Modern Warfare 2 was the biggest entertainment launch of all time. So you’d expect it to stay at the top of the charts for more than one week. Did it?
Nope.
New Super Mario Bros. leaps from #3 to #1, benefitting from being bundled with the Wii console at almost every retailer. Expect it to stay there until well into the new year. And, evne though he wasn’t talking about Australian sales, expect Reggie to be proven correct in his prediction that NSMB would outsell MW2.
Assassin’s Creed II does well to beat Modern Warfare 2 across both formats. I’m a little surprised to see the PS3 version of Infinity Ward’s shooter seemingly showing longer legs than the 360.
Next week: will Left 4 Dead 2 crack the top ten? Or have you all imported it instead?

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 9:21 AMI think you will be hard pressed to find a single person here that hasn’t imported L4D2 :P
WiseHacker
Friday, November 27, 2009 at 9:30 AMToo true that. Where L4D2 is concerned, why would anyone pay more for less?

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 9:31 AMor haven’t bought it yet…
Simeon
Friday, November 27, 2009 at 10:47 AMDidn’t buy it either. Even at $50 Valve got too much of my money for what L4D1 was worth.

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 11:26 AMyea i got l4d 1 for that because i was under the distinct impression that i was buying an incomplete game that valve would finish TF2 style buuuut no i and every one else who paid full retail got screwed.

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 12:07 PMI bought it, the way I saw it was that I got easy 100+ hours in of Left 4 Dead 1, that’s value.
Left 4 dead 2 is it’s sequel, it adds more, enemies, weapons, items maps and has a bit more story. What other sequel isn’t pretty much the same.
I never boycotted it or planned to, at $38.60AUD with the preorder 4 pack special, there is no better value gaming out there. I’m very happy I bought it.
I’ve racked up 15+ hours of game play easy already. With no slow down in sight. TF2 is a different product with a different style don’t hate on L4D2, be happy TF2 updates are free.

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 12:53 PMyou seem to miss the point of my arguement TF2 and l4d are different products make no doubt however i followed the game pre release and all the press footage and interviews claimed that that would be the case and i bought a game i never would have otherwise because of that and well L4D 2 is just a big slap in the face to people in my situation

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 1:47 PMI don’t like this mess of the L4D 2 business, and now Atkinson is gonna f it all up by trying to ban Modern Warfare 2. He is like the final boss in the Australian Video Game Industry.

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 1:59 PMSweet! So we just have to jump on him three times?

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 1:26 PMI’m sitting on not buying the game in the hope that for some reason Valve decides to chuck a CD Projekt and patch the game. Being unlikely though, chances are I’ll import it like everyone else is.
Dave
Friday, November 27, 2009 at 11:02 AMIsn’t it illegal to import L4D2 cause that version was banned in Australia?
greg
Friday, November 27, 2009 at 11:26 AMit is illegal but atkinson can suck a fat one

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 9:30 AMif i were to buy l4d2 i would be importing it just like i did with gta4. the game doesnt appeal to me though. i am waiting for MAG. the beta was pretty awesome. i bought mw2 to keep me occupied till then but what a let down. might have to go back and try uncharted 2 online again ;)

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 5:51 PMThere is a beta for MAG? How did I miss that?

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 9:48 AMThe new Mario is pretty good though, if you have a Wii and a wife. You get to play games AND argue that you spend time with the Mrs. Just watch out, if they are anything like my wife she will take all the power ups and push you off alot of cliffs.

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 1:18 PMI do wish my wife played games with me.
The last one she did properly was Katamari 2.
Maybe I should see if I can nudge her in direction of NSMB.

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 10:43 AMI don’t know if this is true, but to me, this is how it happened. With MW, I just kept hearing stuff about how good it was, via word of mouth, forum post etc. It seemed to be its sucess was from ppl who bought it, then told others to join in the fun. So, I picked it up (pc of course) and to be honest, it was the first online game I’d ever had fun with. I plowed hours, then months and months into it. I’ve recently reinstalled it, and having fun again.
But, with MW2, all I hear from ppl is how much of a let down it is. Purchasers seem to be saying its fun for a bit, but an overall let down. Sure, they may have made a lot of sales, but I don’t think it will enjoy a long running word of mouth sales trend as what (in my eyes) appeared to happen with MW.
This trend of PS3 sales over Xbox I find interesting. Its not happening all the time, but I think the ps3 is enjoying a rush of new sales from the price drop and therefore new owners are wanting games. Xbox’s owners perhaps have had it sitting about for ages now and have plenty of games to keep them going. I hope to see the PS3 continue to grow, but this word I’ve heard about a PAID upper level of service for the PS3 is kinda pissing me off.

