Export LEGO Rock Band Tracks To Rock Band

@spiderweb1986: It's not how the export key on RB1 worked. If you look at the wording in the article it sounds like it works more like the RB1 -> RB2 import (where you buy an export key from PSN or LIVE) than being on pack the manual (like AC/DC was). Of course I could be wrong.

I won't reply to presto117 directly, as I'd hate to actually promote someone who resorts to name calling, but, just to point out:

"Like Rock Band 2's import feature, there'll be a small fee."

That's what I read, and that's what I'm basing my rent/export strategy off of.

Well the size of the import file from Rock Band 1 was like 7.5 GBs and I don't think the Wii supports SD Cards above 4 GBs (might be wrong) so it may not be a Nintendo-hating move but a lack of real storage system move.

I wonder if export was always planned for this game, or if it was added after the initial "WTF" flap this game received upon its announcement?

Because I don't know about everyone else, but track export is the ONLY reason I'm moving this game onto my "day one must buy" list. Before it wasn't even on my radar...there was no way I was buying it. Its amazing how that one bullet point equals instant sale.

@-Skyline-: Voted Crecente 12': Uh, Gamestop doesn't mark the codes on used copies with markers. I know this because I got Track Pack 2 and AC/DC used and both had functional codes.

@Gaunt: In order to counter this, they will do one of the following:

1) Implement a one-off code so that only one export can be performed per disc.

2) Charge a one-time fee to purchase a "key" to enable the export.

The advantage the HMX has with LEGO that they didn't have with the first Rock Band is that they can build the exportation feature into the disc, which gives them more flexibility in implementation.

Uh, hang on, folks. Harmonix has NOT confirmed any of this. Wired just has an anonymous tip from a "closely placed source". That's hardly reliable.

I'd love for it to be true, and it probably IS true, but they may still be working out the deals with the record companies. It could fall through, which is why they haven't announced yet.

If I can rent it and pay a $5 or so important fee, I'm down instantly. However, if there is a per-game specific code in addition to the $5 important fee, than I'm a little more hesitant.

I'm gonna be honest, I didn't know this game had anything 'new' on it. Pretty cool that it does though.

@Benguin: With the Track Packs the code is printed on the back of the manuals. Buy it used and Gamestop covers up the code with a black marker since it's already used. No import fee required.

@BahamutNeo: no. The game has technical features that DO NOT EXIST IN RB2. It's not speculation. It's pretty simple to understand. One of the key features of TBRB and the songs themselves are multi-part harmonies and as you may have noticed, that's something that RB/RB2 doesn't do.

This is excellent news. I'm not really that keen on the whole Lego business, although I'll end up playing it because my band are. Exportable tracks are great though.

@SacGamer: Wikipedia has this on their RBN page, " While Harmonix has not ported the tools to work with the PlayStation 3, artists that create Network songs need only "to do some paperwork" to allow the songs to be ported to the PlayStation Network; a similar title patch is expected to occur for Rock Band 2 on that system." so, hope exists for Ps3 owner, but that hope is Slim.

Well, this is the main point of the RB Network: artists encode and upload themselves the songs.
So, uh, yes, there is a reason why it's not on PS3: you can't upload anything on the PSN without being all kinds of approved.

I agree on many other points where HMX favors the 360 (timed exclusives in Europe, for example), but for the RBNetwork, it's Sony's lack of solution which is to blame.

@Nudgenudge: HMX is a full blown game studio, not some random guy making games. HMX has no reason for not including the rock band network for the PS3. It's not like the artists code the songs themselves.

@Nudgenudge: I really kind of tune out what is happening in the background unless the song is really slow, my instrument doesn't currently have notes, or I'm not playing. I'm not so completely amazing that I can ignore the note chart. My innate lack of rhythm and timing really forces me to concentrate on the notes.

Reading one of the reviews it seems that each song has a custom light show programmed in to the track data. Kinda nifty.

