God Of War Collection: Not Until 2010, Europe
Americans love a bit of blood, a bit of grunty men tearing things in twain. So Americans will be getting the God of War Collection in 2009. Europe, though? Home to Greek mythology? Yeah, Europe has to wait.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe have confirmed with VG247 that that “it will not be possible to release the games this calendar year” in the Old World. So it’s January 2010 at the earliest for them.
Got a favourite overseas importer saved in your bookmarks?
Kotaku AU Note: This statement follows on from word from Sony Australia yesterday that were “looking into” bringing the God of War Collection here.

@Lemming: Yeah, I was wondering how long that smart arse comment would take. Very helpful, thank you.
shufflemoomin
@shufflemoomin: True, and on top of that I hate when they translate games in to finnish for example. I always play in english, feels goofy not to.
They have probably to record the voices in HD now.
Importing.....
I've imported more games this gen than in the last few combined.
One more to add on the import pile then :P
@DrunkAus: In this case you wouldn't expect translation to be a problem, because both of these have already been fully translated and available for so long in Europe. It's not like they're adding additional dialogue to either game. Perhaps it's going to take a few months to translate the new Trophy names!
@darkos87: www.videogamesplus.ca or www.dvdboxoffice.com
Pff. Not surprising anymore, just annoying.
But speaking of which, anyone in Germany (or Europe, for what I care) wanna buy my God of War 2 for PS2? I'm selling a big game collection soon.
good site to import guys?
I missed both of these on PS2 (I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! Please don't hurt me!). Having waited this long, I suppose that I can wait a couple more months - especially since I wasn't expecting the opportunity to play them on my PS3 at all until just recently...
Meh, my local store imports games from US all the time
Brennzky
To the nearest importer for cheaper and quicker games.

Have fun ;)
@shufflemoomin: Learn to use google, maybe? :)
Lemming
Any chance of further comment from them given that localisation or third party developers can't be blamed for the delay this time?
Lemming
@ThursdayNext: In some territories, such as Scandinavia, most if not all gamers 10 and over will speak good enough English that I'm sure they'd rather sidestep the translation crap and get it quicker and cheaper.
shufflemoomin
Why can't they just release the US version in the English speaking countries of Europe? Or 'PAL territories' to be more accurate.
That way us English speaking folks in those regions don't have to wait while its being translated, or better yet translate the game WHILE its being made, instead of waiting until after it's gotten it's US release.
Anyway, good thing the PS3 is region free :P
@(Zombie) Neteher: And where in the great, wide internets would one be finding such a place as this VG+, hmm? :)
shufflemoomin
This makes me laugh. Not because i'll be back in the States before years-end, and i'll be able to play it before the Europeans. But because how goofy the whole system of releasing games on the same platform in different regions can be. Even when they speak the same language.
I know there are still localization processes in which i'm barely knowledgeable in, but still, it cracks me up.
Import it is, then.
@JahB: I was just quoting from Sony's Bumper Book of Excuses. Where Europe is involved translation is always excuse number 1.
It's only not possible because SCEE does not believe in themselves.
Also, this would seriously lower their amount of nappy-time, and if they do that everyone will be grumpy.
Plus they hibernate from mid-September until sometime late spring.
To the Ebay!
You bastards.
Quick team! To the Play-Asia-mobile!
Sony can't blame this on third party developers this time.
Europe is plastered with shop capable of importing it. Due to the weak Dollar and Sony's idea about $1 being 1€ it might even be cheaper as an import.
@ThursdayNext: the localisation for both games is already done, they both are available in the PAL territories...
Maybe they decided to actually spend time on the cover for the European release.
Meh.
Give me my Team Ico collection Sony!
Antihippy
@meowmixx: Yeah, VG+ is great for importing, especially when you can pre-order things and still get the bonuses.
@JahB: "Blah blah...translations...blah blah...distribution rights...blah blah...blame the publisher, not Sony..." oh wait, hang on, Sony is the publisher of this one.
