Insomniac: New Ratchet & Clank Future Is Single-Player
Despite what the back of the box for Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time might have said, Insomniac Games newest PlayStation 3 exclusive will not feature a multiplayer component.
As cautioned earlier, that PS3 box art for the new Ratchet & Clank was based on a standard template and “not final,” according to Insomniac. So don’t expect to see a well hidden multiplayer component in the final game, nor any of the other features listed in error.
“As we’ve said before, [Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time] is a single-player game, and has been planned as such from the very beginning,” reads a statement. “We’re totally focused on wrapping up the Ratchet & Clank Future story arc that we started in Tools of Destruction, and continued with Quest for Booty.”

@laser beams: Haha didnt say anything about the quality of the game but you know the title convention. And yes I know what tool stands for but its just not that awesome as the previous titles.
drizzt_rocks
Tools of destruction went on the quest for booty and found the crack in time.
It's a meta innuendo! Mega props Insomniac.

Because of the ridiculousness of the weapons, I think it would be very hard to balance multiplayers. Trust me, I don't want to see everyone gets turned into chicken or penguins as soon as the match begins. Though I won't mind a co-op multiplayer in this game.

@Janxer: R&C: Crack Spackle would have been even better.

@TitillatedOcelot:
OMG, Clock Blockers would've been AWESOME!

@Cloud_Hiro:
I resend my rant....I didn't think too clearly. I just saw the words 'multiplayer' and went nuts.
Multiplayer isn't bad, it's very fun for friends and stuff or if it's implemented well...But I hate multiplayer when it's sorta...tacked on y'know? Like it's the after thought and the game wasn't built around it.
If they include a multiplayer option, I want them to make sure that it's implentment properly and NOT at the sake of a decent single player campaign....that's what I SHOULD'VE said.
Rachel Fogg
@drizzt_rocks: You do know what other thing is known as a tool... right?
@Strife Fox †: It's probably due to technical limitations. Having to draw 4 different instances of the same level from different vantage points would probably use up a ton of resources. Graphics would drop out and framerate would suffer.
@Cloud_Hiro: "not everyone would use it, so we can't add it"
@MechaTama31: Deadlocked wasnt that good on the multiplayer front, but up your arsinal was awsome in my books :D
Cloud_Hiro
@natedogXVI: honestly, Up your arsinal's multiplayer is still my absolute favourite online multiplayer game. screw standard shooters like halo and such!
Cloud_Hiro
@Janxer: You realize they named it this after Ratchet and Clank Future: Clock Blockers was denied, right?
@Janxer: no, its because its too small to see what your doing when the screen is split up that much, your opponents can see what your doing and thus easily screw you up, and not as many people as you may think have friends that would come over all the time just to play multiplayer videogames, especialy post-highschool gamers, so online multiplayer is the only option.
Cloud_Hiro
Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal was my first online game, and it's where I met my friends that I still play online with today and I actually haven't made any new online gaming buddies since, it's just always been the same group of guys since UYA. What I liked about Ratchet online was it was just like a small town, everyone new everyone by name and it was a very close knit community. If they made a new one that had a online component, there could be a slim chance that I could run into some people I haven't talked to in 5 years, so I'm a little disappointed by this one not having any online multiplayer. Even so, it will be an enjoyable game I'm sure. Insomniac never seizes to impress.
@Rachel Fogg: I REALLLY enjoyed the up your arsinal multiplayer though :(
Cloud_Hiro
@Strife Fox †: The reason people don't do 4-player splitscreen in multiplayer titles is because they are retarded.
I. DON'T. WANT. MULTIPLAYER. PERIOD. :breathes fire:
Not EVERY game NEEDS multiplayer geebus, trying to tack that feature on EVERY BLOODY game is so...gah!
Look, I understand that it's SO COOL! To play with online friends but some games are just as good, if not BETTER by yourself or at least decent 2 player CO-OP. (And NOT just ONLINE Coop...geez. I have a game master for a big bro and sometimes I want to play along side him especially when the AI is made out of fail...I'm looking at you Sheva.)
Insomaniac, baby, sweetums, no....RnC is great single player, if you MUST make it multiplayer dear god make it optional at a later date which is what it sounds like.
Just, give me the game already. Please?

