Guild Wars 2: Bringing Art To Life
Most companies wait until the game comes out before they start thinking about releasing an art book. For Guild Wars 2, however, ArenaNet wants to make the art the star.
When I first found out about ArenaNet’s Guild Wars 2 art book being available at PAX, I questioned whether or not it was the right time for such a promotion. Company founder and president Mike O’Brien explains why art is such a huge focus in Guild Wars 2.
“We have the best artists in the industry. I know it sounds like hyperbole, but our artists are winning every industry award here. We have brilliant artists, and that’s why we are featuring the art so heavily”.
You can see this in action in the trailer, first unveiled at GamesCom in Germany, which depicts pieces of concept art coming to life almost seamlessly.
“That’s a theme of Guild Wars 2 – taking this art and bringing it to life.”

This game looks amazing, simply amazing..
and yet, I'm terrified I won't be able to run it on my laptop because of it.. I'm just hoping they pull off another miracle like they did with GW1.
I'm able to play it on the highest settings, and get a solid 30FPS.

@One Man Freak Show: Indeed. And yet, what a disservice to ArenaNet's artists! (not to say that Gears doesn't have quality art, but god-damn this is some beautiful stuff.
All three campaign collector's editions came with art books, and I was always impressed by them. I imagine that this is at least as good, and can see why they'd want to feature it if it is.
Pyrthas
Okay, who else read that as "Gears of War 2" for the first three or so times?
can't wait. woohoo.
@Janxer: I wouldn't mind playing it on mid, or the lowest settings, as long as I have a playable FPS.. the highest settings was just a luxury~ XD
(Survivor) Blyr
@(Survivor) Blyr: Well, judging by the trailer they've put out, it's an evolved GW1 engine, so you should be able to run it with no major hickups. Although, highest settings is doubtful, especially if they plan on making bigger enviroments.
These guys should make t-shirts of this stuff.

CANNOT wait for this game. :D

The trailer was nice, though it didn't show a lot. I'm still interested in this game.
I'm just uncertain about getting it because I never finished Guild Wars, and I don't know if I could bring myself to finish it now. I was thinking about going back to it yesterday, but just lacked the drive to do so.

I have high hopes for this game. I loved Guild Wars and its the only MMO I could ever get into (I even tried WoW on multiple occasions, but it didnt hook me). They have a strong foundation for a WoW killer here- Guild Wars gameplay with general improvements and more player abilities. Add the fact that the artwork is leading the level design, its guaranteed to have great quests.
BUT, will the amazing art of GW2 be able to trump KOTOR? Only time will tell, the next big MMO war is brewing, and no quarter will be given.
Is there any word on a release date or pricing? I know it will be available at PAX, but when will it be available to 'ME'?
I didnt play the first one, and probably wont play the next, but this artbook sounds like it's going to be pretty good.

I would like to see some inside scans please...

Can you order this on their site any time soon?
@Vonhert: A lot of those problems are being targeted for fixing in GW2, thankfully.

Hopefully Arenanet places the same emphasis into the game as they do into these so called "Art Books."

@TheOmnitron: Wow, which Guild Wars are you playing because whatever you're talking about sounds amazing.
Unfortunately, the Guild Wars I know of all consist of the same boring content (with no new zones added), terrible pvp with everyone playing the same generic builds over and over again, boring PvE that can easily be exploited, and to top it off with no one playing in groups anymore (only with heroes for PvE Now).
Vonhert
It kills me that I can't be there to get this for free. Instead I'll end up paying a hefty price for it....Still worth it, though.

Surprisingly, the shirts look like they show off your shape instead of making you look fat... Unless you're already sorry to say.
@Vonhert:
Same boring content...is that a joke? Everytime they added content it consisted of an entirely new continent, new campaign, and at least 1 new race. If you started AFTER everything came out I can understand, but that's quite a bit of content you blew through. Terrible pvp with generic builds? Are you new to mmo's? This is one of the only games where people can actually stand out with the skills they're using rather than just taking 1 of the other stupid fucking specialty trees. It sounds to me like you didn't even give the game a chance, but rather just wrote it off and said "I'm bored of this shit" once you got to 20.

@Phantom6612:
It's going to be a completely different animal if you read the interviews and such. It's going to be more like a traditional mmo but they want to keep the things that made the first one unique in there. No aggravating boring grind to max level, no real emphasis on gear and especially not when pvp rolls around. It's all about skill, strategy, TEAMWORK, etc. Can't freaking wait.
@tshack: There can be some counter-argument to your statements.
1. Yes, it is the same old boring content as the game was not meant for PvE. It is a glorified gamespy chatroom that puts you in scenario PvPs. The storyline and the in-betweens are just to hone your hotkey skills.
2. No, your skill and individuality is not unique although the game is twitch based. This game can't produce Fata1ity as there are too many players who scrimmages and goes. It might produce a few guilds that are known for their tournament skills but it is no different from a prevalent guilds in WoW.
3. They are generic builds. Instead of meat shields/dps/heal/buff/debuff/range, you get a Whammo, disabler, enabler, nuker, and a healer. Not to mention, there are stat/class builds that when made wrong, NO ONE WILL INVITE YOU.
4. One continent, same as all the other continents. FoW runs, trek runs, glyph runs, not to mention the nightmare mode for a gold and green does not justify it as a new/innovative content.
5. All this can be bought with extra cash. Tired of unlocking your pvp sets?, pay x amount of dollars and unlock them.
It isn't a bad game, but it definitely does not sit high on the stool that everyone makes it out to be.
@tshack:
No, I've only seen the trailer. What you say does make the game sound like it will be good. Since I've heard its keeping the no monthly fee to play I may get this.
Though, if I do intend on getting GW2, it brings back my dilemma of going back to the original. I've only played the first part of the game, and never finished that, but I've heard there may be some sort of carryover into the sequel. If there is, I'd probably want to get it. Though, I seemed to have trouble finding people to play with in the first game.
Yeah, u'll be able to buy the GW2 art book.
Tr0nc3k
I don't know if I will ever play the game but the Art Book is certainly very, very impressive. Through sheer luck I managed to snag one and get it signed by some of their artists today at the show.