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 10:48 AMLeft 4 Dead 2 came out this week for inclusion on THIS chart… needless to say it didn’t make it.
It’s number 5 on the Xbox 360 chart…

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 10:48 AMNSMB is full of epic win and the review haven’t really done it justice, compared to the overhyped MW2 which seems to have Halo 3 syndrome, people originally praised it then decide it is a bit meh and not as good as it could have been. Nintendo still top of the game for fun I reckon.

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 10:50 AMGood to see the general populous still care about decent Mario games. Rather than that Mario/Sonic at the Olympic Games rubbish.
Wii Cricket still in there? Huh? HOW? This game has had zero marketing. Is it just people wandering into shops thinking “I like the Wii. I like cricket. This game will be great!”?

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 1:02 PMi see the wii cricket ads all the time with mcgrath on them

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 11:04 AMDammit people, stop buying MW2 and buy Brütal Legend! (and if you already have, pick it up as Xmas presents) :P

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 12:22 PMWooo go AC2 beating MW2!
My boycott of MW2 OBVIOUSLY worked.
Dousatsu
Friday, November 27, 2009 at 12:28 PMOf course MW2 sales are down…everyone bought it on release day.
And yes, it’s overhyped, but a letdown? Please. It did the same thing every sequel does…throw in more modes, weapons, equipment, maps and a new campaign to make a more versatile and better experience (minus pc online of course). If you expected anything more than that it’s your own fault.
glennc
Friday, November 27, 2009 at 1:12 PMif a game is as successful as the first one was i expect that money to go to making the sequel better.
COD is a different beast though, switching to modern warfare helped IW hide the fact that the game hasn’t really changed since the first COD aside from graphics of course. it is basically like a new car with an old engine. same linear hand-holding, rubbish vehicle implementation, no destruction… it might as well be a light gun game.
MW3 will have to change a lot if they want to keep up with DICE. come march the game will have changed and a lot of people will switch over, so IW will need to match that game with vehicles and destruction and just get rid of the linear cr@p.

Saturday, November 28, 2009 at 2:43 PMI’m sorry but on what level are you basing all this crap on? Clearly you are one in something like 13 million.
Lets compare: same age, same income… i mean…
DICE’s last shooter probably sold less than 5 million copies and had no where near the critical acclaim that either MW2 or COD4 received (World at War probably too).
Judging by the SALES, people want what IW and Treyarch are delivering. It works so stick with it. If people wanted change, they wouldn’t keep buying or playing the games. It’s simple and easy to understand.
One may question the quality of the game themselves as that comes down to personal opinion. But don’t go naming all these features that COD lacks (and many and PLENTY of other games too) just because one game that didn’t even change the way we view FPS had those very features.
I will just gather you are an angry PC player who is attempting to stick with his boycott.
Bottom line is: MW2 is very successful and just because it had dropped in the list (even though the sales aren’t shown and not all retailers contribute to this list) does not mean MW2 is becoming an over-hyped game thats already losing interest.
Dunnowhathuh
Friday, November 27, 2009 at 1:33 PMThat’s the thing with overly hyped games, most sales tend to happen very early. I might get the game when it hits the bargain bin but at the current moment in time, I’ve lost all respect for iw and activision and don’t plan to give them any of my money (unless they stop being pricks).
Whether or not they get any of my money ever again depends on what Treyarch does with the next PC version of CoD.
Jay
Friday, November 27, 2009 at 12:38 PMAssassin’s would be #1 if other retailers decided to offer their numbers towards the chart.
Why is it that some retailers don’t? How does it affect them??

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 1:17 PM“surprised to see the PS3 version of Infinity Ward’s shooter seemingly showing longer legs than the 360.”
Judging from my friends list and their lists, everyone’s already bought it on 360.

Friday, November 27, 2009 at 8:46 PMNo way should anyone dare buy the mutilated Australian version, it is simply disgusting the dictatorship in Australia.
Whats more people are not outraged to demand a R18 rating and the removal of Michael Atkinson.

Saturday, November 28, 2009 at 7:55 PMI’m not suprised MW2 is selling more on the PS3, a truckload of 360s just got banned, and the PS3 bundles are pretty sweet right now and you get to play online for free. If you were going to have to buy a replacement console to play MW2 anyway, the online play being free is a big attraction.

Sunday, November 29, 2009 at 7:44 PMThat’s why I bought it on my PS3 and not for my 360, seems pretty straight-forward i’d you ask me.
