Someone At Square-Enix Likes Star Trek?
Not being a font expert, but having a memory that stretches back to the 80s, I saw something on this very site today that made me think of the font you see here.
In the midst of Brian Ashcraft’s superb coverage of all things Final Fantasy XIII, I saw his post that featured this:
And it made me think of this:

And this:
Etc.
(And, yes, I see that commenters under the Elixir post spotted it to. I’m not the only one who saw those movies.)

@Boolean: Glad you posted that, or I was going to.
@Dope Boy Hero: silly comment is silly
There are similarities but they are not the same font.
@Boolean: That is what they call "setting the bar low".
d1nonlyclo
@Outkastprince: They may be similar, but it's definitely not the same font.
Typography lessons actually being used in RL?!
@TookiGuy: I agree. Watching all 6 movies in a row actually helps them too. Although they could have done much better than Hayden for Anakin, but I really don't want to start that argument again.

It may be because I'm in Chrome. It may be the new Slimline Gawker layout. But the article looks like trash, pictures n text all over the place.

Super Mario World's soundtrack = The same song, remixed several times.
In MGS3, each member of the Cobra unit represented an emotion that was cut off in Big Boss after Operation Snake Eater. After killing The Pain, Big Boss never felt pain again. After killing The Fear, he was never scared again. After kiling The Sorrow, he was never felt bad about the people he killed again, etc.
@TookiGuy: The creation of Jar Jar Binks alone is unforgivable.

@BubbleF**kingBuddy: PHH. If by inferior you mean BETTER THAN. Hohyeah!
@Luke Caplin: As long as you say old Star Wars is better, I'm relaxed.
Really, the new episodes weren't half bad. I liked them. Not as much, but they weren't as bad as so many people say...

What better time for a Picard fail pic!
Just kidding Stephen :P
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: I only realised the other day that FFXII was Star Wars. Few discrepancies, but the basics are there.
@Luke Caplin:
A correct statement.
@ThisDudeRufus: Kingdom Spider Man Star Trek Hearts?
Evdor
@Luke Caplin: Beating the new Star Wars is not exactly difficult.
Boolean
@BubbleF**kingBuddy:
And does that result in
FFXIV = Stargate?
I'd get that. no problem.
same font. judgment, plaintiff.
@awkner: Spock knows.

That E is unmistakable - identical really. You can point to the serifs on each point of the E as a key identifying mark. It's pretty apparent, really.
KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN...!
@Dope Boy Hero:
the old star wars are better than star trek but the new star trek is better than the new star wars. fact.
Luke Caplin
I suppose you'll go on to claim that there's a connection between Onett, Twoson, Threed, and Fourside.
You're just looking for patterns. God.

My god. It's... it's all there... first the spider-man font, now this...
Mrs. Penberry, get me the phone. I must speak with the president.
ThisDudeRufus
I bet the guy who did the Elixir logo found that font in an obscure place on the internet ant thought, "Heh heh heh, I bet no one will ever know where I got this font!"
Waitaminute...
If FFXII = Star Wars
And FFXIII = Star Trek
Does that mean that FFXIII will be inferior to XII?
Not the same. AT ALL. Square Enix is known for being original and by the looks of it, they've gone Where No Font Has Gone Before.
Outkastprince
There are some differences, it looks better in the FF logo. But I see what youre saying.
Star Wars is better Star Trek
*flees*
@Strife Fox †: Here here!
AOClaus
@excel_excel: Ya, definitely got those two backward didn't he?
AOClaus
Well... FFXII was one giant homage to Star Wars. Spirits within was one giant reference to Aliens... I Guess Star Trek is only natural, next...
Have they done blade runner yet? Or Dune? Or Lost in Space?
As a graphic designer I'm familiar with typography and fonts. I agree they are remarkably similar. Which brings me to my next point, anyone can probably by a license to this font and use it for whatever they see fit.
n1ner6er
The font works so much better in the original Star Trek name - the kerning is much nicer. For Final Fantasy (in the example above) it all just looks like a mess... The 'N's next to the 'A's are just ugly.
@deanbmmv: My head .... it just esploded O_O
@Dr Drew In The Hizzaaaay:
The Final Fantasy title strangely suits the use of the Star Trek font.
Also, Star Trek is better than Star Wars, that's right, I said it *quietly backs away*
DavinPolecat
@mms9304:
Omg, this is even more obvious!
Star Trek font is ITC serif Gothic.
ashjaw
Wait... so some JAPANESE people... like... WESTERN things? Damn you Internet, you gave me the impression it only went the other way!
@mms9304:
mms9304
Also, This:
mms9304
@Maverick: Even the slash between the 'A' doesnt connect. It pretty much looks like Square used an un-bold version of the star trek font.
@deanbmmv: That blew my mind.
And the whole Spanish counting birds blew those pieces into even smaller pieces.
OW-Holmes--Upset with Polling
With out StarTrek their wouldn't be StarWars. Remember Trek started in the 60's Before most of you were even were nuts in the sack!
http://home.comcast.net/~yeahyeah11/redo.jpg
It's okay, they fixed the font to something less recognizable...
DavinPolecat
@WhiteMage: It is the same font, the star trek font is just bolded. Compare the 'A'. The slash in the middle doesnt connect all the way to the left side. The 'E' is curved exactly the same. Every letter is proportional to the other.
Square stole the font, deal with it.
Why does everything have to have its own font style?
@ShaSt One: I bet you were just WAITING to post that.
mms9304
@spannu:
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: Les Enfants Terribles as well, they were him so the project meant he'd never really end.
MCX405
@Sesshu: Well shit, he must have died about 50 times in the series. Maybe his life never ends. :P
@bobtheduck: I'd love to see a FF that pays homage to Doctor Who.
As unlikely as it is!
:P
@ShaSt One: lol i had to google what a "bat' leth was interesting
@Strife Fox †: abso-LUTELY

