Hey, A Real Okamiden Trailer!

That last Okamiden trailer wasn’t really a trailer. It was a short clip from Capcom’s TGS website. But this, this is a proper trailer.

I was initially sceptical of the game being on DS, but you know, that looks good.

As long as it doesn't have an aneurysm-inducing Mr. Orange dance section where you're not only timed but everytime you try to circle a bud to bloom it summons THE SUN in the background. That will make no sense to anyone who hasn't played Okami, but I'm sure most everyone else is quite familiar with that frustration.

  • D-K, it's not butter? no way!

@Mister Jack can has cheezburger?: I'm good at poker too :D

  • Shinta

@D-K, it's not butter? no way!: I have a feeling this isn't your game. You realize the premise is painting with the "celestial brush?"

    Shinta

  • daknight

Looks better than I personally expected actually. Next years looks to be a damn good year for ALL systems...which is good! Kind of sucks the reason is that many of the big hits for THIS year where push back for 2010...still next year is already going to start with a bang in term of games released!

    daknight

  • Shindokie

@D-K, it's not butter? no way!: Oh it will, but I'm okay with that because CHIBI OKAMI! That's the only reason and i don't have a ds :/

  • Shinta

    Day one for me!

  • Mister Jack can has cheezburger?

@D-K, it's not butter? no way!: I can't tell if you're joking or not.

    Mister Jack can has cheezburger?

  • Alex_Mexico

    my goodness, that music!
    Who says videogames aren't art?

  • D-K, it's not butter? no way!

This game better not have those forced tacked on, stylus segments..

  • drizzt_rocks

Just got off from playing Okami on my PS2 and man does that just look ugly ... no way can I get into this without thinking spinoff ...

    D'awwwwwwwww PUPPY!

  • Atomsk88

Only the most vile creatures residing in the land of Nippon could dare harm a puppy! Chibiterasu!

  • wanion

@Shinta: If "celestial brush" is a euphemism for something, please don't tell me what it is.

  • Atheist Jew

THERE we go. That's looking much better, although you can clearly see the fps drop during combat. Either way, cool.

  • Pete359

    Okami lives on.

  • notquitedeadyet

@TetraGenesis: yes, I really hated that part

    notquitedeadyet

  • Ganji

@TetraGenesis: strange though, I played it on the wii, and never had a problem at all with it, though heard the cries of many who did.

    Ganji

  • elmorepow

Wow holy..... This looks stunning for DS release!

  • Showmeyomoves!

All that's left is hoping they get the control scheme right. I'm not a fan of games that use buttons as well as the stylus (GTA:CW, Viewtiful Joe). Too much hassle. I'd rather see an all-stylus control scheme, like Phantom Hourglass or Ninja Gaiden DS.

    Showmeyomoves!

  • surft

what no (a few on the leaves but that's nitpicking) jaggies on the DS?

  • mrdietsoda

Shhhh... Do you hear that sound? That's the sound of my reservations vanishing into thin air...

  • bluem4gic

    Day one purchase

  • Shinta

@drizzt_rocks: The PS2 game lost money, and the studio who made it was shut down after it's release. I think we can safely agree that PS3 games are a hell of a lot more expensive to make, and the userbase is smaller than PS2 was at the time.

So, they release another one on a system with a large install base, that is cheaper to make and has a better chance of not being a loss for he company, and whose gameplay is perfectly designed for the stylus like almost no other game.

I fail to see the downside really. It's this or nothing. Hell, a success here could be the only thing that leads to a sequel on a console.

    Shinta

  • Pepek

oh man, I don't want to buy a DS :\ I already have PSP and I barely play it, cause I'm only playing games at home, not outside and playing handheld at home pretty much sucks when I have PS2, PS3, X360 and PC there :\

this game is tearing me apart, dammit!

  • xyzl

looks much better, but notice that during the battle, it still lags?

    xyzl

  • Andsy

    @Shinta:

I already knew Jack was an idiot... But you as well Shinta ;/

  • SonicTheMonkey

It's amazing how much devs are getting out of the DS' hardware these days. I honestly didn't know the DS could handle 3D this well.

  • Inzoum

    @Inzoum:

    Inzoum

  • robpe36

    wow looks impressive

    robpe36

  • Inzoum

looks awesome, the DS was really made for Okami... though I think they went a little too hard on the inked outlines, they're a bit too heavy in my opinion. Only a bit though.

