The Big Bosses Of Dead Space: Extraction

When Dead Space hits the Wii later this month it will be a mostly on-the-rails shooter. But that doesn’t mean it won’t be scary.

In this latest developer diary for the title, we’re told all about the things the team did to ensure the original Dead Space experience wouldn’t be watered down.

    @Sloopydrew: Killer 7? Was a pretty serious on rails game in a very very strange sense.

    Not that it really made a whole lot of sense, probably.

    @Sloopydrew: same

    i am honestly considering rebuying a wii just to play this

    seeing the ishimura before isaac got there should be pretty neat

    After playing and beating the PS3 version, I just don't see the thrill in this one. Those "light ball" graphics were terrible. Oh, yah, it's a Wii.

    That "realistic camera" makes me sick to no end. Like in Legendary, when the wearwolves would hit you, and the camera gets hit and pushed away for a second, that motion kills me.

    I can play FPS games all day long without problems, but I can not handle that "realistic" camera style.

    plus... the wii sucks =P

    @Sloopydrew: It was exactly as if PC developers had decided to make Resident Evil in space, with the predictable results of a boring, stilted, unpolished game chock-full of generic art direction and terrible design. Nice concept, poor execution. (Monster closets in 2008? "Interactive" cut-scenes where you can move the camera but Isaac basically just stands around and watches? Stomping every corpse to avoid the predictable cheap thrill "gotcha" moment?)

    That might be fine for PC games, where my expectations are lower, but I hold console games to a higher standard, and I played Dead Space on the 360.

    At the very least, Extraction will have better controls (and less corpse stomping) than the previous game. Too bad it's on rails.

    @StrategyMonk: Based on the hands-on impressions from sites like IGN, the game is incredible. Don't just write it off because it's not exactly like the first game. I know I'll be first in line to pick it up when it comes out.

    i really hope that one kill wasnt a spoiler...

  • Gambit09

    @란: Fair enough.

  • sicwhite

    @CaptJapan: After seeing that Dead Space was originally set for the Xbox 1 I was praying for a RE4-esque Dead Space on Wii. Alas, we got screwed.

    Saying that, I will pick this up when it's going cheap. I loved "HOTD: Overkill" and I think this will be better.

  • Cpt. Overkill

    @StrategyMonk: Sometimes, I find a lot of things scarier if I actually have a partner. We could be fighting one thing, and then out of nowhere something could just jump up and attack on of us. It's adds to the tension, having to stop and help defend my friend, instead of just worrying about myself. Maybe I'm just weird.

  • 란

    @Gambit09: absolutely wrong, that is how it started on the wii. but starting late 2008 now, thats a totally different story, mature and hardcore games is growing way more and more. Kotaku had a thread not long ago proving it.

    this is what 3rd party developers made people like you think that these kind of games wont sell by making many crappy games since the wii launch which gave a bad image of the wii towards hardcore. if you look carefully now, there is ALOT of great games,including hardcore and of course alot of exclusives. the wiis mature/hardcore library is growing and already has many announced that are coming out soon and in 2009.

  • StrategyMonk

    @란: Like I said in my final paragraph, it still has a chance of being a good game, I'm just disappointed that the second game to enter the Dead Space franchise has to be an on-rails game when I personally think that on-rails doesn't fit the Dead Space franchise.

  • oosiegewolfoo

    @Thorax: >->...I'll have to catch that when I get to season 2(still watching season 1) Whats the episode #?

  • Kenny: Mmmmm, I love colons!

    @Outkastprince: IN SPAAAAAAAAACE?

  • 란

    @StrategyMonk: you may have a point. however, there is still one thing where you're going wrong just because its on rails(and most likely cause its on the wii that you are not happy), you shouldn't judge this game that early because you haven't played the game yet. I trust the developers,so i'm hoping that this game will "in your face" people that sees it your way.

  • Outkastprince

    @Sloopydrew: I love survival horror/action games, don't even want to mention how many times I've gone through the Resident Evil games.

    I'm almost positive I'll get the first one now, I need a new game to play and this one seems like it'll do just fine. Thanks.

    Outkastprince

  • Sloopydrew

    @Outkastprince: I recommend the first one more highly than any game that has been released since the first one, and I play lots of games. It's just an excellent experience, if you like survival horror/action. I've completed it 3 times, which I've only done with a handful of games.

  • KichiGuy

    @Outkastprince: Get the first one for sure. It was one of 08's best games.

  • StrategyMonk

    Dead Space was my favourite game of 2008, but I'm not getting this game.

