Justify Your Game PAX Edition: Uncharted 2

It’s back! Justify your game returns with a slightly altered PAX Edition. That means we are giving our unsuspecting victims a little bit more time, fifteen seconds more to be exact.

First up is Naughty Dog’s very own Arne Meyer and Sam Thompson. Can they justify their Uncharted 2?

Comments (AU Comments | US Comments)

  • Tom Clancy's Samuraidino

    @BubbleF**kingBuddy: I love how each time thiis happens I have to point out that Uncharted is a pretty cool guy...

  • Fallible.

    @grimdeath: Yeah! I'm sick of great games, for one.

  • Pult|Ost - Not Backwards Compati

    Who IS that guy?

  • BubbleF**kingBuddy

    @jamesjohnson01: No, Nathan Drake is the guy who hid the treasure. Uncharted is the main character of this game.

    I have 3 trophies in Uncharted. I think I know what I'm talking about. :P

  • TookiGuy

    I never ANALyzed why I loved the first game... I just did. Characters and gameplay did it, I guess. It's hard for me to say exactly why I liked the game at all. It did nothing new, so it can't be anything like that. It's just... tight. Feels right. Like Monkey Island 2 - nothing very new, but it all comes together.

  • Iarwain

    Really now? Describing the game's graphics as "kick-ass"? I thought you were better than that Naughty Dog.

  • Kenny: Mmmmm, I love colons!

    @grimdeath: I totally do, because MGS was awesome.

  • jamesjohnson01

    @BubbleF**kingBuddy: ...you mean Nathan Drake.

    Uncharted is not a character.

  • jamesjohnson01

    Uncharted 2 seems to not need any justification; its fans love it so much.

    I'm more surprised you didn't choose Assassin's Creed II.

  • Dead Giveaway

    Is the Campaign Co-op enabled or just the Multiplayer?

  • VatoLoko

    @grimdeath: 90 Minutes is a drop in the bucket compared to MGS.

    VatoLoko

  • grimdeath

    90 of cinematics WTF I hope this isn't another MGS

    grimdeath

  • BubbleF**kingBuddy

    The one thing I like about Uncharted more than anything else is the wit. Uncharted is easily one of the funniest video game characters around.

  • Masonvrocks

    Haha great vid. Neat concept. The game does look pretty good, I just want it to be longer than the fisrt .<

    Masonvrocks

  • Fallible.

    @Yossarian: He's not entirely wrong though, really.

  • Eseph

    @Protector one:

    The Co-op is an Online/Multiplayer Co-op, and is not the Single player with a partner. It is it's own game mode, and runs through scenarios (levels) from the single player campaign.

    But I agree the terminology does feel a tad redundant.

  • patapon

    They already justified Uncharted 2 in the first second. Anything after that was overkill.

    patapon

  • Dead Giveaway

    @Protector one: No, not anymore. I'm talking about the Campaign.

    There is a big difference between getting a friend to join you through the Main Campaign (The Story) & getting someone to join you in a multiplayer match with a bunch of other gamers on a set map just trying to win a Match which repeats.

  • Pult|Ost - Not Backwards Compati

    @televizor: WHAT guy?

  • Eseph

    @Mike Newlad: More than anything else for me it was how well rendered and detailed those animations were. I loved the story and the characters... but i could watch Drake flailing his way through a jump all day long.

  • Yossarian

    @PegasusActual: Time for Kotaku's favorite game: Troll or Idiot!

    In this fast paced game of internet hijinks you must decide quickly whether the poster is just a fucking moron, or whether they are just saying ridiculous stuff in order to justify their existence as a human being by generating responses that confirm to themselves that they do exist.

  • spannu

    @Dead Giveaway: There is a separate campaign for coop.

    spannu

  • Mike Newlad

    @Masonvrocks: Not me, I think 10 hours is the magic number and any more than 12 is too much.

    The game looks to have a decent multiplayer which adds longevity without the need for long story.

    What would be cool though is if the first play through unlocked a second play through - an extended version like Lord of the Rings.

    That way, I get the main story from the first play through and those of you who really want a long ass game get your extra content.