    Inzoum

  • MrPerson

Now THAT's how you do DS graphics.

    MrPerson

  • BlooQKazoo

Okamiden is goddam adorable. I picked up the original on the PS2 when it came out but never completed it, I'm playing it now on the wii, easily top 20 games of all time, although I'm a sucker for anything with the same structure as Zelda.

  • EmeraldDragon

    So cute! Do want!

    EmeraldDragon

  • mcderek3000

I was worried that Okami on the DS would not look on par with the PS2 version, but this is simply gorgeous! I never knew that the DS was capable of graphics of this quality!

    mcderek3000

  • AtticusSP

Cell shading is awesome. Looks great on any console since it doesn't require much hardware to run it smoothly.

    AtticusSP

  • Tanneseph

    @Pepek: zomg, then play Dissidia!

I'm in the opposite boat, I really want to play Dissidia, but I don't want to buy another handheld that I won't use.... Though to be fair, it -seems- like there are a lot more titles for DS than PSP. I could be wrong though.

    Tanneseph

  • Areinu

@Showmeyomoves!: Oh no, no, just not that. I got Phantom Hourglass and I couldn't stand it because of controls. Especially because 90% of what you did could easily be mapped to buttons. And to run you had to keep stylus at the end of the screen :/

    Areinu

  • curly haired boy

    day 1 buy. :D

    curly haired boy

  • curly haired boy

@TetraGenesis: all it took was a few tries for me. it's all in the thumb :P

    curly haired boy

  • searanox

Looks nice, but also seems that they're staying very safe with this game and even borrowing the same formula from the original. I'm interested, but I wonder if it's really going to be its own new game, or just a retread of the first, shrunk down.

    searanox

  • SuperSonik

Such EPIC music! Makes me want to play Okami right now!

EDIT: For clarification, I have beaten Okami. This music makes me want to do it again. Or I could just find the soundtrack...

    SuperSonik

  • GameBuddy - Doesn't like tomatoe

@AtticusSP: That's actually not true. If I recall correctly, the only difference between the different styles is how lighting and shading are treated. Just look at Team Fortress 2 and how much the style is affected by lighting alone.

  • Kovski

I was hoping they would atleast try to expand upon the gameplay or story or anything. but this just looks like it's a reuse of everything. That's too bad, cause it just further prove my point, Okami don't need or should have a sequel. But the game sure does look gorgeous

    Kovski

  • MonkeyMagic

@Tanneseph: Honestly. Dissidia is pretty sucky. You aren't missing much.

    MonkeyMagic

  • Xagest

@GameBuddy - Doesn't like tomatoes on his sandvich.:
Depends on the game, really. Some shading and lighting hides the sharp corners of polygons, so you can make really nice looking 3D models with very few polygons to process.

    Xagest

  • Go Go Gadget: Gizmo

    liek omgawd adorable!???

    :D

  • MaiAriSquee

Don't like the way the pup runs.

One of the things I liked about Okami was just running around, because the motion was quick, fluid, and beautiful.

Now I'm supposed to play this hopping cotton ball?!

  • shimage

@Areinu: I never used the stylus control for Animal Crosing, but I thought Phantom Hourglass was awesome. On the other hand, I thought GTA:CW controlled fine too ... I just used by fingers to do things instead of using the stylus ...

  • chickdigger802

hmmm i guess top screen is hud? Seriously why won't nintendo do a 3d zelda for ds and not just the phantom hourglass like bs?

    chickdigger802

  • shimage

@searanox: To be fair, though, a retread of the first, shrunken down, would disappoint very few fans, given how few fans there are in the first place.

  • Tanneseph

@MonkeyMagic: But you can make Sephiroth beat up Tidus all day long!!

(Or make anything beat of Kefka.)

    Tanneseph

  • chaoticumbrella

@MaiAriSquee: This is true, I'm also not appreciating the camera angle. The whole top-down thing just isn't doing it for me.

    chaoticumbrella

  • EmeraldDragon

@Kovski: You know this for sure from a trailer that is less then a minute long?

    EmeraldDragon

  • EmeraldDragon

@MaiAriSquee: A puppy does not run like an adult dog. They tend to tumble and bounce along on legs that are too long and bodies that are too fat.

    EmeraldDragon

  • EmeraldDragon

@chickdigger802: There are many people who like Phantom Hourglass.
