Sony Twitters MAG Beta Codes

Zipper Interactive and Sony are so excited about tomorrow night’s first 256-player battle at the MAG-themed PAX meet-up that they’re tossing out beta codes to followers of the PlayStation Twitter.

Tomorrow night at the Penny Arcade Expo, Sony’s MAG finally achieves its full potential, showing off the massive, 256-player action gameplay that gave the game its name. In honour of the event and for the sake of the MAG fans that couldn’t make it to PAX, Sony and Zipper have come up with a little trivia contest that could score several lucky players a spot in the beta test for the game.

Sony will be posting four MAG-related questions today on the official PlayStation Twitter account. The first six people to respond with the correct answer to each question to @SonyPlayStation will score beta access. Note that this only applies to US residents, and you’ll be agreeing to an NDA in order to play.

I hope everything goes well. While I’ll be at PAX, tomorrow night is NCsoft’s Aion launch party at the Space Needle, so I will be otherwise occupied.

@Demonbird: I hate Facebook, Myspace, and you can name all of those siimilar site.

But Twitter is ok imo. It's not populated by stupid addons, people don't poke you every 5 minutes and anything else annoying Facebook has. (I don't want to join X group against Y stupid protestation, and no thanks for asking),

Twitter is a mix of RSS feeds mixed with a bit of chatting up with friends, more or less publicly.

  • Yossarian

@Koztah: So then where's the counter that explains why it *isn't* a retarded love child of Quake and Frontlines?

That at least provided a mental picture of the resultant gameplay that "worth checking out" doesn't.

And if you're talking about going to all sorts of lengths to get into a beta, discussing how the current beta can be frustrating due to limitations of date, time, and other players seems to pretty on point.

  • ToastyUterus

@Ur-Lord-Crypy: it is a beta remember.

i thought it looked alot like frontlines when i saw it too, but it looks like it can actually succeed in its mission as long as they get things done, and aim for a solid game rather than a release date

  • Koztah

@lilsamuraijoe: Perhaps the same could be said of all reli...er...internet fads.

  • Koztah

@Yossarian: Take note though, the only detailed explanation regarding his opinion is on the times the beta runs and how it's difficult to find enough people for a game - the distribution being extremely limited since it is of course a beta.

  • deanbmmv

@THEMISSING: He at least had some valid sounding explanations to his opinion.

  • Ehardergardens

@Ur-Lord-Crypy: Well I feel both those games had huge potential, and if they had met it, both would be my main MP games. if it weren't for some minor issues (frontlines mostly their messed up MP interface and lack of players), they would have been amazing.
I hope they get this polished right, because both those games had some problems, including marketing, and MAG looks to offer exactly what I want from a online combat game. That's a long way from actual delivering it though. I'm hopeful but highly skeptical this will succeed even if it's exactly what i want, as everyone seems to want 'BF lite' games now.

@THEMISSING: Games are like women. They're all worth checking out. Some are only worth a glance, some are worth a sustained glance, and some are worthy of a long sustained relationship... until it gets old and looks ugly compared to all the much younger games out there.

  • Jimmy From The Block

Still waiting for them to open up the SVER faction.

Anyone know if this game will be bundled with the sony bluetooth headset like Socom? Seems like a must have accessory if it's squad based and all.

Not sure if anyone here is in the beta. Can tell you much, but what I can say is that this game is like Frontlines fuel of war and Quake wars had a crack baby that they dropped on its head for the first few years.

Nothing to drool over. The beta is limited times in the day when most people are working And Sometimes it takes an hour+ to get enough people into a game for it to start.
So, Defanately NOT worth having to sign up to twitter for.

The real question: What isn't wrong with Twitter?

  • grantanamo

I got into the beta when the first wave of e-mails came out. To be honest, I wasn't going to buy this game but the beta has really got me considering it. The graphics are pretty decent considering the scope, but more importantly there is little to no lag. I figured based on a lot of the lag issues that other PSN games have that hosting 128+ players would be a real issue. So far (at the moment the largest games are 128) I have yet to be affected by this. The gameplay is quite intriguing and the squad based mechanics are really fun (it's great bossing people around, although par for the course not many people have mics). This game is worth considering, although I'm still not sold on purchasing it yet.

  • MCWHAMMER

@Demonbird: If I could vote your comment down, I would. Does "not associating" yourself with something popular make you cool? Are you going to paint your fingernails black now?

I don't associate myself with this thread, it's soooo long, and that's soooo not my style.

  • PalmerEldritch

I'm currently in the beta. While I can appreciate the sheer scope that they are trying to hit with larger groups of players, the actual gameplay leaves something to be desired. Comparisons to Frontlines: Fuel of War and Section 8 are apt... the controls are a bit rigid, the graphics are passable and the objectives, classes and weapons are standard fare. The only real differentiators are the number of players and the idea that the larger global battle between factions will be persistent. Alas, my opinion is that adding more people to the mix does not necessarily equate to more dramatic tension or strategic tactics -- if anything, it simply increases the standard multi-player chaos. As for the global persistence, it's not really up and running full-throttle in the beta, but it's not a feature that is going to make-up for gameplay that you'll likely get bored with after a few hours. It could just be a personal preference of play style, but I've had much more fun with Killzone 2 and Battlefield 1943. Definitely worth checking out before laying down full price.

