Grapple Buggy: A New Look At The Xbox Live Indie

We got to go hands on with Xbox Live Indie Games entry Grapple Buggy at E3 this year, a fine buggying session through a lush alien world. At the time, developer Nathan Fouts teased the game’s story.

Now, we’re getting a taste of some of that story, courtesy of a new Grapple Buggy trailer and some of the newly released spoken dialogue. Not a small undertaking for a tiny developer like Mommy’s Best Games, something we weren’t really expecting based on the game’s original teaser trailer.

    @Mentuss:
    Yeah, the gameplay looks interesting, if not a little uninspired, but it certainly has the potential to be fun.

    Might need to mute it though, with that voice acting...

    @diagorus: Most definitely. In like 5 seconds. Hope the music is as good . . .

  • Thut

    It's not too late. You can re-record the voice acting! Craig's list it if the only girl you know is your sister.

    @(Zombie) Goldwings: Love Dust, you can play for hours!

    @(Zombie) Goldwings: Yeah, if Braid and Castle Crashers weren't coming to PSN, I would say that the playing field is starting to level. Should be getting Shadow Complex myself Friday.

    PSN games are one of my favorite things about the PS3.

  • Kobun

    @Mentuss: Yeah, I'm a bit concerned that a haphazard story could end up just bogging down the game, but given the track record, I'll try to remain positive. I gotta say this looks much cleaner than Weapon of Choice. Can't wait for this to come out.

    @(Zombie) Goldwings: I'm pretty sure some things come out a week before for gold users (that may be only demos though), but yeah, even if that is the case with XBLA games, you should be able to pick up Shadow Complex now, it's been out for two.

  • (Zombie) Goldwings

    @I_Hate_This_Place: ... I wish I knew that sooner :/

  • I_Hate_This_Place

    @(Zombie) Goldwings: You don't need a LIVE gold membership to buy Shadow Complex.

  • puffa469

    @diagorus: and thats a good thing.

  • (Zombie) Goldwings

    @Bii Nii Wii Nii: I'd buy Shadow Complex myself, but I can't because I don't want to pay for LIVE (I've used up my free months too) and I do get to try it out from friends house when I'm over.
    Too bad I'm just too busy at work these days :(

    @Mentuss: There's nothing wrong with mouseboobs. In fact we need more :P

  • Mentuss

    While it's certainly nice to see more coming from Xbox Indie Games than twin stick shooter clones, glorified screen savers, and "rumble massagers", I think the dude making this might be better off not concentrating on story and just make a damn fine game.

    It all sounds a bit corny.

  • Mentuss

    @(Zombie) Goldwings: That looks... pretty damn cool.

    Even if it looks a little... Furry. Not that I have anything against the anthropomorphic, but I prefer my humanised animals to be a bit less sexualised... like the Racoons, or Ninja Turtles.

    I mean, Jeebus on a stick, check out the mouseboobs on the website...

    @(Zombie) Goldwings: Well, XBLA has received the short end of the stick compared to PSN for the most part. Castle Crashes, Braid, and Geo Wars was nice, but there wasn't much else to pick up on it (not including ports and remakes like Peggle and Rez HD). I'm glad that 'Splosion Man, Trials HD, and Shadow Complex (and hopefully more titles to come) are finally giving me a reason to pick up some new arcade games.

  • Bii Nii Wii Nii

    @(Zombie) Goldwings: Splosion Man, Trials HD, and the tower defense game that released today is all kinds of awesome too. The tower defense game should have been in TMNT Summer Arcade slot. That along with Splosion Man, Trials HD, MvsC 2, and Shadow Complex makes that buy all 5 "Summer of Arcade" titles, get 800 MS Space Bones deal an obvious no brainer.

    But yeah, looking over the past 2 or 3 months of releases suggests to me, the XBLA is done fucking around. Shadow Complex is the best download game I've played, and I have played a ton of WiiWare and PSN games.

  • magnakaiser

    @diagorus: My sentiments exactly.

  • laser beams

    @diagorus: that's what i'm seeing too. i'm very interested to see how this one turns out :)

  • Oyn: White Knight

    @Anarchist_Gamer: Ohhh come on, it's amusing :)

  • KampfVerein

    Audible yawn.

  • diagorus

    reminds me of master blaster for some reason.

    @(Zombie) Goldwings: For those unaware of Dust's awesomeness.

  • (Zombie) Goldwings

    Other than that ladies voice, It seems like a quirky, fun game.

    I have to say that between this, Shadow complex and Dust, I envy the Xbox 360 owners.
    They might not have that many exclusive games coming out this year, but they're sure getting a bunch of unique XNA titles coming out.

  • Anarchist_Gamer

    I applaud the effort, but it looks like audio atrocity will be getting some new sound files for its database.

  • Nick Freeman

    The change to Xbox Indie games has been great! The prices are MUCH more reasonable and there are TONS of great titles to get. Alchemeist, I Made a Game with Zombies in it (only 80 points), The Wizard's Tower, Avatar Golf, and Kodu are just a few of the good ones. There is so much there for so little. I hope that people keep checking back, and support this!!!!!!

    @(Zombie) Goldwings: Thanks for sharing. I hadn't even heard of this game before.

    @diagorus: I got the same vibe from this. Makes me want to break out the NES.

  • karl_hungus

    @diagorus: its blaster master, not master blaster, by the way.

  • MasterOmega

    Pretty cool to see the Indie games label might be able to garner a bit more interest, getting Kotaku and maybe others to look at, and possibly review the better games there. This is great for developers with talent that are just getting started (or just finishing dealing with the corporate game industry). Please keep this up Kotaku, this is fantastic!!

  • Thanatos

    Awesome looks great but they could've chose a better name.

  • BebopBlue

    @Talryyn: Dust isn't out yet, how have you played it?
