Sonic Returns In New 2D, HD Game

1:00PM September 9, 2009 | Luke Plunkett

It appears that Sega may actually have been listening. After years and years of (mostly) awful 3D Sonic games, the company is now teasing something called “Project Needlemouse”, billed as a return to the Sonic of old.

“Old-school Sonic fans have long asked to see Sonic return to a more 2D style of gameplay” says Sega of America’s Ken Balough. “Many liked the daytime stages in Unleashed, but wanted to see a game that plays purely similar to the early games of the Genesis. Project Needlemouse is that critical first step that brings Sonic back to his 2D roots.”

The teaser clip’s tagline reads “Speed returns, in an all new 2D adventure built from the ground up”, with Balough confirming the game will, rather than be a retro-remake, be an all-new game built in HD.

It’ll be out in 2010. No word on platforms, but the “HD” bit certainly narrows it down. What do you think, Sega fans? Do you dare to hope?

About damn time they listened! As long as they focus purely on the classic awesomeness and don’t add any gimicky extras(like the werehedgehog) then this should go well for the older generations.

I don’t know, I just can’t bring myself to believe that SEGA has even the slightest clue how to make a Sonic game, which is ridiculous because of how simple Sonic is.

All you need is a Sonic, a long level, and the ability to move Sonic from one end to the other really, really quickly. I loved the ideas behind Sonic Adventure but I think (as a Sonic game) it would have been better if they had of just cut everything except for Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Robotnik and the running levels.

In the words of Eleanor Roosevelt, “Sonic is all about speed. Hot, nasty, bad-ass speed”.

Notice the optical illusion effect on the picture that makes it look like it’s coming towards you? Neat-o.

    Sega: Stop hacking my brain.

Agreed Nathan, the DS games were definitely the direction they should be heading in… Or at the very least, a Sonic Adventure game without ridiculous fishing levels and slow paced collection stages. =/

Ha, few franchises can get fans excited by saying “We’re finally going back to 2-D!”

MEGA AWESOME!!! 120% chance ill be pre-ordering this, could it by any chance be linked to the 10th anniversary of the Sega Dreamcast?

Playing on my older brothers genesis i can see why many ppl quite hate the new sonic games released nowadays.

As a man who has been a Sonic fan for most of his life and put up with the crap titles we’ve seen over the past couple of years, I really want to be pessimistic. But dammit, I got a tingle down my spine watching this clip. Sega, you better not screw me around again! (although odds are they will).
