The long, sad tale of bringing the groundbreaking shooter Goldeneye to Nintendo’s Virtual Console, or Xbox Live Arcade, appears to have ended long ago, with a whimper.
Addressing a reader question about Goldeneye ever getting an agreement between Nintendo and Microsoft, releasing it to current generation consoles, Rare said, alas, no.
That was some time ago, my friend. Fate was against us that day. Destiny conspired to raise the hurdles even as we attempted to clear them, resulting in unpleasant groinal injury. I suspect we’re long past the stage where an agreement was on the cards, but you never know. Stranger things have happened… somewhere … probably.
Dead is how we’d characterise it for now. It’s a shame. It’d be a no-brainer moneymaker, but because Nintendo and Microsoft can’t figure out who gets paid first, or the most, a re-release of Goldeneye is not meant to be. Not many things were.

Monday, September 21, 2009 at 1:58 PMRare would still own the actual stage design and stuff, right? They should reskin anything that needs to be de-Bonded and implement them into Perfect Dark XBLA or release it as a map pack for said game.

Monday, September 21, 2009 at 3:40 PMThey probably could, after all the Faculty map from Goldeneye was re-skinned and re-named “Felicity” for Perfect Dark.

Monday, September 21, 2009 at 4:22 PMMy bets are that Perfect Dark drops this Holiday. Would make sense really, it will be fairly popular i would say.
This is depressing about GoldenEye. I mean does Nintendo even OWN the rights to the game. I searched and found out they did publish it, but that doesn’t mean they own the rights like MS does to Halo.
You can tell, in a situation like this, Nintendo ONLY want it on the but MS ONLY want it on the 360 and neither will give in to the other. Rare – probably don’t give a shit as long as they can release it, but, they are owned by MS (even though half the employees from GoldenEye time aren’t there anymore) and therefore, publicly, are in support of a MS/360 port of the game.
I want 360 version personally. BUT i have it on N64 so =)
AND in the case of who gets the money, well obviously if it was on the Wii, Nintendo would get some, but MS would make some dough from it too. They own Rare and Rare would be entitled to royalties.
