This year, Japanese magazine Famitsu has awarded perfect 40/40 to three games: Dragon Quest IX, Bayonetta and New Super Mario Bros got perfect scores. Years-in-the-making and eagerly-anticipated Final Fantasy XIII did not.
Famitsu has four reviewers rate games on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best for a cumulative 40/40 score. Famitsu praised the game’s cut scenes as well as the battle system and the high level of strategy it offers. Interestingly, one Famitsu reviewer noted how up until the mid-way point of the game, the story seemed be linear and that it didn’t offer any new “gimmicks” in its story telling.

Here is how the other FF title stack up in the eyes of Famitsu:
Final Fantasy I – 35
Final Fantasy II – 35
Final Fantasy III – 36
Final Fantasy Ⅳ – 36
Final Fantasy V – 34
Final Fantasy VI – 37
Final Fantasy VII – 38
Final Fantasy VIII – 37
Final Fantasy IX – 38
Final Fantasy X – 39
Final Fantasy XI – 38
Final Fantasy XII- 40
Final Fantasy XIII – 39

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 4:44 PMYou seriously don’t think that a hardcore FF fanboy wouldn’t look at: “the story seemed be linear and that it didn’t offer any new “gimmicks” in its story telling.”
wouldn’t be like “OMGZZZ NOW I NOEZ THERE IZ NO SUPRISEZ HOW DARE YOU KOTAKUUUUUUU”.
Even if they’re wrong, it’s always to be overly careful when it comes to things like this, you never know what people can find to be a spoiler.

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 1:06 PMHmmm. I personally prefered X to XII. XII was a bit of a letdown, I felt.

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 4:56 PM.. I really don’t get why people seem to hate IX so much. Personally, I thought it went past both VII and VIII in terms of story (depth of characters, etc.)
But then that’s just me.

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 6:20 PMI think IV is the best, personally.
Wow. Not a 40/40? I just lost a bet! Damn!
Seriously, did Famitsu’s deal with Square Enix to give every numbered game in their franchises a 40/40 expire?

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 6:26 PMWait, XII got a 40? Uhh, if it got a 40 and X got a 39 then I’m actually happy that XIII got a 39. In my dodgey logic, that means XIII is as good as X which is a good thing cuz if XIII got a 40 that means it’d be as good as XII and I hated XII and that would be a bad thing….yes, that probably didn’t make sense

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 6:47 PMOMG OH NO! END OF THE WORLD.
A FINAL FANTASY GAME DIDN’T GET A PERFECT SCORE AND IT HAS BEEN YEARS IN THE MAKING!
…
Your point?

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 7:32 PMFFVII > FFVIII > FFIX were the best in my opinion. Final Fantasy X and XII were awful in comparison to the rest so it goes to show how bad a rating this Famitsu gives for it’s games as they both got 39 and 40..

Wednesday, December 9, 2009 at 7:37 PM39 is still pretty good… it just shows that maybe, just maybe Famitsu rates their games on how good the game actually is rather than how big the hype behind it is ;D