Ok Sony, your move, who's fault is this delay then?
SCEE strikes again.
/imports
Importing will be quicker and cheaper then. SCEE are just a total waste of time and space.
It's a good thing I import nearly everything from Canada, otherwise I'd be a bit upset.
meowmixx
GODFUCKINDAMMIT! why do we always get shafted??
GoW has already been localized, there should be absolutely no hold up there. thank god that the PS3 is region free
everyone talks about importing the game, but a ps3 does NOT have to be regionfree. There are rumors that Bayonetta won't be regionfree and since ps2 games are not regionfree, I can imagine that this collection-edition won't be either.

@Henkiebob: Whether or not you can trust e-retailers isn't really an issue, at least if you use reputable ones. I've ordered tons of stuff from overseas and never had any problems. I've used Amazon, Play.com and Playasia.com, the last one especially to import something that was only sold in the US (that being the PC version of Ghostbusters).
In all the cases delivery took as long as they promised it would and the package was brought to my doorstep. I thought I would've had to pick Playasia's package up from customs, but I was pleasantly surprised when it came straight to my mailbox.
Just make sure to check the total order price from a few places before ordering. Some places might have ridiculously expensive delivery rates, while others charge minimal fees - if anything.
@meowmixx:
What would the world be without Canada? More expensive, that's for sure. You guys import your games from them, we Americans imprt our (perspiration) drugs from them. Is there anything those Can-adians can't do?
@Brisco_County_Jr: Let me add I no longer hang out with the guy, but I need to point out that he's not the major hurdle SONY need to fix.
One would be universal release dates.
Two would be clamping down on US pirates. How else does it get here?
*sigh*
SONY, why do you and all the major players not realise that by splitting timetables, you encourage piracy of the US ISOs?
(I've known people in my travels who have entire hard drives of games they grab months before they get here. How? SPLIT RELEASES that entice people to pirate. Rock Band was a MASSIVE split, taking a year to get here.)
Damn!! okay all European Gamers who have imported games please listen up!
What site do you use? I've honestly never done it before , because I never really trust it.
Most of my games are US and I always import them... so no worries here... I`m excited for getting my copy of God of War 1 & God of War 2 God of war 1&2 Edition God of War Collection...
kadjin
@Bumbuliuz: I'm surprised you're suprised at this... i mean, it's news when we get something around the same release window as America.... it's a miracle when we get something before them :)
SCEE keeps giving us the middle finger in Europe, no matter how much money we give them. Bast***s
I assume SCEE has its own certification procedure which may have some pretty stringent requirements concerning localisation. A few other releases have been delayed this way too and I suspect its because the original code assumes English, or commits some other stupid localisation error that means it takes a while to push out a fixed and tested version.
DrXym
@Jon: It's not like I need or want it translated. In fact, If I am for some reason unable to play the non-fubar English version, I won't buy it. Everybody learns a second language at school in Europe. Guess what the most popular one is. And besides, they don't need time to translate this. The original God of War games for the PS2 have already been released in Europe and translated into as many languages as needed. If they want to upgrade the sound they just need to recompress the master audio. You don't truly believe they've deleted the original high-quality recordings on a multimillion dollar project, do you?
@Jon: So, we in the UK need to suffer because Belgium haven't updated to 60Hz TVs yet? It's a bit out of order. I honestly think that instead of seperate US only versions, companies should just release an 'English' version in 60Hz. Most of us would be able to play that one quite happily, and the few who are still lagging behind can either get with the times, or just wait longer. Then, release the 'European' version with multi-language and 50Hz support at a later date.
CheekyLee
Well looks like Sony Europe is not getting my money cause I'll just import this.
For crying out loud, the Sony hatred of Europe continues into 2010.
Grrrr!
melonpans
Hrm. It occurs to me that part of the reason the PS3 always seems to be lagging behind the 360 in UK charts, and that we've slipped behind Germany in Europe game sales is because all of us savvy PS3 consumers just import our games from the US.