@Invisible-Echidna: I believe you and Nudgenudge probably have the real reason for the lack of import/export capabilities here. Somewhere along the way someone from the Beatles side of things probably made the demand that it be a standalone experience. I know Yoko was heavily involved in the game design process including graphics and song selection. I wonder if perhaps she is the culprit for the import/export predicament?

Go yell at Sony for hating the PS3, not HMX. They do what they can with what they have available.

...but the work done on the Beatles is far more greater than the AC/DC one (which was just a repackaging of the RB1 engine).

I wouldn't switch discs for the songs only... but I will for the songs, the dreamscapes and even the opening cinematic.

@BahamutNeo: The reason for the lack of importability with RB:Beatles has less to do with the licensing and more to do with the changed Harmonix made to the RB engine (multiple vocals, etc.)

And yes Chuffhoncho, that is one of the reasons I like Guitar Hero. I can buy a lot of songs over the course of a year and not worry about hard drive space. And since I like a lot of music, I end up liking most of the songs I buy.

@Ripner: No, that's not how they did it. You imported them off the RB1 disc, and bought a key to unlock them for use in RB2.

I actually wouldn't be surprised if they weren't too worried about people renting the game and importing the tracks anyway. It seems to me like the main appeal is all the Lego-y goodness, not so much the tracks themselves. Importing those over loses that.

@WhiteMage: Yeah that's a cool gimmick - for kids and people who like Legos. But the song selection is unique, and regular Rock Band users don't want to be left out.

@BahamutNeo: If you get The Beatles to say "we'll sign, if you do this, this, and this." You do this, that, and that. They're giving you a master track experience of a game. It's not too much of a bother to switch discs for that, in my opinion.

@SacGamer: If 20 GB isn't enough space to you right now, then 120 GB is still a sizable upgrade. Yeah, it's overpriced, but there are occasional deals (such as using an ECA coupon at Amazon).

@BahamutNeo: I don't do much drumming, so the portable kit isn't a big deal to me. As for the fog/light machine... they actually released that garbage? I never saw it in any stores and figured they smartened up and scrapped the idea. And I doubt the reason why I never saw it was because they were so popular that they hardly stayed on shelves for very long.

Unless they just offered such a limited amount of them that they presented the illusion that they were sold out due to high demand... in which case, well played.

I'm glad Harmonix is changing their tune from the Beatles release. Hearing that the Beatles would not allow me to import or export songs is a deal breaker for me. I canceled my preorder and will now wait for the Beatles to price drop below $15 or for the ability to import/export tracks. I'll keep my Lego preorder though. ^^

I'm glad I'll never have to play as a lego band to play the songs in the game.

However, this presents a problem. Hard drive space. I simply do not have the space for this on my 20 gb drive. This is one reason I love Guitar Hero, I don't have to worry about hard drive space so much.

And until Microsoft offers REAL hard drives at reasonable prices, I see no point in upgrading. 120 GB is not enough space.

Maybe I should just start over and buy these games on PS3. Then I can have all the space I want. But that presents another problem. Harmonix hates the PS3.

I would prefer it the other way around. It would be better to play the cooler songs with a Lego band.

I wasn't going to buy it, but for the ability to export I'm going to buy it and export it to Rock Band2.

By the way, does anyone know how many songs are going to be in the final disc?

I had a relatively small interest in Lego Rock Band, mostly because I hate switching discs. I don't care about the whole "Lego" part anyway.

But I'll definitely be getting this to export the songs.

Awesome news. Looks like I'll be renting LEGO Rock Band, get the export key, export the songs, then send the game back. =)

RB now has 'Feel Good Inc' and will soon have 'Under Pressure' and even more Queen. They just killed every reason to buy GH5. Well player HMX. Dick move, but well played.

But the whole gimmick of Lego Rock Band is the settings, the characters, the events.

Why would we want to swap the songs? Isn't the whole novelty of it the lego bit? If anything, it should be able to read your RB2 and RB songs. Install RB2 to the hard drive, and Lego rock band can read the data and play the songs.

That would make worlds more sense than buying a toy set just for one piece.