    Mike Newlad

  • Protector one

    @Dead Giveaway: Ehm, isn't "co-op" "multiplayer" by definition?

  • Protector one

    @McDollar: No predicament. Simply "Kick-ass ass-kick graphics".

  • Hikiko

    @BubbleF**kingBuddy: I may be in the minority here, but I found the writing to be absolutely cringe-worthy. The snide, annoying remarks and lame quips from stock characters really got on my nerves, at times making me literally cover my face with shame. However, if their intention was to replicate a Hollywood blockbuster, they succeeded well in that regard, probably TOO well. But that's still not a compliment... I also hated how enemies took more bullets than an armored tank, as if they were trying to artificially lengthen the game by making them a nuisance. I did enjoy the platforming and puzzle elements, however. Overall, I regret not waiting for it to be a Greatest Hit title. Uncharted 2 seems like an improvement over its predecessor, but I don't expect to be awed by the dialogue at any moment.

    Hikiko

  • Mike Newlad

    @grimdeath: If it can be all watched in cinematic mode as a movie after completing it, then I am all for it. Providing the cutscenes make logical sense.

    I would love to see more games designed first as a film then split the cutscene's down to be part of the game.

    Mike Newlad

  • televizor

    @Pult|Ost - Not Backwards Compatible:

    It's THAT GUY.

    televizor

  • Protector one

    HOLY MOLY! JYG is back!! And I can also promote Pinkies again! Is it a Kotaku holiday?

  • skik08

    @grimdeath: 90 of cinematics WTF i hope this IS another MGS

  • grantanamo

    I really hope this sells well. After K2 and inFamous' dubious sales I've become very nervous for PS3 exclusives.

    grantanamo

  • liquid_kore

    @BubbleF**kingBuddy: Yea but Uncharted isn't in this game, this is all about his son Uncharted 2.

    liquid_kore

  • McDollar

    @Iarwain: one would then run into quite a predicament when the graphics are indeed kick-ass.

  • SPECIALciaNAPKIN

    @BubbleF**kingBuddy: I have 100% of the trophies and i can vouch for this man. He speaks the truth.

  • Shadowmist

    Hmm.... who IS that guy? Very good question. Heh.

    Can't wait for Uncharted 2. It's gonna be awesome.

    Shadowmist

  • Mike Newlad

    @TookiGuy: I loved how the water made my cloths noticeably wet. The pace was great too and the cover system impressed mixed with stealth kills and combo system made for some cool gameplay moments. It also nailed the interactive cut scene's and voice overs. Plus is it was light hearted and the animation rocked.

    Mike Newlad

  • PegasusActual

    Now if only someone could justify their convention.

    PAX does you no favors if you don't care for nerd bands in Rock Band, and don't read web comics.

  • CristianoJebbies

    that guy is me! twitter.com/nooflear

    CristianoJebbies

  • Pult|Ost - Not Backwards Compati

    @Antiterra: What?

  • Hikiko

    @OGHowie: Don't get me wrong, I can fully understand the appeal and charm of old Indy flicks, but Uncharted is nothing but a mesh of polygons, pixels and textures, so it's hard to convey real human emotion through that medium. We're simply not deep enough in the Uncanney Valley, or so to speak. Eventually we'll reach a point where hardware is powerful enough to display a wide range of human characteristics without seeming too awkward. Until then, however, it seems like we're looking at caricatures...

    Hikiko

  • Yossarian

    @Antiterra: That would be an epic response if one them pulled a blinged out necklace from under their shirt and just said "It prints money."

  • Yossarian

    @Fallible.: I've seen your comments around enough to know that you *are* a troll, but I'll answer anyway...

    It is a convention started by two gamers who write a webcomic. What the f else should the convention be about?

    You know damn well what is going on prior to the event, so why would you possibly throw out any criticism towards it? It's like going to Woodstock and getting pissed because some dude in the crowd with long hair is smoking pot.

  • Antiterra

    @[kotaku.com]
    (You should see him now, usedta be pink.)

    Also THIS guy, who's the SAME guy. [kotaku.com]
    (Don't make a third account, dude, that's not how it works. ;) And welcome!)