@excel_excel: We can't forget this one either!
@TheWon: There are millions of nuts in the sack now?
amg0D
@Janxer: The DoctorAll ff main characters ever.
Um, anyone who's played a Star Ocean game would see that someone at Square Enix likes Star Trek.
@mms9304: WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN
MixMaster81
@mms9304: jesus christ.
mzo
@Bialia: Except SE has nothing to do with Star Ocean outside of publishing it.
Derangel
@Outkastprince: Roflcopter fail.
thehelixreaper
@bobtheduck: Do you a horrible trend here? They keep paying homage to Sci-fi stuff. Final Fantasy? Fantasy? I miss the old days.
Well, 12 was good. But still.
fauxbravo
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: Nope.
@TheWon: Without Star Wars there wouldn't have been a Star Trek: TNG.
@ShaSt One: He is NOT a merry man!
@bobtheduck:
Waiting to see a reference to either Battlestar Galactica series.
Bricked
@BubbleF**kingBuddy: "Super Mario World's soundtrack = The same song, remixed several times."
I... uh... what... oh god no! Mind go bye-bye now!
@Spidery_Yoda: ...I'm honestly trying to remember when that scene occurred, yet I'm not having any luck...
@NoBullet: They're not the same font. Bolding it wouldn't add serifs to it.
It's very likely, though, that the Final Fantasy font is just a heavily modified version of the Star Trek font.
There is no shortage of dummy fonts and modified fonts out there, and we don't consider their clones to be the same font. I've seen so many crappy variations on Futura alone...
@NoBullet: How can you folks discuss "serifs" and dissect particular letters and not notice the "R" is only SOMEWHAT similar.
Two fonts looking similar with nothing but 2 letters being different happens quite a bit.
They look alike by nature of what they are... if you make a font look so radically different chances are you aren't making characters anyone will recognize.
Did they borrow heavily? Yes. Are they exactly alike as so many seem to claim? No.
Sabbatai
@NoBullet: And yet there are obvious differences, like the "R" ..but we can just ignore those. Kinda like how we ignore the fact that the "Star Trek" font was actually not created for Star Trek and is probably available in your edition of M$ or Open Office.
Sabbatai
@fauxbravo: We may not be in the old days, but they're certainly still the good days as far as I'm concerned.
@7ruthslayer: Seriously, where is that scene from? What episode. Must watch.
@Paul_Is_Drunk: I hope you mean BIGGS and Wedge...I have no idea who the hell Vicks is, other than the minty chest rub stuff you use when you have a cold.
@bobtheduck: Vicks and Wedge are one giant homage to Star Wars.
So is the entire plot of Final Fantasy II & IV.
There's more, I'm sure.
Paul_Is_Drunk
Well since no one else wants to do it:
They are not the same.
The "R" character in the FF font for example is the easiest to differentiate. The middle section does not touch the inside edge like it does in the Star Trek font.
The "T" character has a top edge that is longer on the right side on the FF font where it is asymmetrical on the Star Trek font. Not to mention the serifs which are not even present in the Star Trek font.
The "E" in the FF font has serifs on each of the three horizontal lines. The Star Trek font only has a serif in the middle and only on one of the pictures featured. The middle line also does not touch the rest of the letter in the FF font but does in the Star Trek.
I could go on and on but fonts being very similar is part of the nature of being a font. When you hand write the letter "F" it may look totally different than mine but similar enough to know it is an "F".
There are whole series of fonts with the only difference being serifs on certain letters or even exactly the same save for -one- letter which is slightly different.
So, similar? Sure. A "rip off"? Possibly. An exact copy? Nope.
Sabbatai
@fauxbravo: Who says fantasy can't involve Sci-Fi? It's FANTASY, look up the definition.
-MasterDex-
@AngryGazebo: Although New Star Wars Trilogy caused Rebooted Star Trek. Ick to both.
@AngryGazebo: They begat one another!
@Spidery_Yoda: Did Janeway just have a stroke?
@Sabbatai: All you need is the 10% difference to avoid fees.
@Sabbatai: Whats the "obvious" difference with the 'R'? I see none. If youre talking about that point that touches the left line, that's because its in bold.
Its an original font. A lot of movie studios get their own original fonts made for movies.
Its funny how some FF fanboys will defend their game to the end, even to the font.
@Sabbatai: Are you joking? That's the same 'R', dude. If you took the R on the end of "ELIXIR" and gave it a stroke outline and maybe some embossing like they do in the Star Trek posters, it'd come out looking the same.
They absolutely used the Star Trek font, just like Sony used the Spiderman font. It's super obvious.
@Brisco_County_Jr: That is not SE problem, they probably just buy/license a huge pack of fonts and do what they want with it.
@Bialia: Anyone can see that Tri-Ace made Star Ocean, not Square. They only published it.
