Adult games and games for adults are different. European developer Quantic Dream doesn’t just dream of making games for adults, it is.
With upcoming PS3 title Heavy Rain, the developer aims to make the video game equivalent of something like an R rated film — adult characters, adult content. As mentioned previously, some of that content is nudity. The preview build of the game played by Kotaku included a little bit of nudity – a bare male posterior, a topless woman, and cheekily blocked genitalia during some scenes of dressing and undressing — but no sex.
Footage from Polish site tvgry.pl offers a look at how the adult content in the game is being handled — looks somewhat sterile, which is refreshing for a video game.

Friday, December 25, 2009 at 9:56 PMHaha. Almost makes we wonder how much you would consider is a fair price for the console that only does everything. Maybe Playstation should take out the HDD, wi-fi and BD for you? Ps3 Lite anyone? Wait a minute, I think I just threw up in my mouth a little bit…

Friday, December 25, 2009 at 5:35 PMOh, bugger. It hasn’t been rated by the OFLC as MA15+ yet, has it? I’m not sure it will…
I just hope the fact that it takes the subject very maturely that it will get through; besides, the kind of kids who buy a game for sex aren’t the kind of kids who buy Quantic Dream games.

You can relax now. =]
MA15+ classification for Heavy Rain.

Friday, December 25, 2009 at 7:31 PMVery much looking forward to this game.
I love how it plays out like a movie, and rewards you from becoming invested in the characters.
A refreshing change from the norm.
Day 1 purchase for me.

Friday, December 25, 2009 at 7:40 PMMr Spoon has high hopes for Heavy Rain. Mr Spoon also hopes that this will be a game he can actually play with his wife in attendance. Mr Spoon’s wife is NOT a gaming fan.

Friday, December 25, 2009 at 9:20 PMSTELLAAA– sorry, I mean “Padme… NOOOOOOO–” no wait, I mean “SHAAUUUUUUUUUN!”
This is the first time I’ve seen anything that hints at the game’s control scheme/gameplay and it looks a bit waggly. Still, I’m curious, and this may be one of the (very) few games that could make me consider buying a PS3.

Friday, December 25, 2009 at 10:13 PMAgreed, I’m definitely looking forward to this. One of the games I decided to get a PS3 for. I reckon the Classification Board SHOULD let this through, but you can’t be sure at this point with how things have gone lately.
It’s giving off a Shenmue-ish vibe for me. If it’s anything like it, I’ll be very very happy.

Friday, December 25, 2009 at 10:16 PMPssht, I’ve already seen the uncensored nudity somewhere on the net… don’t remember where (gametrailers?) but it’s pretty tame :/
You have a looooot of time and money on your hands if you’re playing this game just for the nudity… I might get it when it’s really cheap, because it does look “okay” for what it’s trying to achieve I guess, but I prefer games with more… um, game?

Friday, December 25, 2009 at 10:22 PMPS: here it is – http://www.gametrailers.com/user-movie/heavy-rain-topless-scene/330993
It’s blurry and recorded off a monitor, but it’s still NSFW polygonal nipples, so beware!

Saturday, December 26, 2009 at 12:19 AMTwo things happen the more footage I see of this game
1. This game looks more and more awesome the more I see it. I got Fahrenheit a few years back as an ex-rental and that game was great, this one looks to one up that game in almost every way. Normally I’m a huge fan of any sci-fi in games, but that game went a little overboard, do people remember that crouching tiger hidden dragon style fight?. I remember that sex scenes in Fahrenheit as well and these look a little more tasteful (not that those were dirty in anyway really) but I’m getting the feeling we will have to wait and see for the real mature content.
2. The more I watch the more convinced I am that this is going to be a tiny niche market. As David said its definitely not for everyone. I do think this game will be a total success (both critical and commercial) but I can’t say the same for this genre, the developers hope this could be somewhere between a game and a movie and even open up a whole new market for this type of thing, but I just don’t think it will get that far. I really hope I’m wrong and this becomes a much bigger thing, because the possibilities are literally endless. I’ll definitely be picking this up

Saturday, December 26, 2009 at 8:24 PMPretty much my feelings exactly. Fahrenheit was a very worthwhile sort of an experiment – you wouldn’t want every game to be like that, but when it’s handled that well you have to give credit where it’s due. But that sci-fi angle at the end was just sh*t.
My biggest worry early on with Heavy Rain was that it’d just be retreading Fahrenheit’s path with nicer graphics, but the closer it gets to release and the more I read about it, the more interesting it gets.
You’re right, though, it’ll be a niche game that will be lucky to make back its development budget. But ultimately I’m not a shareholder, so I only have to care if the game is great, not if it makes any money :)

Monday, December 28, 2009 at 8:51 PMI think this looks like a pretty cool and very pretty interactive movie. Sure its something new and interesting, and who wouldn’t want to see an interactive movie, but think about this.
I hate that I have to pay $18 to see a movie, I could go eat a meal at a cheap restaurant, or even 2 meals if I felt like take away. I’m not about to spend $100 on something that is just a movie, even if it is as long as an average 8 hour game. I hate games that are 8 hours long and a $100, I buy things with replayability, which I really can’t see this having.
