Atkinson Confirms Classification Appeal, Misrepresents Modern Warfare 2 Content

Kotaku AU

South Australian Attorney-General Michael Atkinson has today reiterated his move to appeal against the MA15+ rating granted to Modern Warfare 2. The Member for Croydon believes the game “glorifies terrorism” and will seek to have it banned by the Classification Review Board.

However, as of yesterday afternoon, the Classification Board had not received any official correspondence from Mr Atkinson regarding the proposed appeal. An Activision spokesperson confirmed to me that they “went through the proper classification process in Australia as part of a thorough review of Modern Warfare 2 and stand by the current rating for the title.”

In a statement sent to Gamespot AU, Atkinson wrote:

“I worry about any game that encourages gamers to perpetrate extreme violence and cruelty on screen, but this game [Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2]allows players to be virtual terrorists and gain points by massacring civilians. Expecting game designers to be responsible by not glorifying terrorism will always lead to disappointment.”

As mentioned by the Gamespot reporter, Modern Warfare 2 does not allow players to “gain points by massacring civilians.” The claim is presumably made in reference to the controversial No Russian mission in which the player takes on the role of an undercover agent who has infiltrated a Russian terrorist network. The mission sees the player alongside four terrorists who open fire on unarmed civilians at a Russian airport. The player is not rewarded for killing any civilian; indeed, the player does not even have to fire a weapon until the terrorists leave the civilians behind and encounter armed SWAT teams outside the airport terminal.

Critics of the No Russian mission have described it varyingly as “morally confused and dramatically lazy“, “a flawed idea, a flawed execution“, “upsetting, chilling and horrifying“, “unnecessary, cheap, and disgusting“, and “bullshit. It’s a lie. It means nothing.” But no critic has thus far described it as glorifying terrorism. I’m sure if Mr Atkinson had actually played the game he so determinedly wants to ban, he would come to the same conclusion.

my new game has you pull execution style kills on babies in the hospital ward of all colours … from putting the gun into the babies mouth to lining them up on a wall and emptying a p90 clip into a dozen at once … sure to be a hit!

I emailed him yesterday, he has request i supply my address to be checked off with the electoral roll.
“When I research and write a reply, I want to send it to a real person at a real address and not an electronic phantom or hydra.”

What gets me is the “when i research and write a reply” part. He should have the answers already, i have asked him how the sale of an R rated DVD over the counter differs to that of a game. He is so against R rates games and their sale, and convinced R rated movies can be monitored…why does he have the need to research a reply. Maybe im over reacting and read to much into it.

Either way…still no reply from the man with(out) all the answers.

I think the game maybe should be R rated. (and i suppose with the system as it stands, banned)

So far the whole MA15+ debate on this game has boiled down to the “most” controversial mission, as judged by the mainstream media, which in my opinion doesnt scrape the surface of the adult content in this game.

I’m not a classification nut, or a prude, i even went out of my way to get the unsensored version of Left for Dead 2.

Its not “glorifying terrorism” i take issue with by any means, but there are some seriously chilling, possible “adult” moments in the single player campaign that might be worth another look.

    *spolier*
As an example, Taking the first person perspective of someone being burned to death with a buddy lying beside you, in super realistic high definition clarity. It was chilling.

When it comes down to it I dont think this game should be banned for the above reason or any other.

We should freely be allowed the choice of the experiences we have in these amazing digital worlds, R18 classification is the only way forward.

Round and round we go… same comments, same points over and over day in and day out..

It’ll never change the fact that Atkinson is a moron on a personal crusade who unfortunatly has been granted the power to do so by a flaw in our government system..

It sucks but there is FA we can do about it..

Seriously though.. maybe we should raise some funds to have his teeth fixed.. Im getting sick of seeing his ugly face..

So if you have bought the game, connected it to your Steam account and then it gets banned from Australia, will Steam have to remove it from your account because they are supporting a game in Australia that is banned?

Obviously, we’re all ignoring the real issue here – that a publicly elected representative can’t afford basic dental work.

    HYPOTHETICALLY –
Say the game gets banned, we know it won’t but for argument sake let’s pretend it did.

How stupid is our country going to look when it bans the biggest selling game of the decade….