The same can probably be said of all the rubbish on the DS charts.
@Asbestos_Underwear:
Might? They sell Uncharted 2 preorders here for 64,99-79,99 euros(without extras), while you can import it including shipping for ~50 euros AND have it earlier (US release is the 13th while the EU release is the 23rd).
I'm most likely to get it here as soon as they add it
[vgplus.blogspot.com]
To everyone across the pond saying that its goofy that they are releasing it late in Europe even though they speak the same language, you need to learn your countries again.
Only two countries speak English as a first language here in Europe, that being the UK and Eire. If they are re-recording the voices as well (entirely possible) or even re-translating, then naturally there will be delays.
They can't simply release it in the UK/Eire and call it quits on the rest of Europe, the EU wont allow it anyway.
If they pull the "language translation" card out here, there'll be riots.
The bloody games are already in the various languages.
Just another case of Europe being punished for not being America.
@ithyphallus, lazy beareaucrat: Exactly, this is little but the crappy paper-trail that continues to consume entertainment media - RIGHTS. I still think copyright is important, but it's this kind of B.S. that encourages customers to circumvent the methods of distribution employed by the media corporations. FAIL.
Cjay79
@Brisco_County_Jr: I haven't seen a single torrent for a PS3 game ever. And the god of war collection is for ps3 only
@Kevf: All PS3 games are just region-free, theres no choosing like on the 360 even for the publishers.
So Bayonetta will be the same as any other ps3 game
erm, wow. there really is no legitimate reason to delay this. wasn't one of the perks of blu-ray that it was region-free? so this wouldn't happen? just like how the watchment blu-ray set came with movie + game...on separate discs
ithyphallus, lazy beareaucrat
Europe should be used to this by now, right?
RIGHT?!
CosmicElement
@Jon: Isn't all the voice work already done for two games that came out in Europe on the PS2? Hmm?
@Kevf: The 360 version wont be region free but you can't stop a Region 1 game from being played in a Region 1 area on a PS3.
@DrunkAus: Be translated? your acting like these games haven't come out already.
TylDurden
Region free is a very nice word for these people.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
^
[joking]
sucks though hope u guys get it asap
Bonehead move yet again Sony. Why are you doing this and giving the fanboys more to slam you with?
davidtobin100
@redneon: thx
Looks like SCEA get my money this time... Again.
Strife Fox â€
owned.
kobeashi
Europe must be REALLY far away from Japan.
Shinta
God... damnit Sony aren't Nintendo, why is this happening.
RichardChaos
@Brisco_County_Jr: Even if someone has managed to figure out how to hack a PS3, the cost of BD-R media and a recordable drive outweigh the cost of just importing the games, not to mention the hours it takes to download gigs of data. It's probably not much encouragement for pirates on a budget.
@ithyphallus, lazy beareaucrat: It is region-free thus the option to import the game from anywhere else without having to mod your console.
Region-free =/= simultaneous worldwide release
@BritBloke916: On the IGN interview, the developer mentioned that they were replacing the text fonts and menus to make them more readable on HD screens. I bet you this is the reason for the hold up (they'll have to replace fonts on all PAL languages).
@T-DoggIsTheLick:
Thanks alot for the help appreciate it!
@Sisee: They did mention having to replace the font because it was difficult to read in 720p... I've read comments from some developers mentioning that depending on the game engine, this is no small task. Perhaps that could lead to the hold-up?
How frickin hard can it be. Release all triple A (yes this should be treated as one) and other potential hits simultaneously over the world - the market region delay is so 20th century and should be eradicated as a marketing practice whenever the risks are small enough. Digital distribution is really the final solution for this. Also, it's plain stupid to mess with one of the market regions where the PS3 has a higher ratio of userbase compared to the US. Sure there is a higher complexity in the PAL release but wait releasing it in the US until the European verson is done - and keep a lid on any delays to keep everyone ignorant and happy.