I only want in this so I can play with some clan-mates.

  • Jimmy From The Block

@Firemane: Oh sweet I did not play last night. Looks like I will be deleting my character again.

  • kayven

    @Devilbless: It's it's, not its...you turd.

  • grantanamo

@Ur-Lord-Crypy: Yeah, I can totally see your side to this. Although, I really like the guns. They are pretty realistic if you ask me. And how high have you ranked up? The latter tier guns are pretty sweet to handle. I feel like this game is much closer to SOCOM FPS than anything. But, as I always state, I play MGO, I like overly tactical games. It's too bad that SOCOM was released as such a bloody mess. Even though I've heard that it's improved dramatically I just haven't gotten back into it. I definitely think that this game is going to fall victim to COD:MW2 though. They are just too similar, and TBH, COD will probably be much better.

  • yantelope(pirate)

@oosiegewolfoo: Yeah, what a load of crap. Class and faction are two different things. Crap on that.

  • Foxstar is in love with Kotaku's

From someone in the beta, not worth it. Clunky as heck.

  • Devilbless

@Ur-Lord-Crypy: Do you know why your comment sounds like a trollish one?
You regard anything and anyone with crappy language "you turd" "too* brain dead to understand it"
I'm sorry, but if you wish to be taken seriously, cut the craptalk, if you just wanna keep yourself unstarred, please, go on.

    *Its too, not to.

  • Ur-Lord-Crypy

    @Ur-Lord-Crypy: Oh and..
There are limited time during the day that the beta servers are up unless its a PX or convention day where they are showing off the game.

YOu know, I re-read my first comment and I thought it was straight to the point. and I think the people that I wanted to understand it did, and the ones who made snide remarks were just pissed because they are to brain dead to understand it.

    Ur-Lord-Crypy

  • Ur-Lord-Crypy

    @Yossarian: Thank you.
I keep making the mistake of forgetting that when im talking in forums I have to put everything in exact detail like im talking to my 5 year old.

    You want more detail...
Its bland, looks EXACTLY like frontlines and quake wars combined. Fog of war and smoke effects just like frontlines. Characters movments just like quake wars. Weapons are very cheap feeling and sound slightly off.
There were thousands that got beta codes but only a few hundred used them, which makes it pointless for them to have.
The lighting effects are ugly at best. There is no/little lag for the game sizes which I thought was a plus.
Lighting is dark, collision detection even for a beta is completely poo..... To much more to go through

Now granted, The game is "fun" in ways. If you dont have any other games then I can see why you would stay on it all day.

But having to wait hours for full games, having strange lag spikes in the middle of games or games starting over...

I fully understand this is a beta, I have beta tested many a game in my long boring life, So im sure the final retail version will be much much different.

But, im talking about only the beta here and it is my opinion.
Dude up there calling me some kind of troll proved himself as the troll just to reply to my comment. you turd

    Ur-Lord-Crypy

  • oosiegewolfoo

One of the ?'s was what class did the guy in a video play as and who won. Everyone Said repair class(that's what he said in the video) and Raven won. However, sony meant which faction did he play as and who won. Bullshit cuz I answered the ? right before anyone else.

  • kayven

@grantanamo: no the edit was "you turd" but nice try.

  • Dr. Evil Genius

@MCWHAMMER: Isn't painting ones nails a fad too? Not buying that analogy.

I choose to stay away from it because most people are stupid. Since it is popular with stupid people, I go in the opposite direction. It's really that simple.

A place to gather can be the most sophisticated and futuristic as it wants to be but if idiots occupy it's confines, you will never find me there.

  • roq

Judging by comments from beta testers, not worth the effort. Overall impression seems to be that this game is pretty mediocre.

  • sander_dutch

@thecrisisfromthesky: Most people will still not use the headset though. Each time I play Battlefield 1943 I start off with the headset and realize I'm the only one talking :(

  • sander_dutch

@ctorrans: They call me the Gimp

  • PoweredByHentai

@Etheris escapes via Town Portal: Yes there is. Thing is, you need to apply for that position first and then slowly make your way up the command chain's ranks.

Considering that the demo has just been released, I'd say that PalmerEldritch is being too hasty with his judgment. Zipper have already mentioned that it'll take time before people can get to commanding ranks necessary to control an all-out war.

  • Etheris escapes via Town Portal

@PalmerEldritch: Is there a CO of the whole team that can give objectives? How does the chain of command influence the game or are people not active enough in commanding to make a difference?

  • Etheris escapes via Town Portal

@Adhominem: I hope it's good, but I will definitely wait to see reviews before purchasing.
