
Driadon, the little mutant that could
@Mancomb Seepgood: And this time you won't have to pay for it! I wonder if you enjoy life.
Ghostradomus
I seriously can't wait!~ This is gonna be awesome, I just hope I'll still have a subscription! :)
Also, WAR!
Yey! I can't wait to stare at hundreds of new windows filled with text just so I can hit the auto pilot button and wait for 30 minutes before I can stare at yet more windows filled with text!
All right, I've decided to try the trial. I'm glad it's available on Mac. Gonna start it once I can get my hands on a copy of Snow Leopard...
I've always thought the EVE concept to be really fascinating, but when it came to user base and execution...it left something to be desired i suppose. I can just imagine how fun an MMO like this would be if it was hugely successful. (My ship would be the Outlaw Star >.>)
I've always been interested in the idea of Eve. Unfortunately, no matter how many free trials I take for a spin, the game never comes across as anything other than a ludicrously complex niche product with an unhelpfully spartan interface.