  • gerrylum

    @Hikiko: "I also hated how enemies took more bullets than an armored tank"

    To be fair, so does Drake. Not only that, but he regenerates his health. Does he have some sort of mutant healing factor??

    It's a GAME.

    To fault enemies for taking many hits to kill and then not fault the main character for not dying from one bullet also seems a bit silly to me.

    gerrylum

  • Antiterra

    Justify your Uncharted 2:
    "It's Uncharted. Two."

    Done. 3 seconds.

  • deanbmmv

    @Yossarian: Idiot, NO! Tro-auuuuuuuugh.

  • OGHowie

    @Hikiko:

    It's cheesy like the old Indy movies but I found it to be very enjoyable.

  • Dead Giveaway

    @Eseph: So they are going the way of the Call of Duty franchise.

  • Masonvrocks

    @Mike Newlad: Really? I find 20 hours to be a minimum and like my games arond 4 hours. Most games barely hit the 20 mark these days.

    Masonvrocks

  • jeffreynuffer

    That's me!!!! Holy crap.

    jeffreynuffer

  • Antiterra

    @Pult|Ost - Not Backwards Compatible: That final parenthesis was for The Guy, not for you.
    He posted a couple of times saying it was him, probably because his comment didn't show up the first time, what with being pink 'n all.
    Sorry for the messy comment. Confusing as hell, this pink thing...

    Anyway.

  • gerrylum

    @Hikiko: Well, I suppose that's where we differ then because I thought Uncharted was incredibly fun.

    gerrylum

  • Yossarian

    @Fallible.: You have a history of jumping in and dropping one liner (or otherwise short) contrarian responses that come across as being argumentative just for the sake of being argumentative.

    Are you actually a troll? No probably not, but you certainly thrive on stoking the fires.

    Unless you know Pegasus personally, then you're having to interpret his post as well as I am. I happen to see a person a bitching about the content of a gamer convention. So he's either trying to piss people off, or he's really short-sighted about the point of the whole thing.

    I dislike WoW, I don't play StarCraft, and my computer won't be able to run Diablo III. That doesn't mean that I will jump into articles about BlizzCon and start posting about how ridiculous it is to have a gathering of WoW geeks. Don't you see how pointless it is to even make a comment saying BlizzCon is worthless because they aren't premiering videos of CoD:MW2?

  • Hikiko

    @gerrylum: I'm afraid you missed the point entirely. I said they gave enemies more health than necessary, but for no good reason. Also, if Drake could die easily, it would make the game too challenging for the average player, and again it would turn into a hassle. Last time I checked, games were supposed to be "fun" -- unlike chores or part-time jobs, where you must do boring tasks over and over. Learn to read clearly next time, please -- I never faulted Drake for anything except his cheesy lines.

    Hikiko

  • Antiterra

    @Yossarian: "It prints money, beyotch."
    Don't forget the "beyotch", it's de rigueur. :)

  • GKFinns

    Ive met both Sam and Arne and it pleases me greatly to see them featured on this video. They are both great guys and I hope Uncharted 2 gets all the commercial success it deserves.

  • gerrylum

    @Hikiko: You say caricatures like that's a bad thing? So what if it's not 100% lifelike. Neither is animation, but look how much "real human emotion" that can be conveyed through that medium.

    I think I'd RATHER have the caricature than have them try to replicated something that looks totally lifelike. One might say you can get MORE emotion from caricature than you can get from live action since you can accentuate different aspects that you just can't with real people.

    gerrylum

  • Protector one

    @Protector one: It was a good one too! Much better than the previous JYG revival. Intro needs more stock photos of old people/flowers/rafting, though.

  • Fallible.

    @Yossarian:
    I'm a troll? News to me.

    I think you read far too much into things, myself. I guess that makes you of 'them 'there White Knights.

    Pegasus was clearly being rhetorical in his statement, "justify the convention." If you don't have an interested in the things PAX offers, then it does do you - as he states - no favours, in the grand scheme of things.

  • ForkInSocket

    @Yossarian: And here I thought ridicule of gaming/comic cons was basic human nature. I stand corrected.

    ForkInSocket

  • gerrylum

    @Hikiko: "It's foolish to compare lines of code to something you create with your own hands -- the latter will always be more natural."