A Crack In Time? Boring title!
Loved the old Ratchet & Clank names.
Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando
Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters
Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty
Ratchet: Deadlocked (Gladiator in Europe), Tools of Destruction and A Crack in Time is just seriously uninspired names.
Thank god, multi does NOT need to be added to every frickin' game that comes out
@ThreeOneFive: I just played through the game in 3 days, finishing up Monday, and it looked great on my 32" 720p HDTV. The picture quality on my particular set isn't even that amazing, was a cheapo fro a few years ago when HDTVs were still rather pricey.
As you say monitor and not HDTV, I'd say there's a decent chance PS3 games aren't running at native resolution and will look like crap. Anything besides the XMB, Blu-rays and the very few 1080p games looked similar to what you described on my 1080p ASUS monitor.
@ThreeOneFive: on ur monitor? dude i played ToD on my 32 inch HDTV and it looked ace. idunno about your assessment of the game.
@ThreeOneFive: it looked awesome on my tv, same with Quest for Booty.
@ThreeOneFive: Then I would check your monitor. That game was quite beautiful. There was nothing pixelated or blurry about it.
@drizzt_rocks: says you. i had more fun with ToD than any of the previous games in the series.
bummer :(
not that i was really expecting it- but i can only imagine what kind of co-op fun you could have with this particular series... now that the idea has been planted in my mind- i REALLY wish that insomniac will consider it for future installations.
i guess this means the box art is not final.... at least thats the impression im getting.
@playstationpwns: and by confirmed for free, do you mean "with a purchase of a psn card?
It's depressing that some people refuse to buy games with no multiplayer, don't get me wrong I love a good multiplayer game, but series that never used to be multiplayer before this gen, and still aren't, get way too much shit.
One thing about multiplayer orientated games though, why the feck don't people do 4 player split-screen anymore? I've come across very few games this gen that do split-screen never mind 4 player split-screen.
Strife Fox â€
Yea I was dissapointed with Tools of Destruction. I mean no innuendo in the title or none that I can see. It was not a true Ratchet game :P
drizzt_rocks
"We're totally focused on wrapping up the Ratchet & Clank Future story arc that we started in Tools of Destruction, and continued with Quest for Booty."
Wrapping up the story arc? Does that mean this may be the last Future game? I knew it was planned as a trilogy, but I didn't think they count QfB as part of that.
natedogXVI
@Kyosuke_Nanbu: Unlike some fans, I completely agree. The multiplayer was never very good, and really didn't bring anything to the series.
natedogXVI
@jamesjohnson01: and by disk do you mean disc? remember folks, CDs, DVDs, and Blurays all come on discs. Floppies come on disks.
pandafresh
Good, Ratchet and Clank took a massive nosedive when they started tacking on a shitty multiplayer, glad they're focusing on the single player this time around.
@playstationpwns: and by free you mean paid?
-Skyline-: Voted Crecente 12'
Kind of off-topic, but did anyone else think Tools of Destruction looked like total ass? It was all pixellated and blurry on my monitor, like an fmv from a PS1 game or something. If not for that issue I'd have gladly bought it :/
I hope developers and publishers are finally wising up. Stop wasting developer and QA hours on a stupid multiplayer component that 1. You can get elsewhere 2. Only a vocal minority "demands". Not when you can dedicate all your resources towards crafting a better, more polished single-player experience. That's really what the core of R&C is about, anyway - and why my least favorite entry in the series is Deadlocked, which had a single-player game that felt like artificially truncated arena battles (read: pseudo online multiplayer) strung together by a meager plot.
Yeah, so I'd be blasting through hordes of enemies, having a grand ol' time, but then I finished some random "objective" and the screen would freeze and I'd get yanked out of the mayhem and into a menu screen.
Sorry. Still bitter about Deadlocked.
Sustenance
Man, I can't wait for this one. This series NEVER disappoints.
As for multiplayer, er, it's a platformer. I'd rather have more levels and cutscenes than a rich online component. That's where borderlands and uncharted 2 and the 15 other games focused on multiplayer get to fill the gap!
Wolfers
@bobtheduck: They confirmed it was because Marketing denied the choice of Clock Blockers.
@PissedPS3Fan: And by DLC do you mean on-the-disk?
@MechaTama31: I liked Deadlocked multiplayer. well...Deadlocked co-op. I liked that. A LOT. Multiplayer was me repeatedly getting shot by people I couldn't see. I liked it in concept.
jedbeetle