Surely that kinda shit won’t go over well, and he’ll look like a total tool for condemning us to mediocrity…more-so.

Why do so many politicians have to try and get some TV time and some attention by sledging games. Atkinson you (gingerbread – Ed.) there is an option to skip the mission and as stated in the article you do not have to kill civilians to progress in the mission(although it is fun).

I actually hope he goes ahead with this and it isn’t just a pissy idle threat. It would be even better if he somehow “succeeded.”

Given the game has already sold a squillion copies in the country I doubt anyone who wanted it would be inconvenienced, but it would move him in the eyes of retail and the gaming industry from being an annoyance to a threat. I think we’d see them investing money and time into aggravating him. It would also enrage many many fanboys who, despite having the game anyway, would descend on his office and the general SA government clamouring for their freedomz.

If it means Atkinson is seen as a nuisance by his own party as well as most of the country (not just games-site readers) it could actually lead to change. It won’t come by reasoning with the man.

If anything is making me want to commit violent acts, it’s Michael Atkinson’s ignorance, not the games I play.

Oh that is it . I Have had enough with Michael Atkinson and his stupid reasons. If he worried so much of our games why doesnt he give us the R18+ rating .

“I worry about any game that encourages gamers to perpetrate extreme violence and cruelty on screen, but this game [Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2] allows players to be virtual terrorists and gain points by massacring civilians. Expecting game designers to be responsible by not glorifying terrorism will always lead to disappointment.”

Well Mr Atkinson , for a start we are being warned and having the choice to skip the level, you can walk along not shooting anyone other than the security guys that are shooting you – a scene not unlike nearly all FPS available in Australia. It’s a moral choice and it’s up to the gamer oh and btw if you havent played any GTA Games yet , you should cause we can massacre all the civilians there is in that game.

Don’t avoid the fact of allowing us the R18+ rating . Sooner or later we will get it.

If they had a R18 rating this sort of game could be kept out of the hands of children while staying in the hands of people smart enough to understand it.

A friend of mine has made a good point. Most of the constituents of his electorate are elderly, who will eat this sort of thing up. Hence, he may not even believe his own garbage. It might just be a simple vote grab.

I suggest everyone goes to today tonight (http://au.todaytonight.yahoo.com/contactform/suggest-story) and suggests this as a story for them. If they have enough people bombard them with emails about this then surely they’ll run something, which will help to bring about awareness to all Australians about the lack of an R18+ restriction for games.

I actually improted this game and it has a 18+ sticker on it. I agree with Atkinson (slightly), this game should not be 15+ in australia. The system is screwed. It also should have a big 18+ sticker on it, (like the one i imported) and sold to adults just like every other product that is adults only.
Hell we sell adults only alcohol, knifes, smokes, spraypaint, x-rated movies/mags, gambling etc etc which I think is much worse for kiddies to get a hold of than video games. If he wants to stop being so hypocritical, push to ban all things that could be harmful to kiddies, start at the big danger first like alcohol, cigarettes, priests, football, bikes, pools. When he gets down that very long list to gaming then I might have a little bit of respect for him.

    Think of the Children.

Unless he keeps having control over what is right and what is wrong – children might grow up to be free thinking radicals who don’t believe everything that is spoon fed them by Uncle Conjob and Aunty Atkinson!

And that is ultimately what is at stake here.. Freedom of speech Vs Aktinson and Conroy telling us what we can see/do/feel/believe in.

Sorry – couldn’t resist adding Conroy in there as both are prime examples of whats wrong with Democracy and the use of Technology in Australian at present.

Can the publishers sue Mr Atkinson for defamation? He is blatantly misrepresenting the facts to promote his own view and personal agenda. The industry needs to hit back at Mr Atkinson and exposing his lies publicly through a legal medium would be a great way to make him accountable for his misleading statements. Our contributions to these types of forums goes largely unheard by the majority of the populace but surely if a corporation such as Activision could go after him then at least both sides of the argument could come into the public arena of debate.

He won’t ever accept violence in Video Games, it’s part of his values. The sad thing is that his personal views can have so much impact.

It’s the damn cockblockage of our basic rights that turn things violent most of the time.

And David, please stop posting that picture of him. That stupid smile just makes me want to laugh for hours.
