Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising’s Skira Island
Explore the history of Skira Island, the fictional setting for Codemasters upcoming Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising, coming in October for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
Skira Island has long been a place of turmoil. Luckily its real-life inspiration, Kiska Island, which was the scene of much strife during World War II. In 1942 the Japanese captured the island, one of the Rat Islands group of the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, owned by the United States. After staging several bombing runs, the Allies brought in a force of 34,426 troops in 1943, only to discover that the Japanese had evacuated the island under cover of fog without the Allies noticing. Despite encountering no human opposition, booby traps and friendly fire caused close to 200 casualties.
Now the site is a US Historic Landmark. Unfortunately, its fictional counterpart hasn’t fared nearly as well.

the AI will take over if a player is missing, but it's not 4 players + 4 AI vs 4 players + 4 AI, it's 4 "soldiers" vs. 4 soldiers. and 2 for coop (4 on PC).
also, I must correct myself, it seems the console versions will include some sort of mission editor.

@Lapoisse: its not kiska,kiska is in alaska but few days after v-j day when soviet russia entered the war they wanted to claim an island but gen. macarthur threatened to launch an amphibious operation against the soviets if they did claim the island

I know this comment will look fanboy-ish, but remember that the multiplayer is limited to 8 players in the console versions. the cap is (officially) raised to 32 in the PC version and it will also include a mission editor for all modes (single, coop and multi)

Shouldn't it be along the lines of : "Luckily, its real-inspiration, Kiska Island, which was the scene of much strife during World War II, ( insert reason why Kiska Island was lucky )." ?

@-MasterDex-: After seeing a few gameplay videos of OFP2, I'm convinced that it'll only be a CoD-like FPS, (maybe) with an open environnement. The only and true OFP successor is ArmA (1 & 2), which is made by the same developer (BIS).
OFP and ArmA were quite buggy at release, just give ArmA 2 some time, a few patches (maybe wait for Operation Arrowhead), and I bet you'll have a good "military simulator".
Back on topic : I'll buy OFP2, but not as an OFP1 successor. Only as a (good?) modern action shooter.
Yeah, I knew what I was getting into with Arma 2 but I guess I had hoped that Bohemia had learned their lesson from OFP and ArmA. I know OFP:DR won't be at the same level as OFP1 and ArmA but if it's a good game, that won't bother me.
ArmA 2 will be unretired when it's patched to a playable form.

@Devilbless: OFP was a standout title for PC because it allowed for a new level of tactical teambased play that wasn't achieved anywhere else. In the main campaign you could control up to 10 AI subordinates over an open map that allowed for a multitude of different approaches to complete an objective.
The 3rd person and 1st person views as well as the command view also added to it's depth and uniqueness and the large amount of vehicles and waepons was, as far as I recall, at the time, unprecidented.
Multiplayer meant epic battles and struggles as dogfights raged overhead and infantry and cavalry fought on land.
I can't say this new OFP will recapture the essence of what made the first so great since Bohemia are no longer in control but if it even captures a small bit of what made the first game so good then it'll be worth a buy.

@-MasterDex-: Actually I did, but the fact that it was release in 2001, when I was quite young, makes it hard to remember much of it.
It had a nice concept and all, with the bird's eye and being a commander, but still, nothing too great.
I just dont quite see it as great as some others seem to think of it.
You know what, if you can enlighten me as to what was so great about it, I might just take what I said back.

@-MasterDex-: it should run better, dunno about open world enviroments but it's the same engine they used in GRID and Dirt which runs extremely well and looks good at the same time.

Very good book, btw. Tom Clancy has really gone downhill in the past decade, but this one ranks up there with Red Storm Rising.

I'm really looking forward to this after Arma IIs disappointment. I hope the game is up to snuff and not a buggy mess. That alone will make it better than Arma II.

@-MasterDex-: I loved Operation Flashpoint and both of its expansions. I had very high hopes for ARMA and ARMA II, but was deeply disappointed by the complete lack of quality standards accepted by Bohemia Interactive once Code Masters was no longer part of the team.
Now it's Code Master's turn to advance what made Operation Flashpoint such a great game. Let's hope they don't fumble as badly as Bohemia did.