    Pixar would like to disagree with you. :D

    gerrylum

  • Jean-François L'Her

    drake gets his ass patted and tells chloe THAT's not an ancient dagger in his pants.

    Jean-François L'Her

  • wazzzup16

    @jeffreynuffer: Are you fer shizzle?

    wazzzup16

  • Hikiko

    @gerrylum: It was indeed fun, but not for the shooting aspect. The platforming was where it truly shined.

    Hikiko

  • grantanamo

    @skik08: The funny thing is, MGS is easily my favorite series of all time and Uncharted was so great that I am considering it for the number two spot. That of course is contingent upon how amazing U2 really is. 90 minutes of cut scenes (cinematics, fuck that shit, they are cut scenes, always will be) is just another reason why this may be my new metal gear.

    grantanamo

  • Fallible.

    @Yossarian: My one liners are works of art, and they're funny to boot. Arguably, this is why it's called a comments section, and not the blog section. You could read that, though, if you want to check up on my credentials.

    His grammatical errors aside, it clearly was rhetorical. No one needed an answer to his question, and therefore it was meant to read as humorous (I thought it was, bud).

    Now, it's all fine and great that you don't feel compelled to comment on 'Cons that you don't have a vested interest in, but for the sake of a chuckle, I'm glad other people do.

    From what I can discern, in any case, Pegasus was vexed because he didn't see the point in a video-game convention that has less to do about gaming, and more to do with a certain web-comic - and I'd be hard pressed to not agree. This video was nice though, and he/she wasn't badmouthing it, so I can't really see why you're so - seemingly - upset. Seems a little pointless, actually. Stay on topic, and all that.

  • Hikiko

    @gerrylum: The problem with caricature is that it exaggerates human emotion to the extent where it cannot adequately capture the subtleties and nuances of our facial expression. It's foolish to compare lines of code to something you create with your own hands -- the latter will always be more natural.

    @Spiderbait: I'm thinking it should say "Nawty Dawgz" in platinum and ice.

  • Spiderbait

    @Yossarian: The bling would also have to say "Uncharted" or something of that nature.

    Spiderbait

  • ps360blows

    @naughtyco: Yeah... not sure about that. Either way, it doesn't mean he has to like it, either. Not everyone is going to like the same games. Sorry if that makes you sick. Maybe you should take things less seriously and up your valium dosage.

    ps360blows

  • naughtyco

    @Hikiko: Its not supposed to be like a movie, it supposed to be like the old seriel graphic novels of the 40's and 50's, with snide remarks and witty comebacks.

    Some of you people who call yourself gamers make me sick. Do you even research what you buy? If you don't like it, then wallow in your own close-mindedness.

    naughtyco

  • qxr70

    @jeffreynuffer: That is awesome

  • qxr70

    @Yossarian: i would like to buy!

  • StevenRafael

    @Hikiko: That's debatable. After three playthroughs, I'd have to say I wasn't as fond of the platforming the third time around, but the shooting only got better. Crushing, was in a sense, easier than medium for me, due to gained experience and adaptation to the controls.

    Anyway, caricature isn't without it's benefits. It can convey emotions on a whole different level than live action, film, or photo. It may not 'adequately capture subtleties and nuances of facial expression' but it can definitely convey conceptualized or stylized emotion with its own set of subtleties and nuances.

    StevenRafael

  • SideAngleSide

    I just got a ps3 slim and the only game i bought is uncharted. I love the game but it's completely unplayable with 3.0 firmware. It freezes on every chapter. Please tell me an update is coming so I can play my only ps3 game!!

  • TheFlyingGerbil

    Ooh, who does that lovely music?

  • NexusSIX: Eats punks like these

    @Antiterra: That's my justification for it.

  • rorkimaru

    @SideAngleSide: Sony know about the bug, that means that it'll be fixed soon.

    In the mean time (a lousy alternative it may seem) try the plethora of demos available on PSN. They'll keep your controler going for the next while

  • Jay Jay Deng

    Naughty Dog doesn't need to justify Uncharted 2........we all know its going to be nothing but pure awesomeness = D