    First off, the game is on-rails and for a "horror" game that takes away from the sense of fear because you know that you are being guided safely around the environments rather than progressing at your pace through the places like I did in Dead Space. For example, when I'm scared something will pop-out I take it slowly or if I think there is an area that I shouldn't be standing around because something will come out and attack me, then I can try and avoid it. It let me interact with the fear it produced and I loved that, but making it on-rails just doesn't give you that sense of control or fear. It's basically like the game is telling me, "you are fine with the direction we are making you go in because we are putting you in those areas, so you have to fend off the enemies from those areas."

    Also, they added co-op play which makes the game automatically less frightful no matter the scenario. having someone else with you just takes away tension and fear because in Dead Space a lot of the reason why it could scare me was because I was isolated from any human contact and the only human contact I had was either dead residence of the Ishimura or kendra and Zach, but they were, for the most part, nowhere near you, so you were left surviving on the ship by yourself, hence the name of the genre, survival-horror.

    Now I know that Dead Space: Extraction can still be scary, i guess, in it's own right and could still be a decent game, but it goes against most of the reasons why I found Dead Space to be such a winner.

    @Sloopydrew:
    I completely agree and would highly recommend Dead Space over res evil 5 hands down. Like you stated before, it borrows from RE but pushes the genre forward. Res 5 became a forgetful action game with little to no horror at all.

  • jesterspawn

    I'll probably end up getting this.

    Looks pretty good, although it's a little weird how the girl's face doesn't seem to be animated even though you can hear her screaming as that thing comes down from the ceiling and knocks her around.

    Aside from that minor quibble, I'm pleasantly surprised with how this game is shaping up.

  • Thorax

    Did anyone else catch the Dead Space: Extraction shout out in last Sunday's Tru Blood? It was bizarrely out of place, but still kind of neat.

  • Outkastprince

    @Sloopydrew: Sadly I didn't, hoping to get this one though but you seem to recommend the first one and it should be lowered in price by now so I might get both.

    Outkastprince

  • CaptJapan

    Would have rather had a RE4-like Dead Space on Wii. The system is getting a little over crowded with rail shooters.
    But hopefully if this sells well (which it won't) maybe they'll consider a more original outing.
    Hoping Silent Hill fills that void RE4 left.

    Huh. Wii's been getting a lot of horror games lately.

    CaptJapan

  • Sloopydrew

    @Outkastprince: Did you play the original? It was basically Resident Evil (combo. of the 1st & 4th) in space. To me it was everything RE5 should have been. Despite owing a lot to RE, it brought a lot of new things to the table and pushed the genre forward. I hope Extraction does the same thing for on-rail shooters.

  • Numanoid

    Has an Eternal Darkness vibe with the whole "what's real?" thing.
    Diggin' it.

  • unit

    @Gambit09:
    that's right! cuz every single mature game that's released on the HD systems sell really really well. it confuses me when i read about studio "x" closing up because their games have sold well....

  • Sloopydrew

    Dead Space was my game of '08. While I highly doubt Extraction will receive the same honor in '09, it does look pretty fun. I like the callback to the original with the building of the barrier. I just hope it's epic for an on-rails title. We've never had a really serious game in the genre before. Forget a 3 hours arcade experience. Give us a serious 12-15 hour game with all the story and cinematics of an off-rails game. In other words, don't make a quick cash-in, make a worthy prequel to an incredible game, that just happens to be on rails.

  • Lord Raggleus Fraggleus

    'least it doesn't look like a GunCon.

  • Michael Dukakis for Senate!

    On the rails shooters usually take alot of training.

  • Outkastprince

    @Gambit09: Yes, i feel very mature playing games on my Playstation and XBox360.

    Outkastprince

  • Diverse-Nerd

    Did y'all see the sneaky preview for this game on True Blood last week?

    Diverse-Nerd

  • Gambit09

    When will they learn mature games don't sell well on the Wii?

  • Outkastprince

    Has that Resident Evil in space feeling, I'm in.

    Outkastprince

  • David Whitney

    @Thorax: Yeah, stuck out like a sore thumb. Totally inappropriate cross promotion with Nintendo (and not for the first time, Vampires playing Tiger Woods Wii...).

    Really hate it when product placement is that blatent.

  • deathly

    I loved the first game, I'll pick this up later once it drops to $20, it might still be fun but I'm disappointed that EA, like Capcom, thinks Wii owners are too stupid to move and shoot at the same time.