This is fine with me. Release an incredible single-player Ratchet this year, release an incredible multi-player Ratchet next year/2011, perhaps?
Boooooooooooo...
ty.
jedbeetle
@DetectiveMan: Yes, Ratchet: Deadlocked demonstrates just how fail a multiplayer R&C would probably be.
MechaTama31
@Gondito: And by denied do you mean DLC?
PissedPS3Fan
Honestly I think this is a good choice. R&C is one of those games that is so awesome it doesn't need a multiplayer component.
October can't come soon enough.
My only question is: Quest for Booty didn't have the greatest reviews -- is it still recommended before playing A Crack in Time?
@Pult|Ost - Not Backwards Compatible: Wasn't that up to a fan vote?
While it's true, Clock Blockers is more risque than crack in time, it's not really more risque than "Up your arsenal" so I don't think Sony would have a reason to clock block them...
.
FFFUUUUUUU-
dang it insomniac.
No multiplayer? In MY singleplayer platformer?
Get out of here.
That's so uncommon.
@pikemoney: and by confirmed you mean denied?
:(
Mister Jack can has cheezburger?
I like that they're focused... but I've kinda been longing for Ratchet multiplayer since the Deadlocked days... YEP. I PLAYED DEADLOCKED. I was hesitant at first, not really compelled to play... the single player portion at least. The multiplayer was the real hook for me. It turned out to be quite fun and fast paced. Of course all this is missing the platforming, and Clank of course. But for what it was, I was surprised how much I liked it. I hope one day it will come back.
multiplayer confirmed !!
@PlatformJunkie: Well I don't remember Up Your Arsenal's singleplayer being gimped... Maybe Deadlocked though.
Anyway I hope we will see online multiplayer again in R&C sometime in the future. I really loved the multiplayer in Up Your Arsenal and it added a lot of replay value for me too.
I have to admit I got really excited when I saw that placeholder...
wallpaper42
@(Zombie) Goldwings: i thought the same thing. IF there was going to be multiplayer thats what i thought it would be anyway.
Not surprised about this in the least. Insomniac likes to concentrate on delivering a spectacular single person gaming experience as of late and with the additional features they've added to this latest installment, I completely understand and support this volition.
Whew. No more worries of single player being gimped. Now let's just sit back and watch the multiplayer kiddies cry.
PlatformJunkie
@(Zombie) Goldwings: I can't blame them, they're still on the Quest for booty and something like this would have sidetrack them.
Outkastprince
Ah. I guessed incorrectly as I thought there might be a co-op element implemented in the game.
Don't care. Multiplayer in Up Your Arsenal felt like an afterthought anyway. And I despise other human beings.
Also it's called Clockblockers, not A Crack in Time. That's its slave name given to Insomniac by corporate overlords at Sony.
I remember saying earlier "McWhertor will crack the case" and you didn't let me down buddy.
I kind of enjoy the single player experience greatly when it comes to this game so it's no biggie. The cake might not be a lie but the box art is.
Outkastprince
@EmeraldStorm:
I don't get when did they say it was going to be download only. As far as I've known since it was announced I new it was going to be disk based game. Why did people think it was going to be download only?
lbmanuel1
So is this going to actually be sold as a physical disc? I hope so because I can't get my PS3 online now and seriously want this game. I was getting to a point where I was thinking about lugging my PS3 to a friend's house just to use his internet--which I *might* do anyways for other reasons.
@ergonomicuser: Co-op would be super sweet. It's why I liked Deadlocked so much more than most people did. I just like some good co-op play.
I dunno, I expected the news to just be an accidental not final cover print. I mean it said 1-3 players on the back too didn't it. the Multiplayer descript and 1-3 players bit didn't really gel.
Well it's nice that the game's coming out soon, looking forward to playing that. While MP would be nice in some games, don't really care for it in games like this.
WhatTheFrag
on my top list to play this fall, dont care bout online really.
So does that mean we could have a co-op possiblity instead!?! Prolly not...
iFOREIGNi
@Cloud_Hiro: Yes, the R&C games that were focused on single player and had the exploration and platformy goodness were quite awesome.
MechaTama31
co op would be fun. But man, not every game has to have a multiplayer component. Seriously. Especially 1st person shooters, a market that's already uber-uber-saturated. Unless you can offer something fresh and fun and unique, I wish those developers would just sink their time into the single player experience.
gloveofpower
Damn... I was really hoping they brought the multiplayer back. R&C 3 had surprisingly good multiplayer modes.
